Ubuntu :: How To Lock Or Hide Files
Apr 2, 2010
I've been facing this problem of locking up files, I've three users in my system, I can't lock a folder but just can hide it by appending . in front of file. Is there any tool/software in linux to lock a file, so other users cannot even open/see. I tried with chmod options but didn't work?

I use a Mac at work. Attached to it is an external hard drive (personal) that I would like to either encrypt or either make invisible tave ubuntu on my personal laptop.Could I make it ext4 and unviewable by Mac or PC or something along those lines so that nobody just goes through my (personal) stuff by just logging in and going on the desktop? I'm looking for something that will still allow me to access them fairly easily such as file permissions or something. I don't wanna put it into a zip file or a password protected rar file. I know nothing is 100% but I at least want a layer of security.

I have just set up my web server for the first time in Linux (used to be Windows 2003). I have a web site [URL], could someone with experience please check this web site to see if the PHP files are hidden (and therefor my PHP code can't be seen). If they can be seen then how do I hide the PHP files?

I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

There is a very strange problem I've been having. When I enable either Caps Lock or Num Lock the media controls on my keyboard cease to work. I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls

I have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.

I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

I am having a very annoying problem with my laptop.I am experiencing many freezes. When my laptop freezes, it shows the caps lock and scroll lock lights blinking. At first I thought it was a problem with flash (here is original thread: URL... )In the original thread, I thought the freeze's were being caused by the flashplayer, but it apparently isn't the case. The last time I experienced the freeze, I was playing around with the compiz desktop effects.

Today I got a call from our chairman saying that he gets duplicate mails. When I checked the postfix logs, I found that it is the locks that are creating problems. The mail which duplicated was to an alias which included our chairman. In that alias, the mailbox of a user was locked since he was receiving his mails (I use dovecot for mail distribution), and hence the lock was on for that mailbox. When postfix tried to deliver the mails, it encountered the lock and the mail delivery was stopped, thus by requeuing the specific mail. While postfix retried the delivery, it found another lock with another mailbox and again the delivery was stopped, thus sending the mail back to queue

I am trying to hide some folders in Ubuntu Linux which are always hidden in Windows through File/Folder Attributes (attrib -h)
It is not an option for me to rename the folder from let's say "Ancient texts directory" to ".Ancient Texts Directory" because the programs associated with these files and shortcuts will not work in Windows. I would like to make the folder hidden by not renaming the folder. Is that so hard to ask?
Is there really no other way of making a folder or a file hidden in Linux just like in Windows by Applying Attributes? I Don't want to rename it by putting a dot in front of it. Moreover renaming a file by putting a dot in front of the name changes the position the folder appears in the list view. For some people this may be ridiculous, but for me with a few hundred files and folders and subfolders, this organisation is important, aside from the aforementioned reasons.
I need to maintain compatibility between the two operating systems' basic folder structure as i must use both Operating systems.

I have a desktop computer running Debian Lenny, a 56 K modem, and a dial-up account, currently configured like this: computer -> modem -> UPS -> phone jack
When I run off a Knoppix live CD, I can use kppp to configure pppd (using PAP/CHAP authentication and hardware control flow) to dialup and surf. When I try to user kppp to configure pppd exactly the same way on my hard drive installation, I get nothing. Both my Knoppix live CD and Debian Lenny use exactly the same version of kppp, but the pppd related files in /etc/ppp look a bit different.
Under both Knoppix and Debian Lenny hard drive installation, when I try to connect, the login debug window of kppp shows:
Code:
ATZ
OK
ATM1L1
OK
ATDT [phone number]
At this point I hear the modem dialing out, and when using Knoppix, after a few seconds I see
Code:
Which I think corresponds to my route to the InterNet being established through my ISP. When using the hard drive install, I never see the CONNECT, and all indications are that my modem is not sending authentication information at all, but getting stuck right after dialing out, so that my ISP gets a phone call from a modem which... refuses to speak. I never had any problems before, so I am baffled.
So apparently my system is currently misconfigured in some way which prevents point to point protocol from getting out.
Questions:
I have a firewall on my computer which I set up using guarddog. I have enabled point to point protocol from internet zone to local zone. I know that ppp is a symmetrical protocol, but my understanding is that I do not need to enable point to point from local to internet zone. I have not enabled irc protocol because my understanding is that this is only relevant to software flow control using chat scripts. Does this sound correct? Is there some additional protocol I need to allow in order to use pppd to dial out?
When I reboot my computer (off the hard drive) I sometimes see that the system complaining about a failure to stop every process, and sometimes I see mention of an eth0.pid. I have been looking for lock files; would they all be in /var/run?
When I use kppp to configure pppd, I want to do that as my ordinary user for at least two reasons, correct? don't want to run pppd as root user for security reasons kppp is a GUI and root user can't use X (on Debian)
So I should see in home directory of my ordinary user
.kde/share/config/kppprc
.kde/share/apps/kppp
But not in /root directory, correct? What pppd related processes should I see with ps -ef if everything is working?

What is the easiest way to make it so that these transferred files will not be completely locked out and require me to go and change them one by one sohat i can access them without having to go root. Also the "apply to all subfolders and files" doesn't work. Also trying to set the SELinux rule to "userspace" doesn't do anything else. Basically i was trying to do just that transfer my $home folder over to fedora but now it's being a bit odd towards me with making everything require root access and not letting me read/write all files and folders within them.

every time I save some files in my desktop a sign of "lock"

Then by using this command I can remove it:

I just noticed that I find lots of hidden files named ".directory.lock.??????.test" across my samba-shared file system. The questionmarks stand here for some random alpha-numeric patterm.
- Which application might have created them?
- Is it save to delete those ?
With e.g. "find . -type f -name ".directory.lock.??????.test" -exec rm -f {} ;"
