I've got a problem with hibernating my laptop. It manages to copy everything to swap memory, but when it finishes, it won't power off my laptop. I have to manually turn it off (by pressing the power button for a few seconds). If I restart, everything is still there, so the hibernating itself works, but not the powering off part. My laptop is an Asus notebook K52F with Ubuntu 11.04 and Gnome 3.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI increasingly use Ubuntu so swapped SATA ports 1&2 around so now 7 boots from BIOS F11 pop out menu. Windows did not complain so far but hibernate is missing from Ubuntu's power down options. I installed Ubuntu Tweak, but cannot see an option to re-enable. Is this something to do with the swapped HDDs &/or the swap partition? Or more likely a recent update?

View 3 Replies View RelatedMachine is a Dell Optiplex GX260, Pentium 4 with ATI Radeon RV200 QW [Radeon 7500]. I believe this is an AGP graphics card. I also believe that the graphics card is the root of my problem. In Karmic, I could get the computer to suspend. but it would not resume. The monitor would not initiate and it seemed as though the system froze. Only way out was a hard reboot. Hibernate worked for me without any problems, so it was no deal breaker. Now in Meerkat, Suspend behaves exactly as before. However, I can not get the system to go into hibernation.
The monitor goes down, but the system seems to freeze and never go down. I have tried editing the options in the acpi-support file to no avail. I have tried disabling compiz (which works amazingly well with this card), to no avail. I am using the open-source drivers and I have not tried the closed-source drivers in this system. I tried the closed-source drivers in Karmic and they made no difference. I may try un-installing the ATI card and fall back on the on-board Intel chipset to see if that solves the problem. Only then, I will loose 3d effects, etc.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using CentOS 5.6, kernel version 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5xen, and the Hibernate and Standby options don't even appear in the System menu. How can I get them to appear?
The funny thing is that before I reset my system to a clean install of CentOS 5.6, I was able to see those entries and execute them just fine. (I think that in that previous installation, by doing some updating of packages I got another kernel version and booting into that one showed the menu items.)
Could it have something to do with the fact that it's a xen kernel? Even though I've disabled xend, it doesn't appear.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of installing Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a Compaq Presario 5900Z desktop, circa 1999.
Because of a change to some IDE/SCSI drivers during 2008, no Linux distribution from the fall/autumn of 2008 onward will install on this system using their standard images, every distro I've tried to install this way would report I/O errors. There was a bug report filed on this at Launchpad some time ago. Running the images as Live CD's would work, but the actual install would always fail.
I began this by installing Ubuntu 7.10, then upgrading it to 8.04 LTS. The next step is to upgrade to 10.04 LTS.
When booting up, there is a console message that briefly appears that the BIOS (being from 1999) fails the cutoff (2000) and to enable ACPI, acpi=force must be added to the boot parameters.
The issue is when powering the system off, it will not power off by itself. At one time, there had been a different distro installed on this same system alongside Windows XP and both systems correctly powered the system off when shutting down. Ubuntu keeps the system powered on and I would have to hold in the power button for up to 10 seconds, until it powers off.
I do not know if simply adding acpi=force to the boot parameters will fix this, but I also do not know where to place this. The other distro used on this system actually came with a GUI interface that would allow for something to be added to the parameters. I cannot find anything similar in Ubuntu.
So, my questions are:
1. Will adding acpi=force properly turn the PC off at shutdown?
2. If so, where can this be permanently added to the boot parameters?
I've done a lot of search and already kind of fixed part of the problem, so this is where the fun comes in. I went away for the week, and not until the day I got back I lost power while out, and my computer rebooted after the power outage to Mac osx, which it's supposed to do as I'm using a Mac Pro and have a regular version of OSX 10.5 on there and my ubuntu server. I restart my computer and I get a few errors and my raid5(3 1tb drives) doesn't mount and says read only for everything else. I finally found a way to remount that raid which while in root I could create new folders and move folders, but only on that raid. I wasn't able to do anything with my boot drive. The weird part is, that now I can't ssh into the server and webmin won't even load. I'm still relatively new(little over a year, but honestly, not much has gone wrong to need to troubleshoot) to ubuntu server, so I'm not that best at troubleshooting it. I won't be home till later tonight, but any tips/tricks/ideas I can try when I get home would be great, or if you need any info, I can get it to you.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Lynx 10.04 amd64. Twice now, my entire file system has become unusable -- each time after a short power outage (2 seconds).
In the first setup, I had two primary partitions: 1) / that was ext4; 2) /home that was ext4.
In the second setup, I changed the /home to ext3.
Both times, after booting up following the power outage, I received a message saying that "serious errors" were found in /home. But, after several reboots, I was able to login and use the system. Then, some time later, I would started getting "Read Only" messages when trying to write to the file system.
fsck gave the following message: "/home terminated with status 4". I received numerous "I/O error" on sda messages.
My question: Is this vulnerability due to using ext4 or is it related more to something else in Lynx 10.04? Further, what can I do (other than buying a power backup device) to avoid my file system becoming unusable after a power outage?

I'm going to reformat my external drives to get rid of the crud that I've built up. (Crud being incremental backups, windows software, and similar things.)(I also want to get rid of the FAT32 file system that they use.) These are USB 1TB drives. The theory is that data is written to it once, but read back a number of times. (I also burn that data to DVD. If there was software that could organize 5TB of data on DVDs, I'd be using them.)
I"m trying to decide whether to use ReiserFS, Ext4, or another file system. Basically, I want something that:
* Won't get corrupted when the power fails;
* Can handle files that are 4+GB in size;
* Uses extends --- preferably without user intervention;
when my monitor turns off after 30 minutes, I cannot do anything after. We're talking complete lock down of Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Not even alt+printscreen+REISUB reboots the machine; I have to do a hard reboot (which sucks and is hard on hardware).
