I am currently using a Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04
When I press the power button, I see a dialogue box which asks for confirmation and if nothing is confirmed system automatically shuts down in 60 seconds.

Software :: Keyboard Power Button To Shutdown Computer?

Jul 8, 2009

I have a Genius K627 Keyboard with Power, Sleep and Wake buttons. ACPI is unsupported on my computer, but it can turn off its power supply when the system halts (PM is ok). I would like to bind the Power key on the keyboard to execute the /sbin/halt command. What I already know is that I can specify an event in inittab (kbrequest) that would execute a command. What I don't know how I can make my system receive pressing Power button as a kbrequest. The scancodes of Power button on the keyboard (by showkey): 0x74 0xf4

This is the line I was talking about in my inittab:

Code:

ce:12345:kbrequest:/sbin/halt

I think I should edit /etc/console/boottime.kmap.gz but don't know how I could insert this scancode into it.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Make Computer Hibernate

Jun 30, 2010

After selecting Linux 2.6.23-22-generic 64-bit in the GRUB bootloader, I am staring at a black screen with a white flashing underscore for almost 2 minutes (usually between 1min40sec and 2min). The Linux kernel is loading here, and it's taking forever!

Once Plymouth starts it barely even manages to flash into view before it's done and I get to login, so bravo to Canonical. But seriously, I need that boot time cut down A LOT. Since I'm assuming it has quite some relevance, here's all my installed programs: (So if you know any offenders you can point them out) I can see it also lists packages I've removed after installing them. Removed packages are listed as "deinstall" and are, obviously, NOT installed or functioning, but their config files remain I assume. I also cannot make my computer hibernate, and if I try to put it to sleep when it's on critical power, it will continue waking up again until it runs so hard out of power it just dies.

acpidinstall
adduserinstall
adium-theme-ubuntuinstall

Hardware :: Boot - Down Button Remains Pressed ?

Sep 13, 2010

When I boot, apparently any Linux (Ubuntu and CloneZilla), I see the letters Code: ^]]B scroll pass, over and over again. This represents the down key as when I try to do anything the down key is held down. This occurs during boot on Ubuntu (once I get to the login screen it stops and does not happen). This does not happen at the GRUB screen or in Windows. It also occurs during the entire CloneZilla process and Ubuntu alternative install process (making both of these impossible)

I can't find any reason for this to happen and have been using both CloneZilla and Ubuntu for a long time before this happened. Does anyone know what I could try to fix this.

Ubuntu no longer boots.

General :: Make Shell Script Wait For A Particular Key Pressed In Order To Proceed?

Jan 30, 2010

i've been searching all over the internet for a way to let the user press a particular key let's say 'y' without the user having to press [Enter] as confirmationfor yes, this would then run another function.

Quote:

Book Inventory Summary Report:-

Title, Author, Price
______________________________
StarWars EP1, G.Lucas, $49.59
Harry Potter, Rowling, $45.98
The Matrix, Mr. Smith, $53.98

Press 'y' to make a copy of this result into a file or 'n' to return to the main menu.. I understand the "press any key to continue" would go something like

Code:

read -sn 1 -p "Press any key to continue.." But i try many different ways of getting the "press a particular key" function, and none of them works.

Debian Multimedia :: Xfce4-power-manager Doesn't React To Power Button / Fix It?

Jun 4, 2010

I use Squeeze with Xfce. My problem is that recently (after the xfce updates) the xfce power manager doesnt react to the power button - it is set to suspend. I dont have gnome-power manager or anything like it running.
If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again.
The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).

acpi_listen detects the button press.

Any thoughts?

Ubuntu :: At The Same Time It "blocks" The Mouse Left Button In The 'pressed' State?

Nov 2, 2010

I have a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 3000 (Wireless Keyboard 3000 + Wireless Mouse 5000), actually, I have two of them, one in this computer, running Ubuntu 10.10 and another one in a box running Ubuntu 10.04.In the box running 10.04 I can perfectly use 70% of the hotkeys the keyboard has, the 30% left I guess they're not compatible, but that's not a problem. In the one running 10.10 whenever I use a hotkey,t works, but, sametimet "blocks" the mouse left button in the 'pressed' state. Let me be more clear, it's like I'm holding down the left click all the time and I don't ever release it. Unless I restart the system, I can't recover the left click.

General :: Detecting Then Assigning Laptop's Start Button To Power Key In GNOME

Sep 4, 2010

How would I do this? First part of the thread title is because I'm not sure if the install of Debian Squeeze would even detect the Start key. (Btw, is there a small enough sticker of the GNOME logo I could buy and put over the Windows logo? )

I read this thread: [URL] but I'm confused about what linmix is saying. Is there a way to get the power key to do the equivalent of what it would in Windows?

I don't find this an essential task, but it would make life a lot easier.

Edit: I mean Super Key not Power.

General :: Ubuntu Gnome Applet Panel Power Button Won't Shutdown Machine

Nov 3, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.10 on e-machine T-1221 I can shut down the machine using :

sudo shutdown -h from terminal

I can shutdown using powerbutton on case. I can't use the applet indicator powerbutton in root account, but, I can use the command under "System-->-Shutdown" in root account, but I don't see "System-->-Shutdown" in users account. Is there a way to add it ? I installed Debian 6.0 Squeeze on my Acer Aspire 3620 Laptop it works just fine and has the same Gnome Desktop. The only thing different is that there is no powerbutton available thru Gnome applets, only the command on menu under" Sytem-->-Shutdown", which I'm fine with on this machine.

These are the things I tried on emachine T-1221

I tried "acpi=force"
I tried "noacpi"
I tried "noacpi nolapic"

I read the bug reports it stated that on live-cd there was only suspend and hibernate. There is no shutdown or reboot. I tried: "#start acpi", it closed with errors. It said that Ubuntu uses upstart. Is there a script which you can add to power button to add the shutdown.? Really I don't necessarily need powerbutton, I think the work around would be adding the command to "System-->-Menu.

Ubuntu :: Hibernate Will Not Power Off System

May 6, 2011

I've got a problem with hibernating my laptop. It manages to copy everything to swap memory, but when it finishes, it won't power off my laptop. I have to manually turn it off (by pressing the power button for a few seconds). If I restart, everything is still there, so the hibernating itself works, but not the powering off part. My laptop is an Asus notebook K52F with Ubuntu 11.04 and Gnome 3.

General :: Automate Computer To Power Off (and On Preferably) Under Certain Circumstances?

Dec 31, 2010

I've been using Windows Home Server as a Backup Appliance, Media Server and Share Server at home for some time. I decided it was costing me allot of juice so very early on added the "Lights Out" add-on to ensure it was only running as and when needed.

I'm now looking to switch to a Linux based server and I'm looking for a similar tool/set of tools for advanced power management.

Now the question;

Anyone got any all-in-one suggestions (i.e with client parts for both Windows and Linux and a server part for the Linux server), or can anyone simply verify that I'll need to set-up all the individual bits for this myself separately?

Fedora :: Remap The Power Button?

Oct 20, 2009

I've got a F10 machine set up as a media center (with mythtv...mythdora to be precise) and I love that it's based on fedora since I'm most familiar with it..I would like to map the power button press to a command "pkill X" since sometimes the frontend freezes and running this command kills X (I'm running ratpoison for the speed and simplicity...it just gets the job done and doesn't get in the way).Any help in mapping a single button press to "pkill X" would be greatly appreciated. I also need some help adding this command to the sudo list so the regular "mythtv" user will be able to run it...no password can be entered since the machine has no keyboard. Currently I log in via ssh to get this done but it would be nice to not have to boot up a laptop just to do this.
