Ubuntu :: Hangs At Startup On Image?
Aug 21, 2011
I recently installed the Ubuntu startup dsik on an external HDD, which I use as a portable version of Ubuntu everywhere I go
It now hangs at startup.... i.e., it comes to the "ubuntu" page, with the red& white rounds below, and does not go further... after 1 hour, the red point is still running...
I tried to see what was hapening, reading that disk from another computer, inspeted the /var/log syslog and boot, but I see nothing comes written there: it seems it has not reached that level.

VLC media player hangs OS when starting, presumably as it loads a new video file (.mp4 in my case). It doesn't happen every time, but after a few days it eventually freezes the system requiring a reset. Google shows many complaints on this, but no fix. Is there a solution?

I'm working on a custom Debian "spin" (one customized for personal/work use). I did this once before with an Ubuntu build, but attempting it with Debian has loaded me with a steady flow of walls (everyone loves debugging!). Despite a variety of approaches, none of my images seem to boot. I've tried the following with both SysV and systemd. the search results I find are vague, at best. I'll attempt to categorize and explain this as intelligently as possible.
A variety of ISOs were tried in Virtualbox, so these are the errors they're yielding; I'm currently down on removable media since I loaned my flash disks to a couple students for their finals, so I can't boot that way until Tuesday. I really hope that the error is something that can be identified regardless of whether or not I'm using a virtual environment.
Method 1: This Guide
This appealed to me the most at first because I run a stripped-the-hell-down version of Ubuntu on my work laptop. (Wheezy/Haswell yielded unfavorable results, and at the time Jessie's SysV compatibility was undesirable, but I'll probably switch back by the end of the week if possible.) I have a feeling that this guide may simply be obsolete, or maybe I'm just neglecting a crucial step. Here's the output: a lovely kernel panic.
Method 2: refractasnapshot
With it properly configured (and with syslinux-utils installed -- head-on-a-stick and fsmithred), I tried two different approaches: the first, I ran it within the chroot environment mentioned above; the second, I created a Virtualbox build and ran it within that. Both yielded the same errors:
For each, I received two complains: about piix_smbus and no valid rapl domains, and the system hangs indefinitely (ie, all night). Following some search results, I blacklisted i2c_piix4 and paevm, then rebuilt the image, and mounted it in VirtualBox. At boot:
Code: Select allEDD: Error 0c00 reading sector 276375
No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found!
boot: _

I'm a pro Windows user, but I'm kinda new to Linux/Ubuntu.
I've installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my notebook and I've having terrible hiccups. When I boot the notebook, it comes to the login screen and I login, and all is well so far.
After the login animation, it shows me my wallpaper, and the top panel, and the netbook-launcher is just launching when a portion of the screen turns white - like it's hanged. I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, Alt+F4 and Alt+F2 but with no luck. The only way out of this is a cold reboot(pressing the power button for 4 seconds). After a number of reboots, it logs in.
I don't know if this helps or if it has anything to do with the problem, but I added Pidgin to the startup applications a few days back.

Ubuntu hangs at start up.Im running 10.10 from a wubi installation - without any problems since. Now, I select the kernel, do ENTER, then I get the blinking big dos-like cursor (still normal)but when it should show the list of "checks".( I dont know how this is called where it checks services, battery state and comments everything with [OK]) it suddenly hangs. All I get is a small blinking cursor, but not more. I need to power down and turn my computer on again, then it usually works.

I booted up the computer (Fedora 11) and it hung at the blue screen with the F bubble in the middle. I waited for quite sometime without any change to the system I held down the power button to power off and tried starting the computer again with the same result.
When the sytem reboots and I press alt+ctrl+2 i see messages like below on the black screen:Unknown username "root" in message bus configuration file.Could not get password database....Failed to start message bus: Could not get UID and GID for username "dbus"..Please help me get the system up. I saved some data and did not take a backup. Is there's a way I can restore my system to a previous date? Or backup my data somehow?

Iam using fedora 12. I have been trying to run ganymede eclipse but it hangs with an empty dialog box after the splash screen.
I have searched around the net and found that this is caused by an update in xulrunner. Anyway to fix this. Iam currently using the latest versions from the yum repository. Following is the error log taken from workspace/.metadata.
Code:

I have just installed Fedora 12 on my old AMD64 desktop. The install went fine, I then set about adding various useful things like skype, flash plugin- some manually, some with autoten.
Upon rebooting, the system hangs. Looking at the text startup, the last line before it hangs is:
Starting jexec servicesStarting yum-updatesd: [OK]
After this line appears, the display flashes repeatedly then does nothing. It sits there with the text showing (or on graphical startup, the splash screen disappears) and a cursor flashing.
I think the problem may be with the nvidia driver I installed with autoten, which I suspect is wrong for my system (think my graphics card is too old).
Does anyone know how I might remove the driver given I can't get as far as logging in at the moment? Or am I wrong and the problem likely to be something else?

I am trying to create a bootable USB drive. I go to System > Administration > Startup Disk Creator and click on 'Other' as the image I want to use is not listed. I then find the Chrome OS image and double click but then I return to the Disk Creator and it is still not listed as the source disk.
So does anybody know how to get around this so I can use this program to create a bootable USB drive, or another way that I can create one? I have used the Disk Creator to create a bootable version of Jolicloud (which is probably one of the worst Linux distros out there) before, but now it won't work.

Like the subject says, the whole system just hangs at gdm startup. No mouse or keyboard response. Didn't have this problem with lenny. My guess is there might be a problem with the graphics drivers. The box has ati rage 128 pro graphics card.

At the Get Slackware page at the Slackware website it gives a list of addresses which when I click one of the addresses it redirects to another page with a list of mirror images. Which address and which mirror image do I need to work with Kubuntu 11.04 on my netbook so I can create a USB startup disk? With my connection speed these mirror image downloads take about an hour and a half and I cannot just be guessing which mirror image to download.

After a while I get the error "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode"
"your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself."
I press, OK I'm given several options. I can select them but they don't do anything. in respect to reconfiguring my hardware

I am trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on a HP Pavilion p6565uk.
My PC is x64 compatible, although ubuntu will not install.
I don't get to any gui, it says ubuntu will continue install in 5 seconds, at 0, nothing happens. The CPU light is flashing, but nothing happens.
After about 10 minutes, it reboots, but when the HP splash screen shows (Before the boot selection screen) it just hangs. I have to do a hard shutdown to boot back up.
I am using wubi for install.

I was given a forensic Image which I now know is a DD image of the drive (Vista) and am trying to mount the image or extract the image to another drive. I'm not sure of the extention type or if the image is a partition or the entire drive. I think it is the entire drive.
Is it possible to mount a DD image to a device. If I can't do that I just want to extract the files to run some programs against the drive. Can I view the files under Ubuntu or do I have to remove the drive and stick it into a Vista computer.
I purchased a second drive today and was hoping the command line would be something simple.
Or am I on the wrong track, should I be doing this all in a windows environment. The reason I picked ubuntu was because of the reporting tools.

I have just exported 3 png files out of gimp for a html document I'm working on right now, and they are all almost the same, except I need each to load when the user does something. So the first image will display on the page, and when a user puts their cursor over it, then it will load image 2. When they press it, it loads image 3.

WTF why is it with every update the devs try to break something. Might as well be using Ubuntu at this point and No I do not want to install Stable. Todays updqate would bring in linux-image-2.6.39-1-686-pae linux-image-686-pae, but my CPU Single core Intel Pentium M (-UP-) cache 1024 KB flags (sse sse2) bmips 1196.07 clocked at 600.00 MHz doesn't use PAE so it told me to remove linux-image-686 and to install linux-image-486. So more shiny crap that doesn't support older hardware, it is getting to be as bad as Microsoft.
Why don't I just go upgrade or buy new hardware with every new shiny crap that wants to upgrade. If it isn't broken do NOT fsck with it.

For a given user on a given networked system, starting KDE (slackware 13.1 stock) hangs during the startup. CNTL+ALT+Fx gets out, and KDE / X can be shutdown with a CNTL+C, however, afterwards doing a df hangs bash.My guess is that there is something IO oriented, as top shows a load of 9+.
There is 5% iowait according to iostat.

I just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?
PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour

I was so pleased with Ubuntu (9.10) on my desktop that I installed it on my laptop, too. However, on the laptop (but not on the desktop) I cannot shut down properly. I get a black screen with the following text:
Ubuntu 9.10 (my computer name) ttyl (my computer name) login: (flashing cursor)
On one occasion I got:
Ubuntu 9.10 (my computer name) ttyl (my computer name) login: init: usplash main process (10187) killed by TERM signal
In either case it hangs there and does not completely shut down.
