Ubuntu :: Hangs At Startup After Kernel Selection

Apr 13, 2011

Ubuntu hangs at start up.Im running 10.10 from a wubi installation - without any problems since. Now, I select the kernel, do ENTER, then I get the blinking big dos-like cursor (still normal)but when it should show the list of "checks".( I dont know how this is called where it checks services, battery state and comments everything with [OK]) it suddenly hangs. All I get is a small blinking cursor, but not more. I need to power down and turn my computer on again, then it usually works.

Ubuntu :: Kernel Selection At Startup?

Oct 14, 2010

Before I had to re-install, because I ran out of space on my partition and could not grow it, I had a setting that would not show the selection screen for the different kernels at start up.

Does anyone know how to set the start up as such that the selection screen does not show?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 Hangs On User Selection After Upgrade

May 16, 2010

I recently went the upgrade route and something went wrong either with the download or the installation or 10.04 and my hardware are having issues. I am looking for some advice for either fixing what is wrong or getting some additional data backed up to USB before wiping the partition and starting new.

My computer is dual-boot using Grub2, the other OS being Windows Vista. I can get to Windows Vista fine via GRUB. When I select Ubuntu (says kernel 2.6.31-21) though I don't get very far.

At this point I can get 10.04 all the way to the user selection screen, where it immediately freezes, forcing a hard reset. I can boot into recovery mode, but if I select failsafeX it freezes at the first screen that comes up--the notice you are running in low res graphics mode.

When I did the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 I used the update tool in Ubuntu. However I also now have a 10.04 install CD.

My graphics cards are twin NVidia 9600s in SLI. I would say it is a graphics card problem since the first graphical screen that comes up both in regular boot (the login screen) and failsafeX (the notice screen) I get a hard lock. However booting off the CD it loads the desktop just fine!

I would just wipe clean however my last data backup was partial and there is some stuff I would like to go back in and get. However neither method I have used to try and go back in to get what I need has succeeded. I have a 320G USB drive I use for backing up certain data. If I boot using the CD, it gives me an error message about the isntaller then goes to desktop (which works fine, even though I can't get past the login screen when booting 10.04 from the hard drive) I can then plug in the USB drive fine and it shows up, but some of the files on the Ubuntu installation don't give me permission to copy them. There is an 'X' on the icon and I don't know whether there is a way to get me authenticated in order to copy them from the CD desktop.

Alternatively, I can get to a root prompt if I boot into recovery mode (not the CD, just recovery mode from GRUB). I assume I can move them from there and that the permissions issue won't be a problem but when I plug in the USB drive I don't get any errors but I am not seeing it show up in /media. Also if I put a DVD-RW (all I have on hand) into my DVD-RW drive maybe I could back the data up to that, but I'm not familiar with how to do that from the command line.

If I could get to a point where I could verify that I have this extra bit of data backed up then I wouldn't have any problem wiping the partition and starting over.

Ubuntu Servers :: Force Kernel Selection Time-out?

Aug 7, 2011

I have set the kernel selection time out to 3 seconds. However, sometimes it just hangs indefinitely on the kernel selection screen until I manually select the kernel. This is bad news since it is a VM started up from a script and _has_ to start automatically. The VM is a re-constructed cloud backup made by rsync and re-running grub.

Is there any way to force Ubuntu to NEVER, under any circumstances, not time out on kernel selection.

Ubuntu :: Pae Kernel - Selection From List Appears After Grub Load?

Aug 23, 2010

I am currently running 9.10 ubuntu (gnome). I have a dual core intel chip at 3.00 ghz. My mobo is an ASUS P5ND2-SLI. My mobo will support up to 8gb of ram. Now, as we all know, 32-bit os/kernel will only support like 3.2gb, and 64-bit like 4gb. I'd like to install a pae kernel so I can get the most from my mobo, but honestly, I don't have a clue where to start looking for a pae kernel. I'd like to be able to select it from the list that already appears after the grub loads, and if I like it, be able to remove the rest from the list, or just make it default.

Question, in CPU-G, it says my architecture is i686. I don't know if that's the os/distro, or the kernel itself. it also lists the GCC version as 4.4.1 and Xorg as 1.6.4. my current kernel is Linux 2.6.31-22-generic. Again, I'm trying to find a pae kernel, but I don't know if my os/distro will make a difference, if the architecture is the kernel or os itself. I am still fairly new to ubuntu, and I must say, I've made the switch completely from windows.. which blows...

Ubuntu :: Cannot Boot - Grub Kernel Selection Displayed - Freeze After 3 Sec

Jul 31, 2011

I locked the screen, came back, typed the password, screen remained black, though cursor was visible and moving. Nothing I could do to rejuvenate the screen. Had to switch to tty6, sudo shutdown -r now. Then, on reboot obtained kernel selection, it proceeded to displaying kernel messages, but froze on sdb, after 3 secs. I figured it was the usb, so turned off, removed usb cables to external hard drives, but again it froze saying something about firewire mouse, the mouse is also usb. I tried several times, but no matter what kernel I chose, I couldn't get it to boot. So I loaded puppy live cd, but now it can't access some parts of the disk. I was running utorrent and the folder with partially downloaded files can be accessed but there's nothing there (there was), and some folders can't be accessed at all.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Hangs After Keyboard Selection?

Aug 16, 2010

I have an AMD Athlon 3200+ 64 and I want to install a dual boot Win7/Xubuntu system. When I try to install Xubuntu 64 bit, but the also the 32 bit version and both Kubuntu versions, the installation stops after the keyboard layout screen. The install completely hangs (no cd or other noticeable activity on the computer) and I have to do a hard reboot to get out of it. I've been looking for a solution and found that the options noapic and/or nolapic in the installer F6 menu might solve this problem, unfortunately they didn't work for me. I've done the CD integrety and memory checks, but no errors were found. I'm pretty lost from here.

I also read installing from the alternative CD might work, but I'm not sure what to expect from this textual installation. If it's only a command-line installer I don't think I will be able to do much with it as I haven't yet been able to find a tutorial on how to use it. Does anyone konw where I can find instructions?

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 From DVD - Load Kernel Operation Hangs At 97% (using Both Normal And Safe Kernel)

Feb 23, 2010

I am an experienced Linux admin and have been using SuSE for many years. My development machine has had every version of SuSE since '02 and although it is a little old, is in good working order. (AMD
2400, 2 gig RAM, 160 Gig IDE disks - SuSE on disk 2) (OpenSuSE 11.1 with the latest kernel works perfectly. This install is on a spare HDD prior to doing a full install on my usual HDD.)

When I try to install SuSE 11.2 from DVD, the load kernel operation hangs at 97% (using both normal and safe kernel), however, I can install from live CD without any problem. I have tried the same DVD on a few "older" machines and had the same problem. I initially thought it was the actual DVD but re-burning has the same problem. I have also tried another DVD writer - same problem.

Ubuntu :: Netbook Launcher Hangs On Startup ?

Apr 10, 2010

I'm a pro Windows user, but I'm kinda new to Linux/Ubuntu.

I've installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my notebook and I've having terrible hiccups. When I boot the notebook, it comes to the login screen and I login, and all is well so far.

After the login animation, it shows me my wallpaper, and the top panel, and the netbook-launcher is just launching when a portion of the screen turns white - like it's hanged. I press Ctrl+Alt+F1, Alt+F4 and Alt+F2 but with no luck. The only way out of this is a cold reboot(pressing the power button for 4 seconds). After a number of reboots, it logs in.

I don't know if this helps or if it has anything to do with the problem, but I added Pidgin to the startup applications a few days back.

Fedora X86/64bit :: 12 X86_64 Hangs On Startup?

Jan 17, 2010

I have just installed Fedora 12 on my old AMD64 desktop. The install went fine, I then set about adding various useful things like skype, flash plugin- some manually, some with autoten.

Upon rebooting, the system hangs. Looking at the text startup, the last line before it hangs is:

Starting jexec servicesStarting yum-updatesd: [OK]

After this line appears, the display flashes repeatedly then does nothing. It sits there with the text showing (or on graphical startup, the splash screen disappears) and a cursor flashing.

I think the problem may be with the nvidia driver I installed with autoten, which I suspect is wrong for my system (think my graphics card is too old).

Does anyone know how I might remove the driver given I can't get as far as logging in at the moment? Or am I wrong and the problem likely to be something else?

Ubuntu :: 9.04 Hangs Up On Kernel After Reboot

Sep 4, 2010

My old laptop has a broken screen. I tried using an external flat screen and win-xp would not run this screen. This is how I came to learn about Ubuntu. I loaded Ubuntu 9.4 and the computer worked with the external screen. The only problem was that during the boot process the (kernel text?) the white text on black screen over ran the edges of the external screen. Once the Ubuntu was loaded the window fit the screen perfect. Now my new problem. After a year of perfect use, the battery ran down and the computer shut itself off.

When I put the charger back on and rebooted the laptop, the ubuntu partly opens then hangs up on the kernal (white text on black screen) because of the screen overrun problem I can not read the text. I can boot still boot from the 9.4 CD. Is there anyway I can correct the problem by re-installing 9.4 but not wiping out my person data and files. In other words is there any way to repair the O/s that is defective, without losing my work?

Fedora :: 11 And Kernel 2.6.30 Series Causes Hangs?

Feb 18, 2010

I see there are lots of messages about fedora 12 freezing.Actually I have such a problem with fedora 11 since I updated to kernel 2.6.30. My laptop, all of a sudden, freezes. Everything is freezed: mouse is not working, keyboard not responding (hitting caps lock produces nothing), can't switch to terminals, ctrl+alt+canc don't work. I can just push the power button to shutdown the system. BUT the hard disk activity is still going on. I can see and hear the sleeping daemons that cause some usual disk activity while the rest of the system is completely freezed. My system is a HP DV5-1025el with an AMD Turion ZM-80, Ati Radeon HD3450, 4Gb of RAM and 250gb HDD.I got fedora 11 regularly updated, now has kernel 2.6.30.10-105.2.23.fc11, but it is used to happen also with older 2.6.30 kernels, NEVER happened with 2.6.29 kernels. Video driver isn't the cause, since it happens with both proprietary fglrx and OSS radeon drivers.

Ubuntu :: Minimal Kernel Recompile- Init Hangs At Plymouth

Dec 23, 2010

I've been playing around in attempt to see how small a usable kernel I can build. The theory is that it should mainly be useful for preparing a recovery disk or some such thing; disk drivers and a few network drivers are what goes in.

I built the kernel with the attached config. It boots, reaches the hdd (if I specify root as /dev/sda5 manually), then dies when it tries to start Plymouth (something about catching a SEGV signal). What needs to be enabled to run Plymouth? Alternatively, has anyone managed to remove plymouth from boot on Maverick?

(That would require a modified mountall version, I know.) I'm using the mainstream kernel 2.6.32.27 sources on Maverick (yes, I know Maverick uses 2.6.35; but this does boot).

Hardware: Wireless-RTL8192SE b/g/n, uses an out-of-tree driver (r8192se_pci, from Realtek; Ubuntu builds in an older version of this driver); r8169 works for ethernet; ATI Radeon Mobility 3200 graphics, AMD Neo X2 cpu; SATA hd in AHCI mode.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Hangs On Boot - Start With Older Kernel Works?

I've recently upgraded to Natty (11.04).The problem that is now occurring, and reoccurring, is like this:- Computer boots, but hangs on a purple screen (nothing on it). Nothing happens, after 15 minutes or so I give up waiting and hard reset.- Boot via Grub (holding shift) into recovery-mode: works fine, but I want the GUI, so I reboot.- After reboot the system hangs again, as mentioned before.- Hard reset again, and booting a previous kernel (2.6.32.8 ): works fine!- Restart again, boots in most recent kernel (2.6.38.10): works fine now.- Try to shutdown/restart again, problem re-occurs every time. So I use the workaround with the extra startup with the older kernel again.and finally typing this.

Ubuntu :: Hangs On Boot Up After Most Recent Kernel Update To Version 2.6.38-11

Sep 1, 2011

The most recent kernel update, to version 2.6.38-11 has been a horror. It hangs on boot up. Sometimes I can get to the log in screen, then it hangs there as well. However, after 3-5 reboots (which is absolutely annoying to do when I just want to use my computer), it sometimes loads up finally. However, if I go to older Linux version in the Grub menu, then I can select 2.6.38-10 and it runs just fine.

So I am looking for a way to fix this problem, whether it be removing the most recent kernel update, or making 2.6.38-10 boot up by default. I noticed that the kernels are listed in the synaptic package manager, but I am afraid to remove the most recent one via synaptic. Is it as simple as removing the Linux version and headers I don't want, or are there other things I need to do in order to make 2.6.38-10 my default kernel at start-up?

Fedora :: Latest Kernel And Terminal Hangs?

Feb 26, 2010

I've noticed a bad behaviour with the latest 2 Fedora kernel releases:

- it happens with 2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64 and 2.6.31.12-174.2.3.fc12.x86_64

- but 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 is OK

The problem is as follows: Any kind of terminal application (any X based terminal and the console itself) hangs on certain operations involving colors from what I've seen

E.g. 'ls -F --color' as predefined in Fedora works but 'ls -F --color -a' hangs. Midnight Commander also hangs but works on black and white.

My terminal is xterm-256color under X and linux under console.

Other observations:

- it happens on a AMD machine but not on an Intel i.e. not all hardware is affected (couldn't narrow it more)

- same machine, same software stack but with kernel 2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 works OK
