Ubuntu :: HP DV6700 Installation - Screen Messed Up

Oct 8, 2010

First off I'm loving my ubuntu experience on my other devices. My netbook and other laptops run wonderfully. I'm trying to get my HP dv6700 up and running but I'm having trouble right out of the gate. When I boot up on the CD the screen becomes "messed up". I can actually still see what is there, I just see basically three copies of everything, almost like it is out of sync. I assume this is a graphics card driver issue but how can I resolve this when it does it upon the installation screen? I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04.1.

My screen gets all messed up (pixelated) for about a second when starting Maverick10.10. It first started when loading Blender2.56. Can someone explain to me what maybe causing this as I don't even know if it's a graphics card issue or not. I tried searching on the net for people with similar problems but couldn't find anything. Ubuntu :: Login Screen Pops Up But The Resolution Is Messed Up

May 4, 2011

After a lot of headache and time I was finally able to get Ubuntu 11.04 64bit installed along side my Windows 7 64bit installation. The whole process was hindered by the screen resolution being really off, looked like this LINK (aspect ratio of (16:10) I believe it was). After much fiddling i was able to get the installation started hoping that in the end it would let me set the res. correctly once it was installed. About 75% of the way done it threw an error saying there was either a problem with the HDD or the CD, I know my HDD is fine, so I booted up windows and set up my USB thumb drive as the installation device, Unbootable.

My next attempt i hooked the laptop to my internet via cable and started the installation again, this time i found that I could set the res of the LiveCD (which was a pain in the neck) and this time Ubuntu installed and upgraded and seemed all sorts of happy! Once the PC rebooted and i selected to boot into Ubuntu, the(what i suppose is) login screen pops up but the resolution is messed up again and this time I can't navigate at all. I've tried just typing in my password and hitting enter as i can see that it is by default selecting my user name to login with.

Ubuntu :: Screen After Login - Computers Graphics Get Messed Up

Jul 15, 2011

I've got an HP ThinClient that my computer dumped in the recycling pile. I swapped out the ATA 1-gig flash drive, and replaced it with a 60 gig ATA hard drive. I installed Ubuntu on it through a flash-drive, and everything comes up just fine. When I boot up the computer, I get the ubuntu screen, it comes to the login, I select my username and enter my password. I hear the little jingle music, and then the computers graphics get messed up. I still see the mouse, and it appears as though I'm opening windows, but they come up really as just screwed up boxes that are black or other colors and the graphics get all distorted.

I just figured out how to get into the GRUB menu, and I was able to boot in reduced graphics mode. verything seems to be in 16 colors, but I can actually log in now and see everything! (really cool). Just to give an update, I can log into the computer using rescue mode, and I can do everything on the computer that I want to in 16-color mode or whatever that mode is. As soon as I reboot in the normal mode, the graphics mess up as SOON as I log in.

Ubuntu :: Fedora's Grub Messed Up Login Splash Screen?

Jun 4, 2011

I installed Fedora on a separate partition and during the install prompts forgot to uncheck the Grub installation. So, Fedora installed with Grub 1 (imagine that) although I was able to find instructions to upgrade it to Grub 2 (plus it recognized all the OS on the computer). So far so good, I don't have a preference whether Fedora's or Ubuntu's Grub is installed, however the Ubuntu Startup Splash screen is messed up, ie. a simple purple background with "Ubuntu" in system fonts. Is there a way to fix this back to the graceful default splash screen? Can I change back the Grub to be Ubuntu's?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Second Monitor Works Fine But Main Screen Messed Up

As it turns out, the second monitor works fine, but then my main screen is messed up. I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 and I'm doing this on a HP Pavilion DV4000 laptop. My main screen shows just the bottom (cca) 400 pixels of the wallpaper, no bottom panel, no desktop icons. And I'm kind of scared to remove the second monitor now cause I don't know what I'll do if I don't get the main screen back.. Well, other than installing 9.10 beta that is..

I was in the middle of deleting the Xine movie player, and clicked a box wrong. I lost everything possible on the graphical desktop as well as a log in screen for Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). Since then I did a few things:1. apt-get install ubuntu-desktop2. apt-get install kubuntu-desktop3. apt-get remove kubuntu-desktopAfter all this, I still have the login screen for Kubuntu. But I don't want that. I want to get back to the Ubuntu login screen, and the orange colored desktop. Right now -- after I log in -- I only have a terminal to use. And I have the blue background of Kubuntu. What do I need to do to get rid of the Kubuntu graphics and back to my original login screen, plus the Ubuntu (karmic) graphics and toolbars / menus?

Ubuntu :: Install Messed Up By Ati AGAIN Recovering From A Live USB Stick?

May 20, 2011

So i was trying to run an application the other day and it required newer graphics drivers, so i reluctantly updated them as i have had endless troubles with them before. Surprise surprise on rebooting the system i was confronted with a black screen.

So i decided to go into recovery mode to try to un-install the drivers and i think that was successful, but i can't be sure since when i reboot the system now even in recovery mode i get a blank screen.

So i am wondering how i can fix the system from booting into a live USB stick as it is the only way i can really gain access to the system. I think to fix it i will either need to some how remove and re-install the working ati drivers or do a system restore, but i have no idea if the latter is possible or not, and I am not too sure on how to install the drivers to a file system from a live distro.

OpenSUSE Install :: Messed Up Booting Selection?

Mar 16, 2010

Seems I have messed up something.I can boot into openSUSE and into Vista, so it is not screwed.I have 1 hard diskI have an OEM Vista (so a 9 GB EISA rescue partition), the Vista partition (~100GB) and the 3 partitions for openSUSE (2/20/467).Before just wiping the linux partitions I tried to switch back to M$ booting but failed. ATM I boot to splash screen showing 3 entries: 2 openSUSE and 1 windows. When I choose Windows I get to the next screen showing Windows and - ubuntu (I had ubuntu via wubi before but wasn't convinced, so (w)ubuntu does not exist anymore).I thought installing openSUSE will fix the issue that ubuntu shows up on M$ booting screen but ofc I was wrong.I didn't want to wipe the still unused openSUSE partitions before being successfull so instead I tried:

- booting into M$ rescue CL: bootrec /fixmbr does not give an error but bootrec /fixboot or /rebuildbcd - automatic system repair does not show any partition, fixboot /scanos finds C:
- using bcdedit and EasyBCD (fail)

OpenSUSE Install :: Messed Up NVidia Driver After Upgrade

I did an upgrade of Nvidia(Latest version v.196) and KDE-base4 to KDE 4.4.4(I think) in Yast2. Now when I reboot the X doesnt start. I claim it can't find any nvidia-module. I thing the upgrade of Nvidia v.196 failed, so I need to know how to reinstall Nvidia in console(CLI). It only boot up in cli. I thought it is so simple to just download the latest driver and install in CLI, but my NetworkManager doesnt start eighter so I don't have any network.

OpenSUSE 11.2 64bits
KDE 4.4.x
Nvidia NV140 Quadro 512MB

I guess my mistake was to upgrade both KDE and Nvidia in the same operation.

OpenSUSE Install :: Fix NTFS Partition Messed Up By Qparted Resize?

Apr 22, 2010

I used QParted to size one my hard drive's NTFS partition to make unallocated space available to install SUSE. QParted created the the unalloacted space fine and I got SUSE up and running.

However, the NTFS partition is messed up. The QParted GUI and the SUSE's Disk management GUI shows it as NTFS drive with 319 GB space. However, nothing seem to be able to read/write to it. QParted gives a warning "Unable to read contents of this file system! Because of this some operations maybe unavailable." Is there any way to fix this NTFS partition so I can recover data from it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Clock Messed Up 2 Hours Early Or Forward - Idk

Jun 14, 2010

i probably messed up the clock somehow... I think during install. Linux keeps messing up windows clock... And vice versa... When the clock in windows is correct (say, 2 PM), the clock in Linux when i reboot says 4 PM... And when i set up the clock in Linux to the correct time (in this case 2 PM) and boot into windows, windows clock says 12 PM...

Of course, when i correct it in windows, linux clock gets messed up again... 2 hours early or forward, idk... I'm not sure what i did to make this happen... Maybe has something to do with hardware clock... I don't wanna constantly correct time whenever i change systems...

Ubuntu / Apple :: Install With REFIt On MacBook Pro: Grub Apparently Messed Up My Windows 7 Boot?

Mar 10, 2011

This seems to be a variant of a problem many people have had, but after several hours trawling through various forums, I haven't seen a reliable match for my situation. In brief:Adding a third boot partition (of Ubuntu) to my existing dual boot of OSX 10.6 and Windows 7 seems to have crippled the Windows boot from working, because Grub apparently takes over the process. Yet Grub does *not* appear to be on the Windows partition.

More verbose:I have an older MacBook Pro (3.1, running Snow Leopard) that I recently refitted with a new 240GB SSD HD. With the extra space (it was previously only 120GB) I decided to add a dual boot with Windows 7 using bootcamp. This all went swimmingly well.Encouraged, I decided to follow this Lifehacker article's suggestion and triple-boot the machine with Ubuntu (I'd never used Linux before):So I now have the nice rEFIt boot partition selection screen, and, indeed, I'm up and running in Ubuntu, and enjoying it.

Only one problem: I can't get into Windows any more. If I try to go in through rEFIt *or* by holding down OPT at startup and selecting the windows partition directly, the result is the same: I get thrown into Grub's selector, and selecting the Windows partition from there leads to an error message and a dead end.Having read through numerous postings, I get the impression that Grub is doing something or living somewhere that it ought not to be, but in most cases I've seen, people had accidentally installed Grub onto the Windows partition (or indeed onto EVERY partition). So far as I can tell, this isn't the case with me. Here's my boot summary:

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Increase Resolution Than At Least Stretch The Screen To Full Screen?

Aug 27, 2011

I recently upgraded my graphics card from a Geforce 7600GS to a Gefore 560Ti. And while most things are normal, during boot up my screen isn't "full screen" until X is started, after which everything else is fine. Essentially, all display, the grub menu, the splash screen, console text, etc, is within a box on the screen, with 2" on the left and right, and 1" top and bottom of empty blackness.

From what I understand, this is because the framebuffer is using the wrong resolution, but the maximum resolution that hwinfo --framebuffer returns is 1280x1024 (which I am already using "0x031a".) (My monitors is natively 1920x1080) Is it possible to do something about this? If not increase resolution than at least stretch the screen to full screen?

sudo /usr/sbin/hwinfo --framebuffer

OpenSUSE Install :: Don't See The Login Screen / Get A Screen With Squares And Rectangles

Mar 27, 2011

I installed opensuse11.4 few minutes back. The install was absolutely smooth. I have dual boot, Win Xp and 11.4 now. But for some reason I do not see the login screen but instead I see a green screen with squares and stripes. Login in the failsafe mode is successful. How do I fix it?

Also noticed the following,

1) Initially the splash screen picks up the right resolution 1024*768 and then it changes it to a higher resolution. This I think I can fix, because I had faced a similar problem with 11.3 as well.

Graphics Card: GeForce 7025/ nForce 630a.
