Ubuntu :: Guarddog - Cannot Run Pogo Games When The Firewall Is Enabled
Aug 11, 2009
I'm running Jaunty. For some reason, I cannot run Pogo games when the firewall is enabled. I've tried allowed "direct play gaming", thinking that might help, but it didn't. So i guess I need a custom protocol. What ports does Pogo use so I can allow them? Hopefully someone knows... and yes, I do have java. Pogo works if I turn the firewall off. Also, Ktorrent does not work either. I happen to know the ports this one uses, but when I make the protocol, it still doesn't allow torrents to run. The ports I'm trying are 6881 and UDP 4444.
2. PC with wired Internet connection + WIFI adapter OS: Windows XP Connection name and parameters same as above except ip: 192.168.1.40
I can see trial is getting connected with excellent strength. When i try to run an Internet on Ubuntu it is not working. Firewall is not active and Router is enabled.
When I enable my ufw it completely shuts me out and I have no internet connection. When I do:
Code: sudo ufw status numbered I get: Status: active
To Action From -- ------ ---- [ 1] 80 ALLOW IN Anywhere [ 2] 80 ALLOW OUT Anywhere (out)
But I need to disable my ufw in order to reconnect back to the internet. Why is that? Doesn't the above rules indicate that I should have inbound and outbound traffic even if my firewall is up?
Im a long time windows user and just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and have heard that i dont need any antivirus or spyware program on it, also is the firewall enabled by default if there is one and last thing do you need to do things like disk clean and defrag if so how.
i am using 9.10 karmic. Firewall is enabled. added ports with ufw allow [portnumber], and i still cannot connect to a port number. iv tryed ufw allow ssh/tcp but that does not work. the ports work when i disable the firewall and i dont want to do that.
ufw is available in all new installations of Ubuntu since 8.04 LTS, but is disabled by default. The standard Ubuntu installation has a no open service ports policy, so enabling the firewall by default doesn't gain any extra security in the default installation, but could provide confusion for people new to Ubuntu when new software that is installed does not work because of restrictive firewall rules. As a result, when first adding ufw to Ubuntu it was decided that users must 'opt-in' to using the firewall. In Ubuntu 9.04 and later, you can enable ufw during installation using preseeding. See /usr/share/doc/ufw/README.Debian for details.
I have installed the graphic user interface for IPtables and enabled this firewall. However, I find it a bit strange. What is the difference between rejecting and denying the traffic? If I want to configure IPtables as two-way, how can I define which of my apps can connect to the internet and which can't? If this firewall is enabled, does it really run in the background, protecting the user,or does it run only when its GUI is opened?
I have problem on VPS running opensuse. When I enable firewall outbound connections stop working. I have tried everything I know (not much when it comes to firewall (iptables)) but could not solve this.
I use Karmic 64 bit and have installed Guarddog. When i try to fire up empathy and gtalk, network connection is refused. Clearly, I need to allow a protocol in guarddog. Gtalk uses (I believe) XMPP - which is not listed in Guarddog.
what I could do to let Empathy connect to gtalk servers?
I am using gmote on my android phone to control my desktop. this works fine when guarddog is disabled and even though i have legato networking protocol enabled (this is the port range gmote is supposed to use 8889 and 9901) i am still having no luck locating my desktop with the firewall enabled.
I just installed Slack 13.1 x64 on my laptop and set up multilib per Alien Bob's wiki. I even successfully compiled and installed grub afterwards. But, am having big problems trying to compile or install guarddog. On my 1st try, I downloaded guarddog from Slackbuilds and replaced the SlackBuild script with this one which is off a thread in this forum:
Code:
It **appears** to compile, but, no .tgz package is made. I have folders and files under /tmp/SBo.
So, then I went back to SlackBuilds and downloaded this, original, 12.2 SlackBuild file:
I suspect this is an initial configuration bug. All firewall logs seem to be going to all three files. That causes a lot of clutter in the log files, and makes it difficult to see whether there are any serious problems being logged.
I am learning to setup firewall in my home for that i have selected four system(sys1,sys2....sys4) for testing .I have configured sys2 to act as a firewall with two NIC. sys3 and sys4 are inside the firewall . sys1 is not connected to firewall for testing purpose.
the IP assignments are follows :
sys1 : ( fedora, not connected to firewall i am thinking, But i am not sure )
what happened is that sys1(not connected to firewall) can ssh to sys4(connected,inside firewall),since the rules are written not to ssh form sys1 to sys4..
then I came to know whatever the request I give, It directly goes as sys1 --> sys4. Not as sys1-----> sys2(firewall)---> sys4 .and the firewall is not filtering and processing anything for both inbound and outbound (i think it's my mistake some where). the requests are directly going inside without firewall.
I'm trying to build firewall on Debian with 'Firewall Builder'. But it won't let me compile and run unless one interface is set as management. There are two interfaces on my computer: 'eth0' and 'lo'
I don't want to be able to configure firewall remotely, so could I use 'lo' as 'management interface'?
Samba is working correctly if Susefirewall2 is off. I have added Samba client and Samba Services for extern access but samba is not working when firewall is now on. Which services should I also add ?
I have an R4 for my ds,i was wondering if it was possible to get nes roms to play on it. The only tutorials i was able to find only seemed to work on windoze. How can i achieve this?
I just made the switch from windows xp and i am very glad i did. One problem though, I cant get steam games to run right. I have steam installed on an external hard drive and can start it up with wine but whenever i try to run a game, the "starting (game name here)" screen comes up and then disappears and the game doesn't open. I've tried several different tutorials on how to run steam but all they do is tell how to install it.I'm running ubuntu 9.10 x64 if that helps at all.
what is the best mac emulator? a friend was talking about running some games through mac emulator, but i didnt get a chance to ask him about it. and how do yall mostly run games? i tried a couple games using wine, but some games do not work. though i have not tried a whole lot.
A friend of mine gave me a few .iso games that will work just from the computer...not using a cd drive. I figured out how to do it in windows, it was pretty easy, but in ubuntu its not as easy. I got some tips on how to mount...and after some experimenting i got it to work. So i installed Morrowind thru Wine. And it starts the opening screen just fine (where you can pick "Play" "Options" etc.) But when i click play it gives me an error that it cant find a cd drive on my computer...because i use a netbook. why this is happening since i have it mounted. Also i am trying to use PlayOnLinux, since ive heard it is good at auto fixing problems that youd have to manually fix thru Wine, and id like to be able to run Morrowind thru that if possible.
When i go onto funorb and click the game i want nothing happens. I'm guessing it's a Java thing but I've downloaded JavaCC and Java SUN and neither of them work.
