OpenSUSE :: Processes Remaining Behind After A X-Session Ends

Nov 29, 2010

After running Thunderbird, or other X applications between my server and my workstation, processes, notably dbus, remain behind on the server. Over time, they pile up, response becomes so poor I must restart the server to sweep them away. How can this be avoided or better dealt with than an occasionala reboot of the server, clearly not an optimal solution.

Ubuntu :: Video Name Ends With .mp4.dap - How To Retain The Format

Jun 3, 2011

I have a couple of videos that end with the extension: .mp4.dap the videos, apparently, were .mp4 but instead are not .mp4.dap where .dap are DarkAdapted Presets File. arkAdapted is a software which applies a red or green filter to the screen to help your eyes get dark adapted.

I thought that Linux in general & Ubuntu in particular allows changing the video format by simply changing the extension name, but this doesn't seem to work now; i recall it once worked sometime ago. Am I mistaken or what ?

Ubuntu Servers :: Partition Ends At Total Number Of Cylinders + 1?

Jul 28, 2011

I made a fresh ubuntu server installation with two of the same hard disk drives in RAID1 mode. When the installation finished, I had some errors in random times rendering the system unresponsibleCode:end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector <Number>From the above error, it looks like there was a problem with disk sda so I decided to change it with another same disk and rebuild the RAID1.

When I put the new hard disk on it, created a raid partition of the maximum allowed size and tried to add it to the raid array (after having removed the previous disk) I got an error saying that the new partition is not large enough to join this existing RAID1 array! Then an "fdisk -l" command shown something weird...The existing working hard disk in the RAID shows that it has 38913 cylinders but the partition starts at 1 and ends at 38913+1=38914!!How is this possible? When I create a partition myself I am not allowed to put numbers larger than the total number of cylinders!

Code:
# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes

Programming :: Hashing The Components Of An Tcp Session To Assign/locate The Session In A Hash Table Bucket?

Nov 10, 2010

I have a very bad attempt at hashing the components of an tcp session to assign/locate the session in a hash table bucket. I am pretty sure that it has a very high collision rate and when there are a very large number of tcp sessions my application is having to search a long linked list to find the session within the bucket.

All the hashing functions I have found take a single string input where I need to input several integers and hash them into a single result. My guess is that any real hashing function is going to produce better results than what I am currently doing.

Programming :: Process Abruptly Ends Without Any Error Or Dump?

Apr 21, 2010

I have a process which runs for a while and then due to some unknown reason ends abruptly without giving a core. I tried looking in the logs and after watching for a pattern am still not 100% sure of the reason. So I was wondering if there is a way to catch the signal which ends the process and print some values in the handler function. I have called the handler for SIGTERM and SIGABRT functions but none of these are getting triggered. I looked online and did not find any other option. Can you please suggest if tehre is any other signal that can be caught for this unknown abrupt termination.

Slackware :: KGet In XFCE4 - StartX Command Ends Up

Jan 31, 2011

Kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU/Linux (Slackware 12.0)
xfce 4.4
Qt 3.3.8
KDE 3.5.7
KGet v. 0.8.5

I've just installed all of the packages in disks 1 and 2 of the slack 12.0 distro so, among them, I have the slack series kde/ installed. I run xfce as the desktop environment, which is able to run KDE apps. In main menu>Network there is kget, a download manager and also supposedly a p2p client. I ran it and it said "It is the 1st time you run kget. Do you want to make the default download manager?". I replied "No". As nothing happened I restarted X (the startx command ends up running xfce), ran kget again, and it made the same question, which this time I answered in the affirmative.

Again nothing happened. So I tried to download some file from the web, in the hope that a kget window would open. But no window opened nor anything else happened! In the console, I did 'ps -e' and there it was, however. So I began the search for documentation. First I ran khelpcenter, and was presented with the kget help. It was all about menus. However, typing kget --help-all in a console, gives almost two screens of information. And I tried several commands, from the GUI, following the syntax displayed by this command, but it was no use. So, I finally had to fall back on LQ, like so many times.

Fedora :: Annoying Beep When Typing Break Ends On F12 / 13 - Turn This Off?

Sep 1, 2010

I have the typing break enabled through the keyboard preferences, and when the break ends, I hear an alarm beep (sounds like the alarm on a wristwatch) through my speakers.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to turn this off.

It did not always do this, but started when I upgraded my system to Fedora 12, and it persisted through to the upgrade to F13.

There are three computers in my office running F13, and mine is the only one that does this. I can find no trace online of anyone else having this problem.

Can anyone tell me how to turn this off?

I'm running Gnome 2.30.0 on Fedora 13 (x86_64)

CentOS 5 :: Writing 2nd Session Of Multi-session DVD?

Jan 22, 2010

I am putting together some new systems for my customer and I'm having some trouble with a script that we use to back up files to a DVD R. The problem is that I can't write a 2nd session to the DVD unless I eject the disk and reload it. The drives are slimline type drives, Sony BD-5730S and Teac DV-W28S-V93, so they won't reload without human intervention. Opsys is CentOS 5.4 or RHEL 5.4. I've tried both AMD and Intel based mother boards. If i try this on Fedora 11 or 12 it works fine. This works on IDE attached drives but not a SATA attached drives. Fedora appears to use something called genisoimage instead of mkisofs. I can't get genisoimage to run on CentOS or RHEL.

Here's the code to setup the test files:

rm -f /tmp/BDtest/*
mkdir /tmp/BDtest
dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/BDtest/blank.iso bs=10M count=1
for NUM in {1..160}

Software :: Xfce + Kdesu Konsole + Tab Completion Ends Up With High CPU Usage By Dbus?

Jun 18, 2010

With Slackware 13.1 I decided to switch to Xfce, but as I like Konsole I'm using it under Xfce. I like to have Konsole being fired up with root privileges, so I added Launcher to Xfce panel with command as follows:

Code:

kdesu -c "konsole -e /bin/bash -l"

Now, when I open the Konsole with this Launcher everything is fine, I can run commands as the root user. But if I try to use tab completion in bash, the CPU usage suddenly goes very high. I found that the process causing this problem is:

Code:

dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session

and it is owned by root. When I kill this process the CPU usage gets normal, but I'm not able to run Konsole with the Launcher any more. The only way to get it back is to kill all the kdesu (owned by me) and dbus processes (owned by root). I also noticed that normal user (that is me using Xfce) has also exactly the same dbus process running, that is

Code:

dbus-daemon --fork --print-pid 5 --print-address 7 --session

BTW, this doesn't happen when I run xterm or Termianl. Also, using

Code:

kdesu dbus-launch konsole

gives the same odd effect. So I'd like to ask how can I solve this problem? I'm running Slackware 13.1 with Xfce 4.6.2 built with Robby Workman's SlackBuild [URL] with the source code modified so it runs KDE4 services (kdeinit4 and krunner) instead of KDE3 services (kdeinit and dcop). I have also my own custom kernel, but I think it's not relevant in any way.

Ubuntu Servers :: Restrict User Session Numbers And Allow Resuming Previous User Session?

Jun 30, 2010

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).

Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.

I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Open ConsoleKit Session: Unable To Open Session

Apr 11, 2010

The following message comes up when I boot up: Logging in user Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 0. When I press OK, the system completes the start up and everything looks normal. But when I try to connect to internet, I get the following message:

KNetworkManager cannot start because the installation is misconfigured. System DBUS policy does not allow it to provide user settings; contact your system administrator or distribution. KNetworkManager will not start automatically in future. If I reboot the system, I logg in successfully. So far the problem has appeared approximately upon every second time I boot up. Rebooting the system seems to take care of it.

Don't know what info is of interest. I'm using

Opensuse 11.2
KDE 4.4.2 (Factory)
After upgrade from 4.4.1 to 4.4.2 it worked fine for a week or so.

General :: PCLinux 2009 Booting Ends At "localhost Login:" When Connected To A 2nd PC?

Jul 3, 2011

I have a serial ATA hard drive which was installed into a external enclosure and several Linux installed from 2008-09 when connected by eSATA to a 06 Gateway. I then removed that drive and connected it in a different computer to test that PC due to a hard drive failure. So then at the grub boot menu I did select PCLinux 2009 which then ends at "localhost login:".

This 2nd PC is a 2008 ZT 7263Xi-40 and has fairly different type of hardware components which is likely why the run level 5 or graphical login did not complete. Is localhost login: the run level 3 text mode type login then ? But when I did try to enter my user name and wait for a password request, it failed to login in, ( it said login timeout expired ), and some times when I type my user then hit enter, then it does not ask for my password, just times out.
