Ubuntu Security :: External Hard Drive Permission Denied?

I have an external hard drive that has all of my Apple Powerbook G4 files on it. I plugged in my "Journal Extended" external hard drive into my new HP laptop with Ubuntu 10.10 on it.
All of my files are on the hard drive still, however lots of them have a little X on the folders and when I try to open them it tells me I don't have permission? How can I force the permission for everything on my external? It's my own files and I can't even access them lol.

I have recently bought a new laptop, installed my first linux OS on it (Ubuntu 9.10) and an external hard drive with 500GB on it for backup. For the first few days my external hard drive was working fine, but then eventually it wouldn't let me copy/move/delete stuff to and from it. So I kept trying to change the permissions but it wouldn't let me.
I figured this would be a very very common problem, so I looked up some forums to try out the methods but they didn't work. So I thought I would ask you guys for help because I am pleased with the support. I wouldn't think this would be a hard problem to solve.

I'm getting Permission denied even though I'm putting sudo in front of the command but, instead of asking me for a pass word it just says Permission denied "then" it askes for a pass. I enter the pass and it just takes me to the

prompt. I enter the command a second time and it says Permission denied again.

I have a cron backup scheme in which I rsync, then tar, then copy files on my internal hard drives to an external (USB) drive. When it works, it works. But I often get a "Permission Denied" message for all of these tasks. how the external drive is auto-mounted so I edited the etc/fstab so that the owner of the cron job is also the owner of the external drive (I think. Unfortunately, I'm not at that machine right now (it's at work), I can't give the exact fstab line (I will post it as an update to this thread next time I am at the machine).) BUT, I still get times when the cron backup runs fine and other times I get the Permission Denied. This is a shared machine that is dual-booted, so what I *think* is going on is that when the machine is rebooted to Fedora, but nobody logs in, I get a Permission Denied for the cron backup. It seems like on days when someone has logged in as the main user and left without logging out that the cron backup runs fine.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 beta yesterday and most of it is working very well. However, I ran into a problem with permissions today.I have a HDD containing my home folder and a HDD containing my data folder. The HDD with the data folder is mounted on /media/data/data_1.

I made sure I had set a+x rights on the file, tried executing it as root but the permission error stayed.When I copy that same file to my Desktop folder I can perfectly execute it.When it's located on the other hard drive I can't. I tried several command line scripts and they all work when I execute them from my OS hard drive,but not from another hard drive.

I've encountered a very frustrating problem. I have both my desktop and my laptop computer installed with Ubuntu 10.10 recently. And I use a external hard drive formatted in EXT3 as a backup. I created the EXT3 partition on my external hard drive using my laptop, but I cannot access those files using my desktop. What's going on? If one day I lost my laptop, does it mean even if I have backup, I can never access without my laptop??? How can I solve this problem?

I have a computer with Ubuntu 10.04, with few disk space. For downloading some torrents, I've connected a USB hardrive, ext4 formated. But this idea wasn't a solution, because the drive keeps getting read-only permission... Is there any way of prevent this to happen?

I have 2 ubuntu's: 1 on my ineternal hard drive, 1 on my external
When I startup without my ext drive =>GRUB error 21.
And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...
I'd like to be able to startup without external hard drive and make the ubuntu on my internal drve the standard.

I have an OpenBSD and a FreeBSD system and a mac. I also have a Ubuntu server. What i would like to do is back up all these systems to an external hard-drive using rsync when the external usb disk is connected to my Ubuntu box.If i format the external usb disk with cfdisk and the create a non-bootable ext3 file system on this external disk and create and put all the necessary public keys on the Linux box then from the BSD's or the mac issue the command:

I should store each OS just in a separate disk file of the external usb drive each time right?? Because i would rather not have to format the external usb drive for each different OS. I've been running Linux for a year on our family computers (one desktop, one laptop and two netbooks). I've run into a problem with the encrypted ext4 partition (270GB) on a LaCie external hard drive which also has a NTFS partition (50GB) which is not encrypted . First two times I tried using the encrypted ext4 partition (from two different computers) it worked fine but now I can't access it at all. I can still access the NTFS partition.Encrypted external hard drive partition will unlock but won't mount (or unmount). The computer says "Opening 320GB Hard Disk" but after a minute says, "Unable to mount location. DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply"Disk utility (GUI for gparted I believe) states that the encrypted partition (/dev/sdb1) is unlocked and the underlying partition (/dev/dm-0) is not mounted but it has a "busy circle sign" on it that will not turn off. The NTFS partition on the same drive mounts and accesses normally.
But if I try to unmount the NTFS partition, it says: "Unable to stop drive. One or more partitions are busy on /dev/sdb"If I try to shut down the computer, it is unable to shut down because (I assume) it can't shut down that drive either. So I have to just turn off the computer.fdisk states that /dev/dm-0 doesn't have a valid partition table [full output attached]fsck suggests: "Filesystem mounted or opened exclusively by another program?"ps axuf shows some processes running on /dev/dm-0 but killinghem doesn't release the drive either. [full output attached]I checked /etc/blkid.tab (suggested in one vaguely related thread) and there's no actual file only a broken link pointing to /dev/.blkid.tab (which doesn't exist). I tried deleting this link and rebooting but that didn't change anything.when I finally gave up my data as lost, I tried to format the partition (using Disk Utility) and it refused saying, "One or more block devices are holding /dev/sdb"

I have a dual boot Dell Studio laptop with Windows (VISTA) and Ubuntu (9.0.4) installed on it. I have recently installed Ubuntu to make it a dual boot. Before that I was using LiveUSB Ubuntu image for six months (without any problems).
During the installation of Ubuntu, I created a Linux partition of 2GB for Ubuntu installation (assuming that it was running successfully on my 2GB USB drive). All of my other work (e.g. documents/programming projects etc.) are stored on the Windows partition (which is loaded during the boot time automatically). The problem is that I get a "permission denied" error while running any executable file on the Windows partition. But if I copy the same executable on the Linux partition, everything works perfect. Am I missing something here?
I have verified that the executable have necessary execute permissions.

I have, say, 10 machines, connected via NFS and NIS. There's a server which exports the /home using NFS, and exports the user names using NIS. All machines are working fine. I am able to ssh to the machines remotely and get my work done.Recently though, one of the machines (say M, for easy reference) would not allow any other machine on the NFS network [or outside the NFS network] to ssh into it. Every time an ssh attempt is made, 3 IP addresses [including the machine from which an ssh attempt was being made] are added to the /etc/hosts.deny file on M, and the error message on the other machine shows 'permission denied' after the password is entered. I tried using various options that ssh provides, but I cannot figure it out. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling openssh-client and openssh-server on M, but it didn't change anything.
Another point to note is this: another user made use of M before, for a while, by disabling ssh passwords - so he could access M without having to enter his ssh password. That individual can still log in to M. All others who require to enter a password cannot ssh into M.

nfs mounted directory which is mounted rw. I and everyone else are members of a common group. We all have write permissions in the tree: All files and directories in the tree are in the common group. All directories are set to 775 and all files are set to 664 or 775, as appropriate.If a file is owned by someone else, even though the file and the directory are group writable, I get permission denied when I try to chmod the file.

I have trouble with rsa authentication:
I did create an rsa certificate with ssh-keygen using my root account on a client: ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 2048 no passphrase I did copy the rsa pub_key from my client to the server scp id_rsa sampleuser@sampleserver:/home/sampleuser/.ssh/authorized_keys
I did change the ownership to the "sampleuser" of the pub key file on the server: I trayd to connect:
ssh sampleuser@sapleserver
I get that: permission denied (public key)... I know I do smth wrong but I don't know what.

This is weird, today I updated my system and while trying to visudo from single user mode got
"cannot read /etc/shadow: Permission denied"
which kept me from doing anything until I switched to file permissions of 400 on shadow, then back. Is this being experienced by anyone else or just me? /etc/security/limits.conf doesn't seem like it wants to change in enforcing mode either and I can't find any alerts to provide clues on the situation.

I have a CGI script that when called runs another script as a different user. Yet when the script does run I keep getting a permission denied in the logs and the script fails

For the full question-
When looking at /etc/sudoers there is the defaults line that you can add things to. When doing a sudo -L so that I can see what I can put on that defaults line. Can an individual user have specific defaults? Ones that don't effect the rest of the people in /etc/sudoers?

I am trying to wade through the semanage jungle to get permissions for a tftp client. I followed the HowTos [URL] but I get the following at the client:
tftp> status
Connected to 192.168.1.101.
Mode: netascii Verbose: off Tracing: off
Rexmt-interval: 5 seconds, Max-timeout: 25 seconds
tftp> get hello.o4
tftp: hello.o4: Permission denied
I finally figured out that the firewall directives shown at the end of the HowTo refer to semanage although the options are stated incorrectly according to the man page for semanage. I did insure that the file hello.o4 in /tftpboot has read permission for everybody.

The above is the error message I get when I try to create an usb-flash boot drive. I downloaded the iso for Mint10 and use the "create startup disk" program to create the boot drive. I can see both the iso and the flash drive within the program, but when I click on "create disk" I get the above error message?

I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue.
