I use Ubuntu 9.04 exclusively on my own machines, but I have a couple of flash drives that got infected by some corrupt windows executable (*.exe) files, probably by somebody's trojan (they are Cruzer 4GB so came with installed fancy programs that I dont need but didnt remove and Windows keeps installing unwanted ini files and other trash every time I use them in somebody elses machine or in an internet cafe). I deleted quite a few files, but some are stubborn.
$ sudo chmod +w-X doesnt seem to work. How do I unprotect and remove them? The filesystem is vFAT.
I suspect the files were created by some kind of a trojan as my work requires my flash to be pretty promiscuous.
When I 've backed up all the good files I need, I'd be happy to reformat the flash drives as straight vanilla data storage and retrieval, provided I can still use them on a variety of machines running MS windows as well as on my Linux machines. Any guidance on reformatting?
I'm trying to get Eclipse IDE running on my openSUSE 11.4 (KDE).
I have downloaded Eclipse Classic from Eclipse Classic 3.7 | Eclipse Packages. I started Dolphin and extracted the tar.gz file to a directory called eclipse. Now, as I understand, to run Eclipse, I must run the executable eclipse. But when I double-click eclipse, I get an error saying, "There is no application installed that can open files of the type executable (application/x-executable)."

According to the screenshot #1, the file eclipse has a permission set of -rw-------. The execute permission is missing on this file. So, here's what I did: (screenshot #2) Right-clicked and selected Properties and under the Permissions tab, checked the Is executable checkbox and clicked OK. But still (screenshot #3), the permission set remains the same.
Note 2: The parent directory permissions are visible in the Terminal window below in all the screenshots.
What should I do to make eclipse executable?
I'm trying to run Starcraft 2 from the installation folder I kept from my previous windows install, and when I double-click the .exe I get an error that says it doesn't have permission to run as an executable. So I checked out the properties page, permissions tab, and for some ungodly reason none of the changes I make stick. The second I click the check box for "Run as an exectuable" it unchecks. I have no idea what to do and I've scoured the net looking for an answer. I'd prefer to avoid redownloading it (didn't buy the retail version) but it's looking like my only option at this point.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I move files from Windows to Linux using a USB drive, all files are marked as executable. Then double clicking on a ".txt" file gets you the ridiculous dialog box asking whether you want to display the file or execute it. (NOTE: The /etc/fstab entry for the USB mount includes the "noexec" option already and it hasn't helped.) Now that my wife and daughters are moving files back and forth between the two OSs, I'm getting pestered for a solution to this and I haven't been able to track anything down. Yet.
What can one do -- presumably on the Windows side of the transfer -- to prevent these files from being marked executable? Or is it a hopeless problem caused by some dainbread decision made by a Windows developer?
I am accessing network drive (Z:stream) on windows. Now the permission set on stream folder is like chmod -R 777 streams/ means all the files inside stream is at 777 but now i am copying some files from windows to this streams folder but permission on those files are not 777 ,i would like to have permission 777 on those files that copied from windows ...how do i do that??

Maybe this question also applies for Linux mounting a Windows network share.
Quite a few times i have boot puppy linux live and have tried to copy file from the underlying NTFS windows HD only to get an error like permission denied when i try and copy a file to say a USB stick, i think some files copy but i seem to get permission errors with some files.

I have Vortexbox (fedora distro) installed on a laptop which I am using as a media server. I would have issues where I thought the laptop would go to sleep and disconnect itself from the internet. The computer boots in command line mode and what I would notice is that the screen would go blank and then I would have to go to the computer and jiggle the trackpad and it would wake up. I posted about it and got responses related to the gnome desktop which I could not find the files referred to in the answer.
I tried using setterm to keep the computer awake setting blank to 0 and powersave off. The same thing happens even with the monitor on and the screen display on. A gesture on the trackpad seems to wake the ethernet back up. Here's my old post: [URL]. Everything else about this situation is perfect. Vortexbox is easy to set up and it does everything I want, DLNA, streams to my squeezeboxes, etc, but this ethernet cutting out is exasperating.

I hope this post stands in the right section.I have a commandline i need to enter in terminal when i want to run a program. i tought lets put that piece of command in an .sh file and just click the file to run the program (then i dont need to open terminal first an give in the command) however the .sh file does not open the program. so i propably need to make a executable (application/x-executable).

I have Wine installed, but I can not open the file as it is blocked from executing with a window popping up telling me that this file was blocked due to security reasons. I go into the files properties and try to change the permission but that does not help. Is there a way to get around this? Possibly in the terminal as root?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my Laptop is an 80 GB HD. I installed Windows XP first (at this point it worked perfectly) then installed on the same HD, but on other partitions Archlinux.
The whole thing looks like this now:
/dev/sda1 <--- Windows xp
/dev/sda2 <--- arch linux (/, etc, etc^^)
/dev/sda3 <--- homes
/dev/sda4 <--- boot partition (grub)
(I got no SWAP partition, I got 4gb RAM (well can only use 3, since my system doesn't support 64bit), and my friend told me there's no absolute need for a a swap :>)
Arch Linux is booting perfectly (and very fast), but Windows XP doesn't want to boot anymore :>
(Just if it's from any importance: In the partition program I took the "bootable" flag away from my XP Partition and set it to sda4 - I thought I need to do that, but now I'm not so sure anymore :P )
My entry in the file /boot/grub/menu.lst looks like this (I also tried various others)

When I boot and choose the Windows XP in the GRUB boot menu, the following message appears:
error 13: invalid or unsupported executable format
When I set root(hd0,1) to root(hd0,0) (what seemed the most logical to me) and boot again selecting the windows xp, then the GRUB cosole appears.
So what did I do wrong - or better said: what should I do now?
It seems all .exe files work from my /home folder, however as this didn't have enough space I installed a game(World of Warcraft) onto one of the file systems in /media folder. The game worked perfectly when I played it on Linux Mint 9 but when I upgraded to Linux mint 11 it wasn't marked as executable. When I attempt to change the permissions from properties to "allow executing file as program", it instantly deselects the box and double clicking has no effect. I've tried the "chmod +x" command from the terminal and that has no effect either. I can't move the file to my "/home" folder as it's too large.

I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I have NDISWRAPPER installed on my laptop, but when I try to install the download file which is a Windows Xp dos executable file of 8mbs I have tried every thing but without success I can see my Iomega 250 Zip drive when I go into system>administration>disk utilities and acess properties but cannot make it run,

What are the possible problem when Windows access the file from Ubuntu got Read Only even though have a full permission to read, write and execute the file? Ubuntu to Ubuntu accessing the file there is no problem only Windows got a problem.

hda1 - windows ntfs (just for use with windows)
hda2 - / ext3
hda3 - swap
hda4 - /home ext3
hda5 - /windows fat32 (shared partition between linux and windows)
Now, I have access to /windows but it's owned by root so I can't create/modify anything and I can't unmount it to use chown.
I'm running openSUSE 11.4 (gnome) and I'm trying to transfer files to my windows partition and it says that I don't have the permission to do so. How do I gain access to it?

I have followed that many post about using a Windows mount, and still have an issue.
Using Ubuntu 8.04 to mount a shared on a Windows 2003 Server.
I have the fstab method with this line:
//server/xms /mnt/xms cifs defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,credentials=/root/.smbcredentials 0 0
or
//server/xms /mnt/xms cifs credentials=/root/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_ mode=0777 0 0
Both work when doing a mount /mnt/xms command. I can ls the directory on the windows share. I can cat files from the windows share.
If I touch or mkdir in the windows share I get "Permission denied"
I have a written a java code to ftp a file from the windows box to unix box. It keeps giving me the following error : "java.io.FileNotFoundException: PORT 204,63,56,5,16,78: 550 Permission denied." I am able to ftp manually from windows to unix.

I cannot figure out how to "install" a program I downloaded. It comes in Windows, Mac, and Linux flavors, and I did acquire the Linux version, which comes in a ZIP file. After I unzip it and cd to the directory it is in, I had an earlier version working a few months ago, but cannot recall how I made it work back then.
