Debian Installation :: ISO Image Disk Does Not Function

I've been trying to load Debian with no success. Let me describe the issue:
1. I downloaded the iso image from the Debian pages. The md5sums match.
2. I changed the boot priority so the CDROM is accessed first.
3. Performed a cold boot and see a black screen that says Checking media [Fail]. I see this three times (HD is 4th on priority list) and then Mint loads.
Here is the odd part:
4. I can successfully load Arch from the cd/dvd drive.
5. I can also load Mint form the cd/dvd drive.
6. Cannot load Crunchbang from cd/dvd drive - same as when I try Debian.
I don't know how to proceed from here. I did erase my log files and performed another cold boot with Debian in hopes I might find some sort of error in them, but I really don't know what I am looking for. I saved the log files ....

I've installed Debian 5.0.7 on a partition of my hard-disk. Before I was using Slackware, so now I have in sda1 slack 13.0 and in sda2 debian 5.The problem is that Lilo can't find the ram disk image. I tried to insert in lilo.conf file the line "initrd=/deb5/initrd.img", but it doesn't work. I tried also to create from the installation cd an initramfs file and to make the link "/deb5/initrd.img" point to it.I've used the "lilo -v" command from slackware, so in / was /dev/sda1 with slackware 13 and in /deb5 was mounted /dev/sda2 with debian 5.

I tried to access files from my old hard drive that used to be in a Mac (which unfortunately isn't working anymore). I connected it to my computer which I am running debian gnome on. So my question is how do i access a mac os extended disk image. The disk is encrypted and when i try to open it it says that i don't have permission. I think its encrypted in AES 128 bit.

How can i get a RAID virtual image disk?
What i need is to mount several directories from any other partiton (or file system) as a new merge file system that can grow or decrease depending on the free space. As if it was a dinamic RAID,so i can work with huge files distributed over the partitions mounted.
Ejemp: /mnt/sda1/dir_raid1 + /home/dir_raid2 + /mnt/sda3/dir_raid3 ---> /mnt/RAID/
mhddfs and unionfs <---- are not the solution im searching (cant use huge files)

I'm trying to install debian-6.0.2.1 from hard diskand it can't find my iso image wich is on the slackware partition.i downloaded initrd.gz an vmlinuz,added some lines to lilo.conf so that i can boot but then when it searches for the iso image doesn't find it .

I need to make a disk image of Jaunty. Something like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost in the Windows contingence. I have tried Remastersys and Ghost 4 Linux. The former simply created an ISO file, which is 1/10th of the size of my hard drive and I do not know how to restore my computer using the ISO. The latter seems to be stuck at 0% even after leaving my PC on for 4 hours and verifying that all the settings are correct.

Wishing that one day Linux would be so easy and complete as Windows. But we are gaining more users, so Linux will have more apps

I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 WS on my PC but it did not see any disks to install on. I believe this is because my drives are all configured as RAID. My mobo is an Asus M3A78-EMH HDMI AM2+ socket with an Athlon 2X 5000+ CPU. The chipset is AMD 780G. I have the BIOS configured for RAID drives and I already run Win XP x32 and Win 7 x64 on it. My boot drive is configured as 'RAID READY' and I have 2 RAID 1 disks consisting of pairs of SATA drives.
From what I have researched it seems that with some tuning it should be possible to install Ubuntu 10.04 but I have little Linux experience and don't want to mess up my existing drives. I have installed Linux before a few times and run it but never with RAID. Is anyone aware of an existing disk image that I will be able to install from on my system or would it be possible for someone to create one for me to use?

this is in the wrong section, but I wasn't sure where to put it. Since the background to my problem is kind of long winded I've split this post into two sections: Short version of problem
I have a PC that has two internal drives: one drive (drive A) is empty, and the other (drive B) has a copy of windows vista installed. At the moment the PC boots from drive A. I'd like to transfer everything from drive A to drive B, so that this new disk will boot and behave nicely and windows will still function.
Is there any easy way to do this in ubuntu? I'm guessing I can use something like dd, but will this copy the boot sector and will I have to mess around with the partition table? Long version of the problem
Today I built a new PC for my dad with two internal drives. He was previously using vista on a laptop which died a few days ago, and I'd like to install vista on one disk of the new PC, and ubuntu on the other disk.
He has a licensed copy of Vista for his laptop, but it came as a "system restore" disk, and so I can't install vista directly onto the new PC. I have an identical laptop to his, so I took out the drive from his laptop, put it in my laptop, and did a "system restore" from the disk that came with the laptop. I then took out the drive from my laptop, and put this inside the new PC. It boots up fine, and I installed all the necessary drivers and etc to make windows work.
Now instead of using a slow/small laptop drive inside the new PC, I'd like to be able to clone the data on laptop disk and this onto one of the bigger/faster internal drives of the new PC. How can I do this from ubuntu, so that the new drive will boot windows?
I'm fairly certain it can be done using dd, but how do I make sure the information in the boot sector (or partition table) is correct for the new drive? I'm asking this because when I put my laptop drive into the new PC initially, I had connected it as an external drive, and when I tried booting from this there was an error, something like "Invalid partition table" (I think). I figured that when I did a "system restore" on my laptop, the drive was the only drive available, so this would be HDA, or SDA in the boot record of that disk. But when I added it to a system where other drives were available, it was no longer at that same location, so the boot loader couldn't find the data it was looking for to load the system.

I'm a Linux newbie and are trying to install F13 from bootable USB onto the HD of a DELL mini netbook. I've followed the install wizard's defaults including the "Use All Space option." The install errors out at about 20% of progress during the "Copying live image to hard drive" process. The error dialog is as followed:"There was an error installing the live image to your hard drive. This could be due to bad media. Please verify your installation media..." and it comes with options to Exit installer or Retry. I have since retried and restarted several times and still came to the same error. FYI, I've initially attempted to install F13 to the HD over an existing Windows XP.

I am having trouble both installing or even just booting the live CD. I have to interrupt the boot to give the nomodeset boot option.
Once I get the Ubuntu splash with the oscillating red and white dots for several moments, I get the Busybox with the error message "Unable to find a medium containing a live file system"
If I do a dmesg I then see a lot of sr0 errors. I have an onboard SCSI controller but no scsi devices. I am not sure if this matters.

I need little help on live disk creation and disk image backup.
Can I create live disk using my hard drive installation? If yes then, can I restore the fedora from the live disk to the hard drive. I mean to say that from that live disk can I install fedora again in my hard drive.
Second question is, if I create the disk image of my hard drive( including ntfs & FAT32 partition) , can I restore it in a blank drive. If so , then can os will be restored also?

I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.
I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.
I will update the topic later..
My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.

After installation of debian, using the squeeze net-installer, on a HP elitebook 6930P, i get the following error. "non-system disk or disk error"
It is right after boot process, and just when it should load grub. Grub is installed in the MBR. Windows7, is installed as well, and is not an option to remove. (Should not be the problem though).
/ is set with the bootable flag.
The installation went without any issues, and I have actually tried to install twice with the exact same thing.

I have a simple fileserver built of my good old ASUS TX97 with K6-III 400 MHz. It boots the latest debian stable from a PATA 1G IDE flashdisk. For almost 3 years I have hooked on a SATA Samsung HD502JI 500G harddisk onto a VIA VT6421 based SATA Controller, which work real fine. Since I ran out of diskspace I bought a Samsung HD204UI 2T drive, hung it on the second SATA port, and it took about 8 hours to copy the 500G data from the old disk to the new one. All seems fine this far. However, if I stream a movie from the 2T drive, the movie freezes every now and then, and Dmesg get spammed with errors. The 500G disk still works fine.Of course the VIA SATA is just SATA 1.0 (1.5Gbit/s), but I thought all harddisks are backwards compatible. Since the 2T drive is recognized, the serial line-protocol is fine I suppose. I have also flashed the latest F4EG firmware to the HD204UI succesfully.

Greetings from Greece. I tried to install opensuse 11.3 in an empty disk . Unfortunately the installation progress stops in 88% and the message error says "error copy live image to the disk". I have burn two different cd but the result is always the same.Is it a hardware problem or the cd is not correct?I had the 11.2 version in the same pc without any problem for a long time.

I have installed Debian maybe 30 times over the years since about 2003, stable, testing and Sid on two different desktops and two different laptops. The only problem I have ever had is sometimes with a flaky daily build. It is one of my favorite distros.
BUT, I am totally frustrated is trying to install to a USB. I have followed the manual step by step about 6 times in the past two weeks. The result is always the same. The installation fails to find an installation iso image. Yes, I know the iso image and the hd-media vmlinuz and initrd.gz files are supposed to be the same version.

The USB boots to a Language selection screen and proceeds through the Keyboard selection screen with no problems.
The next step which searches for an installation iso image fails.
Skipping that step and trying to load installer components from iso image also fails.
Searching the entire PC for an installation iso image also fails. (I even copied the netinst iso image to the HD root directory.)

I got my parts and am looking to build it tomorrow, however I don't have an OS with me to test it. This is mostly for college, multimedia stuff, so I'm obviously going need Windows on it. I'm leaning towards Debian or a Debian derivative like Ubuntu, I used that back when it was trendy and found it pretty good, but I hear Debians the same but better.
I want to get Linux on it at some stage - is it easy to install Linux on the machine first then windows, or do I have to do it the other way around? I've never installed Linux FIRST. I want to assign a particularly partition to it and keep the free space for when I install Windoze on it.
How big is the basic Debian install and where's the best place to download it? I have a shitty connection here so I can't really download a DVD image.

I have a Canon iR3570/iR4570 PXL, and installed the driver CQue 1.0 TCP/IP Queue from Canon webpage.
The problem:
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with an image and text, the image is not printed (the space is blank).
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Calc with just an image, it's printed great.
- if i try to print an OpenOffice or LibreOffice Impress, the images are not printed but the text is printed great.

I down loaded Debian 5.0.4 and burned it to CD (several times I might add till it was right) and now the computer I'm putting it on wont acknowledge it as a boot disk and load. It does not have a problem with my windows cd, which has a crack and the start of all my problems, But not the Debian CD-1 disk. what now? The computer is an IBM thinkpad a22p. Everything works as far as I can tell. But I was going to reinstall Windows and failed in that because of a small crack on the edge of the disk that stopped the install and any hope of accessing the file on the laptop. Microsoft does not support windows xp any longer, you must buy windows 7, but the ibm will not run it due to processor speed and ram limitations. But it will run linux and I'm willing to try it just to get out of microsoft control.
Idon't know what else to do. This is the link to where I downloaded the software ( [URL] ). The others five that i downloaded were on the same page that I got this one. Are there bad files here? Is there a missing file in the disc?

I just would like to create am iso image of some dvds I have. I thought it would be best to use dd command, see sample below;
admin@unixbox:$ ls -l /dev/dvd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2011-05-29 21:53 /dev/dvd -> sr0
dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/home/videos/dvd.iso bs=2048 conv=sync,notrunc
however i get an error message "No such file or directory" and I am not sure of the reason why.... Can anyone assist me to understand why?

does someone know a workaround to solve this problem?[URL].. I'm trying to download all firmware on [URL]..I put them on usb key (they are about 12 files .deb) and, during the installation I choose "select driver from alternative" (or something like that) but never recognize it.Seems this card works with tg3 driver but i'm not sure.If there are no way to recognize it from installer, could someone please suggest me an alternative way to install testing on my notebook ?

I have an old Dell Dimension L933r and would like to boost it with Debian. I wonder if that is possible in your opinion. It right now runs on Windows ME. The computer is 9 or 10 years old. I bought it years ago but have not been using it for the past couple of years. I don't know the specs of this computer unfortunately. I don't know whether it's 32 or 64 bits or what's its architecture. Can you help me locate the right iso image for this hardware? I want to install Squeeze if it's possible.
