Jun 8, 2011I notice that by default there is only 4 workspaces available on Natty Narwhal. Can I get more as I could with 10.10?

I believe these are bugs or omissions.
When using the Workspace switcher you can no longer drag an application from one screen (workspace) to another. I like to use 8 different screens to avoid clutter.
You also were allowed on the Preferences menu to change the default name of the workspace from "workspace 1" to just "1".
Before Maverick you could hover the mouse over a workspace and the name would appear. Now the only things that appears is workspace 1 without regard for whatever workspace you are on.
To me an omission of a necessary or important feature is a Bug. If this was done by design than it is a design bug.
I'm pretty sure I saw this described on this board, with a screenshot, but I simply can't find anything about it: A window switcher (probably a compiz plugin) that displays a 3D view of all windows lying flat on a receding surface, with the selected one flipping up upright.
I assumed it was built in to compiz, but when I went to look it was not any one of the ones I can find in ccsm - must be a separate package. And by then I had closed the post.
Does something like this exist?[URL]..I don't like much the default alt+tab application switcher. I would like to delete the bottom panel and leave only the upper menu. I would like an alt+tab app switcher similar to that one, icons instead preview of windows plus icons, and when there are windows group show them in the arrow. Then colors, for example blue for the window where you are and yellow if the window wants to highlight due a change or something.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been using Natty(unity as desktop) since the beta now and it is really growing on me except for the workspaces. Is there a way to see what workspace I am on? *When typing I usually switch with ctrl-alt-"left/right/up/down" but after some work i don't always know what desktop i am one so switching is usually trial and error jumping from desktop to desktop or pressing super-s to get an overview. Seeing which desktop I'm on (maybe in the unity workspace button) would help with that.
*When just using the mouse I used to click on the workspace launcher and I would be on the desktop of my choice in one click but now I need to click on the switcher, identify where I am and where I need to go and it breaks the flow of fast switching, its no advantage anymore compared to just opening all programs on 1 workspace and using super-w I guess there are upcoming changes on the switcher as unity is still in its infancy so is there a way to put the old switcher in the top panel again?
I recently fixed a problem i had with Ubuntu which was the missing title bars but as soon as i enabled them on Compiz, my Desktop switcher app will not work. I've tried removing it and re-applying it but this does not solve the problem. Its there, in all its glory, but i cant click any of the other desktops it seems unresponsive when im left-clicking it but it responds and works fine showing blips of what it is or even adding or deleting rows and columns is optional.I know this happened immediatly following the compiz change so it has something to do with that and i think it might only have 1 desktop that it knows of because i can highlight desktop 4 and it still says 1, but im probably wrong.

Anyone got any idea as to why? MY search skills appear to be sadly lacking on this one. Tried removing the configs and starting again - no difference.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using the Shift Switcher on Compiz to switch windows. Also i don't use any taskbar to show what apps are open or not. Minimized windows are simply "invisible" as it were. When switching, minimized windows are represented by their icons. Instead i would like to see them as a thumbnail (as with maximized windows). Can i make Compiz do that?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been tweeking my gnome setup a lot lately...I have a 14 inch screen on my laptop and decided I didn't need title bars anymore....so I added a bunch new hot keys andinstead of eliminating the title bare, which kills the borders too, I changed the width to a minimum. If I use the window switcher, I can only see the window if that window is not minimized. All one can see is an icon telling you what program that window is using if that window is minimized. It looks great if the window is open on the desktop. Are there any work arounds anyone know s of or better compiz setups I could use ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on a laptop with a second monitor configured as a separate x screen.
I configured the workspace switcher applet on the laptop screen to be 2x2 and it changed appropriately. When I go to the preferences for the workspace switcher on the second screen it says it's set to two columns and two rows but still displays as the default four columns and one row and any changes made have no effect.
I changed the setting num_rows from one to two under apps/panel/applets/workspace_switcher_screen1/prefs using gconf-editor and restarted my gnome-panels but it had no effect.
Is there anyway to make the workspace switcher on the second screen display as 2x2?
I don't want to use more than one workspace. On previous versions of Ubuntu, I was able to reduce the number of workspaces to 1 and and remove the workspace switcher from the panel. I want to do this in Unity and can't find a way to. Right clicking doesn't let me remove from the launcher and I can find no way to reduce the workspaces.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed a fresh copy of 9.10. My problem is the way Workspace Switcher 2.28.0 (the default of the installation) with compiz running (I haven't tried without compiz) Old behaviour: (9.04 and 8.10) a) rolling the mouse wheel over a workspace of the workspace switcher means: move to the next or previous workspace b) click on a the representation of a window (a little square) on the the workspace switcher and then drag it to another workspace means: move window to other workspace
In 9.10 the workspace switcher does work (the number of workspace can be configured, Ctl-Alt-left & right arrow, Ctlr-Shiht-Alt-right&left arrow) but the functionality described in a and b is missing.

panels can be made transparent by clicking on preferences/background.
But for some reason there is no obvious way to change the transparency of applets. Their transparency depends on the current theme. For example with the theme "radiance" window-switcher and date are opaque. With "human-clearlooks" both are transparent.
Is there a way change the transparency without changing the theme?
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and I don't like the fact the my viewpoint is being change when I use the window switcher (ALT+TAB). I tried going to the gconf-editor and changing the /apps/compiz/plugins/staticswitcher/screen0/options/auto_change_vp value to false, restarted.. it IS set to false, the CompizConfig settings manager shows that it is false, but for some reason it is still changing the viewpoint.
I tried disabling the window switcher completely just to see that the configuration works at all.. and it did work.. so, I'm not sure what to do so the view point won't change.
I've attached 2 jpeg screenshots. Look at the center of the top panel and you'll find my Workplace Switcher. In the Ambiance screenshot, the Workplace Switcher clearly shows that Google Voice is open in the 2nd workspace because it shows that icon there. In the Custom screenshot, the Workplace Switcher shows there's a window open in the second workspace, but no icon to identify what's in the window. I've checked all available controls, and only Ambiance and Radiance correctly show icons for most open windows in the Workplace Switcher. Does anyone know how to make controls from other themes work with Workplace Switcher the way that Ambiance and Radiance do?

View 1 Replies View RelatedAny of you ever heard of OS/2 WARP? My dad is a longtime user, as was I until I got my Mac (and now my netbook with Ubuntu). In any case, the OS is a tad...obsolete and my dad at some point wishes to try Ubuntu. In his current setup, he has a "Window List" that can be activated using a keyboard shortcut. It's a popup (not in a menu bar or "panel") that can be moved around and resized. From that you can use your keyboard to navigate to the program or window that you want. For instance, if I want to get to Firefox, I press Ctrl+Escape (to activate the Window List) and then I hit "F" as many times as needed to highlight "Firefox". Then I just hit "Enter" and I'm there. Anything similar out there for Ubuntu (it is preferable if the solution has text as well as icons or else can have the icons removed leaving only the text)
In addition, both him and I would be interested in some program for launching/switching to programs using keyboard shortcuts. On the Mac, I use Quicksilver for this, where it actually Launches the program if it's not open, and switches to it if it is. However, Gnome Do unfortunately lacks this functionality and I have no way to do it off the top of my head.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just upgraded to Natty, from Maverick and I can't get 'Workspace-Switcher' to work. As a matter-of-fact, I was completely dumbfounded when Natty launched for the first time, and I was presented with 'no' menus. What I got instead was some black-screen with some very attractive icons on it; but the icons had no organization to them that I could comprehend, and the categories that were presented didn't make any sense, based on the applications that I had installed. Apparently the designers of Unity thought that it would be a good idea for me to go 'fish' for my applications. Also, the most frequently used applications that I had pinned to gnome-panel disappeared, and I couldn't even rebuild them. The 3D menu, on the left, that combined my desktop icons, with the icons that were 'formerly' pinned to gnome-panel was also very attractive; but provided me with no useful functionality, other than complete disorientation and confusion. The scrolling was also slower than poo. All-in-all a very beautiful 'boat-anchor.' This distro should probably be renamed 'Virtual-Vista.' Fortunately, when I reenabled 'Desktop-Cube' and 'Rotate-Cube' and I think some other options related to Gnome, I got my menus and icons back. What a relief!!! I'm a power-user, and I have something on the order of 100 applications loaded. I just 'can't' go looking all-over-creation to find them...
Unfortunately, Workspace-Switcher could not be activated by clicking on it, only by <ctrl-alt-left/right arrow keys>. Also, unfortunately, all the desktops displayed the same applications. Definitetly 'not' a ready for prime-time player. I assume that this is a bug? Is there a work-around for this? If so, can someone please share it with me? For now I'm stuck with a ruptured-duck that can't swim. I usually have all four desktops populated, and switch between them whenever I have to wait on an application that's busy, or I get tired. I really 'need' this functionality.
P.S., It's more than Ok with me that a distro not be released, if it's not ready. I'd certainly prefer that to 'shock-and-awe.'
I have a workspace switcher on one of my panels, and it has ten columns by one row. However, when Ubuntu first starts up, it only shows four workspaces. By screwing around with the settings, I eventually get it to show all ten, but it would be nice if I didn't have to do that. What is going on?
