Nov 11, 2015I have an issue after the installation of debian 8.2 on an usb flash drive:
I had debian 8.2 and windows 8.1 running on a single SSD. Everything was fine. I wanted to install a second debian on a 32gb USB flash drive as a live system. After the installation I am not able to boot my debian (SSD) without the flash drive plugged in. I only get a grub rescue prompt. Booting windows still works. It is also possible to boot both debian systems if the USB drive is plugged in.
So it seems to me, that the debian bootloader was accidently installed to the USB flash drive and the original bootloader on the SSD does not work properly anymore. I used a netinst image from a second USB flash drive to install debian to the first USB flash drive.

Fedora :: Adding Another OS To Bootloader?
Jul 24, 2009I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on this computer and I told it not to install a bootloader since I already have Fedora and it is my main OS. I then realized I didn't know how to add it to menu.lst here so I can't boot Ubuntu. How do I do this?

Nov 29, 2014Basically I had windows 8.1 running on my fujitsu lifebook A532 laptop and wanted to dual boot kali linux alongside it, however upon installing the linux it deleted EVERYTHING! on my laptop, the grub bootloader only showed kali linux to choose from...
I then decided kali linux is too complicated for me and decided to delete everything and reinstall windows 8 again however I was surprised that my bios screen looks diffrent also I can not edit the boot sequence.
If I press f2 or f12 it takes me to a screen with a tab named Boot menu and its written on it debian and every time I press enter on it it takes me back to this same screen...
I can not boot from cd or usb!

Aug 19, 2010I installed Debian on my PC and then installed Ubuntu. This worked fine and I could dual boot between the two. The PATA disk was /dev/hda on debian and (I think) /dev/sda on Ubuntu. I copied the entire disk to a sata disk using dd from knoppix and put the PATA one to one side. Now the Ubuntu comes up fine but when I boot debian, it complains about references to /dev/hda1, which is present in grub - root=/dev/hda1. Debian now expects sda references rather than hda references. How do I persuade Ubuntu to write /dev/sda1 to the bootloader rather than /dev/hda1 using grub-mkconfig?

Feb 16, 2010I have extracted the files from a bootable CD to /dev/sdc2/bootable/winpwrec with the hope of booting from the hard drive. I have read the grub.cfg file and a couple of guides here and I'm still not sure what I'm doing. Is there any chance someone can tell me what I need to add to the grub.cfg file to add this to the boot menu? I am pretty well-versed in computers but I'm new to Linux and I'm still trying to get acquainted with the OS, terminology, and the boot loader. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, if that matters.

Fedora Installation :: Grub2 Bootloader - Manually Adding Entry?
May 29, 2010I have a working Ubuntu install with the Grub2 bootloader. I need to manually add an entry to boot Fedora 13 off of sda. Sda1 is the boot partition, sda2 is LVM. None of the examples I've tried work. I do also have F13 grub installed on sda, but chainloading to it didn't do anything other than a blinking cursor.

and then the blinkng cursor. On one site i found something saying "you may need to activat the drive" and some command-line instructions on how to do it. However the commands have faded from memory and i am now unable to find that site again. Could anyone offer insight on how to fix this "grub error 21" or how to activate it. I run primarily debian but i have a windows partition on one of my relative's computers.

btw I'm installing on a western digital 500gb "passport" external hard drive with ext3 and swap partitions.

Mar 17, 2010I had 40 gb of unused space at the beginning of my drive, then a 15gb primary ext3 partition for /, then a 100GB ext4 primary partition for /home, then a 4 gb extended partition that contains two 2 gb swap partitions.
I installed FreeBSD on the empty space at the beginning of the drive. The slice I created did not start on the first block. There were a few MB of free space before and after it.
After the installation finished (with no errors), grub would hang on the "Grub loading/Welcome to Grub screen". I booted a squeeze CD in rescue mode and reinstalled grub to /dev/sda. After rebooting, Grub still hangs at the same place.
I booted a live CD and checked the output of fdisk. For each of my partitions, it says "Partition does not end on cylinder boundary". I am hoping that whatever happened to my disk is not recoverable. Fortunately, I backed up some essential files beforehand, but I still don't really want to lose my old squeeze system.
Right now I am fscking all partitions.

Nov 7, 2010I have a major problem installing opensuse 11.3 on my computer( hp pavilion dv6).I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-x86_64 from software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3 and made a live usb.I'm a newbie at using linux infact i never used another operating system beside windows.Now i have installed windows 7 (on c disk 100gb).My first problem when i am trying to install opensuse is that he dosn't automatic choose to make my partitions so i have to do it manualy.I was searching how to make it the best way so i desited to make 4 partitons one for ' /boot' one for ' / 'one for '/home' and a swap partition/In windows7 i made 4 new partitons
3:10 gb for /boot
4:10 gb for/
5:70 gb for /user
6:10 gb for /swap
My first question is :Is this right to make 4 paritions in windows (opensuse can't format or resize my partitions it just can edit it ) so it's my only way to make partitions( If this is wrong how can i make partitions then)
My second question is how to change the bootloader configurtation because everytime when ii try to install opensuse it stops at about 96% and it says to reconfigure the bootloader options.
If i skip this i get the folowing message

Fedora :: Get The Graphical Screen Back By Adding Vga=795 To /boot/grub/grub.conf
Nov 21, 2009since i have installed the nvidia drivers i have lost the graphical boot and just had a bar at the bottom of the screen instead. i tried to get the graphical screen back by adding vga=795 to my /boot/grub/grub.conf but when i rebooted not only did i not get the graphical boot or the toolbar at bottom.
i got list of all the drivers and services it is starting with ok next to it. i have also since doing this lost the bit when restarting or shutting down getting the words restarting or shutting down and just get blank screen with flashing cursor. i removed the vga=795 and i still get the list of drivers/services loading.
how do i get the quiet option back. i have checked /boot/grub/grub.conf and it has the quiet in it.i have also tried running update-grub but get message command not found. i have attached the grub.conf file
Ubuntu :: Use Grub As Main Bootloader?
Apr 25, 2010I have 2 hard drives, 1 with Windows 7, and one with Ubuntu.
Before installing Ubuntu I had PCLinuxOS then I got a book on learning Linux that is Ubuntu specific so I formatted it and installed Ubuntu 9.
My problem is:
When I boot up I get a WINDOWS bootloader first that lists:
Windows 7
Ubuntu
Then when I click Ubuntu I get the GRUB bootloader.
I've tried reinstalling Grub. I've also tried SuperGrub but none of the options worked, most returned error 15.
So I want ONLY GRUB to show up when booting. From there I think I can edit the grub file to set a timeout of 3-5 seconds, with Windows 7 as DEFAULT boot (Do I need to type "setactive" under my Windows 7 entry to do this part?)

Aug 5, 2011I installed Fedora 15 alongside Ubuntu, only to discover that it doesn't play nice with Ubuntu and this means that even though I formatted the Fedora Partition and made it into a new one, (i needed around a 7gb space for video editing files etc, so it is optimised for this). Anyway, that's off topic. Even though all traces of Fedora are gone, everyone time I go to boot from the HardDrive, it goes into Fedora's starting screen (the blue one with the loading icon) and then says it failed and gives a little command line.

Nov 2, 2010Just got done installing F14 64 and all went well however when I rebooted the machine it boots straight into windows, where is my GRUB boot loader? Only one drive in this machine (sda) and I remember going through the GRUB settings during the install. How to get a bootloader working now because in my linux experience (since RH5) it has always just installed the bootloader and worked. Apparently ext4 is bunk for me and when using LVM settings. I am up and running and grub is working.

I ran yast2 bootloader then clicked on bootloader options, then the checkbox for using a password, and then typed in my password twice. It isn't working. I've tried various different passwords to see if something was throwing it off like special characters or too many characters but no matter what I do I can't use the password to unlock the bootloader on bootup. It just tells me that I entered the incorrect password.

After installing Windows 7, the GRUB got re-written by the windows bootloader. Now after booting into the live cd and mounting /boot partition (sda2), I tried to reinstall the GRUB with this command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda as told by this [URL]
But I got the an error which says, Are you sure /dev is mounted? then i tried the same command on the / partition (sda5) which said, cannot find boot directory, Are you sure /dev is mounted?
And installation failed, now after restarting its just a black screen with grub> prompt.
