Ubuntu :: Fonts Incorrectly Rendered On Lucid And Nvidia / Resolve It?

Nov 30, 2010

Some of my rather useful applications have stopped being useful after a fresh installation of lucid. In particular, the fonts rendered on emacs, openoffice and others look awful to unreadable. Attached is an example screenshot for emacs but it doesn't appear to be application specific. Also, I have a hunch it has to do with my graphics driver
(Linux-x86, Nvidia Driver v195.36.24 ona GeForce 6200 TurboCache).

Ubuntu :: Monospace Fonts Not Rendered In Firefox And Epiphany?

Feb 7, 2011

I have some strange problem with rendering monospace fonts in FF and Epiphany. There is some attached example - most pages with some code blocks look like it, it is not possible to see the text, even after selecting it. I tried to change settings in FF of fonts, tried to change size, colors, font, but still it is not visible at all no matter what. However pages like that are displayed fine in "Chromium". Does anyone have an idea where do I begin solving this?

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Ms TrueTrye Fonts / Resolve This?

May 21, 2011

I'm trying to install the ms True type fonts on 11.04.

I typed the command: "sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer"

And, after a short wait the following screen appeared (added as an attachment)

And - I'm stuck. I can scroll up or down through the EULA with my scroll wheel or the arrow keys, but I cannot move on, I can't click on the OK, and no keypress does anything.

I tried to remove the installer with: "sudo apt-get remove ttf-mscorefonts-installer" and with the Ubuntu software center and both operations failed. The terminal advised me to reinstall before removal, which I can't.

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Can't Resolve Lucid Hostname

Aug 22, 2010

I am currently facing one issue with my network. I have several computers and this is what happens, everything works fine when I use the ip address, but when it comes to hostname.

-Windows computers can't ping/see the computer 5 (while it is running linux), but they can see computer 3 while running ubuntu 8.10 and computer 2 while on Mac OS X.

-computers 2 and 3 can see/ping everybody while on Mac/Linux.

-computer 5 can ping everybody.

-computers 1, 2, 3 and 4 (on every OS) can see/ping computer 5 while on windows xp.

Basically, the problem is with computer 5, it can see, but it is not seen by other computers (just when running ubuntu lucid)Computer 5 is supposed to be a printer server, so it must be seen by the others regardless of OS.When I ping computers 5 the TTL is 64, when I ping other computers, TTL is 128. I don't think this means anything, but I am not sure.Initially I thought this was a printer issue, but then I realized is something related to network when I tried to use ping/explore the computer 5 by ip/hostname (it works by ip, but not by hostname).Computer 5 is sending the hostname to the router properly, it appears in the dhcp client list.

OpenSUSE :: Lost Fonts After Installing NVIDIA Driver?

Sep 23, 2010

I have installed SUSE 11.3 and I am using KDE4. I also installed the font "misc-console".

After installing the NVIDIA driver 256.53 the font misc-console becomes useless because it is displayed so much slanted that it is imposible to read. However, if I disable the NVIDIA driver (by replacing "nvidia" with "nv" in xorg.conf), then it works fine. It also works fine in KDE3 and the NVIDIA driver. So, it seems to be a combination between NVIDIA and KDE4. A lot other fonts are also overly slanted and unreadable (like "Sony fixed", "misc fixed", etc.).

If I launch konsole from a terminal, I receive the following warning:

konsole(6928) Konsole::TerminalDisplay::setVTFont: Using an unsupported variable-width font in the terminal. This may produce display errors.

Is there a way that I can use "misc-console" without having to uninstall the NVIDIA driver? I'm just used to this font for my terminal.

The same happens whether I install the driver manually or through YAST, 32 or 64 bit. The video card is NVIDIA 8400GS, the system Athlon 64 4400+

Fedora :: System Fonts Wrong Until I Select System-Appearance Menu / Resolve This?

May 23, 2010

This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).

When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Alteration In Fonts Looks After Change Of Graphic Drivers From Nouveau To NVIDIA?

Jan 8, 2011

I recently changed my Graphic card drivers from Nouveau to nVIDIA in Suse 11.3 KDE.

One thing I have noticed that initially I had been using various Adobe Fonts in many applications prior to change of drivers. But after this change the looks of the same fonts became quite different, the length & breadth of "individual letters" changed quite a lot making them look not so beautiful as they were earlier. Am I missing something or is it a normal phenomenon. But I am satisfied with the present looks.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Can't Get Nvidia Graphics Driver To Work / Resolve This?

Apr 13, 2010

I made the mistake of trying to install an nvidia graphics driver from the download.nvidia.com/opensuse11.2 repository. My card is a PCI quadro nvs 295 so looks like it should be supported. The installation and update of the kernel seemed to be successful, but for some reason sax2 doesn't seem to recognise the nvidia card, even when I run "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" and I'm stuck with the VESA framebuffer graphics default in /etc/X11/xorg.conf code...

I've found tons of threads on this kind of thing but I only seem to be making things worse trying to fix it. If anyone can give me a hint and fix my pathetic-looking desktop I'd be very grateful!!! At the moment nothing that uses opengl will work either

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Kde / Nvidia Slow Down With Dual Monitor Configuration - Resolve It?

Mar 4, 2011

I run opensuse 11.3/kde desktop.
- updated to KDE:Factory
- X11 repository (V1.9.3)
- proprietary nvidia drivers (260.19.36)

Video card is a Quadro NVS 290. A dual head configuration using twinview is run.

The desktop becomes slow almost immediately (couple of seconds) after logging in (all applications). Turning off desktop effects does not make a difference as well as trying the various recipes on the internet regarding x.org conf-files.
The only action restoring responsiveness is to simply start nvidia-settings. Putting the following pseudo-action into a script-file and mapping it to a key allows to have a workable environment:

nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=0 && nvidia-settings -a PixmapCache=1

It is very annoying having to press a key every minute or so. Instead of creating a cronjob I would like to solve this issue. This behavior has been consistent across kde/x-org/nvidia/kernel updates for many month now.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PiTiVi Rendered Video Has Wrong Aspect Ratio

May 8, 2010

I have a video edited in Pitivi. The source files were recorded from a VHS tape, so it's NTSC size (720x480).

Problem is that when I render it the output looks stretched vertically. When I play it in Totem Movie Player, the aspect ratio option can be changed from "Auto" to "4:3 TV" and then it looks correct.

How can I render the output file with a different aspect ratio?

I tried going into Project Settings and adjusting the Video Output height and width, but this doesn't change the aspect ratio. Also tried PAL and VGA instead of NTSC. What should I try next?

Using the version of Pitivi that comes with a fresh install of 10.04 LTS.

Debian Multimedia :: When Video Gets Rendered Into MP4 It Comes Out At Increased Speed

Jul 28, 2015

Using Openshot, flowblade, or Kdenlive, when video gets rendered into mp4, it comes out at increased speed, both audio and video (seems like double speed but could be a different ratio)

When I play the exported mp4 with VLC for example, it shows the proper video length, not shortened. The video plays at high speed and for the second half of the video it just shows the last frame of the video until it runs out of time.

I have used Openshot extensively and have never had this problem, so I installed all the other video editors I could, and the problem persists (pitivi has a dependency problem so I haven't been able to use it).

I have tried several video players as well, all doing the same (VLC and Smplayer)

I am running Debian stable jessie, 64 bit, xfce

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Lucid Nvidia Driver Second Screen In Standby?

May 1, 2010

Plenty of people seem to be having issues with the nvidia graphics drivers, so I thought I'd add my woes to the heap. My issue is that I run two screens under twinview, but the second one doesn't work for some reason. More specifically, the Nvidia-settings tool is able to detect my second monitor, and I'm able to assign it a resolution and position and the like, and my desktop seems to extend over to where the second monitor is, but the monitor just remains in standby mode.

This happened with the drivers proprietary drivers that Nvidia tried to install (version 173 I believe) so I removed them and tried to install the 195 drivers manually, which I eventually figured out how to do (by blacklisting the nouveau module amongst other things). This still didn't fix things, and gave me the same issue.

(As an aside, where can I find the nvidia-glx-195 and nvidia-modaliases-195 packages, as they seem to have disappeared from the LP-PPA-nvidia-vdpau repository where they apparently used to be?)

The strange part though, is that my second screen works fine if I don't install any nvidia drivers, and just use the System->Preferences->Monitors applet. The second screen comes out of standby and works nicely.

One other little thing I've noticed that may have something to do with it, is that if I switch the outputs that the monitors are connected to, the other monitor will work. The output whose monitor doesn't work is always the one that has the DVI->VGA converter. Could this have something to do with it?

Ubuntu :: Nvidia 195.36.24 Driver 10.04 Lucid Memory Leak?

May 21, 2010

I dont know if this issue has already been solved, or if there are other threads dealing with it, but Im quite desperate with this bug that has been annoying me since I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04.

Firs I thought it would be GEM related, but Im using a proprietary graphics card, so thats not the way to solve it. I experience the problems a memory leak provokes, mainly that, as time goes by with the laptop turned on, the system needs more resources to execute simple actions, and it freezes too many times. Plus IBUS will, suddenly, stop working (I still don't know if it is related or not), and, most of the times I log in, Notification Area 2.30.0 will load with errors.

Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Driver Lucid Mythbuntu Failure ?

Had mythbuntu/xbmc running for 4 months with vdpau and all the same hardware. I killed it with an update and thought it'd all be easier To build it the 2nd time -- wrong! Fresh install of mythbuntu lucid off cd, Asus p5g43t-m pro, nvidia gforce 9500 gt

What I tried so far...Different drivers with the hardware app thingee. Multiple times -- Purge nvidia, purge nouveau, blacklist list of other video stuff with extra line after, stop gnome, manual install various drivers - 195.xxxxx or Synaptic install various drivers. Tried updates, adding avenard and daily build repos. Everything in combinations. Outcome remains consistant. Lo res error start, can't load nvidia driver, selected but not in use, xorg.conf needs editing.

I'm getting the same error messages as the common nvidia help posts describe but the solutions aren't working for me.

4 days of this, 3 installs plus a shot at Mint, and no progress. I'm pretty frustrated. I'd consider returning to karmic if I didn't think the updates would pork the nvidia driver all over again.

Last install of 9.10 there was a required edit of vmalloc=256M and a shut off of cx18. That's been fixed in lucid? What else ccould it be?
