Ubuntu :: Flash Game Hogs My System / Fix It?
Nov 25, 2010
I dual boot windows and ubuntu, and fount it very nice. But when i run flash game at my chrome, i can see the CPU usage increase a lot. When it reaches max, the flash game will be 'flashing' and lag. I use latest stable google chrome and flash player. Any idea how to fix this? I encounter no problem when playing at Windows.

I'll often run iceweasel for watching videos via flash (hulu, ....., et cetera) while working, in fedora I never noticed any performance problems, watching the video while using chrome for browsing, gedit for editing, et cetera, everything was responsive. Though, now on debian running iceweasel for the same purpose hogs memory and processor time, which slows down the responsiveness of the system as a whole, making it difficult to use other programs.I'm curious how I should go about troubleshooting this issue, and what diagnostics might help me find the solution.

i was wondering if anyone else was experiencing any flickering with flash? for instance, if you're playing a game, some of the objects and graphics in the game randomly flicker, or if you're watching a video on videos with annotations, the annotations frequently flicker.

This game is Java based. After rebooting the game works, but on ending the game several notification boxes remain. If these boxes are not closed in the reverse order that the game opened them, it is no longer possible to close them. Only by killing the Java processes can these notifications be made to close. Also after playing the game, even if all these notifications are closed it is many times necessary to kill the Java process(es) in order to get the game to load again at a later time. I am currently using Slackware 1.30, but a similar problem has existed in several of the past releases.

My system is Ubuntu 9.10, WINE 1.0.1-0ubuntu8, ATI HD4350 with ATI proprietary driver, Intel Core 2 Quad, 3 GB RAM
I'm trying to figure out what is the problem. I used Ubuntu 8.10 in the past and never encounter a problem like this. It keep freezing the computer 3 to 5 times a day. I check varies of sys.log, kernel.log, any kind of log you could think of and they not showing any reason why it froze. This is the only last thing it wrote because it froze
Code:
Jan 29 12:57:58 sean-desktop wpa_supplicant[936]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Jan 29 12:59:58 sean-desktop wpa_supplicant[936]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
Jan 29 13:01:58 sean-desktop wpa_supplicant[936]: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-RESULTS
This is always what it ended up with every time it froze. I check the log and it usually on that message. and I switched back to the previous kernel and assumed it the newest kernel causing problem. I had this problem before in my Ubuntu 8.10, so i switched to the previous kernel and the problem is solved. So on my ubuntu 9.10, I switched to the previous kernel, it still have the same result. I'm running out of ideas. I been thinking about switching to 8.10. The reason why I like 9.10 because of ext4 support

Do you know any game engines or game studios that can make adventure games, for instance in the style of Myst (1st person) or in the style of old Sierra games (3rd person), like King's Quest, Space Quest, etc.?I've seen AGI Studio, but it is too old, I'd like to use more modern graphics (although there is no need for 3D).

Don't know how to report to bugzilla, but first of all I want to know if it's only my PC or if you have this problem too. Today I started copy a 1.4 GByte from an internal disk (NTFS formatted) to a USB stick. The process is extremely slow (but this isn't a news, it always was with previous Fedora versions), in the meanwhile I tried to start Firefox and I found that it doesn't start: from KDE system monitor I see that Firefox starts loading but it blocks in "waiting for disk". Tried with some other program (Ksnapshot, Filezilla) and they're also extremely slow in loading when copy is active. When putting the copy process in pause, after some time programs starts opening.

I tried upgrading today from VirtualBox 3.1 to 3.2 (VirtualBox-3.2-3.2.0_61806_openSUSE111-1.x86_64.rpm) on my openSUSE 11.2 system and it's not cooperating. The installation itself went fine, but as soon as I try to start a guest, the VirtualBox process ramps up to 100% and stays there until I poweroff the guest. The guest itself is VERY slow. These guests worked fine on 3.1.
For example, if I start an openSUSE guest and stop the Grub counter, therefore leaving the screen at the Grub bootloader, the VirtualBox process remains at 100% forever, without any activity on the guest.I also have a Windows guest and it has the same problem.
I can obviously try downgrading again to 3.1, but I was hoping that someone else has run into this issue and knows what to do about it.

Freshly installed and updated Ubuntu 10, the first thing I did was install Wine and the second was installed Steam under Wine. Steam will run, but the moment it opens, xorg's CPU usage jumps to around 70% and stays there. Graphics card is an old ATI Radeon 9600 pro.

I am trying to solve one problem: When i run my process in background it hogs around 96% of CPU. But when ran in foreground, CPU utilization is almost zero. Is there any difference b/n a background and a foreground process wrto CPU utilization?

My configuration is OpenSuSE 11.4/KDE4/32bit. I am noticing that for about 20 minutes (or more) after first login every time there is a process which takes 100% CPU for most of the time and, of course, slows everything down. The system monitor suggests it is the 'tracker-miner' process (whatever that is). Do I need the tracker-miner? What good does it do? Is there any way to stop it (not to start it)?

I realize Ubuntu Desktop comes with a simple tool that makes "installs to a USB", but isn't that a bit different from REGULAR Ubuntu installation?
So: If I boot the Ubuntu CD installer, and choose my Flash Drive as the destination, will it configure things specific to the hardware I am running on, so when I swap the flash drive to another system, there will be problems?
BTW, I've actually done this a couple times and it's worked, but I'm just wondering if those were flukes or if it is like this always.

I've read plenty of tutorials for this kind of thing, and they all seem to be about putting a full fledged OS on your flash drive. All I'd like to do is put the install medium (slackware dvd) onto my 8GB flash drive to install it to my old desktop's HDD.

Does software exist that does the following? Monitor processes and rank by CPU usage, as top does. Flag excessive CPU usage by individual processes, using rules and queries to a database of previous offenders. Offer a configurable setup to automatically terminate CPU hogs under certain circumstances. Might include replacing displayed browser pages with a notification screen. Add incident report to database for each offense. My personal favorite is Flash, which hides behind 'nspluginviewer'. It keeps my CPU warm even when it is not displaying anything. That heat equals wasted energy. Multiply that by the millions (probably billions) of computers worldwide that have sleeping Flash players running on them right now, and that equals a lot of wasted energy. Probably a coal-fired powerplant or two worth of wasted energy.

I have 3 u3 type flash drives, 1 Memorex and 2 Sandisk Cruzers, and one non-U3 (JDSecure). The purpose is file storage. All four work perfectly on Ubuntu 10.04 and XP.I have continual problems with the U3 devices on 11.04. Problems vary from not being able to open the flash drives causing screen to freeze until I remove the device from the hub, or I am unable to unmount the device causing the desktop to freeze until devices are removed.Sometimes I am able to access files in the flash, before the freeze. The non-U3 device works perfectly on 11.04, 10.04, and XP.Sounds like a system problem to me. I have google searched this to death, but can't find a solution.

I have one new laptop that doesn't see one usb bootable device. The usb is a 1G with Mint8 on it that works on plenty of other systems. This is a newer HP laptop core i7 that see's two other flash drives and tries even to boot to my older flash install (only has syslinux no other files) but doesn't show the newer one in bios boot order or boot order choice F9.
It will work correctly under windows so the system does see it.
how to that that single drive to show up in order to boot to it?
Did power down, remove all usb except this one, tried to see if it fell under hard drives instead of usb.

So this just started a few days ago... maybe 7 at the most.
I am working along, and screen goes black, or just freezes... the lights on my laptop start blinking and becomes everything becomes unresponsive.
I have noticed it is usually when I am Using Firefox and Flash content. I have also noticed it happens when using Deluge, but it usually takes 5 minutes to kick in.
I am using firefox at the moment, but I am sure if I load up a ..... video, it will lock up on me again.

Flash is causing severe problems on my slackware laptop. It happens pretty much only when I go on ..... and playback starts. Then the whole screen flickers and everything freeze. I have no mouse or keyboard (cursor is frozen) and I need to SSH to the machine to kill the process "plugin-containe" whatever it might be.
SO basically, is there anything to do to prevent such problems?
