Feb 22, 2010I am trying to install a linux distrobution on a laptop that can only boot off a cd or harddrive (or network? not sure), except that it has no cd drive and no operating system. That's right, no floppy no USB no CD. I read on the internet a chap installed Ubuntu with these conditions by taking out the harddrive and installing an old copy of Ubuntu on it on another computer with a disc drive, and then putting it back in his laptop and upgrading.
Now I have installed DOS 7.10 before on this laptop hard-drive and it worked, but it wasn't very useful, being a text based system. I have tried installing Windows XP (only because I am familiar with it) but my installation CD is OEM, and doesn't seem to like it. So I put the ubuntu 4.10 cd in my desktop with the CD drive after clearing all data off the laptop hard-drive (DOS 7.10). Then the cd boots and I am given the menu to install ubuntu. So I press Enter, it starts installing and then freezes at the language selection screen. So what is my problem? I have pressed lots of keys in order to get some response, but nothing. I waited 10min for something to happen, but nothing did.

Dec 25, 2010So I was installing 10.10 to be my only operating system on my 3 year old custom built computer and all of a sudden it stopped working at the point of "whenever you are ready" but not letting me go forward because it still was loading. I waited a long time and it was frozen so I restarted my computer and now I don't have anything on it. No operating system at all. Except the symbol " _ " blinking rapidly. Jul 13, 2011I am pretty much a noob when it comes to Linux. But I desperately need to do exactly what the title of this thread says.I have this ISO file which is a bootable CD image. But instead of booting off of a CD, I want to boot from a USB flash drive. I understand that I can't simply just burn it with ImgBurn or whatever, and then just drag and drop the files and folder to a USB flash drive. Because hidden files, bootloader, etc. would not be visible and not copied. I know I'm in for some special software in order to copy every single byte from that ISO image to my USB flash drive.
I did try extracting the ISO with PeaZip (7-zip based) under Windows Vista, but that didn't work out very well. It resulted in a few files and folders, totaling in at about 2 KB, while the source ISO file is actually some 50 MB. WinRAR, on the other hand, would simply just create an empty folder where to put the files (no files created/extracted), flash before my eyes and call it a day ("complete").I have learned from other posters on other forums that there is this Unilx program/command called DD. How can I use DD to accomplish this task?

The Verbatim flash drive will boot my Dell Studio XPS and my Dell Latitude 2100 netbook. It will NOT boot either of my Dell Dimension 4600s. The Dimension 4600s respond with a message "Missing operating system" when I try to boot from the Verbatim drive. The Firefly works on all machines and I configured Kingston 1GB and 2GB Data Travelers which also work on all machines.

Dec 11, 2010I've come across this rare issue, I have a friend that uses some software that is particularly slow in Windows 7, the best compatibility is in Windows XP, I told him to make a partition and have both OSes in the computer, at which he replied: "Could I have a different OS for each user?", it seemed like a good question to me, so is that possible?, suppose that I login and it boots me to Vista, then I loggout and Linus Torvalds comes and logins and boots him into Ubuntu, he gets bored and logs out, afterwards my friend comes and logs in, booting into XP, summarizing:

May 18, 2011I wished to know if I can install windows 7 on my system when I am already running Linux Mint 10(as the only operating system on my machine). That configuration is called a dual boot. If you install Win7 first (or it is already present), THEN install linux, you will find that grub notices both and you will not need to mess with the MBR. The better solution is to load mint, add VirtualBox, and install Win7 into a virtual machine. Then you get to run Linux and Windows AT THE SAME TIME!

Jun 7, 2011I'm trying to install OpenSUSE on an external usb drive but when I boot from USB, all I get is a message saying "Missing Operating System". I've tried different ways of partitioning the drive either by letting OpenSUSE do it automatically or doing it myself. It's just a basic partitioning scheme, with swap on one partition sdb2 and the rest on root sdb1 .
I made sure to have GRUB be installed on the root partition of sdb (usb drive) instead of in the MBR (I've installed Fedora and Ubuntu on usb drives this way).
