Ubuntu :: Firefox Error While Syncing

Nov 12, 2010

I am running Firefox 3.6.12 on Ubuntu 10.10. I did all the updates.

I am running a highspeed connection with Cox cable.

I am running the following add-ons.

AdBlockPlus
BeefTaco
BetterPrivacy
DownloadHelper
Ghostery
GoogleSharing
NoScript
TestPilot
Ubuntu Firefox Modifications
Xmarks

I disabled Xmarks and installed Firefox Sync. I tried Firefox Sync several times with no luck. I keep getting "Error While Syncing". When I check for further information, I get the message "Unable to Sync ... Unknown Error."

Xmarks still works fine but, as it is going to end soon, I would like to replace it.

Ubuntu Installation :: Kernel Panic Not Syncing / Relocation Error

Apr 15, 2010

I tried to upgrade Empathy from 2.28 to 2.30 via Synaptic but the upgrade always failed as there were some errors to do with the dependencies (libglib2.0* and others). The dependency issues were odd as it told me that Empathy wanted to install files that were older than the existing ones. So I decided to uninstall Empathy and all its dependencies, and re-install the whole (updated) package and it's dependencies from scratch via Synaptic. After the install, Ubuntu told me that there were broken packages and Update Manager kept on popping up asking me to run a partial upgrade to fix these broken packages. Well, the partial upgrade also failed (due to the same dependency issues , I suspect) so I decided that I'll run a full system update (as Update Manager had being bugging me prior to my failed Empathy upgrade). 486 Mb later, Ubuntu no longer wants to boot - it freezes on the splash screen.

When I start it in recovery mode, it spews out the various processes being loaded. Trying to run earlier kernels (2.6.31-19 / 17 / 14) from GRUB, in both normal mode and recovery mode does not seem to help.I am running Ubuntu 9.10, kernel 2.6.31-20-generic.

a) Is the problem to do with the kernel - did the update try to update the kernel as I note that there is a new stable release (2.6.33-2)? However, GRUB still indicates that the kernel is 2.6.31-20.
b) Would updating the kernel to 2.6.33-2 help? If so, how do I do this?
c) Is the problem, as I suspect, to do with the libglib* files? If so, how do I fix it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Error - Kernel Panic - Not Syncing: Attempted To Kill Init

Jun 8, 2011

Today I was upgrading my netbook with Ubuntu 10.10 on it to 11.04 via the Update Manager. I got a few errors and the Update Manager seemed like it wasn't continuing, so decided to exit it. It didn't respond so after a while I decided to restart the netbook. However the on/off/standby/restart, etc. button in the top right wasn't responding either, so I decided to force a shutdown with the power button on my netbook. Now Ubuntu doesn't start up, and gives me an error along the lines of:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! Pid: 1, comm: init Not tainted 2.6.35-28-generic #50-Ubuntu Now could I in some way repair my Ubuntu installation while still keeping the files I already have on my computer? Maybe via booting from a flash drive or something...?

Fedora Installation :: Error - Kernel Panic - Not Syncing: DMAR Hardware Is Malfunctioning

Mar 26, 2010

i study computational systems engineering.. and in my school (itlp) we've got fedora 12 installed in some of the computers.. and we use it to learn network administration and security. the reason of this message.. is that i want to install fedora 12 in my notebook (dv4-1525la vu068la).. but an error keeps poping up.. the error is the next one..

DMAR: No ATSR found
DRDH: handling fault status reg f0003d63
Kernel panic - not syncing: DMAR hardware is malfunctioning

and though i have looked in bugzilla.. there is no help for me there.. they say.. "press tab in the welcome bootscreen when you are about to select whether to install or restore an existing system and write intel_iommu=off and press enter" but that does not really helps.. it just does the same.. in some blogs they say "upgrade your bios".. but i say.. then why i can not install the olders distributions with my "old" bios.

General :: Kernel Panic - Not Syncing: VFS : Unable To Mount Roof Fs On Unknown-block Error?

Apr 21, 2010

I downloaded the ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso file from the website, extracted it, and ran the Wbiu.exe file - it prompted to get my info and then restart. Upon restarting, I then had the choice to run Windows or Ubuntu, and I've been running Ubuntu ever since.

I ran into some speed-bumps. Upon entering the Ubuntu option at my start-up prompt, I go to another prompt asking me to choose from: Ubuntu, linux 2.6.31-20 Generic Ubuntu, linux 2.6.31.20 Recovery mode Ubuntu, linux 2.6.31-14 Generic Ubuntu, linux 2.6.31-14 Recovery mode Windows 7 installer Windows Vista installer
I've been choosing the very first one, the 31-20 generic, but just this morning after downloading some programs from the Synaptic and transferring a few Gbs of music, I received this error prompt: Code: [2.879604] Kernel panic -- not syncing: VFS : Unable to mount roof fs on unknown--block (8,2) After that, I've been running the 2.6.31-14 generic installer. I have no idea what any of this means and I've spent time crawling through threads trying to figure it out. I mean, it still WORKS but I just help but think I've done something very wrong. ALERT: SUDO PASSWORD QUESTION

I hope the cautionary sign above has dispelled any annoyed gurus who have answered this question dozens of times before. I've crawled through my fair share of threads concerning this, the best corollary being the following: forum/linux-newbie/157773-solved-sudo-password-errors-usb-internet-issues.html; which, strangely enough, was never really solved. Like the user in that thread, when I access the terminal and type in a command, the next line invariably states "[sudo] password for jacob' -- when I hit enter and type in the long list of possibilities I've read (read: sudo, su, su root, su passwd, sudo passwd, sudo root, et al.), alas, nothing happens but the same statement.

Ubuntu Installation :: Boot - Error "Kernel Panic - Not Syncing:VFS:Unable To Mount Root Fs On Unknown-block(0,0)"

Oct 12, 2010

I started installing the beta of Maverick a few days ago, but the update server was running inordinately slow, so I canceled it. Several times, I have attempted to continue the installation, but I've been unable to reach the server. Shortly after this happened, I could no longer boot normally--I get the error:

Code: Kernel Panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) Choosing the previous kernel fixes the problem.

So, I obviously want to upgrade to the release version now. When I open the update manager, I get asked if I want to do a partial upgrade to complete the install. I'm a bit leery of doing this since I only have one previous kernel to go back to (my list got really long and I have another operating system entry underneath, so I set my automagic boot manager to only keep two), and if I can no longer boot after the upgrade, I'll have to use Windows until it gets fixed... So, should I finish the upgrade, try to troubleshoot the error, or do something else to jump right to the latest release, after being partway through the upgrade?

Fedora Installation :: F11 Installation Error Kernel Panic - Not Syncing

Jun 10, 2009

I am trying to install Fedora 11 from the full DVD iso on a system using an Intel D945GNT motherboard with a dual-core 3.2GHz Pentium D installed. The installation hangs quite quickly and produces the error "Kernel panic - not syncing"... The previous line is something along the lines of "EIP: [something] intel_i915_configure() [something else]". I have tried many different kernel boot options, such as acpi=off, nolapic, nommconf, and the like, but to no avail. It seems as though this has something to do with a memory mapping conflict due to the allocation of video memory for the on-board graphics chip, but I'm not at all certain about that.

General :: Use Firefox To Connect To Smb Shares Error "Firefox Doesn't Know How To Open This Address, Because The Protocol (smb) Isn't Associated With Any Program"

Jan 10, 2010

i am wanting to use Firefox to connect to my smb shares. However, i keep getting this error message: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (smb) isn't associated with any program. My client configuration is as follows: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.1.8pre) Gecko/20100106 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Shiretoko/3.5.8preI tried the instructions below to try and fix the problem with no success: Quote: From [URL]

Linux with Firefox In order to connect to a network share directly from you browser under Linux, you must configure Firefox to handle URL's starting with "smb://". This is done by typing "about:config" in the address line and hitting return. After that you must right-click the list of settings and choose "New -> Boolean" as shown below.

As name you must type: "network.protocol-handler.external.smb" with a value of "true". After that you must do the same thing over again, but this time choose "New -> String", type the name: "network.protocol-handler.app.smb" with a value of the path to the application you wish to use for browsing network shares. If you use KDE, this will typically be "/usr/bin/konqueror".

Ubuntu :: Firefox Error "firefox Is Already Running"

Jan 7, 2011

I've experienced the fairly annoying firefox error where it refuses to start the GUI. If there were no active firefox processes, nothing happened when I started it, but it did "start", meaning that I got the "firefox is already running" when I tried again. I found a fix to this, which was to delete some or all files in the ~/.mozilla/firefox directory. I now have 2 different problems. Number one is that the problem keeps reoccurring and I'd like to know what's causing it. The second problem is that even when I've "fixed" the issue, I still can't run firefox from scripts or click links. I get the "firefox is already running" error instead of a new tab or window.

Fedora Networking :: Connecting To FTP Error "Failed To Execute Child Process "/usr/lib/firefox-3.5/firefox" (No Such File Or Directory)"

Aug 3, 2009

I am running F11 and I want to mount an FTP, but when I try to connect to an ftp server using Places -> Connect to Server, or the bookmarks I made I get an error that says 'Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib/firefox-3.5/firefox" (No such file or directory)' and sometimes it mounts anyway, but most the time it doesn't, and it never connects to the folder I asked it to, I just have to open the mount and navigate to it. I figure this happened because Firefox upgraded to 3.5.1 and the folder is now /usr/lib/firefox-3.5.1/firefox, but I don't know how to update this so that it looks in the right location.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Getting Firefox / Thunderbird Error Messages

Nov 10, 2010

Problem-cannot mount 2 other samba computers on my ubuntu 10.04 via 'sudo mountall'. Additionally I now get Firefox/Thunderbird error messages as listed below. Had no problems with ubuntu UNTIL I attempted install of VirtualBox running WinXP client in my Ubuntu host. VirtualBox seemed to install ok but upon startup of WinXP client all I got was a black screen. To close it I had to do "Power Off" which VBox manual says is like a hard power off and is to be avoided. So I guess it's like I crashed XP within Ubuntu.

Now - ubuntu boots ok except will not auto mount other samba connected computers. Manually running 'sudo mountall' in terminal gives --
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } swapon: /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18: swapon failed: Device or resource busy
mountall: swapon /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18 [2235] terminated with status 255
mountall: Problem activating swap: /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18
retrying with upper case share name
mount error(6): No such device or address
Refer to the mount.cifs( manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)
mountall: mount /media/samba_share [2239] terminated with status 32

Additionally I now get these warning messages when Firefox and Thunderbird start. (They do start and seem to work fine.)--
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } What I've tried-

1) fstab UUID matches error UUID above and matches UUID from blkid command:
fstab =#Entry for /dev/sdc2 :
UUID=24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18 none swap sw 0 0
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; }
blkid = /dev/sdc2: UUID="24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18" TYPE="swap"

2) Reinstalled mountall from synaptic pkg manager; did not try to remove mountall and reinstall. To remove, removes LOTS of other packages from system - not brave enough to do that (yet).

3) Ran fsck on swap partition as below. Swap not found. (that confuses me.)p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } john@johndesk:~$ fsck /dev/sdc2
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
fsck: fsck.swap: not found
fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.swap for /dev/sdc2
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } 4) deleted all the files in ~/.dbus/session-bus. Ubuntu just rebuilds the same file back.
