View 1 RepliesIt's a newbie question that has probably already been answered hundreds of times, but Google didn't help me.
How can I install an application I've downloaded from the internet?I know I can easily install software with the terminal (apt-get, yum etc.) and that there is also a package manager. But still I'd like to know how to install an application I've downloaded with the browser. I've downloaded Thunderbird from this link URL...and after unpacking, I have a folder called 'thunderbird'. Now, what do I have to do to install the application?
I'm not actually concerned with installing Thunderbird anymore because when I typed 'thunderbird' in the terminal, it told me that it isn't installed and if it should be installed. I replied 'y' and some minutes later (slow internet connection...) it was installed and ready to use..
I have just installed fedora 15, I haven't seen fedora since version 7 back in 2007, and I must say, it's very impressive.I can't however figure out how to add a downloaded application, like Intellij-Idea to the activities menu. With the old gnome, you could just create a task bar short cut to any .sh and give it a png icon, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to do the same for activities. Searching online doesn't help, since all I seem to find is how to add or remove packages, with the UI, which I would never do to begin with, as I am a command line person. But for some reason, I am quite impressed with this activities menu thing, and I want to use it on the laptop

View 3 Replies View RelatedAs a long time Windows user, I am stuck on the basics of installing and running downloaded Linux applications. I've tried to read a few tutorials but am still baffled. I am using a Puppy based boot CD and, of course, the applications that come with the Puppy all work fine. It is when I try to add something new that I become lost. Example: I just downloaded a Linux version of the Firefox browser.
I click on the downloaded file in the Download Manager and kinda expect the thing to give me a executable set-up file, but just get a whole bunch of files. One available option is to "extract" them. I create a folder to extract them to and "extract". With Firefox I see nothing in that folder. With a few other applications, I see an extracted list of files but and try to find one file that will magically start and install or boot an application, but nothing ever happens. So, how does one download , extract, install, and then run a basic application? The references I have found on the Internet tend to be rather old or more complex that my brain can handle.
On Ubuntu 10.04, I have been trying to add some Gnome startup applications via the menu system without success. How can I debug/trace this process?

I have a workstation dedicated to monitoring. The goal is to have multiple web sessions and other applications running across dual screens on multiple virtual desktops. I have a nice Perl/TK/wmctrl script that will automatically rotate the desktops. All is working great.
The problem is, I need a solution to automatically start the applications on the correct desktop, with the correct window size, in the correct location on the desktop. That way we can start the monitor boxes in the morning and have everything start in the correct place. It is a really cool effect to have wall mounted monitors with cube rotation showing off multiple graphs and more.
Do any of you pros know how to start an application with a specific window size and define where on the desktop it is placed? The box is running OpenSUSE 11.4 KDE. Is that kind of control possible?
I have a strange problem with some applications in 10.10. This applies so far to virtualbox and skype. When I try to start them, nothing happens. Virtualbox just flickers the edge of the screen. Virtualbox has worked before, and i'm reluctant to delete it as I have another machine installed. Skype has never worked, and even when I have reinstalled, the same happens.
View 2 Replies View Relatedafter the netinst finished to download the last package, one hour later the process never continues, I checked the log file and I didn't find anything suspecious, also dmesg and nothing, in fact, in the log file before checked I found that the last line was registered just a minute ago - DHCP renew IP-, so my questions are:
1. all the packages downloaded are gone?, can I restart the installation using all those packages downloaded?
2. where I can find the error or problem that cause that the installation was freezed?
3. in the case that installation needs to start from the beginning, can I use the package downloaded?

Is there a stand-alone SWF viewer I can use to view downloaded SWF files on Fedora please? I know there's a browser plugin, but it does not have any controls to pause or rewind the file - it just plays the SWF file from start to end. I've tried using Mplayer, but it does not appear to support playing SWF files.

if i configured the /etc/yum.conf file to:
keepcache=1
this seems to keep downloaded packages. in the dir specified at:
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
the next time i wish to use these packages and install them, how would i use yum to do this or do i just use rpm instead ? Would it be necessary to connect to the internet to do this? What about those package dependencies will i have to install them all one at a time?
I have fedora 12 (amd64) on desktop. I was wondering if there a way to backup and restore all my downloaded updates since installation?! In the same manner that debian has aptoncd. I am planning to migrate on all data to a new partition with clean install and then just move the updates there.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've got something or someone downloading from me, probably scraping, and i can't figure out WHAT is using all of my bandwidth, and WHERE it's coming from.I don't know what SERVICE its from (eg, is this an apache request, or DNS DOS), what FILES are being accessed (if any, eg apache requests/scrape), and what IP is requesting them.My apache logs isn't showing anything that makes me thing i'm being scrapped. I'm kinda stuck in a brain fart right now and can't remember how to track this down, but the long and short is that all of my band width is being consumed, and 1 of my CPU cores is staying maxed out ("top" says that it's the avahi service).I've shut off the following services 1 by 1 to see if any of them would cause a drop in network usage, and none of them did:
apache
samba
