What command do I need to use to find the device name of drives , in particular an inserted USB drive that is not mounted yet ?Everywhere I search tell me to do this:

This is the information lsusb gives:

But this tells me nothing about where the device file is! How can I find that, or create one myself?
Recently, I created a device sc0 through device mapper. The divice could be found in /dev/mapper/sc0. My problem is that the device doesn't exist in /dev/partitions which will block my following test.BTW, I found dm-0 in /dev/partitions. Is it the same as /dev/mapper/sc0? But the device /dev/dm-0 doesn't exist!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Mandriva 08 with Gnome and Nautilus. My O.S won't open a desktop icon but it does show up in "Computer" and HardDrake. If I go to "Places" "Computer" and open up the "Preferences" there is "Settings" which I will include as an attachment. What is the GUI way to use a Flash drive or a MP3 device on Linux. I would rather not use the terminal if it is not necessary.

I have setup an Ubuntu 10.10 server with two software raids.md0 is a four disk raid5 - 3TBmd1 is a two disk mirror - 300GBI think I have a drive failing (and am going to replace it regardless, but I have to take an outage), what appears to happen is it comes on-line with one id (/dev/sda) then something happens AFTER the rebuild completes and the drive changes to another id (in this case /dev/sdh) and puts the array in a failed state.Is this some sort of protection mechanism to prevent degradation to the array? When setting this up, presumably before the disk started to fail, Ids seemed to jump from reboot to reboot and caused me all kinds of issues.Also, neither device appears to return info after the change.

I just compiled my first own kernel (I'm using Arch Linux), following the tutorial on the german site. Now I tried to boot it, I ended up failing with this message: Code: Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/sda1 ... Root device '/dev/sda1' doesn't exist, Attempting to create it. I simply copy&pasted the Arch-entry, i.e. I also had the disk by uuid there. The failure message was the same, just the root device name was the different name Also, at first I did not have the initrd line in my menu.lst (as written in my tutorial that I may not need it). I am trying to set up a mdadm raid in a new PC that I am building for home theatre. the machine boot just fine from /dev/sdc running ubuntu 9.10 However in gparted /dev/sda and dev/sdb show to be part of /devmapper/sil_ajbicfacbaej Both dev/sda and /dev/sdb were drives that used to be part of a sil hardware raid on a previous machine. I would like to use them as a new mdadm raid on this new machine the old hardware card was really quite slow. the drives are now pluged into the MB and should bw much faster there.

I have two Sata 3 drives C and D, I have window 7 on C. I am trying to install Ubuntu and duel-boot My problem is when I load into the live disk the file system can only find the 1.8 gigs left on the live CD. If i run the installer it says no root file system is defined please correct this in the partitioning menu.
The problem is that the menu is completely empty. If I load Gparted in the live CD then it shows nothing at all except a message that says something like no device detected. Obviously the problem is that the installer can't find any were to put Ubuntu. Could windows 7 possibly be the problem?
Earlier I had two physical hard drives in my computer, one with Windows and one with Ubuntu. Now I have a new computer and have installed these hard drives in it. I run Windows 7, and I can find the Windows disk, but not the Ubuntu disk. This doesn't surprise me, as Ubuntu is another filesystem, however, earlier I could format it with a partition manager, but now I didn't even find it with that!

Everything with the RAID device works fine, the only question I have belogs to the GRUB 0.97 Booloader. So, I plugged in two hard drives to my server. I started with two, an IDE and an SATA. Then I plugged in another SATA and an external SATA using a PCI controller card.
I currently only have command prompt (Putty) access. How can I set the drives up to be usable. They were on another server that died.
I got opensuse 11 running on a dedicated HDD and got another 4 HDDs created as RAID 10 via the Intel Matrix RAID Controller of the ICH10 southbridge. I simulated a device failure and disconnected one of the drives and during POST the controller simply says that I need to rebuilt the array from the OS. So how am I supposed to do that since there were no usable raid utitlities for openSuSe delivered out of the box.

I had installed windows XP and then Ubuntu a few months ago. I was mostly using Ubuntu only. My Ubuntu is up to date. Windows XP got the blue screen and i had to re-install it. So, i used the Disk Utility and formatted my C-drive as NTFS with a boot flag.
After that, when i attempted to install windows XP on my C-Drive that i just formatted, Windows Setup is unable to recognize any drives! I really don`t want to uninstall Ubuntu or format my whole HDD, just to install windows XP. But i also want to install windows XP as i have to run some applications in it!.
First time linux user, am trying to install a fresh full install of Fedora 12 dvd i686 version. I have two identical sata drives, which fedora fails to identify. Have reset the bios, changed settings in the bios, still not finding them. I have an asus av8-x motherboard, with a athlon dual core processer.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe Fedora installer won't display my two SATA hard drives. I've tried both the x86_64 live CD and DVD. On the live CD, fdisk -l displayed nothing. However, if I click "Specialized Storage Devices" a devices shows up as "BIOS RAID set (stripe)" with a capacity equal to both my hard drives. I don't even have RAID enabled in BIOS - it is set to AHCI. Other os installers display the hard drive correctly.
Specs:
2x 640GB western digital caviar blacks
ASUS M4A78T-E 790GX motherboard
I recently installed Fedora 11 x86_64 (dual boot with XP) and am having difficulty finding two of my three hard drives to mount them. This is my setup: 80 GB Hard drive (boot drive) with two partitions, one for XP (NTFS) and one for F11 (ext4). 2x250 GB Hard drives, one is formatted with NTFS, the other one has yet to be formatted (my plan is to use ext4).
All of my drives are SATA, on the same nVidia controller. After the install, I can see only the 80 GB hard drive (both partitions). What do I need to do to find the other two drives? During the install, it called the partitions /dev/sda0, sda1, sda2 and sda3, but I no longer see these drives. If I knew where the drives were I could mount them, but my systems just isn't seeing the drives.

Basically it does not find the CD-ROM
No CD-ROM drives found
Sound Juicer could not find any CD-ROM drives to read.
There is a CD and a DVD on one machine and a USB CD drive on the other. This used to work some time back (at leasr May 2009)

Having problems with external hard drives. I may be wrong, but I suspect they originated with an upgrade to 10.04 last Christmas. Around that time I also started using Amazon's S3 storage system, and, as a consequence, I stopped using my WD 80G external drive, previously used to backup my important files.
A week or so ago I decided to start using the WD drive again. I can't remember exactly what I did, but it wasn't happy - never caused any problems before. When I plug it in, the on-off light as the front keeps flashing on and off, and when I try to remove the drive I get the message: Error unmounting volumne An error occured while performing an operation on "My Book" (Partition 1 of WD 800BB External): The device is busy
Details: Cannot unmount because file system on device is busy Assuming the device had died - it's about 5 years old - I bought a 160G Samsung S-Series drive - my but they do look neat! Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have solved my problem. I plugged the new drive in, and it happily appeared on my desktop. It seemed a good idea at the time, but I then started to format the drive - using the default option of FAT. All went well at first, but then the format process stopped.
My new Samsung drive now seems to be operating pretty much as the WD device, I can't copy to the drive, and attempts to unmount it generate a response similar to what's happening with the WD drive. Currently, although plugged in, I can't see the drive on my desktop, although it appears under Places. However, when I try to mount the drive, I get the message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG A job is pending on /dev/sdb1
I had grub trouble with a hardware change and have been trying to solve this. I think I have done more harm then good. I can not boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7. Here is the boot info script and other info on my problem. Can someone please help me with this,

I have this software I want to use to extract data from a Polar heart rate monitor. Everything related to sound is working flawlessly. I just need to know the device name of the front microphone ("microphone" 2" in sound properties) so that I can insert it in the following cli command for a script: "rs200_decode -m /dev/XXX -b -o /home/user/dumb.bin"
I checked the forums but I only see references to /dev/dsp, /dev/audio, etc. I don't have any of those but rather /dev/snd/controlC0, hwC0D2, pcmC0D0c, pcmC0D0p, pcmC0D1p and pcmC0D2c.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit. The sound card is a generic HDA Intel audio chip. Lspci outputs: Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just finished a build of a new GNU/Linux boxen with openSUSE 11.2. I have a MSI Big Bang Xpower X58 motherboard which has two SATA controller chips, one is the standard Intel ICH10R chip for SATA 3.0 Gb/s and one is the Marvell 9128 chip for SATA 6.0 Gb/s. The BIOS recognizes the Western Digital Caviar Black 6.0 Gb/s drive on either SATA controller chips, /however/ I am unable to install (and boot) when the drive is connected to the Marvell controlled ports. As you can guess, I'd like to boot from the faster interface!
1. The BIOS allows me to select the Western Digital drive as a secondary boot device, so I know, at least at the BIOS level, it's there. This is true whether I have the drive connected to the Intel or Marvell ports. (The DVD drive is the primary boot device.)
2. When trying to install openSUSE 11.2 from DVD, the installer says that it can't find any hard drives on my system when I have the drive connected to the Marvell port. The installer finds the drive fine when it is connected to the Intel port.
3. I installed everything with the drive connected to the Intel port. I switched the drive to the Marvell port afterward and the system refuses to boot completely, stalling at some point where it starts to look for other filesystem partitions. This led me to conclude that perhaps the problem is with openSUSE and not hardware weirdness with the system having two separate SATA controllers?
How do you find the device (e.g. /dev/*) for a mounted USB drive in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? I'm trying to format a Cruzer USB flash drive, and when I plug it in, the icon for the mounted filesystem appears on my desktop. However, when I open GParted, it doesn't list the filesystem as an option to partition.
The recommendations I've found through Google include monitoring tail -f /var/log/messages, which they claim should list the device name when the drive is mounted, but this never happens for me. I've also read that the USB drive would usually be linked to /dev/sdb, but this appears as a broken link on my filesystem. How else would I find the device?
