Ubuntu :: Staticly Assign Device Names (/dev/sda, Etc.) To Specific Hard Drives?

This is one of those questions where I highly suspect that the answer will be something like ". . .just stinks bein' you, kid."My setup:I have Ubuntu 10.04 x64 (desktop) installed on a computer with a bunch of SATA ports, including one e-SATA on the backBecause of the way the hardware works with these ports, the *external* port is the first SATA port, a second SATA port inside becomes #2, and a cluster of four ports (that can be made into a (ahem!) RAID array become ports 3 through 6.
All ports are configured as SATA (PATA emulation)My boot drive is located on SATA-2 (the inside connector), a four disk "MD" raid array is located on SATA 3-6, and I have an external HD enclosure that I plug into the e-SATA connection.
With all six drives plugged in, they get ordered like this:
/dev/sda - External drive
/dev/sdb - Internal operating system drive (bootable)

Currently I have 5 HID's I would like to use on the system at any given time. However, I have the problem of them using different device paths depending on what order I plug them in... Which wreaks havoc on qjoypad and also my music software which looks for a specific device number, which may or may not be the same as it was last time.
For example, I have 2 rock band drum controllers which I use to send MIDI signals. I need them always assigned to the same device path, so that I don't have to change the settings in my music software every time I run it, to make sure it's looking at the right controller
Or if I am going to play games with a gamepad, but I also have the drums hooked up, the gamepad may be assigned to /dev/input/js2, so I create my qjoypad profile.... Let's say the next day I reboot with the drums not plugged in, the gamepad is now /dev/input/js0, and the qjoypad profile won't work because it is looking for that gamepad at /dev/input/js2... So I would either have to create a new profile, or hook the drums back up in the same order ... Or something
It's just a mess...
Is there any way to tell Ubuntu to say "/dev/input/js0 is always Playstation gamepad", "/dev/input/js1 is always drum pad 1", etc.?
Or some way to do away with /dev/input scheme altogether and somehow link directly to the name of the device?

I've read man screen but still cannot do some things. How can I list all windows? man says: Use C-a ". I tried holding ctrl + a but then if I want type ". I have to press shift and press key which usually gives me but this not work? Can I type " without using shift? Second how can I assign names to windows? When I type ctrl+a+w I see 0-$bash 1$bash 2*$bash but is possible to assign other names?

Having problems with external hard drives. I may be wrong, but I suspect they originated with an upgrade to 10.04 last Christmas. Around that time I also started using Amazon's S3 storage system, and, as a consequence, I stopped using my WD 80G external drive, previously used to backup my important files.
A week or so ago I decided to start using the WD drive again. I can't remember exactly what I did, but it wasn't happy - never caused any problems before. When I plug it in, the on-off light as the front keeps flashing on and off, and when I try to remove the drive I get the message: Error unmounting volumne An error occured while performing an operation on "My Book" (Partition 1 of WD 800BB External): The device is busy
Details: Cannot unmount because file system on device is busy Assuming the device had died - it's about 5 years old - I bought a 160G Samsung S-Series drive - my but they do look neat! Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to have solved my problem. I plugged the new drive in, and it happily appeared on my desktop. It seemed a good idea at the time, but I then started to format the drive - using the default option of FAT. All went well at first, but then the format process stopped.
My new Samsung drive now seems to be operating pretty much as the WD device, I can't copy to the drive, and attempts to unmount it generate a response similar to what's happening with the WD drive. Currently, although plugged in, I can't see the drive on my desktop, although it appears under Places. However, when I try to mount the drive, I get the message: Unable to mount SAMSUNG A job is pending on /dev/sdb1

How can I assign a directory to a specific partition (another hard drive)?How would someone move / home/ username/music to another drive or partition? But do so in a way that it no longer writes MP3's (or FLAC) files in the original directory of the root drive?

Using Ubuntu Server maverick here - after altering /etc/network/interfaces to use a static ip and checking /etc/resolv.conf (no alteration needed) no network services were working at all. Here are the contents of interfaces:

I was fairly certain that this was verbatim from my previous server which is no longer attached to the network. After hours of fooling around with no success I changed the address to 192.168.1.99 and it worked perfectly. So my question is: why? My old server used 100. Could the router refuse to give a new server the same address or something like that since that address had been taken in the past?

Okay, I have been all over the web... all over JustLinux and pretty much spent several months trying to find one simple answer. How do I easily map two applications to my trackball?I have a Kensington Expert Mouse Model K64325. It has a scroll wheel, and 4 mouse buttons. I have used xev to figure out which button is which. The upper left = 2 and the upper right = 8. I want the upper left to open Firefox when I click it. I want the upper right to open REALBasic when I click it.I know this can be done (really easily too!) in Windows. I want to do it in Linux. Especially since I have several systems like this. Also I can then take what I learn from my own experience and start mapping OTHER people that are total Linux newbs, mice for them.
The mouse works great all I want are the two feature/options I just listed and I cannot find a single answer anywhere on the web that seem to address my question. SO I am hoping someone here will have a laymans answer.

I have some beginner questions about DHCP, Avahi, and configuring a small home LAN.Suppose I have a dynamic IP address assigned by my ISP, which requires DHCP be enabled in my dsl modem/router/"firewall" [sic]. Suppose for simplicity I have just one PC behind the dsl modem.I think "enabling DHCP" in the modem/router means that a DHCP client runs on the router, which communicates with a DHCP server run by my ISP when I boot up a PC on my LAN. Is that guess correct? Can I get DHCP to assign a particular local IP, say 192.168.1.10 (which is not the one taken by the router--- for this discussion, let's say that is 192.168.1.0) to my PC each time I boot it up?
Now suppose I want to build a stand-alone firewall, so that my LAN will have the firewall and the first PC behind the modem, with the first PC virtually behind the firewall. By default, I think these will both have DHCP clients running which I need to configure properly. The firewall should also have a DHCP server which should control how local IP addresses are assigned, correct? I should try to arrange that the LAN has only DHCP server, only one NTP timeserver, only one DNS nameserver, correct?My first PC seems to have installed an autorun client called Avahi, which performs DNS multicast services and incorporates something called zeroconf which seems to have something to do with remote desktops, which I don't need and which is a potential security hazard. But it seems that Avahi is an intrinsic part of the KDE desktop and cannot be removed. Just want to be sure that Avahi can coexist comfortably with dhcp3-client, which is also installed on that PC. They perform different tasks, correct?If I can get the stand-alone firewall to work, I know I need to turn off the commercial firewall in the dslmodem/router/firewall device. Should I purchase a bridge and try to turn off the routing function also?

I have 2 monitors. I'm using the Nvidia driver in Twinview Mode on the right side. I can move the cursor from one monitor to the next and I can drag applications between the two. I have multiple activities. And the second monitor selected one of those other activities as the background. I'm not sure how this was chosen, or if I have a choice. Anyone know? Do activities affect what is displayed in a dual monitor setting? As I toggle through the activities, the two monitors change, but never to the same one.
When I open an application, it's a guessing game which monitor it appears on. Can I control that?
I know if one clicks the top left corner of an application they can send it "To Desktop" ("all", "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", etc). If I could assign "Desktop 1" to monitor 1, and "Desktop 2" to monitor 2, I could then use the "To Desktop".
At a minimum, how does one control where applications open in a dual monitor setting?

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

Basically I have changed the default mount names for my windows partitions in Ubuntu. They were /media/data, /media/data_,/media/system reserved, etc
They are now /media/C,D,E,F
I have rebooted etc after the changes and when I look in Gnome places or in Nautilis the OLD names still show up.
HOWEVER when I run Nautilis as the root user all the CORRECT NEW names appear.
ALSO - if I create a BRAND NEW user account and login as that all the OLD names show up?
So this is something to do with ROOT access or whatever that is not allowing the names to be updated somehow?!?!?
As I use these disks in windows (obviously) I DONT want to change their labels. and basically this SHOULDN'T be the solution everyone is suggesting!
Root can generate the new names automatically based on the mount point in FSTAB why can't other users - and HOW to do do it MANUALLY?

i m running suse 11.2 on a generic desktop machine with two external usb hard disks for data storage. when i restart, the names of the names of the usb disks get changed in /media from exampledisk to exampledisk-1, another boot up and i get exampledisk-2. the data is no longer in exampledisk, but in exampledisk-1 or exampledisk-2.

I have Fedora 14 installed on my main internal drive. I am setting up a Raid5 and torture testing it. I added two eSata ports to my machine. When a drive is installed in that eSata port and the machine then booted up the device name (e.g. /dev/sdc) is inserted in the middle of my Raid devices. And that is just one example of how the device names can change.I did a search on 'static device names' but I saw nothing directly related to Raid. What I did see were suggestions to create udev rules based on UUID. But that was for single disks, not Raid, where each drive/partition in the raid array appears to have the same UUID.I'm surprised this does not come up in the various Raid howtos because it is impossible to keep a Raid array intact without solving this problem unless the machine is never touched thereafter.

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

I'm having trouble with Ubuntu 10.10 and stable device names. When I installed Ubuntu, the root drive was the only one in the machine; it obviously got /dev/sda.
After the base installation, I installed three additional 2TB drives to make RAID-5 array. Ubuntu renamed the root drive to /dev/sdd. While annoying I lived with it.
After creating a single partition set to "Linux raid autodetect" on each drive, I created the RAID-5 array:

All was going well until a reboot. When rebooting Ubuntu decided to make the root drive /dev/sda this time and now mdadm --detail /dev/md0 reports:

I am using Asus eee PC model 1001P and I am running ubuntu netbook remix on it. I have a 160 GB hard drive. When I was installing ubuntu I assigned only 50 GB for it, thinking that I will use the remaining partition for windows. But right now after using UNR, I don't want to use windows at all. Is it possible that I can assign the remaining 100 GB unassigned partition back to Ubuntu without reinstalling the whole operating system again?

I'd like to make a video of an ogg file going through an oscilloscope as it's playing. audacity (with enough zoom so that the wave can be seen as a wave and not a blur) could make it but it's too heavy and the screen capture software doesn't get the screen refreshes.... so I'd like to know if there's something that could provide more accuracy.

I have many disks and volumes in my system. Some of disks IDE, some SATA.
Volumes on SATA disks cause me problems - I have them listed in etc/fstab, but on every boot, they have different name:
/dev/sdd* becomes /dev/sdb*
/dev/sde* becomes /dev/sdc*
etc. on every boot.
1) Why is this happening?
2) How can I prevent it?
3) If I can't, is there a workaround?

would do the job, however netstat produces quite much output:

I built a Raid5 volume with 3 SATA II hard disk drives. Further I have a system disk conected through IDE. During the first setup the IDE disk becomes sda, the SATA II disk sd[bcd] respectively. Now, sometimes the device names change after reboot - why ever... E.g. one of the raid5 disk become sda and so I got an error message during the boot procedure regarding the raid set. Curious, when the system is up and I stop and restart the Raid5 volume it comes up and runs fine. Because I'm currently at work I can't post any more detailed config files at the moment.

I am building a custom RedHat+<our-software> installer iso for our own appliance. I am using Red Hat 5.4. The appliances has two on-board eth interfaces. On the back panel of the appliance, these ports are marked 1 and 2. When I install RH, I find the device names assigned such as eth0/eth1 are arbitrary. I understand this is to be expected with kernels 2.6+. Most of our customers connect their eth cables to the port marked 1 on the back and assume they should configure eth0 to make the device reachable. However, sometimes port 1 gets assigned "eth1". This is not a blocking issue, but its going to confuse our customers and we wanted to make it easier on them.
From reading online discussion boards, I know HOW to switch the assignment of the eth names. However, what I am do not know is whether I need to switch them at all. So I have two questions
1) Is there anyway for me to tell which eth mac corresponds to which port on the back? Since they are soldered on the motherboard and not movable, I would think there would be some way to figure out that x mac address corresponds to the upper port (marked '1' etc).
2) Is there a way to tell this by running a linux command? We need to do this automatically so I need to be able to figure it out at install time from the kickstart post-install or similar.

I have a server wich is connected to an iSCSI storage and gets harddisks from this storage. Sometimes I have to add new disks to this server. Everytime I add a disk and make an /etc/init.d/iscsi restart on the server the disks don't have the same device name as before the iscsi restart.
It should be possible to gave the disks persistent names using udev rules. Now I tried to create different rules in "/etc/udev/rules.d/99-static-iscsi-names.rules" e.g.
# /dev/sdc
KERNEL=="sd*", BUS=="scsi", PROGRAM=="/sbin/scsi_id -g -s %p",RESULT=="360a98000503355344c4a576864467877" NAME=="sdc%n"
In "/etc/rc.local" I added "/sbin/start_udev" and in "/etc/scsi_id.config" I added the line "vendor="NETAPP",model="LUN",options=-g"

I've just put together a 10.04 server using a GA-D525TUD atom board. I've installed gnome desktop too. I'm trying to get 4 sata drives to go into standby, but hdparm seems to be ignoring the settings. If i issue hdparm -y /dev/sdx the drive duly goes into standby and stays in standby until accessed. I've put entries in rc.local along with the hdparm.conf settings, but still no joy.

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.4 and was trying to use a small bash script for which I need hcitool to return the device name. The problem is that hcitool returns nothing when I query for the device's name using the address. The address was found using hcitool's scan option, so I know the device is responding. Also, I can pair the laptop with the phone using gnome's bluetooth application, what I can't do is get hcitool to return the device's name. I've tried scanning for other devices and querying for their names, and I tried using another laptop with Ubuntu installed to get the phone's name, in all cases hcitool returns the device's name, only when issuing the query from my mac to this specific phone does hcitool fail.

After getting the list of devices that were found I grab my phone's address and ask for the name.

As you can see, when scanning for devices I get both the address and the name, but when asking for the name I get nothing, and I really needed to use the hcitool name <address> command for the script as it would make things easier.
