OpenSUSE Hardware :: Rebuilding Array (Intel Matrix) - Device Failure And Disconnected One Of The Drives

I got opensuse 11 running on a dedicated HDD and got another 4 HDDs created as RAID 10 via the Intel Matrix RAID Controller of the ICH10 southbridge. I simulated a device failure and disconnected one of the drives and during POST the controller simply says that I need to rebuilt the array from the OS. So how am I supposed to do that since there were no usable raid utitlities for openSuSe delivered out of the box.

I have a 9x320G RAID5 array that I am migrating over to a 3x1.5T RAID5 array.Intermittently, a drive would drop out of the older array and it would automatically start rebuilding. I thought it was a bad cable or controller somewhere, so when I bought the three new drives, I bought a new controller for them all, too. I'm running both arrays side by side until I'm happy the new hardware is stable (one drive was DOA). Then I noticed one morning that both arrays were rebuilding themselves. This was in /var/log/messages:

I had run out of space on a 30GB raid1 partition so I rebuilt it as I had three 30GB partitions on a pair of 120GB drives. I stopped the array and used gparted to create a single 120GB partition on one of the disks. I then copied the data from all three partitions on the other drive onto this newly cleared space, before zapping that too. So I now had two drives with identical single partitions, one of which had all my data and lots of space. I used mdadm to create a new array from the two disks, which looked good. It immediately started to resync the data onto the second drive. However, when I tried to mount the new array this is what I get:

This isn't exactly Ubuntu specific, but I do plan on using Ubuntu to try to recover this array. I've been using a Freedom9 freestor 4020 for the past few years and other than it totally blowing up last week it's been pretty good. I was on vacation for almost a month and a few days after I returned my NAS (freestor 4020) started acting up. I tried a few power cycles, but was dismayed to see that I could not log in via browser or SSH (SMB shares were no accessible either). A drive failure light is supposed to illuminate if a disk fails, but no dice.
I plugged all 4 drives from the NAS into an Ubutnu 9.04 Desktop system and one started throwing out all kinds of errors. Thinking that it would be a simple rebuild, I went to my local computer shop and picked up another 500GB drive (same manufacturer/part #), replaced the failed drive, and powered up the NAS again... Nothing. I left it for 12 hours then powered it down, plugged the new drive into my linux box again to see if it rebuilt... the drive was a virgin. What gives me hope that I can still recover the data is Ubuntu sees "RAID components" on the drives (through disk manager and parted), and gives me the option of initializing the array.
My plan of attack is to plug all of the drives back into my Ubuntu box, initialize the RAID array via LVM, and pretty much hope for the best. The data is not uber critical, but it would be a pretty big pain in the behind to rip/upload all the software that was on it (ripping hundreds of DVD/CD images is not fun). If my Ubuntu box can make sense of this newly initialized/mounted RAID set... I'll plug in a 2TB external drive, copy the data over, and rebuild the NAS from scratch, then put my data back on (perhaps a different unit, or something running openfiler).

I've got a mailserver set up in a raid1 array.I shut down the system to install a CD-ROM drive but forgot to change the master/slave settings (I know, don'tt say anything) and didn't realize it before Centos started booting up, so it booted the hdc drive from the array.I rebuilt the array using mdadm without any apparant issues but on subsequent bootup, I get the following error :

There doesn't seem to be any side effects to this but since that didn't happen prior, I figure there's probably something I didn't do properly since I'm fairly new to the linux world.My raid array was originally set up by the Centos instal software and is set up like this :
hda1 + hdc1 = md0 (boot)
Hda3 + hdc3 = md2 (/)
The other partitions are of the same size on each drive and are swap partitions.
PS : The drive is SMART capable and no errors appear during a self-test.
edit : Clonezilla also fails to boot properly although I don't know if its due to a software raid array in the first place or the errors in the filesystem. When only one drive was detected because of the jumpers, it booted properly.

Ubuntu 2.6.31 - 14 generic
Problem began with RAID0 failure using 2 WD FALS1001 HDDs. I was unable to boot so I replaced the drives with 2 new FALS1001. Installed Win7 64 Ult, installed/updated all drivers/OS and had the same problem with one of the RAID drives again. Usually blue screens with Kernel_stack_inpage_error. I have Intel Matrix Storage version 8.5.0.1030 and can usually boot back into windows even when one disk out of the array shows unknown error (0) and reset the disk to normal. Now it seems to be progressing worse and hit or miss, I can get Windows to load 1 time out of 20 posts.
Sometimes the array shows normal, sometimes failed, sometimes unknown error (0) and other times, everything shows normal and healthy and attempts to boot windows but has read errors or unable to find OS errors. I simply want to access my data via Ubuntu so I can back it up and wipe the drives for re-installation. I see that Intel shows support for Linux but I'm lost as to what I need to do next. Intel link: [URL]. I currently see one of my drives listed in Ubuntu as a RAID component and the other is listed as a hard drive with unknown information. I have loaded mdadm but I'm unfamiliar with how to use it.

I've been using Slackware 13.0 32-bit because of a problem supporting RAID 0 metadata for Intel Matrix Storage Manager. I would like to move to 64-bit with Slackware 13.1 but I can't see any way to use a 64-bit kernel with my RAID setup. Because the "mdadm" in Slackware does not support the "-e imsm" option to read Intel Matrix Storage Manager Metadata I have been using "dmraid". Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding a way to make "dmraid" (a 32-bit application) work on 64-bit Linux. It appears that "dmraid" may be unsupported now, and I can't find a good place to get current source to compile on a 64-bit system. Essentially "dmraid" is only a program to interpret metadata and then configure the standard Linux device mapper to set up the required mirror or stripe mapping. So, it actually does not have to interact directly with the kernel.
I believe it only issues I/O requests to read disks and configure "dm" devices. So far I have not had to rebuild "dmriad" since Slackware 10. I don't know if 32-bit libraries are an option, or if those can be added to an initrd image (required to use dmraid before booting). People claim that "mdadm" will work with Intel Matrix Storage RAID 0 but I have never found any detailed information about how to do that. When I've tried the few examples I've run across on Slackware I just get an error that the "imsm" metadata format is not supported. I have not been able to locate a site to browse Slackware packages. I was hoping to find "dmraid" in the 64-bit packages. I think "dmraid" was at one time in Slackware but perhaps not any longer.

I recently bought a new system that has an Intel Matrix Storage Manager "RAID controller" (ICH10R/DO) on it. I'm a bit baffled over what this really is. I see at [URL] that this controller is supported by the Linux dmraid and mdadm commands and supported in the 2.6 kernel version for quite a while. This looks as though it is some sort of convergence of a brain-dead hardware chipset that requires software installed in the OS to manage it. Kind of reminds me of the wimpy Windows modems of the past. How I deployed. I set up two Seagate ST31500541AS disks as a mirrored pair in the hardware controller interface (CTL-I setup after POST).
I installed Fedora 12 in the usual fashion, though was confusing considering I expected a single "RAID device" to be seen by Anaconda. I went ahead and set up the two native /dev/sda and /dev/sdb as a mirrored RAID device on installation (mdadm under the cover). Recently, Palimpsest is insisting that I have a disk problem with "Disk has many bad sectors" error on /dev/sdb. When I run "dmraid -s" it tells me that the meta device is OK and I see no hardware errors in the messages log. I'm not having kernel panics as others seem to have had on RHEL 5.x.

I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 to my raid 1+0 array. Install just sees four different hd:s
main-0
main-1
storage-0
storage-1
There is not showing any size or anything. I have set two raid arrays: main and storage, both with 4-hard-driver (raid10). Storage array is partitioned to 1TB and 400GB partitions, 400GB partition is where i want to install ubuntu. Main array has windows already. Where to go next?

I'm hoping, now that I've recovered my partition tables, how to rebuild my LVM volume group. The trouble is that one of the volumes lost its partition table, and after rebuilding the table, LVM can no longer identify the drive. I'm trying to rebuild the 'fileserver' volume group.
pvscan produces the following:

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

2 weeks ago, my power supply blew, during close-down. My system is a SUSE Linux 10.1 and openSUSE 11.1 dual boot with WInXP (for those family things). After replacing the power supply my system had no root partition, or loader. It said something like "Invalid Partition table". Grub had gone! So following swerdna's "How to Boot into openSUSE" tutorial I used the openSuse 11.1 install CD rescue option to get to the command prompt, su'd, went to grub and followed the stated commands. So far so good.
However the new grub entry openSUSE (Failsafe) has a problem. It starts to boot in the usual way, but I note fatal Module errors in the boot log relating to sata_nv not found, ide_pci_generic not found etc, and Fatal error inserting edd (/lib/modules/2.6.27.39-0.2-default/kernel/driver/firmware/edd.ko): no such device but uses udev as boot source until Waiting for device /dev/disk/by-id/ataST3120827AS-4M60PX7V-part6...... and then it exits to /bin/sh.

openSUSE Install/Boot/Login: I am looking for a Linux distribution with a working LTSP OOTB. LTSP-openSUSE / KIWI-LTSP looks interesting (http://en.opensuse.org/LTSP).

Since May 12,2009. Our system lifekeeper has the error log "lifekeeper error: DEVICE FAILURE on SCSI device '/dev/add'", but it ran normally. Until last week, it failover to the standby server. The disk still running, the error still come out.

So my aim is to install openSUSEx64 11.3 onto my Macbook; but for whatever reason, upon boot-up, the system won't recognize the USB thumb drive with the expanded image of openSUSE on it. I followed steps in Terminal to expand the image onto the said USB stick and know it worked properly because Terminal said "Process Completed." Do I need a special type of USB thumb drive or am I missing something? I am using a late-2009 Macbook. By the way, these were the steps used to prep the USB thumb stick:
1. Open a Terminal (under Utilities)
2. Run diskutil list to get the current list of devices
3. Insert your flash media
4. Run diskutil list again and determine the device node assigned to your flash media (e.g. /dev/disk2)
5. Run diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskN
6. Execute sudo dd if=/path/to/downloaded.img of=/dev/diskN bs=1m
7. Run diskutil eject /dev/diskN and remove your flash media when the command completes

I ran Ubuntu desktop for a while then installed Ubuntu Server 10.4. I went to setup my linux box and found that the OS drive had finally died. It was an extremely old WD raptor drive in a hot box full of drives so it was really only a matter of time before it just quit on me. Normally this wouldn't be such a big deal however I had just recently constructed an md RAID5 array of 3 1TB disks to act as an NFS mount for basically all of my important files. Maybe 2-3 weeks before the failure I had finished moving all of my most important stuff onto that array. Now I know that the array is intact. All the required data is sitting on those disks. Since only the OS level disk failed on me I should be able to get a new disk in there, reinstall ubuntu and then rebuild that array. how exactly do I go about doing that with mdadm? Do I create the array from the /dev character devices like when I initially built the array?

I have 4 WD10EARS drives running in a RAID 5 array using MDADM.Yesterday my OS Drive failed. I have replaced this and installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.04 on it. then installed MDADM, and rebooted the machine, hoping that it would automatically rebuild the array.It hasnt, when i look at the array using Disk Utility, it says that the array is not running. If i try to start the array it says :Error assembling array: mdadm exited with exit code 1: mdadm: failed to RUN_ARRAY /dev/md0: Input/output error
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.I have tried MDADM --assemble --scan and it gives this output:mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 2 drives - not enough to start the array.I know that there are 4 drives present as they are all showing, but it is only using 2 of them.I also ran MDADM -- detail /dev.md0 which gave:

I am able to retrieve data off a RAID5 array. History: My system disk was partitioned to 10 gigs and over time was filled up to 100% locking me out of the GUI (I am a casual user). Now that I am relegated to the CLI, I need help to see if rebuilding the array and keeping the data intact is possible. I have three sata hard drives in the array and now it appears during the boot process, it fails and can't find the array.
I did the following:
mdadm -D /dev/md0
and here's some of the output:
State: active, FAILED, Not Started
And out of three drives, it states that two have failed. I find this hard to believe as I have had no issues until my system disk was full. A coworker today helped me find some files to delete and now have the system disk down to 97%/8.8 gigs yet I can still not enter the GUI due to the array issue.
Out of the three discs, here are the results (taken also from mdadm -D /dev/md0):

Sorry for providing so little, but I am in (Repair Filesystem) mode and only have local access to the machine meaning all outputs will need to be retyped.

I am having a RAID5 with a spare(total 4 disk).then the steps which lead me to a problem:
1. i was doing I/O on the array.
2. i pulled out a drive manually. So the spare drive took care of the failed one and started rebuilding. then
3. in the, mean time i pulled out the power plug of my NAS box.
4. After power up i saw my array was not active(by -D command option of mdadm). then
5. i executed: mdadm --assemble --scan /dev/md0 it gave me
I checked into the linux source and found that bd_claim is a function inside fs/block_dev.c and it failing due to which lock_rdev function (calling bd_claim in md.c) is failing and we are not able to start the array.I don't know why my RAID is not live after power on.
Plese help atleast can i save my data?

I want to make a RAID5 array with 4 2TB hard drives. One of the drives is full of data so I will need to start with a 3 disks and then once I copy the data from the 4th onto the array, I will then add the 4th drive. This will be my first experience with RAID. I've spent a few hours searching for info but most of what I have found is a bit over my head.

Just got 3 extra drives for my machine.
2x160Gb sata
1x 165Gb sata
How do i create a raid0 array of these drives? On each drive i have got a partition whose size is 160GB and formatted to type fd (Raid Autodetect) i have tried the following:

I got my system up and running with the Grub installed on my primary hard drive. I have not installed 2 additional drives. I would like to combine the 2 additional drives into a RAID 1 array. I can only find tutorials on how to do this during initial install. I cannot find one that tell me how to do it after the install. Is there a way?

I am trying to use 3 3TB Western Digital drives in a raid 5 software array. The trouble seems to be that the array is created with only 1.5 TB of capacity, rather then the expected 6 TB.
Here are the commands and output:
$ sudo dmraid -f isw -C BackupFull6 --type 5 --disk /dev/sde,/dev/sdf,/dev/sdg --size=5589G
Create a RAID set with ISW metadata format
RAID name: BackupFull6
RAID type: RAID5
RAID size: 5589G (11720982528 blocks)

I have a CentOS 5 based Linux system with a 3Ware 9550SU RAID card and four 500GB drives set up in a RAID5 array (3 in the array and 1 hot spare).
I want to 'replace' these drives with four 2TB drives without data loss. My server case has a total of 8 drive bays all hot-swap and all attached to the RAID card, this means I have four empty drive bays on the RAID card.
One thought is to put the four new 2TB drives in the empty drive bays, configure them in a new RAID5 array. Then the question is now to I "mirror" the original RAID5 array over to the new one?
This is just a thought though, I am not sure it will work. In short my question to this forum is how do I accomplish this upgrade?.

I have behringer UCA202 usb card, after plug to usb, it just works , I have only small problem with alsamixer, which still shows by default my integrated HDA Intel, I could switch it by F6 or by alsamixer -c 1no problem, but I expect that default card is now plugged "USB audio", so why alsamixer recognize default audio device as HDA intel and not a USB Audio ?anyone who has two or more sound cards with the same issue ?
