I recently installed 11.3 from DVD Am using Ubuntu Lucid Grub2 bootloader as I have several OS's Updated Grub so that the new kernel version 4 would boot but it boots to a command line... What has happened to my desktop?

my friend updated kernel today and it "stopped working" and I was asked to fix it he is new to linux, and I don't have physical access to that notebook from what I know main problems are:
1. no network devices exist (except for loopback)
2. sound card driver is missing (nVidia MCP79)
3. in grub menu after choosing new kernel uname -r sais the old one's version
wifi card is atheros, but I don't know specific model.
On a fresh install 11.3 gnome I am getting an update freeze on the kernel-desktop-2.6.34.7-0.5.1. This is on the initial software update after first log in on fresh system. It downloads the package and freezes during the update and causes all my other updates to reload. I went to init 3 and ran zypper update and saw that it made it to 91% and then stopped. After that I usually get a corrupted install.

I lost everything possible on the graphical desktop as well as a log in screen for Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). Since then I did a few things:1. apt-get install ubuntu-desktop2. apt-get install kubuntu-desktop3. apt-get remove kubuntu-desktopAfter all this, I still have the login screen for Kubuntu. But I don't want that. I want to get back to the Ubuntu login screen, and the orange colored desktop. Right now -- after I log in -- I only have a terminal to use. And I have the blue background of Kubuntu. What do I need to do to get rid of the Kubuntu graphics and back to my original login screen, plus the Ubuntu (karmic) graphics and toolbars / menus?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have updated 11.3 to 11.4 with downloaded iso (64 bits). I have a ATI hd2400 card that in 11.3 had no additional or other drivers. Now after install of 11.4 the systems reboots in the splasscreen everytime I am now in failsafe mode to get graphical.

after a upgrade via DVD (11.3 -> 11.4) which shows no errors, i can't start the Xserver. During Startup in Grub i have an graphical enviroment.

I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get SELinux working in OpenSUSE 11.2. So far I can get to runlevel 3 with enforcing=0. Before I start tinkering with audit2allow, The 11.2 repository gives me these policy rpms:

But that version of policy has some issues in OpenSUSE:
1) failure to allow the graphical desktop to load (even with enforcing=0) . The following message appears in the console during boot:
** (gdm:1073): WARNING **: Couldn't connect to system bus: A SELinux policy prevents this sender from sending this message to this recipient (rejected message had sender "(unset)" interface "org.freedesktop.DBus" member "Hello" erro name "(unset)" destination "org.freedesktop.DBus") startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/sbin/gdm: 1 Since enforcing is off, I'm surprised to see a message like that. SELinux shouldn't be preventing anything, so I don't see how modifying policy will solve that. Ideas?
2) Attempting to boot to runlevel 5 with kernel parms "security=selinux selinux=1 enforcing=0", I'm dropped off in runlevel 3 instead. I'm getting a couple of pages of AVC errors after boot (see below). I've tried several other versions of the policy without luck:
- the version included in Fedora 12 (refpolicy-2.2009117
- the latest release from Tresys
- the latest from the repository at Tresys

I am having with my openSUSE upgrade.
I followed the upgrade directions, found here, precisely. However, I am still experiencing some unusual problems, some I think I have resolved, but others are leaving me puzzled.
Before I get to far into this, my working knowledge of *NIX platforms is decent, but I am no where close to expert or advanced.
Problem 1 - KDE Profiles (resolved)
The first problem I experienced was that my KDE profiles were all screwed up, buttons would not work, desktop icons were missing, applications would not start or would show horrid graphics, and the list goes on. Having run through a similar problem with FreeBSD, I decided to simply move my ~/.kde4 to ~/.kde4.orig and then do a forced reinstall of KDE4. This seems to have resolved the issue, I just have to recreate my profile, which should be relatively simple.
Problem 2 - Sound Driver
Shortly after my upgrade, I did have sound, but I had lost control of the volume. This is somewhat expected as with each Kernel update of Linux, I found I had to reinstall the sound drivers, Creative X-Fi. This never presented a problem as it was a 30 second process and very simple to perform (there were three commands, four if you include 'su -'). This time, I ended up running into an error, seen below:

Problem 3 - VMware
Similar to the sound card, each time a new Kernel patch is applied, I have to recompile VMware Workstation 6.5 for it to work again. This is even simpler than the sound drivers as all I do is start VMware and it automatically recompiles. Now, when I go to start it, I receive the two following errors:

Problem 4 - Kernel...
The previous two problems seem to be related to some underlying kernel issue that I have yet to be able to resolve. I have barely been able to change the error messages. So far I have forced a reinstall of almost everything kernel related that was already installed, plus I installed quite a few *-devel packages. I reinstalled 'make' and 'gcc' for good measure, but I am not getting anywhere.
This is a new, two days since release 11.2 install on a freshly formatted drive. I lost the KDE 4.3 default semitransparent Desktop Window with all the desktop folders. I believe what happened was when the mouse went across this window, the window side pop out with the X at the bottom appeared, the mouse pointer continued onto the "old style" desktop far away from this pop out and I clicked on blank "old style" desktop. This window appears to have treated this as selecting the X in the pop out, which I probably went over without clicking on my way past it and this window is gone. I have changed to "folder view" since I can't figure out how to restore this window for the "default desktop view".
How do you restore the semitransparent default Desktop Window when its no longer in its own "view"? The jury is still out on the obviously improved, but still not ready for prime-time KDE 4.3. I feel like a Microsoft OS user being forced into using a "new" burdensome/buggy interface I don't want or need at all. Even the KDE 4.3 manual admits some things (only some?) will not work as expected. The KDE 3.5 interface did everything I "needed" quickly and without problems. I've already had enough abuse from MS, please stop emulating them.
my own fault really,just dived in to do the update and did not back everything up. I have three disks in my machine one winxp for games , one was suse 11.2 and added lately one for ubuntu. added the ubuntu disk installed and this replaced the grub loader, still gave me all my previous options but does not look as nice as the suse one.so I did update on 11.2 and thought would give me the nice one back and still have all my entries. Er no. entry for win and 11.3 but no ubuntu.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a system running openSUSE 11.2 with Desktop and XEN kernel, as well as Windows 7 (not by choice though...). I have noticed a strange time issue, with Windows 7 and the desktop kernel the time is correct (like for example now: 1:32 PM) but in the XEN kernel it is ahead several hours (6:32 PM). If it was an issue between openSUSE and windows then I would think that it is a problem with the system clock but I don't know what would cause a time issue between kernels like that.

I've found some past threads like this link and this other link, and some other google info, which suggest the only difference would be the io scheduler. Also, I see the default grub choice is "Desktop" and not "Default", so I take this as a suggestion to prefer one over the other.
However, my broadcom 4312 wireless only works on the "default" and not on the "desktop" kernel, so I guess there must be other differences. I just want to evaluate which one is the less long-term risk option to go.
I think I made one tweak too far and as a result have lost my desktop - no top panel, launcher just a blank screen with my desktop background. I've created a new user and everything is fine under that account so I don't think it is terminal. which files I should delete/replace to restore the desktop back to it's default settings? I've deleted the .gnome2, .gconf and .gconfd folders but that has not solved the problem.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI was working on something important in 11.2 and did a "zypper up" in the terminal in the background. I wasn't paying that much attention to it, I believe it was an update to 11.3. After returning to the computer after about one hour the windows were behaving strangely and the machine wasn't very responsive. I decided to reboot. Now at login I have neither mouse nor keyboard. I have switched the keyboard to PS2 model, no difference. If someone could help me with booting to run level 3 from the grub menu perhaps I could change some settings there to make everything work. I really regret doing the update. It would be very important for me to be able to get back in to machine with spending as little time as possible on this. Could I reverse the update? This machine is very important for me and my family for their daily communication, but currently I have very little time to fix this. My quick fix was to install Kubuntu 10.10 so I could resume working, but I would really need to get back in to 11.2.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed the new 2.6.34.4-0.1 security update earlier today. Now, the login screen no longer responds to my keyboard. In particular, I cannot type my password to log in. If I reboot into failsafe mode, the keyboard works and I can log in.

I'm having an issue when I'm trying to install SuSE linux onto my desktop.I go through all the steps and everything looks okay, but when it starts to install the packages, I get an error message that basically says:kernel.desktop - unable to install, exit status 127.I have a ATI X1950 video card in the computer, as well as a AMD 64 FX CPU in the system.

After update X uses 90% CPU to scroll down a page in FF, OOo or even in text editor, either with KWin and KWin4. With KWin4 desktop effects can't be enabled in system config.

Rolling back to kernel 2.6.27.37 fixed the problem.
After the lastest update 11.2 also suffers from the problem already reported here for 11.3. I am lucky to have two linux partitions and was actualy able to boot into the second partition. From this second system I could repair this or at least a quick-n-dirty fallback to be able to boot.
1. Copied the 2.6.21.12-0.2 version for initrd and vmlinuz from /boot to /first_partition/boot
2. Copied the /first_partition/boot/grub/menu.lst.old to /first_partition/boot/grub/menu.lst to reset to the old menu.
After boot the system could start but modules were not loaded.
3. copied /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop from the second partition to the first.
4. The same for /usr/src/linux-2.6.31.12-0.2*
Now my system will boot and start modules such as network and sound. Still, was this correct? I don't know for sure if there are some issues that I haven't discovered yet. And obviously, what will happen with future updates (either kernel or other)?
I'm trying to figure out how to update the kernel in 11.4 from the repository. I have the stable repo added, but i'm not sure how to get it updated.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter migrating from openSUSE-11.1 to openSUSE-11.2 together with a few further online updates including a kernel upgrade to 2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop, my system started freezing a couple of times for two days.
I made up my mind googling for "linux freeze", found a hint saying, that 2.6.31.8 causes trouble, fell back to 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop, and voila: the problem is gone. What a relief!

I would have bet money that the machine wouldn't boot after this, but it in fact did (whew). Since the kmp modules were not updated with this new kernel, I have merely suspicions....any one have the real reason for these warnings? Same type of warnings occured (thou I didn't copy the output) when I installed the ATI prop driver rpm. everything seems to work as normal so far, but it was so very different than many previous updates that I'm a bit leery.
A few upgrades ago, I had also a desktop-kernel installed. I tried starting with the standard and the desktop kernel, but could not see a difference. Why this desktop-kernel and what's the difference with the standard kernel?

I just updated to new 2.6.38-18 kernel and headers. Now the latest Ati 11.2 driver wont install completely and I cannot get any X. So I removed the ati drivers to use the opensuse drivers but kde wont start now (dont know what the issue is.. maybe someone can poitn me out the the correct log file to look for errors).. I am using gnome now. Anyone knows how to get ground this and install ati drivers.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading kernel, system (AMD 780G)refuses to start in graphic mode. Computer services running fine, but there's nothing or some trash on screen when X started. And no way how to get out except restarting or shutting down from remote computer.
Reinstalling, unistalling ATI driver doesn't help. Also manipulations with xorg.conf (install, safe etc previous file versions)doesn't help.
Sax2 detects videocard correctly, but result is same regardless which resolution@Hz is specified.

the normal auto updater ran and installed a new kernel for security vulnerability and it was a .pae version. So after restart I now have 4 options on the boot screen, which includes the normal "SUSE" and a 'SUSE pae" version. defaulted to the new pae version and booted up. I got the video definition not found and had to enter a value manually. The system comes up but not into x system. It gives me a login prompt and startx yields a "terminal not found." Ran SaX2 and startx now works. Unfortunately my KDE desktop is messed up now. There are none of the normal "taskbar" at boot up started processes there. So what should I have done? how do I get my system back to normal and roll out the new kernel and all these changes?
