Ubuntu :: Root Disk Check Failed - Cannot Boot 10.10

I applying changes through update manager in ubuntu 10.04 then my computer froze. So I had to restart it manually.
Now I can't boot ubuntu normal or recovery mode.I get an error message saying 'the disk drive / is not ready yet or blah blah'.I don't have a livecd to fix it this with... but here is my 'cat /etc/fstab' relevant output
/host/ubuntu/disks/root.disk / ext4 loop,errors=remount-ro 0 1

This is a Natty system. I ran update manager to update to the latest releases for Natty, and it crashed. I ran it again and it told me it could only do a partial upgrade, and that I should do apt-get install -f. I did that, but apt-get told me the system was locked by another program. Not to worry I thought, I'll just reboot. So I did that, and I think Update-Manager got a lot further through the process than I thought, because my system is borked. It'll boot into Gnome, but when booting up the Boot Screen no longer shows the pretty Ubuntu Logo, but rather a line of text that says "Ubuntu 11.04".
When it gets into Gnome the keyboard and mouse more or less don't work (although the keyboard based Fn+9 and Fn+10 brightness control still works) and there is no desktop background. After about 30 seconds something crashes but I can't click on it to find out what. Going into the recovery console doesn't help either. The latest Kernel (2.6.38-7) stops moving forwards after "Begin:Running /scripts/init-bottom...done". has occurred for the second time. Luckily I still have the previous kernel, which gets to the same spot and then tells me:
"init: udevtrigger main process (390) terminated with status 1" and then "init: udevtrigger post-stop process (394) terminated with status 1".
I then get the message
"The disc drive for / is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery". S goes back to "Begin:Running /scripts/init-bottom...done" a second time, M brings up the message:
"Root filesystem check failed. A maintenance shell will now be started"
and then it asks for the root password and gives me a terminal. Everything seems to be there, but apt-get and dpkg both can't do anything as the filesystem is read only.

I'm very new to linux and running debian 4.0. On boot got an error:
I did a ghost image of drive before I do any more damage and when performing the ghost, ghost stated I need to run fsck. I created the image and noticed that a lot of folders were missing (bin, boot and others).
1. How do I run check disk from an boot disk?
2. Is there something else I should consider?

I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.
I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.
I will update the topic later..
My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.

Actually im using fedora 13 64 bit.the guy who left the company has configured raid.but when i open the OS its showing the error called /dev/sda3 disk failure is imminent.so i have findout that is our root partition.so could any one telme if i replace the sda3 harddisk with new one.will my raid configuration will be there or i have to do it from beginning. what if one disk get failed so how can i up my running os. currently im using hda,hdb,hdc,hdd,hde,hdf.my hda3 is showing disk failure. i think he has configure raid5.

I've been stupid, and used kleansweep, which deleted a load of files and in the process killed everything. When I boot I get "file system check failed". Then it gives me a command prompt. I really don't want to have to reinstall ubuntu as I have a lot of stuff installed on it.

I have updated from Karmic to Lucid not long ago, and everything went smooth and my system is been working like a charm for about a month. And it still does, with the only issue being that every time I restart my system, one of my partitions is checked.
My disk is split into 4 partitions:
sda1, NTFS for windows
sda2, ext4 for "/"
sda3, ext2 for /home
sda4, swap
Now what seems to happen is that sda3 is being marked as "not clean" on every shutdown, which makes me assume that is not being umounted at all.
I've been reading logs, commenting network drives out on fstab.. nothing does the trick.
I've booted into single mode and run e2fsck (which doesn't find anything wrong, and marks the FS as "clean") and then rebooted. The result is: if the FS wasn't mounted when I restart, then I get a clean boot once, but it is checked on the following one; if it was mounted then it is again checked at start-up.
Again, all points to the problem being that the FS is not cleanly umounted on shut-down.
I could not find any log with info of the processes killed and FS umounted at shut-down, so if anybody knows where to look, it could be a good start.

Every time I boot up I have to go through a disk check and then restart, how do I stop it from happening? When the disk checks happening I press escape and it usually says its deleted inode something because it has zero Dtime or some thing similar and also a paragraph of repeated lines saying something like all system files need alsa base.cnfg it will be ignored in a future release then the disk check completes and it restarts and is fine then, also sometimes it says dev/sda5 (my ubuntu partition) was not cleanly unmounted check forces. Is their a way to stop this happening as it ends up taking ages just to login.

I have a custom modified Ubuntu LiveCD. Sometimes when I boot from the CD, after it detects the HDDs it starts automatically scanning and repairing them even if the partitions are windows partitions. What do I need to modify to make it not scan/repair any partitions/drives at boot?

I had a a problem booting last night when my laptop battery came loose and caused a crash during boot.It ceased loading a daemon and I turned it off with the power switch, then I received the boot error,then i checked the linuxdrives directory and it was corrupt,I then, out of ignorance, ran wubi from within windows XP and said unistall believing that it would reinstall and fix itself.Thus you can see my green behaviour.I have been searching the threads and have tried many things but have had no success, I will suffer a great loss if I lose that load of Ubuntu as I have allot of work stored there, and in my Thunderbird accounts.

I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?

I installed ubuntu 10.04 from the CD (downloaded from ubuntu website), all worked very well. until today that I decided to run the software updater. It installed all the updates correctly, I restarted ok, but i experienced a mini locks, for example when i was with firefox, firefox had mini hangs for about 15 seconds then run normally. Then all OS got unstable, windows showing no thing, for example when i tried to restart using the button, it didnot do anything. Well i reset my computer and BOOM!, im stuck after Grub showing me this:

mount : mounting /sys on /root/sys failed : No such file or directory
mount : mounting /proc on /root/proc failed : No such file or directory

I'm able to reproduce this. I installed a fresh 10.4 again, then installed propietary drivers (nvidia), restart, all working flawless here, then updating all packages using the update-manager, restart, here not all working well (same sympthoms) so i decided to restart, then BOOM AGAIN.. I did the process 3 times and, the same, so I think something is BROKEN. So im able to reproduce it but don't know what the hell is causing it.

I am running out of disk space, so I decided to resize Windows 7 on my first hard drive, so I could add another ext4 partition to put data on. However, gparted threw an error during the resize, and left with me a un-bootable Windows 7 partition. Windows 7 gets up to about where the login screen appears, but then BSODs and reboots. Unfortunately, the bsod is so fast, that I cannot see any details. Windows 7 recovery mode cannot fix the issue. When I try to repair the disk in gparted I get this error:
ERROR: Current NTFS volume size is bigger than the device size!
Corrupt partition table or incorrect device partitioning? I have attached my gparted_details log files, in a zipped folder.

I've downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 and I have installed it within ms windows. My first problem was when I went to boot Ubuntu and the graphics weren't right so I rebooted it with a different graphic configuration and it installed successfully. When I went to boot Ubuntu a second time to actually use it I got the following error:

I was running Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop on a headless Pentium 4 machine which is our file, mail, web & fax server. The two x 250GB SATA hard disks were in a RAID 1 array with full disk encryption. Ran the 9.10 upgrade via WEBMIN and it failed. I should have known then to copy over everything to a backup disk, but instead I rebooted.
On restart the machine accepted my encryption passphrase but promptly hung with a mountall symbol lookup error - code 127. So I can't start the machine to get at the disks, and using a Live CD is useless as it has no way to open the RAID array to get at the encrypted partitions. Although we have data backed up (as at last night) I'd hoped not to have to rebuild the entire server from scratch. But its looking bad.I have taken one drive out and plugged it into another machine (Hercules), and the partitions show up as /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdb3.
If it weren't for RAID, I could open /dev/sdb2 the main partition) in Disk Utility and enter my encryption passphrase to get access. But RAID adds a layer of obstruction that I have not yet overcome. I used mdadm to scan the above partitions and created the /etc/mdadm.conf file, which I edited to show the 2nd drive as missing (rather than risk corrupting both drives). I activated the RAID array with mdadm, and cat shows:

Dual boot PC, boot disk and WIN XP are on good disk, Ubuntu was installed on failed disk. (I prefer separate disks for each OS).
I know I will need to reinstall Ubuntu later, and of course, GRUB2 now crashes without the Ubuntu disk.
Confirm that the only thing I need to do when I get the new drive installed and partitioned is to boot my XP disk in Recovery Mode and type "fixmbr", (then reboot to confirm clean WIN operation on the existing disk) then install Ubuntu as normal on the new disk.

After upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10 I have had some problems booting my Ubuntu. It all started when restarting after the upgrade, and I got the error;

Now I could start my Ubuntu again. So whats the problem? If I turn off my computer the normal way, there is no problem, but if I log off, put it into sleep mode, if something happens and I have to turn it off with the button it goes back to the first problem, and I have to reboot it with the USB stick and fix it all over again! If I don't have the USB stick with me, I probably wont be able to use my laptop!

I'm wanting to run 10.10 server from a root disk located on an iSCSI server. My server is FreeBSD 8 running isc-dhcpd and is sharing out a 20GB iSCSI disk. I've run the server install CD (currently testing in VMWare), and it finds the iSCSI share without a problem. I'm able to install the OS just fine, but the problems start when I try to boot the installation. I'm booting off a gPXE iso until I can get PXE chain-loading figured out. My DHCP config looks as such:

I have installed Fedora 12 on my HP laptop which has got a NVIDIA graphics card. I have got latest F12 kernel 2.6.32 as well as default kernel 2.6.31.I have installed Nvidia Proprietary Drivers and modified grub.conf file for 2.6.32 kernel saying blacklist nouvaue so that it can load NVIDIA drivers ...After that I am able to successfully boot into 2.6.32 kernel with Nvidia Proprietary Drivers.Everything seems to be fine .. My Fedora 12 System was failed when booting.The message like that : mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/mapper/my_vol missing codepage or helper program, or other error. In some case, useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so Can't mount at root filesystem. [drm: drm_mode_rmfb ] *ERROR* tried to remove a fb that we didn't own. Boot has failed, sleep forever. I guess something wrong with my hard disk, so the bootloader can't recognize the filesystem type.

I downloaded the Fedora live dvd iso file, burned it to a dvd. I was wondering if I forgot to do something or did I do something wrong. When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.

I have 2 Debian OS's and wanted to put Fedora next to it.
Install went ok, but after rebooting it says: "No root device found. Boot has failed, sleeping forever."
During install from the live CD I didn't "v" the boot (efi or something?) because I thought Grub would take care of everything.
Should I just reinstall again and choose the Fedora bootloader? Won't it mess up Grub?

I've downloaded Fedora 12 and decided to try and install it on my old laptop which is currently running Ubuntu 9.10 with no problems.
When I boot from the live cd, it starts to load with the 3 bars on the bottom, one on top of the other, one is white, one is dark blue, the other is in between those colours in the spectrum somewhere....
Anyway, the load bars complete and "Fedora 12" turns white, then the following output populates:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'DM_Snapshot_Cow' (<----- repeated a bunch of times) can't mount root filesystem Boot has failed, sleeping forever.

Okay, so on occasion when I boot into ubuntu I get this error
[mount: mounting /dev /root/dev failed: no such file or directory]
[mount: mounting /dev /root/sys failed: no such file or directory]
[mount: mounting /dev /root/proc failed: no such file or directory]

I get the error when I open any of the kernel versions or any recovery mode. Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop is the only OS installed on the computer, which is a Lenovo S10-3. I can eventually get it to go away, sometimes by repeatedly unplugging it and plugging it back in, and sometimes I will boot into GParted, do nothing, then restart and it will work.I have found some solutions online, but all of them involve the error happening as a result of dual booting with Windows.I have made no major system changes recently, so I can't see anything like that being the problem.

I have a Feadora 12 Live CD. It booted up fine on my 700 Mhz computer. I've since then put a new HDD in with which I intended to install Fedora on. But now i get this message

my partitioning layout was as follows
Vista Recovery
Windows 7
GRUB
Extended
-->Fedora 12 (ext4)
so, I shrunk my recovery in Windows 7 successfully, and booted into my Fedora 12 live cd to run Gparted, and move the partitions so that the free space could go towards fedora, I did such, and then I couldn't expand the partition to my dismay. Next, I woke up this morning, tried to boot to fedora to run SSH, grub loaded, but when I tried to boot fedora, I got the "File system check failed" error, and when I tried 7, it just went to a blank screen with a single "_" in the top left-hand corner.
