Ubuntu :: Error Waiting For Other Software Manager To Quit
Apr 17, 2010
I'm new on Ubuntu and while I was trying to download some software the following error appears; Waiting for other software managers to quit, I just read that the solution is to run manually
'sudo dpkg --configure -a'.

I have been trying to update my server from 6.06 server to 10.04 server. My attempts have been complicated by versions later than 6.06 not being able to properly read my CD-ROM. I used the 'do-release-upgrade' mechanism to upgrade to from 6.06 to 8.04 and then to 10.04. 8.04 loaded OK, but 10.04 fails to boot with the surprisingly common "Gave up waiting for root device" error. It stops at the built-in shell prompt. If I exit from the shell, it seems to boot up normally.
I have verified that the boot partition is /dev/sda1 and the UUID for the partition is correct. My system is an older IBM eServer xSeries 350 with quad 700MHz XEON processors and a 36GB SCSI drive. This system properly installed from the 6.06 CD and boots under this version without problems. So I have some questions. Only the first one needs an answer.
1. What do I need to do to get my system to boot properly?
2. Why was this software released with this error?
3. Why wasn't the faulty loader pulled from the release until it was fixed?
4. Is it possible to revert to the 6.06 loader, which works fine?
5. Why doesn't the loader attempt to try something else that should work instead of just giving up?

I just installed LXDE and configured the .xinitrc file and when I gave the command "startx" and it tried to start, but stopped with this error message
Waiting for X server to shut down error setting MTRR
(base = 0xf0000000, size = 0x04000000, type = 1) Inappropriate ioctl for device (25)
I am not sure if I configured the .xinitrc file correctly, so that may be the problem.

The system is an old AMD Duron 650MHz that was dug out of the garbage, trying to set it up as a light duty server. I installed ubuntu 10.04 with no errors or troubles during the install, however whenever the system is booted it sits at a cursor for about a minute then goes into busybox giving the error "Gave up waiting on root device." and says that the hard drive does not excist. If I sit at busybox for about another minute and type exit it then boots ubuntu 10.04 with no errors or issues.

I needed to use CIFS for accessing a NTFS network share. I decided to include CIFS in the kernel and tried compiling and installing it. Now when I (try to) boot in my new kernel with CIFS support, I get the message: gave up looking for root device.

everytime i try to install the updates from the update manager i get this error message:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, i have tried running the sudo dpkg --configure -a in the terminal but when it asks for the password the keyboard stops working so i cant type anything into the terminal. can anyone help me fix this? My other problem was when i try to run the Add/Remove Applications i can't ever install any of the software because it says its "waiting for other tasks" i'm not sure why its doing this either.

If i close rhythmbox using the close tab on the window it closes to a daemon on the application bar. This is both fine and handy but i have a problem in that even when i left-click the daemon and hit 'quit', Rythmbox closes and then appears again a few seconds later. The same happens if i 'killall Rrhythmbox' in the terminal.I can also see, in conky, that Rhythmbox is running as a process when it re-opens and i can effectively 'show Rythmbox from the daemon - so its not just a daemon problem. Can someone either tell me how to permanently quit a running instance of Rhythmbox or tell me what setting i have enabled that keeps Rhtymbox opening?

I'm installing Ubuntu and I'm stuck in the installation. I'm at the part where it say Who are you? and you type your username, nickname, password, etc. They all have checks, it says ready when you are, but I can't press forward. I can't do anything except go back which is to keyboard layout and location before that. No way to quit the installer or anything.

I have installed this but it is command line and i don't know how to quit the thing. Motion is command line. It keeps capturing unless i shutdown the computer. Very frustrating. I also would like help to understand how to configure Motion if someone can fill in the information gaps on this website
http://www.chriswpage.com/2009/05/se...04-and-motion/
I have also tried zoneminder but it does not want to run for some reason. I have gone to the zoneminder forum and asked but i don't seem to get very far. They got me to download a zoneminder/ubuntu live cd. I used that but it wasn't seeing the camera. Whereas on the distro i have right now cheese, kamoso so see it.
I can live stream with Motion within firefox but i need the motion capturing part configured and without something that will quit Motion the app it's a bit useless. Would appreciate some advice as i have been struggling a long time trying to get this security thing happening

When I click on the network icon in the panel, Wireless Connections is enabled, but Ubuntu shows no available wireless networks? I can switch to my other laptop and it works fine.

Courtesy of Peacedog I managed to get my usb wireless-n adapter to work in Ubuntu 10.04. Unfortunately, Windows managed to hose the hard drive while I was configuring it so I had reformat and reinstall both WinXP and U10. The USB wireless-n works perfectly under WinXP but nothing happen under U10. The icon in the Panel shows spinning arrows indicating there's a connection but I can't actually get out. Here are the outputs requested from the previous go around.
