Networking :: USB Wireless-n Quit Working In Ubuntu 10.04?
Sep 27, 2010
Courtesy of Peacedog I managed to get my usb wireless-n adapter to work in Ubuntu 10.04. Unfortunately, Windows managed to hose the hard drive while I was configuring it so I had reformat and reinstall both WinXP and U10. The USB wireless-n works perfectly under WinXP but nothing happen under U10. The icon in the Panel shows spinning arrows indicating there's a connection but I can't actually get out. Here are the outputs requested from the previous go around.

I just did a fresh install of 9.10 about 4 or 5 days ago on my HP dv7 computer. I have a Broadcom 4322 wireless card. I had some initial trouble getting my wireless to work, but I was able to find and install the Broadcom STA wireless driver necessary for the wireless card to work, and since then it was rough skating, but at least it was skating, until about half an hour ago.
Everything was working fine until my battery died unexpectedly and the computer shut down. When I restarted it I was not able to reconnect to wireless, and although I have the Broadcom driver installed, it says "This driver activated but not currently in use." I have a touch panel to turn on my wireless which is supposed to turn blue when I touch it to signal that the wireless is on, but no matter how hard I try, the touch panel wireless button stays orange. It does not seem to be able to recognize that my wireless card exists.
I installed 10.10 on my 2nd laptop with the SAME internal wireless card as my other laptop, but Ubuntu all of a sudden acts like I have no wireless card? When I click on the network icon in the panel, Wireless Connections is enabled, but Ubuntu shows no available wireless networks? I can switch to my other laptop and it works fine.
I just upgraded to 10.04, as of this upgrade, samba has quit working.
From Windows I can ping the linux box (192.168.1.110) If from Windows I key in ->Start->Run->\192.168.1.110 I connect to my linux box.
If I try to access the linux box through the name, (\tardis) I get network path not found.
Everything worked fine before the upgrade, now I cannot see my linux box via its network name. I have a WD TV Live on my network and I must be able to see the linux box via its network name or I cannot connect to it.
iptables shows no rules
smbtree returns SONCOM \WINDOZE \WDTVLIVE WDTV LIVE Server requested LANMAN password (share-level security) but 'client lanman auth' is disabled failed tcon_X with NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
I've had my wireless networking (on an Acer Aspire laptop) working perfectly well for at least six months. Now, quite suddenly, after a reboot I get the message from wicd, "No wireless networks found". I probably was running a week or so before that without needing a reboot. Windows wireless is fine (I'm using it to send this post). In addition, my sound stopped working and I see a fleeting message to the effect that the sound system is reverting from analog to digital.I'm running Kubuntu 9.10. My guess is that something in a recent round of updates knocked me out of the box. How can I proceed to set things aright?
For what it is worth 2 hard drives have Kubuntu 8.04 and the 3rd has Mandriva Spring 2008. Tuesday was the last time I had used Pidgin and everything was fine. Wednesday when I booted the computer I noticed that the Pidgin icon in the sys tray looks broken. I click on it and it shows "Pidgin is available" "connecting" and that's it. The buddy list is empty. Went to my other Kubuntu hard drive, same thing, went to my Mandriva hard drive same thing. Installed Kopete on this hard drive and it shows no one available.
I did a search here before posting and found nothing.
I am using 10.04.I have used Devede for a year or more and it has worked great untill a couple of weeks ago. When I go on the menu and select it the menu goes away and nothing happens. When I run it fron the terminal I get;
devede
(process:751): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. DeVeDe 3.16.9[code].....
So sound from the speakers on my laptop (hp mini 311) quit working randomly. I either installed an update or just rebooted and it quit working. The sound from the headphone port still works but that is annoying.
Here is some information about my hardware. Code: *-multimedia description: Audio device product: MCP79 High Definition Audio vendor: nVidia Corporation physical id: 8 bus info: pci@0000:00:08.0 version: b1 width: 32 bits clock: 66MHz capabilities: pm bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 maxlatency=5 mingnt=2 resources: irq:23 memory:d3100000-d3103fff
I have no idea why but my keyboard suddenly stopped working in X when I started my computer this morning! The keyboard still works fine in the command line mode, though, so I can do stuff as long as it does not involve a GUI. (NetworkManager only works in X).
I have a problem with Xorg, I am not sure if the black screen is related, but sometimes when I am just using the computer, with heavy processor and memory, but sometimes not, but the title bars to the programs disappear, my compiz effects quit working, and the cairo dock becomes unusable, so I cannot switch windows, but I can close them using 'File > Close" to access the windows under the ones on top, and to fix it I have to switch over to a terminal "Ctrl + Alt + F2" and log into that to kill Xorg by "sudo top" and killing it with the PID.
And the Blanking Screen, I am just doing usual programming with Bluefish, Eclipse and the terminal, and the screen will just go black, and won't come on if I wiggle the mouse, press a key on the keyboard or turn it off and back on, the status light on the monitor stays green, and doesn't go to orange as if it were unplugged or the computer went idle, so I know that it is still communicating with the monitor, but the way I fix this is I have to manually power down the machine via the power button and turn it back on and it works normally for a while.
I just installed some updates, one of which might have been kdebase-3.5.4-20.el5.centos.i386.rpm. Before I installed the updates, switching to a VT console using ALT+CTRL+Fn (n=1..6) worked, but after installing the updates it quit working within a KDE session. It does still work from the login screen (so it's not an X problem, or a /etc/inittab problem). After logging into a KDE session, I can get to a VT console if I first use ALT+CTRL+F12 Here's the keyboard section from xorg.conf:
There is no option DontVTSwitch line. I have the same problem on another computer. That one is more of a problem because its keyboard doesn't have an F12 key. What to do?
Two days ago, the down arrow cursor key quit working on my usb keyboard. I could go up, or left and right, but not down. I figured the key was broke and pulled out a PS/2 keyboard and plugged it in. Problem seemed to be solved. This morning, the down arrow cursor key again was not working. I thought that was a weird coincidence, so I plugged in the old usb keyboard, and the down arrow cursor key was again working!
I want to switch my laptop from XP to Ubuntu, but right now, i cant risk installing it. i dont want to have it partitioned so i can dual boot, so for now i only run the try-it-out mode. Before i consider installing though, i want to see if i can get everything to work ahead of time, that way im not regreting instalation. I have a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, with 55GB hard drive and 516MB ram. So far, the trial mode is working great, but the wireless will not work. Ive tried to install the driver, but i am unable to do so. I have looked this up, and i have tried many things, and so far, none have worked.I was wondering if it was just part of the trial thing or not, but it is a Broadcom Wireless BCM4318 driver
When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.
For some reason, i just cannot get my wireless to work in xubuntu. When i click on the network-manager applet, it only has the wired network tab and VPN connections, there are NO wireless networks displayed. I have also tried iwconfig, which returned
lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. and lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Memory Controller Hub (rev 07) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset PCI Express Graphics Port (rev 07) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 03)
I can connect to the internet with wired connection. The switch for the device is on but this command "sudo lshw -C network" has the following results:
I have a compaq nc6400 with the intel Pro/Wireless 3945 ABG card. It fails to find any wireless networks.the IWL3945 driver was installed automaticallyBut when searching for networks none are found, even though on any other computer in the house the network is found.According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Ha...sIntel#miniPCI
I have just installed openSuse 11.4 KDE 64-bit on a Dell M1330. When I click on my networking panel, it says WLAN interface is unavailable. I've followed the steps in the stickied post and found the WLAN hardware info, a screenshot of which is below:Uploaded with ImageShack.usNext it says to do this - you need to look at the logs, in particular the info in /var/log/boot.msg. To see this, you need YaST => Miscellaneous => System Logs and select boot.msg.In YaST there is no such option for system logs under miscellaneous, so I can't do that. The results of the sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan command produce the following:
root's password: lo Interface doesn't support scanning. eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.
i just installed Gosalia mad monkey on an old dell d520 latitude but cant get wireless working? i found how to set up my wireless connection butits asking for the default keyring password to unlock?i never set a password for this as it never askedi found this but i still dont understandit states" Typed in all the details, clicked Add and... Enter password for default keyring to unlock. Huh? I didn't set that... Tried the root password, tried the user password, none worked. The answer: Gosalia's team remastered Ubuntu with their password locking the keyring. Quite a funny situation. "
Just upgraded to the newest version of Ubuntu(unity), and my wireless isn't working. I have the 14e4:4315 Wireless Card so I followed this posts [URL].... And still have no wifi, when I click the icon in the menu bar it says under "Wireless Networks": "wireless is disabled by hardware switch", which ins't true because on my Vostro 1520, there is only one switch and it is in the on position. I've tried 3 versions of ubuntu and none of them work with wifi getting tired of it.
In the wake of a spate of posts complaining that wireless is not working in 10.04 here is mine. I'm on a (relatively old) AMD Duron 1.5Ghz, 1.5G memory with a VIA KM-266 motherboard. Wireless worked fine in 9.10. With a fresh install of the new 10.04, the usb wireless adapter is not detected, the tab to add a new wireless connection is grayed out, starting the KNetworkManager (did I got the name right?) does nothing (that is, no application starts), etc.note: if you are wondering how I am accessing the internet, I just fired up the 9.10 live CD, which as you can imagine is not the most practical thing in the world. Here is the info. The commands lsusb and lspci spit the following:
Code: grodrigues@grodrigues-desktop:~$ lsusb Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.4.2. The wireless worked perfectly in 9.04, but did not not work at all in 9.10, and now 10.4.2. I'm running a Planex USB wireless dongle on an ancient ShuttleXPC SN41G (circa 2003) - the wireless dongle is an XLink Kai GW-USMini2N. I'm connected right now on the Shuttle via Ethernet cable, but would really like to get the wireless up and running again. Here's all the info I could get as per the pinned topic instructions:
I have installed 10.10 a few weeks ago and was able to have a wired internet connection without problems. However I haven' been able to get my wireless to work. Here are the commands I tried which might give a clue to what's wrong to someone helpful... From reading other post, I think the gateway is missing but I am not able to set it up properly...
Code: lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub (rev 0c) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 PCI Express Root Port (rev 0c) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 02)
I installed ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop hp 620 and wired connection is working but wireless is not working at all. I checked the old posts and when I enter the command "iwconfig" it shows the following:
lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 RT2860 Wireless ESSID:"" Nickname:"RT2860STA" Mode: Auto Frequency=2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Bit Rate:1 Mb/s RTS thrff Fragment thrff Link Quality=10/100 Signal level:0 dBm Noise level:-87 dBm Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
I read in the older posts that the "Access Point: Not-Associated" should be "Access Point: Invalid" and the command that is used for this purpose is " sudo iwconfig wlan0 ap auto" and it did work-but for sometime, and again it showed me "not associated" when I restarted.
Previously I have had Linux installed on my laptop (OpenSUSE, Ubuntu) with no problems as far as wireless networking in concerned. Due to wanting to play a certain game (which I have since grown tired of), I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Recently I have booted up to live DVDs of PC-BSD, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and OpenSUSE 11.2 and I cannot get wireless networking working.
At home I use WPA2 Personal. I put in the passphrase into NetworkManager (the same as I do for Windows), and the computer gets an IP address from the router (I use 10.3.5.x at home). The problem is, I cannot connect to the Internets. If I do "ping -c 3 cnet.com" it gives me the proper response of 216.239.113.101, but if I try to go to cnet.com, I get a page cannot be displayed in Firefox.
I get this error for every website. I don't understand it seeing that I can ping the websites, but even if I put the IP address in the URL, it still doesn't load the page. What am I doing wrong? Everything is dynamic, as in Win7. But everything works perfectly in Windows, but no such luck in Linux. I know it must be something simple, but I'm at a loss. Seeing that I no longer play Star Trek Online, I'd like to put Linux or BSD back on my laptop, but no Internet is not an option.
I've bought an RALINK getnet Wireless USB adapter and am trying to get it to work on a dual boot pc running XP and 9.10. According to the forums and the manufacturers website (www.getnet.com.tw), this should be supported in Linux.
Using the disk that came with it, I have gotten it to work in Windows. I've spent nearly a day scouring the Ubuntu forums and trying different things, but still haven't got it working in 9.10. (I think that most of my confusion is that many of the threads are for earlier versions)
If I type "iwconfig", I get this:
Code: graeme@graeme-desktop:~$ iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wmaster0 no wireless extensions.
[Code].....
I have the CD that has a LINUX directory, but am not sure what to do with it. Through other threads I have determined that my drivers are rt2870.sys and .inf and have downloaded these. I'm not really sure what to do with them next..... Many threads talk about going System>Administration>Networking, but I don't have this as an option. I have however got an option which I downloaded called "Windows Wireless Drivers" which seemed to let me load the rt2870.inf driver, but then says "No" after it (not very helpful).
I have enabled Wireless Networking, and added my SSID etc etc, but I still don't connect.
I spent days trying to figure out how to get my atheros AR928x 802.11n wireless card to work in Ubuntu. The card worked perfect in Windows 7 but the connection kept dropping in Ubuntu. It would find my router and connect with 60% signal for about 5 seconds, then fall down to about 25% signal and then cut out altogether. After searching for days to find a solution, I finally figured it out and figured Id post it here to let everyone else in the same boat have a working wireless too!
I found this solution from:[URL].. This solution is for JAUNTY (Ubuntu 9.04), so if you are running Jaunty, you can just follow that post. If you are using Karmic (Ubuntu 9.1), you can follow this tutorial I'm posting. It's pretty simple: First, make sure you got all your files up to date. Type in a terminal:
sudo apt-get update Let that run, and once its done, type into terminal: sudo apt-get upgrade Once that finished, restart your computer. Again open up terminal and type: sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic
If you are using Jaunty, instead of karmic type in jaunty, if you use another version of ubuntu, you can find a list of versions and their names here:[URL].. Restart your computer one more time, and you should be good to go! This has been tested and confirmed to work on: -Ubuntu 9.1(karmic) with an Atheros 928x 802.11n wireless card, using the Ubuntu installed network software, in a Gateway NV53 laptop connected to a belkin 802.11n wireless router.-HP base station / 802.11g airport express
This has been tested and does not work/has issues with:
-airport extreme I hope this works for you too, and if it does, please let me know with your hardware and Ubuntu version so I can post here what other setups have been confirmed to let this work.
