Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit. I was importing photos into f-spot. Then my laptop shutdown because it overheated (a different problem). Now f-spot will not open. A dialog pops up and says "F-Spot Encountered a Fatal Error. Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation." Here are the error details:

I've read somewhere that there might be a bug with themes, but I've changed mine back and forth. I don't really think this is a bug as much as something that happened when the computer crashed. I've tried uninstalling f-spot and reinstalling it, I get the same error above. Anybody have any idea on how to get it working again?

I have perl/tk installed and working. I tried using c++/tk and had to change the #include path in the headers to find the tk.h and tcl.h. I tried compiling a simple c++ program with g++ to test that the headers are correct. the line i type at console is:
g++ test.c cpptk.cc cpptkbase.cc -o test.bin

I have a new Asus Eee Pc 1215n and installed on it Ubuntu 10.10. This way it was configured as dual-boot with 4 partitions. One for Windows7 one for Windows recovery, one for Linux swap and one ext4 for Ubuntu.Everything was working fine until I installed the ext2fsd driver on Windows. It couldn't read the ext4 partition properly so I played with the options. There I tried changing the ext partition's type from "Linux" to "Linux extend" (which was obviously wrong). After the reboot I get a message when the computer starts up saying "error: partition not found" and in the next line "grub rescue>" with a dash flashing but without any recognizable commands.
I tried reinstalling grub from the Ubuntu 10.10 live cd following these instructions but now I get exactly the same screen, this time saying "error: file not found." instead. What was weird was that gparted in the live Ubuntu couldn't see any partition in the hard drive. It appeared like the whole space was unallocated.When I type 'help' in "grub rescue" it tells me "unknown command". When I type 'ls' it returns: (hd0) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1)I think this might be a clue of what is going on since all the partitions should not be flagged as msdos.

My problem is basically that when I boot for the first time after a fresh installation and setup, I am always stuck at the login screen or thrown back to it. No matter what account I log onto, whether it's 'root' or any other user account I have setup, it would attempt logging in, black out the screen, turn my monitor off then on again and I'm back at the login screen. This is all using the graphical interface of course. I'm having this same problem with all the linux distributions that I've tried so far:
Gnome Sabayon Mandriva 2010-I've even tried changing all the different boot environments, and same problem Open Solaris and Ubuntu won't even install. It just sits at the loading screen. Why would this happen? I've tried all these OS's on my regular PC, which is a dual core, 4 gb of ram, and they've worked perfectly. So why wouldn't it run properly on that other PC?

I have installed a bioinformatics tool called Pathway Tools on ubuntu 10.10, and I'm trying to access it through ssh client from windows vista client system. my client is puTTY. I can run the terminal shell, and I log in and everything goes alright. I'm having real issues installing 10.04 to an SSD - I had one SSD fail, and have replaced it with a brand new one, but the 10.04 installer fails at beginning to write files to the disk with this error:
[Errno 30] Read-only file system: '/target/bin'.
Curiously:
* Windows XP will install to this SSD with no issues
* I can install 10.04 to a standard HDD with no errors.
What is happening that is stopping me from installing 10.04 to this drive? I am fairly sure that there is no issue with the SSD (I have two brand new, identical OCZ Vertex II 60gb drives which both encounter this error.)
I have tried partitioning the drive using gparted on another machine, leaving 5mb free at the start of the drive, and having a single partition for /, and a 1gb swap partition. "Round to cylinders" was unchecked. The partitioning was successful, and the drives can be mounted on my other machine, but the 10.04 installer encounters the same error.

I want to install EVMS n machines with openSuse 11.2. The EVMS installation procedure (EVMS: Installation: Installing the EVMS Tools), point 3, says to do: "make install".
I'm in the correct folder, there is the file Makeinstall.ini, but just try to run the command I've an error (make cannot have install like target).

I was trying to install ubuntu 9.10 as a dual boot system with windows and I recieved this error message: The Grub package failed to install into /target/. Without the Grub boot loader, the installed system will not boot
This Error comes up after 94% of the install. I also cannot seem to get the side by side install option to work (sometimes this option appears sometimes it does not) I am not sure but I beleive seome of the install files have been placed on the hard drive because I only get the option now to install on the hard drive and totally wipe clean or the emptiest hard drive. So how would I get the possible Ubuntu install off the Hard drive. I have used this CD to Install before it has no scratches therefore should work. Also If I have Win Xp on a Raid 0 will the Ubuntu 9.10 install ?

Recently after reboot, our server is generating Segfault on running one application (Rational Tau 3.0). Below is the error log:/home1/env/tau3.0/bin/taubatch --project ../Model/TRXHM.ttp --config Target -G Telelogic Tau Application Builder make: *** [generate] Segmentation fault (core dumped)
The server was rebooted after some firmware upgrade on Network storage and no changes were made to Server Settings. Interestingly this problem is coming only for a particular revision (Tau 3.0) while other revision is working fine. Application (tau 3.0) is available on a network share (mounted on server) and is working fine on other machines.

I am relatively new to linux and am running into a problem. I just got a new laptop and need to configure/install it's wireless driver but am getting an error when running "make". The error is: make[1]: Entering directory `/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop/build' make[1]: *** No rule to make target `modules'. Stop.
I have scoured these forums and know that others have the same issue (when configuring other drivers/programs). I am sorry if this post is redundant. It sounds like the Makefile is pointing to the wrong directory. I am using opensuse 11.4, have make and gcc installed. My kernel is linux-2.6.37.1-1.2 (I just re-installed the desktop kernel to make sure it was up to date). The driver I am trying to install is located here: AUR (en) - rtl8192ce.
Another forum suggests pointing somewhere in the /usr/src/linux-2.6.37.1-1.2 directory instead. Is this correct? Should I be pointing to a folder within this? I am not a programmer but any description about what I am actually putting in this directory and why would be awesome (so I can learn a bit more). Or just helping me solve the problem would be great too.

What I am trying to do is edit the link target to force ip=xxxx.xxx.xxx string at end. I have a software program which access 4 different servers running the software but with different configs. In xp I can copy links and modify as above to correctly force the program to the various servers.
I have read the various how tos on hard vs sym links which I get. Playing around with hardlinks and sysmlinks (the examples I find) does not seem to be what I need. Feel like this is pretty basic stuff but I am a bit stumped.

There is a symlink from /var/www to a personal directory. FollowSymlink and chmod 755 are all set. It works perfectly until each morning I will get a "Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible" error. When I do a "sudo service apache2 restart", the problem will go away.
