Ubuntu :: Enable Keyboard Accelerator Underlining By Default?

Sep 6, 2010

I just upgraded from Jaunty Jackalope to Lucid Lynx.
I prefer to have the Keyboard Accelerators underlined at all times.
That is, I don't want them hidden until I press Alt.
Keyboard accelerators aren't accelerating my work if I have to wait a second or two to read what the underlined letter is after I press the Alt key.
On Windows there's a setting for this (Control Panel, Display, Appearance, Effects, Hide Underlined letters).

Where can I set this in Ubuntu?

I read that setting gtk-enable-mnemonics=1 in a ~/.gtkrc or ~/.gtkrc-2.0 file should do it. I tried that. Doesn't work.

I read that Ubuntu Tweak has a setting for it. I installed Ubuntu Tweak. I couldn't find the setting.

Ubuntu :: Remove The Underlining From Letters On KDE

Jan 18, 2010

how to remove the underlining from letters on KDE (on menus and buttons for keyboard shortcuts I think)? I am currently running Kde4.4. If this can not be done through KDE would it be possible to modify the actual font itself to remove the underlining option? I never use the keyboard to navigate and with the font I am using the underlining seems to touch the letters themselves. Also, on a side note, does anybody know what the command is to bring up the "loguout, turn off computer and restart" menu (the one that comes up when Ctrl+alt+del) are pressed?

Ubuntu :: Enable Re-attached Mouse/keyboard Via Ssh?

May 19, 2010

I had 9.10 x64 Desktop installed on a nettop I have (that I normally run headless), and yesterday I decided to take the plunge and update to 10.04. So, I plugged in a screen and usb mouse/keyboard and set to work.

It was 1am, and it was telling me it had 3hrs left to install all the new packages, so I unplugged the screen and usb mouse/keyboard, left the box running, and went to bed. This evening, I plugged it all back in again to check progress. It's asking if I want to remove obsolete packages. I do, but neither the mouse nor keyboard work!

I can access the box via SSH like I normally do; is there any way I can re-enable the keyboard from there?

I'm reluctant to restart the box (via ssh) mid-way through such a complicated upgrade.

OpenSUSE :: Good Download Manager And Accelerator?

May 10, 2011

Excuse me for bringing back this kind of subject already discussed by other users, but I need it. I have slow internet connection so I need a download manager that is able to accelerate downloads and resume them after they are paused or interrupted by provider disconnection. I tried kget but it's very slow. After some minutes downloads hadn't even started. I found that downthemall and prozgui got a more suitable speed but I have had problems with latter versions of both.

In downthemall almost at all downloads that amount to a size of several Mb's the speed start to slow down when it reaches from 90% to 99% completed until 0kb/s and download pauses, needing manual resuming. But I can stay watching downloads to see when they'll stop, mainly if they are large. Prozgui worked fine in my opensuse 11.3 install but now on 11.4 some downloads seem to end up correctly but when I use them some files are corrupted.

Ubuntu :: Set Default Keyboard Layout To Romanian?

May 18, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu Lucid Lynx for my friend from Moldova, added there a romanian localization via Language support and removed English.

Then, I wanted to set default keyboard layout to Romanian, so I moved it up above the US layout. However, after reboot I always had US keyboard layout selected in Gnome.

So I removed US keyboard layout and left there only Romanian one. But, surprisingly, US layout always appears after reboot and is selected by default.

Ubuntu :: Change Default Keyboard Layout

Jun 21, 2010

This was a fresh install of 10.04. I set the keyboard for UK Intl for use with a cordless keyboard. The keyboard turns out to be incompatible with 10.04, because it does not type the ' and " signs correctly. I tried another cordless keyboard with the same result. I gave up and attached a plug in usb keyboard which has a USA layout. I added USA International layout and set to apply system wide.

The problem is that whenever the computer is shut down and restarted it reverts to the UK setting, and even though I'm using a USA keyboard it still does not type the ' and " signs correctly. Can I fix this without doing a full re-install?

Ubuntu :: Change - Default - Keyboard Layout In 11.04?

Jul 23, 2011

At first, I've installed the desktop version (Gnome desktop environment) with a German keyboard (u know, "y" and "z" is swapped, etc...) and everything turned out to be fine.

The problem comes when I want to use a normal en-US layout keyboard to replace the German keyboard.

I simply did: System Settings --> Hardware --> Keyboard and in the "Layouts" page I "Remove" the German layout and "Add" the USA layout. I even clicked the "Apply System-Wide..." button...

Things work out fine for the current session.

But each time after a restart/log out the default layout will go back to German although the USA layout still exists in the "Layouts" page. And also in the console I can tell the layout is still German.

I've seen there is an option to change that on the grub menu and I would like it to default to Spanish. Is it possible? I haven't found much info on the web, but my guess is that changing the DEFAULT_APPEND in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader with an unknown-keyboard-related option will solve it.
