View 5 Replies View RelatedI feel shy asking this question but, 90% of the applications I install in Ubuntu (last release), do not show up later on in the applications menu, so I cant run them. I know it seems silly, but I can't find the way to handle this inconvenience. Is there a place (like Start> All programs in Windows), were I could find and run all the programs I install?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a large number of virtual machines, each with a basic set of about 30 applications. Obviously, I don't want to do everything manually so I'm looking for ways to automate this process. Multiple distributions (Ubuntu, Red Hat Ent., FreeBSD, CentOS, etc.) will be used, meaning I will have a few Ubuntu installs with the basic set of 30 applications, and multiple Red Hat installs with the same set, etc. So, I'm looking for advice on automating as much of this as I can, even if it means a new form of automation for each distro.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have what seems to be far to many KDE programs running on my Gnome desktop is this normal?
I thought there would be gnome equivalents.
I'll list them:
Is this normal for a Gnome Desktop Fedora installation and if so which are completely arbitrary and can be removed safely?
Also is xorg supposed to use 8-20% of the CPU when all that is running is the system monitor? The system monitor application also uses 20-70% of the CPU when it is running by itself also. (Intel Pentium 4, 3.2ghz)
I didn't choose any KDE desktop Applications Intentionally
It's a newbie question that has probably already been answered hundreds of times, but Google didn't help me.
How can I install an application I've downloaded from the internet?I know I can easily install software with the terminal (apt-get, yum etc.) and that there is also a package manager. But still I'd like to know how to install an application I've downloaded with the browser. I've downloaded Thunderbird from this link URL...and after unpacking, I have a folder called 'thunderbird'. Now, what do I have to do to install the application?
I'm not actually concerned with installing Thunderbird anymore because when I typed 'thunderbird' in the terminal, it told me that it isn't installed and if it should be installed. I replied 'y' and some minutes later (slow internet connection...) it was installed and ready to use..
Actually /tmp folder is running out of space and i am unable to install or download any new applications. whenevr i run commands like "make" or "make install" i get error saying not enough space in /tmp. So is there any way by which i can increase the size of this folder or redirect my applications to pther specified folders.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get video calls to work using Empathy 2.30.0. I'm running the 10.04 beta right now, but I've had this problem ever since I installed Empathy. The problem is essentially that I don't even see the option to do a video call with my contact. I can do an audio call, but the option to do a video call is greyed out.
My webcam is built-in (the computer is a Dell Inspiron 1545n). I know that it _can_ work under Linux, as I regularly use Skype. Also, just after I upgraded to 10.04, I briefly had the "video call" option, but when the program crashed I tried to call, and then the option was gone again. What was strange is that for a little bit, before it crashed, my webcam was working, and I could see the image it was receiving. So it can't even be that Empathy just can't use my webcam.
Does anyone know anything about this problem? Everywhere I've looked says that Empathy should be able to make calls using GTalk.
I'm running 9.04, and wanted to use GMail's talk and video features. Registered with Gmail, and had to install a deb called google-talkplugin_current_i386.deb , and after installation, Gmail appeared as if it was ready/ok for a chat, talk or video.
Then I noticed the .deb was not shown under Synaptic, as a 'standard' deb, so in the interests of some 3rd party software NOT running on the computer, uninstalled it.
Went looking in Synaptic, and it does have a 'gtalk'. Is that all that is required, to run talk or video under a web browser, after logging into my GMail account ? Or, should I use Empathy ?
This is my first post and I'm just starting to use Ubuntu again. I currently have 11.04 installed. So my friend and I are trying to voice chat using Google Talk. He is using Windows XP and is going through his web browser. If I use Empathy or Pidgin I can call him and he can hear me speak but I can't hear him. When he calls me, I get no notification from Pidgin, and from Empathy it rings and when I pick up I get nothing. It works perfectly fine for both of us if I also go through my browser. Hopefully someone can help with this or perhaps have another voice chat client we could use? For example, MSN is suppose to work with Empathy. If so, would we have fewer problems using that?
On a side note I always wanted to know when you guys give terminal commands on here do you have them memorized or do you copy and paste?! I'm such a noob when it comes to Linux and can't count the times Ubuntu has made me feel so dumb!
I have recently configured squid proxy server in rhel5 so now I am able to blocking some websites ok, but still I have one problem how can I block gtalk by using squid proxy, one more thing I blocked gmail so now client xp systems are not logging into gmail but still they using gtalk to chatting the things to others. So ultimately I need to block gtalk also by using squid proxy.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI use Karmic 64 bit and have installed Guarddog. When i try to fire up empathy and gtalk, network connection is refused. Clearly, I need to allow a protocol in guarddog. Gtalk uses (I believe) XMPP - which is not listed in Guarddog.
what I could do to let Empathy connect to gtalk servers?
I get to my specific problem, I'm running Xubuntu 9.10 (karmic) on a Playstation 3 (PPC). I am attempting to install "Qemu-launcher".
1. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" via "Add / Remove Applications". it gave me an error about conflicting packages, and deferred me to Synaptic Package Manager.
2. Tried to install "qemu-launcher" in Synaptic Package Manager. error: "Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade -- the following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences. -- qemu-launcher: Depends: qemu-kvm (>=0.11.0~rc1) but it is not installable"
3. Tried to download "qemu-launcher" via "apt-get" in terminal - same error as in Synaptic
4. Attempted to download "qemu-kvm" via "apt-get" in terminal: "package qemu-kvm is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source. E: package qemu-kvm has no installation candidate."
5. Found and downloaded "qemu-kvm-0.11.0~rc1.orig.tar.gz". Extracted archive.

I have a Dell Latitude D530 Laptop (500 GB HDD). Installed Windows XP and then Ubuntu 10.10 to do dual boot. everything works fine in Windows XP.In Ubuntu 10.10 I had issues connecting to Internet(Through Wirelss), I was able to rectify this issue by dsiable ipv6 from firefox about:config and setting true to network.dns.disableIPv6. After this I was able to connect to internet and browse websites from Firefox.But I am having Issues with Evolution Mail(Connection Timed Out) and Google Talk Client(Connection Timed Out).Empathy Internet Messaging gets connected fine.I was wondering if I will have to disable IPv6 System wide and hence I added the following lines to /etc/sysctl.conf
#disable ipv6
net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6 = 1
net.ipv6.conf.default.disable_ipv6 = 1

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am quite new to Linux and am currently running OpenSUSE 11.2.How do I install applications off the DVD?
I tried going to Yast --> add Packages Then I select the DVD. But most applications i want to install are being downloaded from online repos. Does the OpenSUSE 11.2 DVD have kernel-source?
I downloaded and created a LiveCD using PCLinuxOS 2009.I decided I wanted to devote a machine to Linux so I could do more. I installed PCLinuxOS on one of my systems. Great. everything seems to be working pretty good. again, surprised and curious. Lets install some apps and really get the ball rolling... How on God's green earth do you install applications on Linux? You have to jump through hoops and travel to application managers, command line scripting and all sorts of other mess just to install a program? Is it really that much different that a simple install or setup file cannot be created that the end user clicks on? I'm struggling with the concept that entire programs can be written in open source code but an installation routine is beyond the scope of the developers.

way to install applications onto a OpenSuse Live DVD. For example I want to install Sophos for Linux onto a Live DVD so that a disk less PC can be booted from CD and then used to scan other CDs or USB keys. The Sophos product is not distributed in RPM format and so SuSE Studio won't work.
