Aug 23, 2011I have a multiboot system with Windows Seven and Debian Squeeze installed.
When i run Windows, the fans in my PC work silently, but when i run Debian they making extremely terrible noise (looks like they working at full capacity).
I have 4 fans in my chasis, 1 CPU, 1 GPU and 1 PSU, 7 total.

May 11, 2011I am on a 172.16.x.x network with about 60 Windows XP home and Vista home clients in a peer-to-peer workgroup that uses DHCP to assign addresses. About half the traffic on my LAN is netbios broadcast. I do not want to do a WINS server because I do not want to have to manually change the registry on every machine. This is only for local name resolution and I do not have any web servers or e-mail servers. I do not have access to a Windows server to use as a DNS server. I am on Debian and using BIND but am open to other suggestions.

Mar 4, 2010I am installing a custom 8.04 live disk (basically, a mirror of my whole system with user data intact, sans all non-OS files) from a USB key with remastersys for the .iso creation, and UNetbootin for the bootable USB on a brand new 120GB PATA WD HDD. Both do nicely so far, so I have a working livedisk to use until I need to install Ubuntu to the drive.
I had a pure linux box, but I need to add XP with dual booting now- I have to use Autodesk Inventor 2010 software for my college class on my laptop, so I don't drive 30 miles to use the 1 computer lab equipped with that software. I'm not new to Linux, but I am new to more in-depth partitioning. I've taken the lead and looked into things- read this good guide, among others:

http://www.fs-driver.org/ Ubuntu is still my main OS, but being able to access all my media/data files between the 2 systems would be nice. Problem is, until now, I've put everything on a single partition because I didn't know better. Now I do, but am a bit confused with all the guides as to what's most efficient, especially in my case where full RAM speed is crucial to running a single program.
Here's what I know I need to do: 1. The Windows XP install I know needs from 20-30GB for Inventor 2010 LT to work well. I don't need anything else in XP spacewise- it's just being added for Inventor. 2. I'd like to create a separate /home partition for Ubuntu this time to save my user data, making future upgrades much more painless (I will be getting Lucid soon). How that works when upgrading, though, I don't know yet..
3. I'd like both OSes to share all my personal files (docs, pics, music, Inventor design files) if it is an efficient choice that works without problems.
4. Finally, because 2GB is minimum for Inventor to run decently, I need to maximize the speed of my RAM for it- from my reading, these so-called "swap" partitions can somehow be added for buffering this- people seem to sugguest the swap be half the size of the RAM for fastest speed, and some say add separate /usr or other partitions. I'm not clear on what would be most efficient for me.
I have limited HDD space- because of my laptop's BIOS, this single 120GB drive is the biggest I can get on my laptop, so efficient partitioning would make a huge difference for me. Before this, a 60GB HDD was in this. I'd like to see some added space for my data storage, but still keep things as fast as possible for Inventor when I use it, and Ubuntu.
Ubuntu :: Dual Boot XP - 10.10 - Boot Screen Shows Up But Then Computer Restarts And Returns To The GRUB Menu
Dec 16, 2010I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:
Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.

Jan 6, 2011it started with rooting my Motorola Droid. I got quite interested in the whole rooting/linux "world". The only problem is, my hands move A LOT faster than my brain does. I'm an "educated novice" at best when it comes to all of this and still learning slowly, but surely. I followed an online tutorial and before I realized quite what i'd done, I had dual installed Ubuntu linux 10.10 on my laptop. ISO'd this, partitioned that and realized....i'm in way over my head. Then I started researching how to just go back in time and get my "safe" windows vista back until I'm ready to make the switch to linux and just ended up getting more confused.
How do I actually BOOT into Windows on a dual boot computer that I apparently just created? How, if need be, do I undo everything I just did in the past few hours and careless tinkering? If I decide to stay with Linux, how do I get my damn wireless router to recognize?

Mar 1, 2011I have (had) a dual boot computer;Win XP and Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit.I decided it was necessary to enlarge my Root and Home Partitions. Using the instructions http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ome+Partitions I successfully enlarged the partitions and restored 10.10 (I used the copy command suggested by Irony). However when I boot the computer it boots to Ubuntu but no longer gives me the option of going into XP(it is not listed in Grub menu). Is there a fairly straightforward way of getting XP back on the Grub menu so I can boot to XP again?

May 30, 2011I have installed Ubuntu on a partition on my secondary HDD, sense then i have never used windows ( one week ),
then i have formatted my windows which is in the primary HDD.
Now when my computer restart it doesn't show my about wanting to start Ubuntu or windows it starts windows immediately.
PS: in my secondary HDD the partition which Ubuntu is installed on, i still see that it filled with data;it's not empty.
* one more question please; before i have installed Ubuntu i have created a partition ( 50GB ),
which i choose the HardDisk manager to make as "Linux Ext4"; then i have installed Ubuntu on!
is what i did right or wrong or it doesn't matter?

Jul 20, 2010So im trying to backup my computer, and I understand the easiest and maybe best way is just through an external hard drive. Mine is 1 terabyte. Ive organized my folders by just putting everything into my documents. But when I hook up my external hard drive, and I try to drag and drop, even through explorer, or copy and paste the folder, it just creates a shortcut. Then, if I bring it to another computer and open that file it just goes to the my documents of that computer, so it's obviously useless. I know this is extremely basic but I know I should do it prior to dual boot just in case.

Jun 15, 2011UPDATE2: As of 2 weeks ago, it won't boot at all. UPDATE1: HDD booted OK, but I don't know how to copy the GRUB file. Could this be a hardware temperature problem? I have just replaced a Hard Drive, & had to reinstall XP & 10.04.2LTS from scratch, (it was a TOTAL failure) The system now will not boot into XP, or either of the 2 Linux kernels or the recovery modes, without several attempts. ( I'm using a LiveCD now.)
POST is good. GRUB loads, but when I select an OS, it powers off. Windows shows the splash for a few seconds, then shuts down. Yesterday, I was able to boot into Linux after booting into Windows, but today Windows won't boot either. On examining the GRUB menu (e) the first line in the Linux records is 'recordfail' I will attempt to boot from HDD now, & post the GRUB output here. EDIT: If I run MEMTEST first, up to Test6, it boots normally.

My problem is that when I shut down and restart, I no longer have the option to choose windows. Must I blank out the disk and reinstall EVERYTHING from the start, or is there any way to save this? My Ubuntu setup is much simpler than my windows, and if I MUST sacrifice one, it has to be Ubuntu, because it will be much easier to duplicate my ubuntu work than my windows work.

Oct 1, 2009I just noticed that there is an icon on my desktop that is named Filesystem, it is the Windows XP portion of the hard drive. I don't remember seeing it on the desktop, I only noticed it 15 minutes ago after installing Adobe flash player. Is that icon supposed to be on my Fedora desktop?

I was wondering if it was possible to set up a ubuntu installation on it using a 20g hard drive (I have got one of these going on a 486 running win98, just) and be able to run mac os as a dual boot system, possibly with 9.1 and the origanal mac os that come with it? I was thinking of ~100GB for Windows for apps and games etc. ~20-50GB for Ubuntu and some third partition, where I store my common files like media, pics, docs, downloads and stuff, taking the rest of the free space.
What filesystem should the shared partition be? Is there some smart way to get windows home directories and linux home directories to point to the same place on the shared partition or would it be recommended to just keep them separated?

- the first partition is only 64MB;
- the second is a large 900GB partition and
- the last holds all the remaining space
mdadm has been used to set up
/dev/md0 - RAID1, comprised of /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1
/dev/md1 - RAID5, comprised of /dev/sda2, /dev/sdb2, /dev/sdc2, /dev/sdd2
/dev/md2 - RAID5, comprised of /dev/sda3, /dev/sdb3, /dev/sdc3, /dev/sdd3
OK, so it was a silly mistake to make - but I am now need to increase the size of /dev/md0. My thinking is to reduce the size of md1 so that I can grow md0.
On md1 I have two logical volumes. I've successfully reduced the size of the volume so that I can reduce the size of md1. Now I'm at the nervous stage; I can find little written on the topic of shrinking RAID5 arrays - and even if I do this I'm unsure if I can move partitions around to regain the space I so desire.

Now my mouse speed on the x-axis is automatically set higher, which is good if you permanently switch between both monitors all the time. But I don't need it, so how do I turn it off? It's kinda annoying if you're used to your "normal" mouse speed.Y-axis speed is still fine. also, is there a way do display the gnome-do dock on the right handed monitor? it places itself always on the left monitor....I'm using Mint 8 which is Ubuntu 9.10 with gnome 2.28.1

I've been having the same issue since 9.04 and just now figured I should ask about it.When I have dual monitors set up (extended desktop) the mouse speed in the X direction seems to double. ie. assume the mouse usually moves 1 pixel at a time, it now moves 2. It seems to be functioning as usual in the Y direction, which makes the motion really weird and hard to use. I'm using a Wacom tablet for the mouse, but the same happens with my laptops touch pad. Anyone else experience this/know how to fix it?

Jun 19, 2011Lately my computer, while connected to our router and using the internet, drags the connection speed of everyone in the house down tremendously, to the point of being unusable in many cases. Even buffering a ..... video causes tremendous lag across the network, making second-long load times stretch to a minute or more.
Now, our connection isn't the greatest, but ..... shouldn't cause that much lag, so I'm thinking there's something else at work. Is there some application I could use to monitor what programs on my computer are accessing the internet?

Feb 4, 2010Have have a computer from 2001 with: 700 Mhz Celeron CPU, 640 MB RAM (gonna up it to 1GB soon), 64 MB graphics, 30 GB hard drive. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 on this computer, but it runs slow. It's not unusable but slow. I was wondering in Fedora would run faster? I know it has lower system requirements but would it run faster on this older hardware?
