I have some large volumes that I don't want to automatically be e2fsck'd when I reboot the server. Is it safe to change maximum mount count to -1 and check interval to 0 while a volume is mounted, or will that cause problems to the file system?

I did a tune2fs -l on some volumes of mine, and a few say "not clean" as the filesystem state. But how do I tell what's causing it to be not clean, or how severe it is, so i know how soon i need to schedule downtime to run a e2fsck on that volume?

I mounted a volume on the desktop apparently... that worked fine until I rebooted and it had disappeared. it was fairly annoying that I had to go back into the network and re-mount the volume. How can I get it to stay put, even after rebooting?

I want to do a shutdown -rF 3:00 to reboot my RHEL server at 3am tomorrow and force an e2fsck on each volume. But I want the e2fsck to run with the -y switch so it automatically answers yes so it will fix any problems it find automatically.
I can't find anywhere where it says if it will do this or not. does anyone know or have proof? Or is there a better way to do what I'm trying to accomplish?
I have two ext3 lv's of 4GB and 10GB in my hda8 partition, and they are automounted by /dev/mapper/ in my /etc/mtab files in each of the four distros (Suse9.3, OpenSuse10.2, kubuntu7.04 and Debian Lenny 5.0.3). Since ext3 is a journalled fs I feel I ought to fsck their integrity every 3 months or so, however I don't know
a) whether they must be unmounted before running fsck,
b) whether I should use a live CD such as knoppix to run the fsck command, and
c) whether I can and/or should run fsck /dev/hda8, or whether I should somehow fsck each lv seperately?
Is it possible to limit maximum volume in PulseAudio? Currently, PulseAudio sets PCM channel too loud which results in distorted sound. I use aumix to turn volume down, but whenever any other sound is played (IM notification etc), PA plays with knobs, turning master volume down and PCM up. code...
I use OpenSUSE 11.2, pulseaudio 0.9.21, ALSA 1.0.21 and ALC889A sound codec.
I have mounted samba volume and I need to have write permissions for every new folder that's being created (currently, by default, on every newly created folder i have only read and execute permissions).I tried changing umask, but with no effect on mounted folder, umask changed only for local filesystem. I tried mounting with umask option, but with no effect again.I'm using ArchLinux on this machine, and I installed samba using default package manager (pacman).

But if I just want to check one of the volumes rather than all of them, and have it use the -y switch so it will automatically answer yes to everything, how can I do that?I'm using RHEL, and have a huge volume I need to run a check on, and I dont want to sit there for the next 24 hours hitting the Y key every time it finds a problem ;-)
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading (fresh install) to Lucid, I've been having to go through disk checks about once or twice a week on boot. I'm not sure why Lucid thinks it needs to check my disk so often. I looked into it a bit, and found a command that was supposed to stop disk checks happening so often.
Code: sudo tune2fs -i 2w `mount | awk '$3 == "/" {print $1}'` is supposed to set it to 2 weeks. I used "/home" too as I have home on a separate partition and didn't want that to be checked too. All was fine until I booted up to find another disk check today. It can sometimes take over half an hour to finish and C to cancel doesn't always work either.
I always shutdown cleanly, unless Ubuntu completely locks up, which happens maybe once every six months (although it did happen yesterday, but I have rebooted it a few times since then with no checks happening until just now). Is there a way to just disable checks completely? I wouldn't mind running them manually every now and then, I just don't want to do it as often as Lucid does.
These days I see the disk check that is popping up when my Ubuntu is booting up quite frequently. It says 'press C to cancel' but C (or Shift C or CTRL C or CTRL ALT C) does not have any effect. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE reboots but again ends up in the vicious loop of disk check. How to bypass it? When I need to critically enter the desktop for an urgent pressing info waiting for 20 to 25 minutes disk check is kind of difficult.

Occasionally, I experience disk checks during boot without any system freeze or power loss.Sometimes, once reboot, the system works fine but Evolution Mail requests a new account, as if it was used for the very first time.Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

I have an NTFS partition problem which prevents me from installing openSUSE on my desktop computer. It's not a trouble with installation, it's a security issue relating to NTFS.I have a desktop running XP exclusive, but wish to also go dual boot but can not because I have created a NTFS partitoin on my HD wich I don't wish others to know about.After booting window$, I am able to successfully unmount the partition using Diskpart, which is a command line program within that OS. Once unmounted, it is effectively hidden from those who might be snooping until I manually remount it. Essentially I remove the drive letter which makes it inaccessible to Windows.
(Yes I know a person with proper skills can easily find it, but that's not applicable in my case for those who would look)If I install openSUSE which I desperately desire, it will automatically locate and mount the NTFS partition I wish to hide, making it easily accessible to anyone booted up in SUSE.Changing the attributes to the associated files to "hidden" is not an option. I need that secret partion to remain unknown.How can I hide, deny access to, or prevent that particular NTFS partition from automatically being mounted in Suse? Once that security issue is resolved I look forward to using Suse again, like the other people do in our home.
I recently changed linux distros and switched to Karmic. In my earlier setup /home was on a separate partition.
After switching to karmic I added the following line to /etc/fstab to mount my /home partition which was on /dev/sda6 (ubuntu is on /dev/sda7) /dev/sda6 /home ext3 nodev,nosuid 0 2
After rebooting I saw that while earlier I had an empty desktop now my desktop shows the content of my home folder.
On googling I found out about how I could change the nautilus preferences.
I used gconf-editor to change: apps>nautlius>preferences>desktop_is_home_dir to false
I also changed: apps>nautlius>desktop>volumes_visible to false.
However on rebooting I still see all the contents of my home folder on the desktop.
What do I need to do to show the Desktop as blank (as in point to ~/Desktop rather than point to ~)?
I know I do fdisk -l /dev/sda and see all the partitions on that disk, and I know I can do mount and see all the mounted partitions. Is there a way to do both at the same time? Ideally what I'd like to see is the output of fdisk -l but with an additional column that shows if a partition is mounted or not.

View 3 Replies View RelatedMounted second hard disk still report 0 bytes even when files are already deleted in rhel5 . I already checked the lost+found and trash . It only happen that disk space on deleted files cannot be recovered after the disk reach full capacity , but if it does not reach yet its full capacity , deleting files will recover the disk space . The format of the disk I have mounted is ext3 also have tried ntfs using fuse but the same problem , once allowed to reach 0 bytes I can no longer recover space with deleting files and had to reformat and restore the backup

However, when I try mount those folders this error occurs (OSX): 'Volume X could not be mounted'.I checked that smb as wells as xinetd is running and that the firewall ports are open (also tried deactivating the firewall with no success).
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have v 10.10 running the following (and I still have no idea how I got this all working). Myth, Squeeze server, X10 control system for the house, Virtualbox (where I run some windows stuff) and a general file and print service. It has 5 disk drives attached
1 - system disk
5- external usb to back up data to
2,3,4 - 2 tb drives in a raid config
I just restarted the server and the raid volume has not mounted. I looked in the webmin interface and the device is there but it doesn't seem to have the partitions attached. Again in webmin, the partitions seem to be on each of the drives. I used crash-plan to back up the data and music, but not the video, so I would prefer not to have to rebuild the lot if I don't have to. I really don't want to re build the lot out of my lack of experience with Linux. Is there an easy (ish) way of putting the raid back together to see if it's just dropped its config and the data is in tact (or can be rebuild from two of the three drives).
I have an iSCSI device that is large, ~17TB usable, and I've created an XFS file system at the device level. I mount the device no problem and am able to touch and remove files without issue. I start my application and within about 5-10 minutes I start seeing the following entries appear in /var/log/messages

I plan to install a server using LVM. I thought a partition schema where /boot would be in an ext4 partition while / /usr /var /home and /opt would be in the LVM. My question is: if I'm putting / into the LVM, is it necessary to divide /usr /var /home and /opt into different logical volumes? If I divide them, would it become harder to maintain when new disk space has to be added to the volume group?

As you can see they now show up as inactive. And for some reason sdi1 and sdh1 are not even listed. What can I do to get them back? To make matters worse I placed some important data on them, and even if I was clever enough to keep an extra copy on another drive, guess which drive that was? So, I need to get them activated as is (at least so I can get the data of them) before I can rebuild them from scratch. I'm running Mandriva 2010.1 and rated tehm using the built in disk partitioner.
There is a disk 500 gb, it is broken on /boot and on /root and on /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Whether prompt it is possible to redistribute a disk without loss of data namely it is necessary to make/boot and two equivalent on disk volume.
