Ubuntu :: How To Disable Boot Time Disk Checks
Aug 1, 2011These days I see the disk check that is popping up when my Ubuntu is booting up quite frequently. It says 'press C to cancel' but C (or Shift C or CTRL C or CTRL ALT C) does not have any effect. Pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE reboots but again ends up in the vicious loop of disk check. How to bypass it? When I need to critically enter the desktop for an urgent pressing info waiting for 20 to 25 minutes disk check is kind of difficult.

May 11, 2010Since upgrading (fresh install) to Lucid, I've been having to go through disk checks about once or twice a week on boot. I'm not sure why Lucid thinks it needs to check my disk so often. I looked into it a bit, and found a command that was supposed to stop disk checks happening so often.
Code: sudo tune2fs -i 2w `mount | awk '$3 == "/" {print $1}'` is supposed to set it to 2 weeks. I used "/home" too as I have home on a separate partition and didn't want that to be checked too. All was fine until I booted up to find another disk check today. It can sometimes take over half an hour to finish and C to cancel doesn't always work either.
I always shutdown cleanly, unless Ubuntu completely locks up, which happens maybe once every six months (although it did happen yesterday, but I have rebooted it a few times since then with no checks happening until just now). Is there a way to just disable checks completely? I wouldn't mind running them manually every now and then, I just don't want to do it as often as Lucid does.
Ubuntu :: 10.4 Checks Disks After Every Boot?
May 15, 2010Ever since my upgrade from 9.10 to 10.4, every time I reboot the system it does a full disk check. /var/log/boot.log tells me that fsck thinks that the file systems contain errors or that it wasn't cleanly unmounted. And yet, it doesn't seem to actually find errors, and a clean reboot starts another check (again with it thinking something is dirty). I dual-boot with Windows, and reboot from there with the same problem.Again, all of this is new with 10.4 and was not happening with 9.10.Is there a way to find out when/how/why the disks are not being unmounted cleanly?

May 21, 2011I've been an Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit user for one year. My Ubuntu distro is installed on an ext2 file system. Occasionally, I experience disk checks during boot without any system freeze or power loss.Sometimes, once reboot, the system works fine but Evolution Mail requests a new account, as if it was used for the very first time.Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

All this happened for the first time after running luckybackup to fusion the old files of one home directory under EXT4 with the new files from my notebook (ext3, Opensuse 11.1 KDE3) in order to come to a unified home. But then the system did not boot any more. I tried to change the owner but some files did not have write access (not even as root, "the file does not exist"). So I thought I might have a a file system problem.
So I thought: unmount the /dev/sdb1 and then do a fschk on it. Runs and was perfect. So I did run it with forcing to control inode per inode.
No error.
So I thought: you screwed up the system. I then decided to reinstall OpensSuse11.3 from the scratch and create the same user for home. I formatted the rest (/swap /boot /root) and left only /home. Installation runs brilliantly, all ok, it comes to the login..................

I'm reluctant to do as advised by the output and run e2fsck -b because it is not an ext2 filesystem.
Although I can still enter runlevel 5, it doesn't seem to recognise mouse and keyboard input in KDE so my system is effectively redundant at the mo. For this reason any short term workarounds are welcome, but a fix is needed. This problem is part of a longer saga to do with recovering a Windows Vista installation which started failing to boot. I have used both Vista and SUSE tools to try and recover my bootloader to no avail, and this has been the result. If more detail about this is needed please ask and I can explain what I have done.

Jul 16, 2010I'm testing OpenSUSE 11.3 on a server and I'd like to disable the write cache on all of my drives. In Ubuntu Server I was able to accomplish this with hdparm by adding the appropriate settings to /etc/hdparm.conf
As far as I can find the only thing that OpenSUSE offers is /etc/sysconfig/ide which allows you to force particular DMA modes. I could just put the hdparm commands in /etc/init.d/boot.local but I'd prefer to do it the right way if there is a right way to do this in OpenSUSE.

May 18, 2011I am very new to linux, and I have a question regarding the filesystem check (fsck). The power recently went out and when I tried to restart linux the following error appears:
*/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced it then goes on to say..
*An error occured during the file system check. Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot when you leave the shell. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue) I wasn't sure what to do, but checked some other online forums and they suggested running fsck manually - so I typed in the root password - and used the command, "fsck -A -V ; echo == $? ==" it then gave the following message
*WARNING!!! Running e2fsck on a mounted filesystem may cause SEVERE filesystem damage
*Would you like to continue (y/n)
Again, I wasn't sure what to do so i just checked no. I then manually turned off the computer and was prompted at the beginning to press Alt-3. I was brought to another screen and it informed me one of the drives was degraded and suggested rebuilding the array. I tried doing this, but it still brings me back to the original error of, "/dev/sda1 contains file system w/errors, check forced," and the process continues.
Also, when I tried to rebuild the array, I didn't backup any of the data on our home directory before doing this (which was probably a big mistake). After being prompted to type the root password, I was able to give the ls command and look at all the directories...the home directory where our data was stored was empty and I am afraid I may have lost some information. Is there a possibility that data was lost when I was trying to rebuild using the old drives?

Apr 16, 2011I have been trying to install openSUSE 11.4 on a Windows 7 laptop, but the suggested partitioning sucks and I lack the skills to do it manually. I would like to format the laptop drive, give up Windows for good and do a fresh install of openSUSE 11.4. openSUSE wants me to keep Windows boot. But I do not want it!
I have tried for an hour now. Can't format, there is no options for that in the openSUSE 11.4 install. There are expert options, but I really do not know how many partitions does openSUSE require. For some strange reason openSUSE wants to keep my Windows partitions. WHY? And if I delete all of the partitions, it wont automatically recreate the needed partitions for openSUSE, it only displays errors and won't let me continue.
For the love of God, do I have to open the laptop, remove the hard drive, put it in another computer and format there?
Why isn't there an option for removing all partitions, formatting the drive and installing openSUSE?
How to disable the forced Win 7 dual boot openSUSE offers and do a fresh install with only openSUSE 11.4 WITHOUT ANY WINDOWS DUAL BOOT BS.
By the way, since my laptops internal DVD is broken and I will not repair it until my daughter is old enough to handle optical drives, I use USB DVD and it won't give me any boot options but starts installation right away. This is also strange.

B:When I restart or shutdown, the screen flashes repeatedly and gets some garbled colors along the top before finally rebooting looks like windows ME or something).This vostro has an intel x4500HD vid chipset in it.
C.How do I get into gnome configuration editor to turn on Metacity compositing? Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor doesn't do it. I don't do compiz, but need compositing.
D.I need to install Chromium Browser as it sync my bookmarks.I have RPMforge enabled btw also...how can I do that? I.e. rpm repo for chromium?
This will help me get off to a running start so I can get up to speed on CentOS..

In this recovery shell, only certain tools work. ls complains about "libacl.so.1", and the filesystem is still read-only. It completes, much quicker, but the system remains unbootable. I could probably boot into the Ubuntu live-cd to get read-write access, but I wouldn't know what to do.I don't know how I would go about reinstalling the base Ubuntu packages without write access to the hd, or through the live cd.

Jan 2, 2011I've searched the internet all over, but somehow I didn't find a solution (I REALLY hope there is one :/). Of course I might have missed something, I found a lot of similar, but not quite identical problems.Today, when I tried to start up my system I was quite shocked, as my Ubuntu 10.10 didn't boot. The error I got was "No init found. Try passing init=bootarg".I didn't have any problems booting Windows XP, which I had installed alongside Ubuntu, so I burned a Live CD and tried to find out what was the matter.
As it appears, my Linux partition (/dev/sda5) is broken. I can't access it via Nautilus, as I always get a "A job is pending on /dev/sda5" error. Mounting it via terminal doesn't seem to work either.When trying to check the filesystem, either in Disk Utility or in GParted, I instantly get an error that the "device is busy" and (again) that "a job is pending".I tried to set a boot flag on /dev/sda5 (it wasn't there before), but this didn't help neither with accessing the partition from the Live CD norI tried to run the boot info script I found somewhere in a forum post, but it is just hanging itself up as soon as it starts checking /dev/sda5.
And "sudo mke2fs -n /dev/sda5" just gives me a "/dev/sda5 is apparently in use by the system" error.By the way I did all these steps just byollowing advices in other threads, so I do not necessarily understand what I did there.e .. is there a way I can get my files back? I would really, really hate having lost all that since my last backup is 3-4 months old (yeah, yeah, I know) and I have some quite rtant data on that filesystem.While there seems to be a big problem in that NOTHING seems to be working, GParted still recognizes the partition and how much of the disk space is in use .. so not everything can be lost - or am I wrong?
Debian :: Boot Hangs - Waiting For Root Filesystem
Dec 9, 2010I installed Debain Lenny as a dual boot with ubuntu 10.10. Chose not to install Grub legacy in the mbr or in any partition because I thought grub2 could handle it. All went well, updated grub2 in ubuntu and it found Debian, but when I try to boot into Debain it hangs at - waiting for root filesystem. I've searched, but can't fathom why this is happening, much less how to fix it without just reinstalling it.
