General :: Having A Firewall / Proxy That Has An Extremely High Load - No Apparent Activity?

Aug 19, 2010

I have a firewall / proxy that has an extremely high load, but I can't figure out what's using it. No real cpu usage, the disks are sleeping except for a little log activity, it's on gigabit ethernet and not close to maxing out... Command link stuff runs fast, nothing seems slow, yet the load is sky-high. IME this kind of load is associated with a lot of disk I/O, but that's not the case here. What could be causing this, what else factors into the load?

OpenSUSE Install :: Extremely High CPU Usage?

Mar 18, 2011

However, I would like to ask if anyone else is experiencing Higher than normal CPU usage with openSuSE 11.4 PR?? My system, which is probably similar to others, increases the air flow with the fan on the CPU when it is working hard. Mine gets rather noisy. (don't have it on the floor, but right next to me) This fan speed increase has been lots more prevalent in the newest version of openSuSE.

Have also used 'top' and it looks like xorg is one of the biggest hogs. However, when I use VMware it goes into hyper drive a lot.

Fedora Hardware :: Diagnose System Lockup - Extremely High Loads?

Dec 23, 2010

Where does one look in terms of diagnostics after a system lockup and hard reset? For example, one of my computers, running Fedora 14 i686, has taken to locking up quite a bit lately. My only way out is a hard reset. Now, once the thing is booted back up I'd like to try to figure out where the problem lies. Where do I look? Will any of the log files reveal anything relevant to me? If so, what sort of things would I be looking for. Keywords?

This same box also locked up when I had Fedora 14 x86_64 installed. I had read that there were some issues with the newer 64 bit kernels that were causing lockups and / or extremely high loads. This is why I switched back to the 32 bit version, 2 days ago to be exact. The box gets little use. It's a toy really and not my main "daily use" computer. It is, however, running folding@home. Maybe that's where the problem is. About 15 minutes ago I called home and had my wife reset the box, then I logged in from work and stopped the folding service. I'll have to see if it locks up without folding running. Folding was running on this box when I had the 64 bit version installed also.

Ubuntu :: Defeat HP's Efforts To Force It's Customers To Purchase The Extremely High?

Apr 28, 2011

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, with a wireless HP j4680. That prints on occassion. I've tricked it once by creating a new printer System/Admin/printers, setting the "new" printer to default then deleting the old printer. Not working that way this time. I've search the old forums, a lot of activity in 2007-2008 but nothing since.

Is there a way to defeat HP's efforts to force it's customers to purchase the extremely high, close to 50.00 dollars in my area.

I'm running Slackware 13 with a custom kernel based off of 2.6.32.3. I tend to leave my system on 24/7, as well as my web browser. Originally it was Firefox and now it is Google's Chrome. Usually about a day of leaving the web browser open my HD activity spikes so high that I can barely do anything on the system until I kill the web browser. This has been happening with both Firefox AND Chrome! As soon as the browser processes are killed, the system returns back to normal.

General :: High Load During Firefox Downloads

Nov 14, 2010

During downloads, the top command shows the Firefox process at 100% CPU. Yesterday I tried to download an .iso image. After a few hours the Firefox window would not refresh nor would it respond to input. I tried the wget command. It used negligible CPU time and completed in 28 minutes.

This problem is easy to reproduce because it happens every time I download a file in Firefox. It also happens when I use a fresh profile to run Firefox without any extensions or plugins.

This is Firefox 3.6.12 on Fedora 14.

- The disk utilization (all the disks) is near 0, as the result of the IOSTAT
- There is no blocked processes (as a result of VMSTAT).
- I have two processors (dual core) , the maximum load average should be something around 4.

Ubuntu Servers :: Proxy To Check Network Activity

Does that handle streaming requests and such as well? This so I can see the source of some media that's being played in flash or pps.tv

Networking :: Tuning For High Throughput Reverse-proxy Server?

Jan 18, 2011

I have an enormous quadcore machine with 16gb ram and dual gigabit NICs. It used to be for MySQL but we have upgraded the whole database infrastructure so now this server is left floating. I had the great idea of turning this into a reverse-proxy (using apache mod_proxy) and it really handles a ton of requests. But I have a feeling that we are not getting the most use out of what it can offer.

Our traffic consists of a few thousand very small (less than 10 byte) ajax calls per second, and frequently I find we are running out of kernel allocated network stack to handle all the requests. Often we get the kern.log warning "possible SYN flooding on port 80. Sending cookies." and other things like this. Obviously we are not getting SYN flooded, we just have very high demand.

So far I have found a few kernel tuning guides to tell the kernel to allocate more of the base system memory for networking but every guide I have found has been for the purpose of increasing the performance between WAN links (direct backbones between offices etc) and usually with very large file sizes being the priority. One such example (and great) write up is here:

cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-tcp-tuning/

I was hoping some people could provide further input, such as along the lines of disabling nf_conntrack (to speed up socket set up/tear down time) or anything that will speed up a high throughput proxy like mine. Any links to studies or benchmarks between different configurations or hardware gets extra points!

Server :: Act As Firewall / Proxy - Do Bandwidth Management?

Jun 17, 2011

I wanted to implement a server for a small network, but am a bit in-experienced. The server that I want to use should be able to do load-balancing (two connections) and also act as firewall/proxy. And also it should be able to do some bandwidth management. The network that its going to serve has two parts. One part of the network should be served, say during day time, and the other during night time. The one that is going to be served at night-time should not have access to internet during day-time, but should have access to, say local mirror-server. I am a bit confused what software/hardware to use. I am planing to use EndianFirewall, but since I don't have experience, don't know if it can do all that I need (?).

Server :: Apache Load VERY High - How To Fix It

Apr 2, 2011

on an old server of mine, as soon as apache is started, the load average that I get to see with 'top', that normally is under 1, now just steadily climbs up and up to easily 150, in fact disabling the webserver from serving any webpage. I've checked netstat, and I'll try to upload the output. The ip's that are in there I've blocked with iptables. But that doesn't help or so it seems. I see nothing weird in the error logs. As soon as I stop apache, the load goes back to normal. As soon as I (re)start it, up it goes again. What can cause this and how do I get rid of it?

p.s. It's an old server, fedora3 or so, and I've got a new one to which I'll transfer the domains, but until that's completely done, I'd like this one to run as it has for years...

Ubuntu :: 10.04: High Load Average At Idle

May 5, 2010

Since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, my system is noticeably less responsive and exhibits halting behavior for at times 10s of seconds. There is nothing obvious in the various logs that I can find. The only objective indication I can find that demonstrates that something is seriously wrong is that my load average never drops below 0.5 and is often over 1.5, even at idle. In this situation, top/ps/whatever shows very few processes running (usually just top). This suggests to me that either the new kernel scheduler is horrible or that something new is resulting in blocking I/O or other uninterruptable sleeps.Typical top output:

Quote:

top - 12:18:01 up 1 day, 49 min, 5 users, load average: 1.42, 0.86, 0.71
Tasks: 262 total, 1 running, 261 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie

Ubuntu :: Unusually High System Load

Jul 2, 2010

i've been using 10.04 since may and it's been good to me thus far. BUT recently, i've been experiencing unusually high system loads. it will happen at random it seems. for instance, it just did it a few minutes ago when i turned on and mounted a external firewire drive. i also had ogmrip open, but NOT running as well as transmission and pidgin. yesterday, i was encoding a rather big movie with ogmrip and around 25%, the system load quickly increased to 10 and held there until i force quit ogmrip. it went back to normal after the force quit.

a previous night, i was installing the popular ubuntu themes via the terminal. at the same time, i was also using ogmrip and the system load shot up during the download/install and held there the rest of the night. sooo...unless it's somehow related to ogmrip i don't know what's going on. it even did it when ogmrip WAS NOT processing any video, just simply open.

Server :: Apache Message: Load Is Too High

Jul 28, 2010

I have a apache cluster with more than 10 nodes, based on ldirector and heartbeat. The problem is that I cannot predict if my nodes will handle the traffic in the next day (hosting a website based on daily campaigns). So I decided to limit the number of active connection on the nodes (from apache), but this is only a temporary solution. I want to create a page that will appear to users that are getting over the limit. Has anyone made this before? Can you tell me how is it possible (I don't want a how to, just a starting point to study)? I think squid can do it, but I don't know how to search for it. To give you an example of what I want, you can see the same thing on deviantart.

CentOS 5 :: Determine What Is Causing High Load

Sep 12, 2011

I am running a CentOS 5.6 32 bit installation under VMWare ESXi and have been experiencing some very high load values from time to time. The server is running multiple installations of gameservers, and the load fluctuates from around 1 to 9, with more or less the same amount of players playing (give or take 5-10 of a possible 80). I've been running DStat with almost all possible metrics, and, except for the large fluctuations in load, nothing else out of the ordinary seems to happen when load is rising. (Log data can be provided, if anyone wants to see it). Disk IO, Network throughput, memory consumption, CPU usage, process count, all stay at the same levels when the load is 1 as when it is 9. How I can begin to troubleshoot this, and find out why the load goes to such high values?
