I have ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition on my usb. But, when I go to install it, by restarting and then clicking F12 (is F12 the right one?) and the menu comes up. So i select boot with removable disk, but then it just resumes to boot as windows as it normally does. I need to get this menu right so I can install Ubuntu...My computer is a Dell inspiron mini 10 (1012).

I just installed the broadcom-wl and broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop packages from the packman repository. Then there is a new entry in the bootmanager menu. Using that one, WLAN works fine.By the way: Can somebody explain me the difference between the broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop, broadcom-wl-kmp-default, broadcom-wl-kmp-pae, broadcom-wl-kmp-xen packages? I did not find any documentation about that.

I use it on a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook (that boots Mac OS X from its SSD). An ubuntu persistent liveusb works just great for occasional linux development and testing, but ubuntu 9.10 will be EOL next year, and I want to stay current.

After I've booted the liveusb, under the network menu I see this:

A menu appears that looks like a PCI card with a lock on it. I select the only item under that menu, "Install Drivers". This gives a dialog that says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system. Proprietary drivers do not have public source code..." etc. Under Ubuntu 9.10, I could at this point select "Broadcom STA wireless driver" and click the "Activate" button, and it would work. So I did that in 10.04.1.
It says, "Downloading and installing driver..."
While it's doing this, the "kerneloops" menu item appears. Then a dialog that says,
Sorry, the package "bcmwl-kernel-source 5.60.48.36 +bdcom-0ubuntu3" failed to install or upgrade.
Then another dialog that says
SystemError: installArchives() failed.
What the heck is happening here?
Well, it turns out that the error messages are wrong. I restarted and the DM9/ubuntu 10.04.1 was able to connect to the wireless network.
tl;dr: Proprietary wireless driver installation works, but it claims that it doesn't.
I have a Dell Mini 9 with a failed SSD. I created a bootable USB drive from the Ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386.iso. It boots up the Dell Mini ok. If after selecting 'try ubuntu' from the Live USB and setting the desktop and wireless up, is there a way I could image that config on the same or different USB. It would be like installing Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB device instead of a HD. The Mini has 1G RAM.

I'm trying to install Photran for Eclipse 3.6. I've managed to get 3.6 and it works but the next step involves choosing a package that I just can't see because my screen resolution is too small.
I recently installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix on my Dell Inspiron Mini 10, and for some reason it isn't detecting any wireless networks. The wireless works perfectly fine when I boot to Windows XP on the netbook, but not when I'm using Ubuntu. I tried troubleshooting using this htmlAt the "check for device recognition" step, the terminal tells me that it's disabled, but as far as I can tell there isn't a physical switch that allows me to turn the wireless on or off, and again, it works perfectly fine when I use XP. It's great, except that the videos won't display properly in Ubuntu Netbook Remix (Lucid) on my Dell Mini 10v.I've tried using Gstreamer (Banshee), Xine (Totem-xine), and MPlayer (GNOME MPlayer). These all should have worked, which makes me think something may be wrong either with the files themselves or my computer. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get the special keys on my bluetooth keyboard (Dell Y-RAQ-DEL2, which came with my Dell Inspiron 530) to work under Ubuntu (10.04). Specifically things like the calculator button, volume knob etc.
I've tried various keyboard mapping in the Preferences > Keyboard menu, but the system doesn't seem to be able to "see" any of these special keys.
On the Ubuntu website, under the alternate downloads, there is a link for 11.04 netbook torrent download but clicking on the link gives an "unobtainable" message. On the "error" page, Chromium provided a link to the ubuntu page with all the 11.04 versions and checking through those there is not a netbook version.
Does this mean that there will be no netbook version of 11.04 and the desktop version will be OK on a netbook or is it simply that it is not available yet? I am intending to upgrade my current Acer Aspire One to 11.04 and am considering a clean install rather than upgrading via the update manager. I have downloaded the desktop version just in case.

I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix edition onto a Acer Aspire one netbook. I am attempting to install the OS from a 16GB PNY usb drive w/ the usb-universal installer and ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix .ISO
The reoccurring problem that I am encountering is that when I boot from the USB-drive and begin to install everything seems to be working, and then it is stuck at the menu where it asks who are you?; and of course i have filled in everything asked and at the bottom where you can look at what its doing in the terminal/detail section all it says is ready when you are, and the forward tap is unselectable.
