Software :: Pointer Freezes Everything On Ubuntu 9.10 DELL Latitude E6510?

Jun 24, 2010

Partitioned Hard Disk I set up Ubuntu 9.10 (10.4 would hang before installation).Computer works for a few minutes and then freezes (pointer and the rest: Ctrl Back, Ctrl Del, Ctrl f2 do not respond). The graphics card is Intel HD GraphicsRAM 8GbHD 500GbLED Display (1920 x 1080) (perhaps too much?)It seems a memory problem:testing memory on windows is ok. On Linux the memory test declare "too small lower memory". No problems with windows (I tried also wubi, independently, but it hangs immediately going blank after upgrading packages). Ubuntu 9.10 works perfectly on my older pc

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Not Working - Dell Latitude E6510

Mar 23, 2011

I've recently partitioned off a section of my hard drive to run Ubuntu from and I'm having trouble with the network connections. In my device manager of Windows 7, it lists that my network adapters are

1. DW1520 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card

2. Intel(R) 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection

Is there something I'm not doing right in order to allow me to connect to a wireless connection? Are these devices even enabled in Linux systems?

General :: Booting PCLOS 2010.11 Live CD On A Dell Latitude E6510?

Dec 6, 2010

When I boot from the CD, it starts to boot and then continously repeats:

Initializing gfx code...

gfxboot:

It stops on boot for about 10 seconds each time then gfxboot for not even a second before the cycle continues. I have tried more than one CD, so I don't think that is the issue. It even did the exact same thing when I tried it on PCLOS 2010.10. Both versions I tried were KDE. trying to figure out how to get past this.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dell Latitude E6510 Installation Black Screen?

Oct 16, 2010

I've installed ubuntu 10.04 onto my Dell Latitude e6510 (through the wubi installer), but I can't get anything except a black screen. I'm pretty new to ubuntu, but after a bit of looking around at graphics issues I found a bunch of boot parameters and tried different combinations of them. i915.modeset=0 Gave me the purple loading screen, until the screen went black and I got flashing caps lock and scroll lock lights.xforcevesa gave me a completely black screen -- not receiving power at all

I also tried noapci, acpi=off, irqpoll, and pci=routeirq as parameters. None of those had any success.I've also tried letting ubuntu boot with a black screen until I heard the African drums and pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go into the console, but the screen stayed black then as well.

Fedora Installation :: Installing 14 On Dell E6510 With UEFI Enabled ?

Jan 20, 2011

I opened a bug for this one in December, but it's not getting much attention as yet, so I thought maybe the crew here could take a whack at it. Here's the text, slightly modified with minor clarifying updates.

Description of problem: When booting from CD burned with Fedora-14-x86_64-netinst.iso, grub starts but when handing off to kernel, text appears in upper left corner of screen and system locks up, requiring power-off to be performed to return functionality.

In testing, grub itself has always worked without visible flaw, and the various built-in functions are accessible (menu editing, command line, etc.). It's just once tries to go any further that it breaks.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): unknown

How reproducible: Always reproducible

Steps to Reproduce:Download Fedora-14-x86_64-netinst.iso and burn to disc Select optical drive from Dell Latitude E6510 notebook from boot options menu Allow boot process to proceed

Actual results: System lock after displaying the following text:

Code:

Additional info: System is running BIOS revision A06 (latest as of today). CPU is Intel Core i7 Q720, and memory total is 4GB. Grub identifies 640K lower and 3,339,004K upper memory (commas inserted for clarity). Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit installation performed properly in UEFI mode.

Ubuntu :: Distro For Dell Latitude CPi D300XT?

Jun 19, 2011

I resued a Dell Latitude CPi D300XT that was getting tossed and have XP on it running a little slow but decent for basic web surfing. I saw a ..... video of someone that had Ubuntu Minimal with LXDE running on it. I could not find that but tryed Puppy Linux, Damn Small Linux, and Ubuntu 9 to 11.04 CD's in it and could not get them to to boot into the CD. I even just set the Dell to only boot from CD/DVD and would not boot any of them.

Does anyone know which Ubuntu or Linux distro I could try on a Dell Latitude CPi D300XT? The specs are Intel Pentium II 300 MHz, 256MB of RAM and 20 Gig Hard Drive.

Ubuntu :: Disable Built In Mic In Dell Latitude E6400

I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 in my Dell Latitude E6400. Everything works great except that I cannot disable the built in microphone. I have even disabled from the BIOS but the mic continues working, this is really annoying as I do lots of calling from this computer for my work.

I have played around with the alsamixer and the sound preferences but I haven't been able to disable it or at least lower its volume.

My headset is plugged in to the mic jack and it works fine. The problem is that both the headset and the internal mic are working at the same time.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 StartX Does Not Work On Dell Latitude E5510

Jan 10, 2011

I'm trying to install the magnificent ubuntu 10.10 on my brand new Dell LATITUDE E5510. The installation works fine. I installed it with a working internet connexion ... so the drivers should be there. Then when booting, the GUI does not start I get the console instead...

I tried several things:
- run startx --> I get a blank screen where even CTRL+ALT+F1 does not work anymore

Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
--> just returns without anything on the screen, no error no nothing

- run in failsafeX mode, I get:
Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself.

Then I get the login page but it doesn't go any further, when I type my login/password it comes back to the login page...

When I do:
Code:
lspci | grep VGA
I get :
VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev02)

That's all I could see... apart from that I'm not getting any error messages and I'm really stuck.. I'm running on intel Celeron 32 bit, I have checked the checksum of my CD...

General :: Sound Has Totally Gone On Dell Latitude Computer

Apr 7, 2011

A friend lent me their Ubuntu book but I can't understand it and could not find anything about the sound suddenly going from the speaker on Monday night. I went to Sony Ericsson's site to check something on my account and loud music suddenly started blaring out so I pressed the Fn button and End which muted it. However, I forgot to take it off before closing down for the night and as of Tuesday morning I have no sound. Would me leaving mute on all night have screwed something up or has it just suddenly gone? I am so upset as I cannot afford to get another laptop as not working and this is my last resort since my original Compaq one died.

I appreciate any "Helpful" solutions. Not in techy but layman's terms please as I won't understand. Also if you do reply, I am in the UK and also don't get notifications so I am not being rude if I can't get back to you quickly. I will be going to bed now.

Ubuntu Networking :: Dell Latitude CPx Dynex Wireless Card Not Working

Mar 18, 2011

I have a 10 year old Dell Latitude CPx that has no ethernet or modem ports, and the only way to connect to the internet is the Dynex Wireless G DX-BNBC PCMCIA card. It came with Windows 98, and I put Xubuntu on it for a while. I believe it was Xubuntu 8 or 9. Back then I had no clue what to do whatsoever, so after a couple weeks removed it and put Windows 2000 on it. It worked, I used it for a while, but it was slow and 2000 took up a lot of space on the 12gb hard drive after all the updates. I left it forgotten and gathering dust for the past year.

Then a few days ago I discovered Lubuntu 10.10, and from what I've seen so far it is definitely a lot more compact and faster than 2000. However, the wireless card still won't work. It's somewhat recognized, because whenever I unplug it and plug it in a bubble pops up saying "you've been disconnected from the network"... which is odd, since it never says I'm connected, and says that the firmware is missing for this card. Anyway, I discovered something this time. By running "lspci -nn | grep -i 14e4":

iwconfig:

eth0 no wireless extensions.
lspci -n:

Debian Configuration :: Netgear WG511v2 On A Dell Latitude C600

Apr 1, 2010

I've installed Debian on a Dell Latitude C600 and I've managed to get all of the hardware functioning except the WiFi adapter. The laptop is using a Netgear WG511v2 PCMCIA interface. I've extracted the WG511v2.INF and WG511v2XP.SYS files and I believe they are successfully installed using NDISWRAPPER.

The WiFi adapter's green LED flickers and the yellow LED periodically flashes, which would seem to indicate that the adapter is attempting to connect to a network.

I believe the problem that I'm having is related to configuring the wlan0 interface with the proper security credentials to attach to the WiFi network. I'm using WPA2 with AES for encrypting. The key is 64 hexadecimal characters.

how to configure the wlan0 interface with the proper security credentials. The Network Manager applet only offers WPA2 Personal as a configuration option.

Fedora Installation :: Live Cd Install On Dell Latitude D600 ?

Mar 30, 2010

Just did a fresh install of F12 on the D600, and a couple of problems. The network was working during the install, but after does not see ethernet nor wireless.

The only straying I did from a default install was to manually create partitions, making one for swap and the rest is / on ext4. Seemed fine installing and booting.

Also the touchpad and mouse settings are messed up, buttons reversed, click events from the touchpad showing "clickdown" but not acting as if the click was released.

ONE BIG COMPLAINT: I see selinux doesn't come with an easy way to disable. How is it disabled with F12?

For now I'm in a hurry, so I'm going back to F11 - past OS installing and booting ok include Ubuntu 8.04, 9.10, F5, F7, F9, F10 and XP to name a few.
