Ubuntu :: Dell 1545 With 10.04 - Installing Windows XP?
Sep 25, 2010
I have to install a Windows XP on my laptop. I started to install Windows, but after the first step (before booting Windows from hard disk) I received Disk Error at booting time. I reinstalled grub and everything is fine with Ubuntu, but I can't boot the Windows partition to finish installing this OS.

I have Dell 1545 pre-loaded with Ubuntu 9.04. It has Oracle VM VirtualBox installed, for which I run Ubuntu 10.04. I have downloaded drivers for Ubuntu 10.04 to interface with Lexmark X6650, and can easily print documents from Ubuntu 10.04. However, I cannot figure out how to access the scan function.

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10, Dell Inspiron 1545. I have the NDISwrapper installed, and the driver shows up in "Hardware Drivers" as activated (Broadcom STA wireless driver) it also shows up in "Windows Wireless Drivers" (bcmwl6) but it still won't allow me to connect wirelessly.

I am having trouble in getting the wireless up in Ubunto 10.04. Under Wireless Networks it says "wireless disabled". I have a dual boot with Windows 7, installed Ubunto with the help of Wubi installer. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 1545, with a 64 bit architecture.I have already done checking and enabling the wireless driver by going to System- Administration-Hardware Drivers and choosing Broadcom STA driver.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with wireless card Dell wireless 1397 802.11g. It was working fine with Windows and Ubuntu 9.04 (I've got the two OS installed alongside). But as soon as I upgraded my Ubuntu to version 10.4 I realised it lost its wireless connection! I updated the system, the hardware driver for Broadcom STA wireless driver is activated and in use (according to Ubuntu Hardware drivers checker) but the fact is that I can only connect on the Internet if I hook the net cable on it, when I run the mouse over internet connection icon at the topright side of the monitor I see "no network" message and when I left click on it the option "wireless network" it's disabled and gray. How can I get my wireless card back working?

I am using Ubuntu right now. But I wanted to install Fedora 12 on my Dell inspiron 1545 laptop. My questions are can I use a live cd if available for fedora 12 and then install it on my laptop like we can do for ubuntu. Are all the drivers available automatically installed during installation.
The problem I faced my last installation with fedora 11 was that I could not get the wireless installed and I was unsuccessful in installing the wireless drivers using ndis wrapper or b43-legacy or something.
Can you give me a detailed link which could allow me to install the wireless drivers and also the video drivers for my laptop. The problem I am facing with my ubuntu 10.04 is that it is slow, the flash plugin is worst i guess, some of the flash videos are very slow.
Taking all of these into account can someone suggest me a good operating system. I am pretty much interested in learning linux rather than just using it like a windows operating system. I am considering, fedora 12, suse 11.2, linuxmint, centos, mandriva. Which one could be a best possible for my installation.
As I am not willing to purchase a dvd for these linux flavors can I use my flashdrive to install.

I'm an experienced user in Windows but a complete novice in Linux. I have a dual boot with ubuntu and 7 ultimate, the thing is that Ubuntu doesn't recognize my wi-fi card. Windows Device Manager tells me that my card is "Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Minicard" made by Broadcom. I don't know if my problem is with a driver or incompatible hardware, the ISO is perfect because I already installed linux on every computer in my house.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04.1 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop, but I can't connected to the Internet with a wired or wireless connection. I have a BT Home Hub 2 wireless router. I can connect to the Internet when running Windows Vista, but not with Ubuntu.
I tried installing the Broadcom STA driver off of the live disk, which initially seemed to work. However, I still couldn't connect to the Internet and when I clicked on System > Administration > Hardware Drivers, there weren't any proprietary drivers to install or that had been installed. Also, when I reboot, Ubuntu tries to connect to my network automatically but always fails. That's what makes me think that a driver has been installed, but just isn't the right one or isn't working.

The kernel-PAE-2.6.30.5-43 upgrade will not boot on my Dell 1545 notebook. The initialization stops and the systems freezes right at the point that the login prompt should appear. I do not have invidia drivers. I have Intel video drivers. Also there is a loud 'pop' in the sound system early in the initialization sequence. For the time being, I have removed the 2.6.30.5-43 upgrade via yum.

I have a Dell 1545 laptop with ubuntu 9.1 32-bit installed (the 64-bit had a bug with the wireless drivers which is why I have not used it). Initially, the laptop worked well with the wireless (a sky router with WPA security) but now, the wireless signal drops after a couple of minutes of usage. I have to reboot the laptop or sometimes reboot the router as well to regain the wireless signal. I am using the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver.
I have an older dell inspiron 6400 as well with the same OS and driver and it works perfectly without any problems for hours / days.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card and a Marvell Yukon 88e8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller, and I cannot for the life of me get the internet to connect. I've tried both wired and wireless connection. I have a PPoE connection through a Verizon FIOS Actiontek router I believe, though the PPoE part may be wrong, I had one five years ago when I first got their internet so they may have changed it. Point is that the ethernet and internet won't work, and without a working ethernet I can't fetch the right drivers for anything.
I had also tried plain ubuntu 10.04 and couldn't get them to work then either. It said 'disconnected' at first, and then said 'device not ready' There is no hardware switch but there is a key toggle. It doesn't seem to matter what state the wireless was in before booting into Ubuntu Studio, so I'm lost as to where to even start. Even though the network manager isn't there like in regular ubuntu, I assume there will be a simple way to connect to the internet once the drivers are found, right?
I've seen issues and read about fixing them, but usually it uses an ethernet connection to fix the wifi connection and, being new to linux (<50 hours worth of experience lifetime), all I managed to do trying to fix it myself was screw up the installation to the point where the laptop couldn't access the home folder and I had to reinstall. Other than that, I am usually very good at following instructions, as long as they apply to my laptop's issue I guess
The only other issue is minor, I can't seem to control the USB mouse I have, but the trackpad works fine so it's no big deal, probably a matter of downloading the mouse driver once the internet works.
Currently I do have internet access via the same laptop while booting Windows 7 (I installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a 10GB Partition with the idea of using an external HD for most data storage).
Oh and it is a 64-bit machine, the Studio version I installed is 32-bit.

I have Dell Inspiron 1545. It works fine on wired but fails on wireless.
I am using wicd as an interface.
It always comes up with the following error: Connection Failed: Bad password.
I have checked the passwords in both wicd and the router.
They seem to be the same. Am I missing something ?

Can someone guide me in configuring my wireless connection. Also, since I do not happen to have a wired connection, I am alternating between openSuse and windows everytime i need internet.

this is shan and i'm using a dell n5010 recently i installed ubuntu9.10 in my laptop and it doesn't seem to detect wireless connections, so, i googled it and downloaded a driver from broadcom and tried to install it as per the authors instructions and nothing seems to work well, the broadcom drivers are not detected in the additional drivers and when i try to install linux-wlan-ng tarballs it doesn't seem to work even, though i have gcc(i think thats it), so, i installed my windows driver through nsdgtk but it says that it is "unable to see if hardware is present" but, when i click ok on the error the wireless network applet says the hardware is present and when i click the network configuration tool it gives the error message "could not find a network configuration tool" and after configuring my network with network tools in administration it says "no wireless extensions" when i type 'iwconfig' and there is no ip address when i type "ipconfig".

Has anyone tried that? I have a Dell Studio 1555 running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 for about 2 years with almost no issues but I plan to upgrade it straight to 11.04 64-bit (using fresh install because I also want to format the HDD and partition it in a different way).
What I'm reading in the web is though a bit discouraging as there seem to be a lot of issues with 11.04 running on this particular Dell model. Quite a shame as Dell is supposed to provide good experience on Linux since they had been selling laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled (or they used to...).

I have a Dell Precison 690 system in my lab. I want to downgrade the system from RHEL 5 to RHEL $ since some of my software is not working in RHEL 5. I have the installation CD and the dell driver CD. There are 2 cd drives in the system and I am using both the CDS at the same time. But when the installation asks to select hda or hdb to get the driver cd. I put the CD in the second cd dirve which is connected to hdb. When I select hdb it is not recognizing the cd. When I skip the driver selection step I am getting the error:"No valid device were found on which to create new file"I have used the following and nothing worked:
linux noprobe
linux apci blah blah off
linux all generic blah blah blah

Just looking for some general guidance with regard to installing over the native Windows 7 (x64) installation on my new Alienware M11x with RHEL 5. I have considered other Linux OS's such as Ubuntu Desktop, Fedora, and Open SuSe. However, I am of the opinion that RHEL will - from the jump - most fluidly integrate with the Intel Core i7 architecture, 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M, and other components. I plan to convert my existing Windows XP installation into a VMWare image and run that as a guest on my Alienware M11x (instead of alternatively running RHEL 5 as a guest). However, I am concerned whether it will be possible for the guest (Windows) OS (or any guest OS for that matter) to recognize/use the Alienware sound/video/LAN/Bluetooth EDR/WWAN/etc. (as the drivers were designed for Windows 7).
