Hardware :: MP3 Player To Play All Popular File Formats

Jun 18, 2010

I am looking to buy a mp3 player that would be 100% compatible with linux. I recently returned my ipod touch because without going into details, it was a nightmare to get running in linux, it actually wouldn't run. Now that I am free again, I would like recommendations for a mp3 player with roughly the following features:

-100% compatible with linux
-compatible with windows (in case I want to transfer stuff from my gf's laptop)
-can play pretty much all the most popular file formats from linux
-application to convert files so the player can read them (I am thinking about itunes here);
-has FM radio;
-has a decent GUI (no monochrome text only interface like the ipod shuffle (?);

I would think 4GB is enough for me. I am not the kind of person to pack my player with 600GB of stuff and empty it once a year. I will probably add/remove stuff everyday. I also wouldn't mind if it can play podcasts. I also don't mind buying from less known companies. I just need to make sure if it craps out, I can return it or get it repaired within canada.

General :: Banshee Doesn't Play All Media Formats

Sep 14, 2010

After installing and gradually becoming familiar with OpenSUSE v11.2 [Gnome], I've been casually trying to get acquainted with the Bash shell and its commands. However, for this problem I thought it would be more appropriate to log in here, since this issue is a bit more serious. Accordingly, I'm afraid that I must once again prevail upon the helpful, patient, knowledgeable Linux users in this forum for assistance.As a retiree and a doting grandfather, I enjoy the luxury and time to take numerous videos of my children and grandchildren, and one of the features to which I've become spoiled in Windows is the ability to play a wide variety of video formats. Unfortunately, "out of the box", Banshee appears to refuse to play any of them. Somehow, using YaST, I was able to get online flash video to work by downloading and installing recommended packages, and it worked the first time after re-booting my system! However, I'm not having as much luck with installing video codecs that I apparently need to play my own video files. I wish these codecs had come pre-installed on the OpenSUSE disc that I burned, but you can't always get what you want. [Wasn't that the title of a 60's or 70's Rolling Stones song?]

I guess where I need help, specifically, is in determing where to get and how to install the best free video player and a comprehensive codec package that will work reliably in OpenSUSE. Would some kind soul out there be able to take me by the hand and show me, step by step, exactly what I must do to achieve this goal? I was hoping to be able to use the automatic package installer, but when I tried it, I noticed diagnostics informing me that I lacked certain dependencies, and that I should install manually, which I assume requires using the command line. I have no objection to trying this, if someone would be kind enough to show me exactly how. I really would like to be able to watch my grandchildren playing without having to depend upon one of my Windows systems.

Fedora Installation :: DualBoot Windows Vista And 14 - Play All Media Formats ?

Dec 13, 2010

I am planning to buy a new system. I am planning to use fedora and windows vista (I have a legal copy with me and I dont want to buy a new one. That's why no windows 7 here).

How shoudl I proceed? Which OS to install first? I believe (from reading the threads) that I should install windows vista first and Fedora second.

The main question I have is this. I heard that HDD makers will no longer ship the current HDD's in Jan. Heard that 512 byte hard drive format is to be replaced by 4KB. I read somewhere that this can cause issues when we go for dual boot. Is this true? In that case, what steps can I take to ensure no problems occur?

I really want to use Vista only for running certain applications which do not run on linux. I have heard WINE can simulate a WIN environment. But is this really true? I mean, can it simulate WIN environments perfectly?

My next question is regarding dual HDD. I am planning to go for 2*500GB HDD instead of 1*1TB HDD... So will it be better if I dedicate one HDD to Vista and 1 HDD to Fedora? (I know it will be a waste of space since I will be using Fedora mainly and hardly aropund 10-20 GB for Vista. But I can access the Vista partitions)

Does fedora play all media formats? I know out of the box it might not.. But does having VLC help?

I dont see any firewall protection in Linux. I have heard of using IPTables, but then how efefctive are those? I will be doing many online transactions and I want my system to be secure. I know Linux is pretty secure. So should I harden the security with a hardware firewall?

I will be watching a lot of DVD movies, AVI movies and some HD movies as well. Does linux have issues rendering HD movies properly? I have read somewhere that fedora has issues while Win is good and Debian/CentOS (Not sure which one was mentioned) is even better. I had a pretty powerful config in teh past and yet I have seen that my Vista machine had trouble rendering a HD movie properly.

I will be buying AMD configuration along with an ATI graphic card (sometimes). Does Fedora have any driver issues?

General :: Totem Won't Play Common Video Formats - An Error Occurred

Dec 13, 2009

Debian Lenny Gnome
Intel Celeron, 1100MHz, 512k

Earlier today I downloaded a video of a Mozilla Project preview, in MP4. Of course, it won't play. All I get is the audio, and this error:

Quote:

"An error occurred. The playback of this movie requires a H.264 decoder plugin which is not installed."

I put in some time, researching this issue, trying to figure it all out. I guess I'm looking in the wrong places. Is this a proprietary format issue? Also, when I was overdosing on XP, my media drug of choice was Klite mega codec pack (from codecs.com). It literally plays every media format, audio and video. In addition to fixing the above issue, can somebody guide me to an equivalent player with codecs for [insert any media type here]? I have several Terrabytes of various video and audio files, and prefer to not convert them all.

General :: 'Player' Won't Play CD In Centos - Xine Does

Apr 29, 2009

emachines W3115; CentOs 5.3 multiboot, KDE. Sound and video in general has worked fine on this machine. I have played MIDI files, converted them to WAV, and played them with one or more players, including noatun. When I install an audio CD, it brings up a window KDE Daemon which asks if I wish to:

Open in New window Extract and Encode Audio Tracks Play Do nothing. This is standard these days. The problem is, if I click on Play, it brings up a player called "player" which starts running smoothly, but no sound comes out of the speakers. I have no idea what 'player' is. There is no menu on it anywhere. DVD videos work fine, at least the Bonanza one I tried. If I open the CD rom, and right click a .wav file, either 'audio player' or 'mplayer' will play the file. Other choices don't.

*****If I go to the main menu ==> Multimedia and open Xine, then I can click on the CD button on Xine control and it will happily play the entire CD. *****

There are two ways to go on this. Unless someone has an idea what 'player' might be, and some idea how to fix it, another solution which I find suitable is to open XINE, when I click on that window choice stated above when CD is installed, which means I can select ALWAYS.I went to Configure on that mount window, and nothing seemed like it would actually let me configure anything at all. I figurer there is a script file which selects the command when PLAY is selected.

The problem is with a zillion Googles, I get all kinds of player information; all kinds of Centos information; etc., but nothing useful that has anything to do with my problem. how to change PLAY when it asks my choice on an installed CD, so it will run Xine? Note Centos forums does not allow a search on less then 3 characters, which makes it difficult to search for CD information.
