Ubuntu :: Can't Set Foxit As Defult PDF Viewer
May 24, 2010
I just downloaded Foxit and I want to set it as my default PDF reader. However, when I right click, choose Open With-->Other Applications and select Foxit, it just opens the PDF. The next time I open a PDF, it opens in evince again. I also tried System-->Preferences-->Preferred Applications, but there is no PDF option. What else can I try?

I have been following this guide to ensuring that your Linux converts stay with you to create a noob-proof Ubuntu ISO image with remastersys. I want to know how to set the default file formats in OpenOffice to Microsoft formats to ensure that the newbies who use this ISO image don't create documents that their friends can't open.

I recently upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 (colossal mistake) on my MacBook Pro and lost sound. In my effort to get it back, I ended up trashing the installation, so I formatted and installed Lucid from scratch. When I try to run the foxit that I re-installed from Foxit's website, I get absolutely nothing? I ran through the install using a number of instructions and still get the same result - basically an executable that does nothing.

Does anybody here use Foxit Reader 1.1 as PDF viewer? I did since it handles PDF ebook with complex layout better than Evince. No need to mention its smaller size and faster speed than Adobe Reader.
However, it seems that recently it's unable to restore the document state when the file was closed. I do not know which part goes run right now but quite sure in the late August it works well. It always jumped to the position when I stopped last time. Now it simply starts from the the first page. :-)
I looked through the Foxit Reader forum and found none similar problems reported. I posted here to see whether it is a Fedora specific problem or generalised one.

I'm using my laptop to read an ebook, and as I have no table where I read, i just rotate the screen to the right and hold the laptop as I was holding a book.. the problem I have now is the scrolling. So I have a couple Ideas, but I haven't found how to implement them, maybe someone knows how to do it, and could point me to the right direction.
1.- Use the webcam. Is there any way to use my left thumb to control the scrolling trough some kind of gestures in the webcam. 2.- Create a shortcut. I tried to create a new shortcut and assign it to the bluetooth key of my laptop, but I couldn't find any "command" that means scroll down

When I click to open a .pdf file, it shows nothing without a loading icon on the right hand top corner. I have waited a long, but it did not seem to change. Today I have removed document viewer using ubuntu software center and reinstalled it, but the problem exist. What should I do?

I used to connect to a linux server in our university using Putty and VNC viewer from my laptop which has Windows7. Everything was fine until I installed Ubuntu on another desktop computer and used xvnc4viewer to connect to the linux server. After that when I open the vncviewer, I can't see the top panel where you have System, Applications and ... time, date and so on. Also the bottom taskbar is missing. everything esle is fine. Computer, Home and Trash icons are there on the desktop and the only way I can get a terminal is by right-clicking on the screen.
I really need to have the top panel and the menubar and also the bottom taskbar. I have already tried anything. I spent more than 10 hours in forums in two days. The command gnome panel gives me an error message: A panel already running. exiting now.

I've been searching the site to find out what the program path is for Ubuntu programs, but can't find what I'm looking for. My search terms were :
- "program path" Ubuntu
- change "program path"
- "open with" "program path"
I came across a few articles but nothing really seemed to help me. Here's the problem; anytime I try to open a PDF file from my browser, I get either the "Open With..." option or the "Save to..." option.
If I select "Open With..." the default has been changed to Virus Scanner (ClamTK) which I recently installed. Admittedly, I was fooling around with virus scanners to see how they work in Ubuntu. But now my Document Viewer won't open up the PDF files. If I select "Save to..." and save the PDF file(s) to my desktop, and double-click the PDF file from my desktop, then Document Viewer will open up the file. What is the program path for me to change the default program back to Document Viewer???

I'm currently working on a presentation using the Beamer Latex class and I would like to embed a video in the presentation. The problem is that I cannot seem to find a PDF viewer that allows me to play these videos. Does anyone have any suggestions for a PDF viewer that does let me play videos, ideally within the PDF? I've tried using Evince and Acrobat Reader 9, but I've had issues with both. Evince doesn't allow you to play embedded videos in the PDF, but it does allow you to open an external media player by clicking a link. However, this doesn't work in presentation mode, which sort of defeats what I'm trying to do. I know a bug report has been filed on Launchpad for this problem, but it doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
Acrobat 9 also doesn't allow me to play embedded videos. It *does* allow me to open an external player in fullscreen mode, but the video always opens up behind the presentation, which means I have to alt-tab to the video.Kind of unprofessional. I've heard some people have had success with Okular. I'd rather not have to install all the KDE dependencies only to find Okular doesn't work Alternatively, does anyone know of any workarounds for either the issues in Acrobat or in Evince?

I am actually impressed with the innovation with scrollbars in Natty. However, when I'm using Ubuntu Classic, I cannot scroll document viewer horizontally because the handle gets under the lower panel (see screenschot attached)I have read somewhere that the new scrollbar is meant to save space, and the handle will automatically appear when hovered: the handle will appear outside the window if the window is smaller than the screen, and inside if the window or document is maximized or no space left outside the window. In my case, even if the document viewer (which is viewing a pdf) is maximized, the horizontal scrollbar still appears below the document. I needed to remove the lower panel just to scroll the document horizontally.

I'm having issues trying to find a good viewer for my pdf files. The only one I've found that works very well is the Acrobat Reader port for Linux. Even this isn't as good as its equivalent in Windows. I tried xpdf and some others, but found a lot of functionality lacking, such as the basic ability to get the hand tool for scrolling the page.

I'm new to Linux and Ubuntu, but have started migrating as I like what I see. However, I found a problem with Document Viewer. After downloading and viewing a PDF, when I try to print either the current page or a page range, it insists on printing the full document. I could not find this bug documented anywhere. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 with the latest fixes etc.

I've read about and taken brief looks at F-Spot, Gthumb, GQView, KphotoAlbum, and digiKam. Why is it so hard to find an app that edits IPTC? I think digiKam is supposed to, but 1) I was hoping not to have to run a KDE app on Gnome and 2) I can't even figure out how to use the darn thing ... it seems very unintuitive to me.
I miss Irfanview so much. (and no, I don't want to run WINE. I don't know why so many people are quick to suggest running Windows apps in WINE. If i wanted to run Windows apps, I'd run stinkin' Windows.)
It's one of those weeks for me when I feel like the more I actually try to USE Ubuntu for getting things done (as a long time Windows user), the more my hands are tied. I mean crap... MediaMonkey, Irfanview, ... ugh. Computers are for accomplishing tasks. Apps are for doing those tasks. OSes are for running those apps. I used to be a diehard OS/2 fan back in the day until I finally gave in to Windows. I still knew OS/2 was way superior, but what's the use in running a "superior" OS if you don't have the apps with features you need? I'm not trying to start a fight here and I hope I don't get slammed for my little venting here, but honestly...

Is there a way to get Document Viewer to display Chinese characters in a pdf? Adobe Viewer does but I would prefer to avoid proprietary software. I cannot get either Document Viewer or Okular to properly show Chinese characters in pdf documents downloaded from my college class homepage.
I have all the Chinese language support files, bells and whistles (both traditional and simplified) loaded and operational. When I create a Chinese document in OO Writer and save it as a pdf, both DocViewer and Okular display the the Chinese characters properly. I just cannot get either DocViewer or Okular to display Chinese in pdfs that are downloaded from the website of my course's online textbook/workbook.
Running 9.10 full boat version on an EEE 1000HD netbook.

I can't make use of the Gnome log file viewer anymore. Seconds after I start it, it will gray out and proceed to steadily lay claim to all my available RAM. It doesn't matter which log I choose, or if I don't choose one at all. Same thing. I have 1GB RAM, and when I took the included screencap the log viewer had taken almost 80% of it. It was at 90% before I forced a shutdown of the process. Does anyone have the slightest idea what might be causing this?
