Ubuntu :: Default Volume To 100% In Terminal With Gnome-volume-control-applet?
Jul 17, 2010Is there a way to default volume to 100% in the terminal with gnome-volume-control-applet or any other program? I am setting up a dedicated Zsnes machine which boots into Fluxbox but the volume is muted by default. There isn't a man page for gnome-volume-control-applet.
When I log into Gnome the volume is set to 100%, but Fluxbox is always set to mute.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: USB Soundcard Volume Controls With Laptop Volume Keys?
Oct 29, 2010I've got my xubuntu 10.10 install just about perfect on a little acer aspire d250, apart from a small sound useability issue: In the interests of simplicity and resource usage I removed pulseaudio. After a bit of fiddling I got it so that my USB soundcard (ProDac) is recognized and automatically set as the default soundcard when plugged in. Any sound applications automatically use the USB sound if it present, no need to around with pulse. The only problem is that my netbook's volume control keys still only control the master volume of the inbuilt soundcard, and have no effect on the usb sound. Does anyone know of a way to change which sound device these keys actually effect? I'd like to write a little script so that when the usb device is detected the keys are remapped.

Mar 7, 2011I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an old DFI KT600AL motherboard based system using the onboard VIA 3058 AC97 audio (because it supports front panel audio connections and none of the add-in PCI soundcards I have do). I have an old Gateway/STB TVPCI TV tuner card (mainly wanted the FM radio part to work) hooked up to the cd audio connector on the motherboard because the digital audio over the pci bus apparently isn't supported for this card (neither is the onboard analog mixer on the tv tuner card, I had to hack a CD-ROM audio cable and solder it to the audio outputs of the tv tuner module on the TV tuner card). When I use the master channel as the master channel (selected in Kmix) then as one would expect it affects the output volume of all other audio playing on the system except that which is being handled by the PCM channel. On Windows the PCM channel was also affected by the "Volume Control" slider such that ALL volume levels were reduced when moving the slider. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to make it work like this on Kubuntu.
First off I should warn you that I (like many users of older hardware that is not properly supported under PulseAudio) have uninstalled PulseAudio (because it's garbage) and am using Alsa to manage my audio hardware. I would think that there would be some way to do this using the 'amixer' application to add the PCM channel as a component of the 'Master' channel so that when the volume is turned down using the 'Master' channel control it will affect the PCM channel too (at least the output to the speaker jack, not necessarily the capture or mix volume though), but I'm not really any good at doing things from a terminal window and the options for the amixer command kind of confused me.

1. Problem: I cannot regulate the volume of the phones (output) anymore with gnome-volume-control. By default the volume is set to 100% which is way too loud. When I set it under 100% there is no sound at all. Values over 100% work.

Sep 9, 2010I'm using 10.04 now and it runs ok, except one strange thing in the Volume control applet. Sometimes, when I click on the volume slider, it moves up. Even if I try to slide it down, it moves up on every click. The same when I click left of it - it keeps moving up! This is very annoying at night when the music gets loud and wakes everybody. Apr 10, 2011My volume control seems to have only three settings: TOO LOUD, VERY QUIET, OFF. If I adjust the Master volume slider from the Panel, only about the right 1/8th has any effect and if I slide it past about the 95% mark, I get no sound at all. At the far-right end of the volume control, I get total volume. It's basically like the slider only has any impact in the top 5% of it's space. Below 95% of the slide, there is zero volume.
It's so drastic, that one tap down of the volume button on my keyboard kills the sound (because it nudges the slider past that 95% mark). This happens in the Audio settings, etc., system-wide. If I adjust the volume for an individual app from within the app (MPlayer, for example) it behaves exactly as expected (that is, app volume works smoothly, it's just master volume that has this issue). I have run through most of the "obvious" things-- I'm wondering if I broke something by installing the extra KDE packages to get Amarok to work.
Ubuntu :: Use Super Keys As Volume Up And Volume Down In Karmic?
Mar 17, 2010In Intrepid Ibex, I was using the left Super key as Volume Down and the right Super key as Volume Up, because it was just so convenient.
However when I go to the "Keyboard Shortcuts" window in Karmic, it doesn't let me assign the Super keys to anything. I mean like, I can use the Super Keys along with other keys, but not by themselves.
Is it somehow possible to use the Super keys for Volume Up and Volume Down in Karmic?

May 1, 2010It seems that when I adjust the volume with the volume wheel on the side of my notebook, the OS messes up. Nothing is clickable, I cannot type anything, in order to get a working computer again I have to hard reset it.Why is this happening? I have never experienced this. I have a Toshiba Satellite that I recently installed Ubuntu on.

There is only thing that would simplify my life minutely..Anybody know how can I have the volume buttons on my laptop change the "pcm" channel volume rather than "master"? If they could control pcm, then I could adjust the volume coming out of my headphones or my computer speaker (both controlled by pcm, but not master...seems strange to me) with just one click.I tried to find this info online, but all results seem to refer to an older version. The simple "click here, set this" solution no longer is possible.

Feb 27, 2011Debian Squeeze 6.0.0 on a Thinkpad T43, sound volume is not synchronized between the laptop volume buttons and GNOME's Volume Applet. So if I turn the volume all the way down with the physical buttons, the volume applet may still indicate 75%.I did not have this problem in Debian Lenny. Pressing the volume buttons used to show a volume bar on the screen, as did pressing the mute button.

Jan 22, 2011I don't know much about lvm and I've managed to screw up a drive. I had a 500GB drive with FC14 on it and I wanted to copy over a load of data to my new 1TB that was replacing it. I set up my new install the same way as the old...including the same volume names (error number 1 I think) I successfully mounted the old/500GB drive (using vgscan and vgchange -a y etc.) using a laptop (running FC13) and an external hdd cradle. I could access the files I wanted but this wasn't the machine I wanted to copy them to (I was doing this while waiting for the install to finish on the new drive).
When I tried the same process on the new install I found that having two lvm with the same name meant I couldn't mount the external one. So I opened the disk utility (palimsest) and was going to change the name of the old volume group but it wouldn't let me do that. I then thought maybe I could get away with just changing the name of the partition where the files were and maybe I could add it to the mounted group or something so I changed it to lv_home2. This changed the name of my new/1TB lv_home to lv_home2 as well. So thinking that wasn't the answer I just changed the name of the new lv_home2 back to lv_home.
From that point on I haven't been able to see the old drives partitions (the new volume group still works so far). I has a physical volume but the volume group and volume names are gone from view. When I try to vgscan on my main computer or the laptop I had it working on earlier I get:

Dec 1, 2010I'm rearranging a bunch of disks on my server at home and I find myself in the position of wanting to move a bunch of LVM logical volumes to another volume group. Is there a simple way to do this? I saw mention of a cplv command but this seems to be either old or not something that was ever available for linux.

Apr 26, 2011Just wondering if anyone else experienced this. I have been using Ubuntu for half a year now and I love it. I just installed Kubuntu Desktop to try it out and I found that I can't get near as high volume with it than I do with Ubuntu. Ubuntu is even way louder than the Windows that used to be on here.
So why is there a change in the max of volume? I am a huge music person and that is the only thing holding me back from getting rid of gnome. I like how fresh and clean KDE is.

Jul 6, 2010I installed Ubuntu on my intel-based 5,5 macbook pro 13'', with rEFIt installed on the mac hd, everything worked fine and I've been using Ubuntu for a while now, as in a month or more, but you see I only partitioned my 150GB mac hd to 7gb to install ubuntu on, but after downloading all the software and media, of course that space is starting to look a little bit small, anyway I didn't notice that until actually Ubuntu started to act up, as in it's being too slow and unresponsive , well that's what I should expect when I'm severely running out of space right.
anyway the space I had left was only a few megabytes, so what I thought would solve this, is actually using the Mac HD, since I have 50gb or 90gb of free space, but actually I can't write on my mac hd, so after research I found out that Ubuntu can only read hfs+ but can't write unless it's fat32 or linuxswap or other formats, so to my unexperienced decision, I happily decided to simply reformat my mac HD from hfs+ to fat32 using Gparted, BIG MISTAKE, once I did it, which happened in 4 seconds mind you, I restarted my macbook, and to my unpredicted surprise, where rEFIt should load, nothing did, not even my MAC OS, just a blue screen was there...
of course I panicked, I mean nothing loaded, how am I going to be able to even fix this if nothing as in not even Bios is there...but after a while Ubuntu or Grub just loaded, so I thought good, at least I have an OS to post my problem using, I tried deleting some media to free up space so I could at lease open a web page.
so my problem is, is there a way to return my Mac HD after reformatting it to fat32, I tried to format it back to hfs+ but for some reason Gparted can't do that, and now I can't access anything on my Mac, I find it hard to believe that around 100gb of data could be deleted in a mere 4 seconds, but if it did, at least I want my mac and OS back.

Nov 28, 2010Yeah, I've been messing around with my partitions recently to make them more organized and appealing to my OCD file management habits. My main partition that I use to store all my files and windows programs on was previously labeled "Free" since I installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago and created separate partitions for things, I didn't like the vagueness of the name, so I changed it to "Storage" via GParted Partition Editor.
Yet, for some reason it always changes its self to all capital letters. I label it "Storage", it becomes "STORAGE". I've researched around for others who have similar issues, but they usually ended up with a response similar to "It's Fat32, so it's always capital." I don't see how that's true, considering mine was labeled "Free" for the longest time..

Jan 19, 2011I have a partition to share files between Ubuntu and Windows, sometimes it becomes read-only but it's always reversible, this time it seems completely locked, all folders even have lock symbols and I can't change any file even if I open nautilus as root.
I can use it through windows with no problems, and have tried using PySDM to modify it but it's still the same.

Feb 20, 2011I have a 500GB Hard Drive NTFS format that is full of movies and pictures. I want to convert it to FAT32 and connect to XBOX 360.
I have GMount and have been doing test with a smaller 4GB flash drive. The drive was NTFS I was able to format it to a FAT32 no problem. Was not able to mount it in ubuntu so that I could actually add files to it . Ubuntu knows that the 4GB is their but will not let me open or mount it.
So can you change a hard drive to a FAT32 and still write to it from in Ubuntu if so how?

The personal HD is /dev/sdb.
I know I have to edit fstab in order to get it to mount automatically at boot, but I am having trouble with the commands.
I would like for it to mount at boot and have full read-write access from any user.

Apr 3, 2010My system consists of a laptop running Ubuntu 9.10, a network drive (Samba share formatted fat32 the only option) and a desktop PC running Windows XP. For several weeks have been trying to set-up Unison to synchronise files between my laptop and a network drive with only limited success. I mount the network drive locally with:
sudo mount -t cifs //netdrive/store /home/gm/NAS -o guest,rw,iocharset=utf8,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=07 77.
Then in Unison (graphical interface),
root 1 is: /home/gm/Shared_Docs
root 2 is: /home/gm/NAS/HomeBackup/Shared_Docs_Backup
After clicking the �OK� button, Unison searches for changes files and I click �Go�.
An error is then produced, a sample of which would be:

If all files in the destination directory (root 2) are first deleted, all files are copied correctly without errors so, I think the problem may be caused by permissions where Unison is unable to overwrite the original file. I know formatting the network drive fat32 is probably making the matter worse, unfortunately I have no alternative.
Ubuntu Installation :: Using FAT32 Partition As Swap?
Apr 5, 2010I'm installing a new SSD this upcoming weekend. My thought was to go easy on it so it lasts longer by putting my swap files on a mechanical drive instead of the SSD. I don't - however - want to waste space for swap files. It would be nice if I could use the same 6GB FAT32 partition for swap files for both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Is this possible? It might not even be necessary though, I have enough RAM that I rarely use the swap file at all (I've even considered going without swap all together), so it probably won't pose a huge load to the drive.

When my parents got a new 16:9-television I found, it has a USB-slot to display photos. So I bought a new 2 GB USB-stick for them and copied over some photos. Well it works quite well, if you organize the photos in folders (because a flat list is simply unmaintainable).
I really spent some time to work this out on my laptop. But the next day I showed it to my parents on their TV, the photos came in seemingly random order. Taking a second look the order is not really random, but shuffled once for all time. The television does no sorting at all and shows the photos in the order, the files were added to the directories.
As I understand from the documentation of the TV, defragmentation can not only rewrite files so their contents are in a neat sequence, but also reorganize folders and especially sort the entries. There is just one problem: My last WinXP-PC was already recycled, though I still have the installation-CD.
Now I definitely don't want to install WinXP everytime over Ubuntu, just to do some defragmentation now and then. Moreover I don't want a dual-boot, as it would tempt me, to abandon Ubuntu and switch back to WinXP.
On the other hand, I don't want to bother my friends with this little problem, as far as admitting, there are things I simply cannot do with Ubuntu won't help me persuade them, that Ubuntu is a veritable replacement.
Finally the TV and the stick are at my parents home which is quite a distance away. I imagine bringing more photos on my laptop *TO* them, but not taking the stick with me every-time, just to "repair" it on some WinXP-PC somewhere far away, thereby effectively taking all the other photos away *FROM* them.
Getting more specific:
1. Are there any defragmentation / reorganization / reparation tools to maintain FAT32 under Ubuntu?
2. Has anybody ripped Scandisk+Defrag from WinXP and got it running with wine? Is this save in the way, that it will not damage the FAT32 filesystem?
3. I've installed WinXP in VirtualBox from Sun (not the OSE-version). But so far I could not access any USB device. The menu-entry in virtualbox is simply grayed out.
