When my parents got a new 16:9-television I found, it has a USB-slot to display photos. So I bought a new 2 GB USB-stick for them and copied over some photos. Well it works quite well, if you organize the photos in folders (because a flat list is simply unmaintainable).
I really spent some time to work this out on my laptop. But the next day I showed it to my parents on their TV, the photos came in seemingly random order. Taking a second look the order is not really random, but shuffled once for all time. The television does no sorting at all and shows the photos in the order, the files were added to the directories.
As I understand from the documentation of the TV, defragmentation can not only rewrite files so their contents are in a neat sequence, but also reorganize folders and especially sort the entries. There is just one problem: My last WinXP-PC was already recycled, though I still have the installation-CD.
Now I definitely don't want to install WinXP everytime over Ubuntu, just to do some defragmentation now and then. Moreover I don't want a dual-boot, as it would tempt me, to abandon Ubuntu and switch back to WinXP.
On the other hand, I don't want to bother my friends with this little problem, as far as admitting, there are things I simply cannot do with Ubuntu won't help me persuade them, that Ubuntu is a veritable replacement.
Finally the TV and the stick are at my parents home which is quite a distance away. I imagine bringing more photos on my laptop *TO* them, but not taking the stick with me every-time, just to "repair" it on some WinXP-PC somewhere far away, thereby effectively taking all the other photos away *FROM* them.
Getting more specific:
1. Are there any defragmentation / reorganization / reparation tools to maintain FAT32 under Ubuntu?
2. Has anybody ripped Scandisk+Defrag from WinXP and got it running with wine? Is this save in the way, that it will not damage the FAT32 filesystem?
3. I've installed WinXP in VirtualBox from Sun (not the OSE-version). But so far I could not access any USB device. The menu-entry in virtualbox is simply grayed out.
I got a Fat32 Extern Hard Drive and I would like to do a defrag and a scandisk on it with fsck? Can any one tell me what is the command to do it? I could not find it on google,
I accidentally did rm -rf /mnt/usbdisk while my usbdisk was mounted to that location. I then copied a 350mb file to that disk before I realized what I had done. Now I wished to recover some files from there. I tried testdisk which shows some filenames, but none contain useful data after copying them. Or even remotely recognizable data.My question is is it to late? Has copying the 350mb fiel already overwritten the smaller textfiles?Otherwise, is there a better undelet program to use?
I'd like to plug a USB FAT32 formatted memory stick into my Linux laptop and have it mount automatically as it does now but with wide open permissions. At the moment it opens with files only being readable and writable by the user but I would like other uses to be able to read and to write to files (i.e. I use Apache to serve a site from the stick for development purposes). If it matters I am running Jolicloud on a netbook.
fsck reports 18905 non-contiguous files (20.9%) and 40 non-contiguous directories (0.0%) on an ext4 file system so I would really like to defragment it.
ive just installed ubuntu and notice there are noises coming from my hard-drive like its defragmenting or optimizing but the light isnt coming on... i never noticed this activity in windows7? - when it defrags in windows 7 i can hear it and the light flashes but on this the lights not flashing but i can hear wot sounds like fast writing, really fast clicking
Looking on web it seems to be a problem with power management settings in ubuntu being incorrect... i refuse to believe its the manufacturers as its been fine in windows for past 2 years
I recently moved around, deleted and just had a general day of cleaning up the file structure on my pc. HDD contains about 2 TB of data. Around 1 TB was relocated on the disc, and yet another TB was moved to external drive.
In windows this would likely means it was time for a defrag. Can't find any defrag tools in Xubuntu and that lead me to remember I read somewhere that there is no need to defrag when running Linux.
So is that correct? Is defrag only for the wondows world and something we never need to do in Linux?
If not is there a way to do a defrag from terminal?
Can someone tell me the best way to go about peforming an offline defrag of ext4? Considerations:Needs to be safe (i.e.: not wanting to bork up my music files 8))I have seen ref. to e4defrag. Everything seems to point to it still being buggy.I have a large ext4 drive with 2/3 empty that gets lots add / remove.would like ti be able to see the amount of fragmentation.would like to make file continous and then condensed to start of partition ( that would make read times faster right?)
I need to figure out how to arrange for the fastest-possible read-access of a large or huge memory-mapped file. I'm writing high-speed real-time object-chasing software for a NASA telescope (on earth). This software must detect images of fast moving objects (across arbitrary fields of fixed stars), estimate what direction and speed the object image is traveling (based on the length and direction of a streak on the detection image), then chase after the object while capturing new 4Kx4K pixel images every 2~5 seconds, quickly matching its speed and trajectory, then continue to track and capture images until the object vanishes (below horizon, into earth shadow, etc).
I have created two star "catalogs". Both contain the same 1+ billion stars (and other objects), but one is a "master catalog" that contains all known information about each object (128 bytes per object == 143GB) while the other is a "nightly build" that only contains the information necessary to perform the real-time process (32 bytes per object == 36GB) with object positions precisely updated for precession and proper-motion each night. Almost always the information in the "nightly build" catalog will be sufficient for the high-speed (real-time) processes.
I am taking a Geology class this semester and we were assigned a CD that has an interactive program on it. I didn't like the access speed- especially when the narrator was supposed to talk. The DVD/CDRW drive had to spin up and... then the narrator spoke.I'm wondering if I can create an ISO image of that CD and then transfer it to a SD card so it's less noisy and less pokey than a CD.I only have Brasero at this point so I don't know if that program will be enough
i was writing a .img file to my usb stick with ImageWriter, but it didn't seem to do anything so i clicked the close gtk button and pulled the stick out of my pc. now my pc gives my an when i try to open the stick. is there any way to fix this. I can use win xp pro, win xp media center, win 7 starter, ubuntu 9.10 and ubuntu 10.04
I im using Ubunto 10.10 ive installed the latest drivers from the ATIAMD site. Video works fine. Im only able to get stereo sound through the HDMI. i know under windows this card will do dolby 5.1 and also bitstream the higher end audio formats like DTS Master Audio and Dolby true HD etc. why is it under ubuntu the best i can get is stereo? I have checked setings in the alsmixer and the only opyion it has is stereo.
I'm about to ditch Freenas as my NAS software and make it an Ubuntu server box. The mainboard is an Asus AT3ION-T dual core Atom board. Freenas runs happily from USB stick. I have no optical device to install Ubuntu from and would like to install Ubuntu Server to a USB stick.
im trying to use a Y0400052 remote control from my leadtek winfast analog tv receiver pci card with a elgato eyetv dtt dvb-t usb stick. i know theres plenty of 'how do i get my infrared remote controller working' infos out there but im kind of lost. feel free to direct me to an appropriate place. part of my confusion is that im both lost on a very general level AND on a very specific level. back in the days when i had a desktop and was using the leadtek pci card the remote was working ok via lirc. now it seems that there is this new way of handling remotes via devinput and 'events' so im unclear - do i need lirc anymore?
I have a Mobidtv Trio v-gear which has the same specs as a MSI or geniatech usb stick inux-xf9w:/home/hase/RPM/dvb-apps # dmesg|tail results in :

Neither with kaffeine, Me tv or tvtime can I search for channels? I run 11.2 Asus laptop Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz
Ubuntu 10.04, nVidia GeForce 9400, driver ver 195.36.15.When I log in, the system always comes up in 800x600 mode. I went into the NVIDIA X Server Settings page and changed it to my preferred setting of 1152x864. I hit Apply, then Save to X Configuration File (with correct root password). All is well until restarting. Then it reverts back. The update doesn't stick. How can I make this the permenant setting?
I am trying to get the Asus "My Cinema-U3100 Mini plus" DVB-T USB stick to work on my lucid 32bit with 2.6.32-27 kernel - with no great success so far. And this despite searching through forums and following the instructions given on [URL].
The USBID is in fact Code: ID 0b05:1779 ASUSTek Computer, Inc. Which is exactly the one shown in the list of supported devices on LinuxTV. I have implemented all modifications and corrections to the source files as outlined in the above LinuxTVWiki instructions.
I also added the boot option Code: usbhid.quirks=0x0b05:0x1779:0x0004 to grub2 in order to overcome the (initial) problem of the tuner being recognised as a HID device.
My dmesg output after plugging in the device now shows Code: Jan 27 17:44:50 jens-laptop kernel: [ 1086.358488] usb 2-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 6 Jan 27 17:44:50 jens-laptop kernel: [ 1086.495359] usb 2-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

My knowledge is limited and I have no idea why I am getting all these warnings and finally the error message. Also, is there a way to tell when (or if at all) driver support for this device will be implemented in the Linux kernel?
i have been able to get my webcam working in Skype by doing the LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype command and installing v4l2ucp but it doesn't stick. So next time i boot it is like i didn't do anything. I have read a few things on it on this forum and i am not sure what to do next. Is there a conflict with my nvidia video card? I only installed Ubuntu 10 a week ago i think.
Due to a bug that will be fixed at squeeze (I'm running lennyx64), I can't mount ntfs partitions from gui interface (or else, directories with non-English characters will be ignored).
So I'm mounting with disk-manager (hd partitions only), or from konsole. Obviously, mounting from konsole, is the only option for usb flash sticks.
Suddenly, just out of the blue, today debian stopped mounting ntfs partitions from konsole. Since this was my only option for mounting safely my friend's sticks, I have a big problem right now.
I can't figure out many things from the error message:
For the last several weeks i've been trying KDE and it's been working quite fine. There are however several minor issues with KDE.
First - how can i format a usb stick? In GNOME after the usb stick has been plugged in one just have to right click on it and select "Format". Here i don't see such an option. I googled it and i read somewhere that the tool for this would be KDE partition manager. I installed it but it looks like an overkill for the task. KDE partition manager is high level tool like GParted, whereas i'm looking for something that integrates into the desktop so i can just right click on the usb drive and select format. Besides KDE partition manager asks for a root password which is logical because it can format all your partitions. However i don't see the need for a root password when one is going to format a usb drive.
Second - i tried to use my micro sd card yesterday and while it mounted automatically i couldn't write anything on it or delete any of the files on it ( didn't have this problem with the usb stick though). How can i change that? I have a default Debian install with a nearly default KDE 4.6.5. In GNOME the SD card was always mounted writable by default.
Third - i am using Iceweasel, Rhythmbox and GIMP which are GTK applications. To make them look OK in KDE i installed gtk2-engines-oxygen and kde-config-gtk-style and i also installed the Oxygen KDE Firefox theme (from here [URL]). I then configured the GTK applications to use the oxygen engine and Rhythmbox and GIMP look perfectly OK (i've attached a screenshot at the bottom of my post) however Iceweasel doesn't look completely OK. The problem is that the color scheme of the window is slightly darker than the color scheme of the upper window border - i've attached screenshots of Rhythmbox and Iceweasel so you can compare. I've tried KDE 4.7 with Arch Linux and Firefox there looks OK just like Rhythmbox. It is a small detail but it bugs me...
Fourth - i have problem with the KDE theme for Firefox which i've installed. Without it Iceweasel doesn't look that good. With it, the find menu (activated with ctrl+f) doesn't work - instead of the regular search field just a very small box appears. I've posted a screenshot for that as well.
I am using the Gnome desktop in Lenny 5.03The default Gedit paper size is "US Letter", which is almost right for my HP Laserjet 4L, except that about .5 inch at the top and .25 inch at the left margin are cut off.I have defined a "Custom Size" under File -> Page Setup -> Manage Custom Sizes... with margin settings that solve the problem, but this "Custom Size" only remains the default Paper Size for printing until Gedit is closed.Using what appears to be the same gnome dialog from epiphany and evolution, the Papersize settings stick, but not from Gedit. I cannot locate any configuration file to edit, and nothing in the gconf editor seems to apply.
I think I have a corrupted file system on my 1TB harddrive as both Windows Vista and Ubuntu are not seeing it. How do I recover the drive. I have never experienced this sort of thing before.
When I start bluej and try to open files from my memory stick the memory stick is not available. Is there any way that I can open files directly in bluej from my memory stick.
I've a new format in my HDD and put win7 and ubuntu 10.04. I made a partition about 50GB so that i can get files from ubuntu to windows and the other way around.I can see that partition in windows but not in ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu on my intel-based 5,5 macbook pro 13'', with rEFIt installed on the mac hd, everything worked fine and I've been using Ubuntu for a while now, as in a month or more, but you see I only partitioned my 150GB mac hd to 7gb to install ubuntu on, but after downloading all the software and media, of course that space is starting to look a little bit small, anyway I didn't notice that until actually Ubuntu started to act up, as in it's being too slow and unresponsive , well that's what I should expect when I'm severely running out of space right.
anyway the space I had left was only a few megabytes, so what I thought would solve this, is actually using the Mac HD, since I have 50gb or 90gb of free space, but actually I can't write on my mac hd, so after research I found out that Ubuntu can only read hfs+ but can't write unless it's fat32 or linuxswap or other formats, so to my unexperienced decision, I happily decided to simply reformat my mac HD from hfs+ to fat32 using Gparted, BIG MISTAKE, once I did it, which happened in 4 seconds mind you, I restarted my macbook, and to my unpredicted surprise, where rEFIt should load, nothing did, not even my MAC OS, just a blue screen was there...
of course I panicked, I mean nothing loaded, how am I going to be able to even fix this if nothing as in not even Bios is there...but after a while Ubuntu or Grub just loaded, so I thought good, at least I have an OS to post my problem using, I tried deleting some media to free up space so I could at lease open a web page.
so my problem is, is there a way to return my Mac HD after reformatting it to fat32, I tried to format it back to hfs+ but for some reason Gparted can't do that, and now I can't access anything on my Mac, I find it hard to believe that around 100gb of data could be deleted in a mere 4 seconds, but if it did, at least I want my mac and OS back.
