When I run Sims3 in Wine, the game happily switches video mode and runs fullscreen... but the global menu bar doesn't autohide, and there's no way to get it to hide manually. I've checked the Unity plugin in the compiz settings control panel, but there don't seem to be any settings at all for the global main menu there.

I wonder if its any easy way to configure grub2...I dont want to change fonts, background or anything special. Just to change default operating system time to shown menu etc.
Is there anythink like known from KDE? graphical tool to tick what I wont, choose time from list or type it in, click OK to finish and job done... without any manual typing, terminal use etc.

I just reinstalled Ubuntu Lucid Lynx and an old problem has come back. For some reason I couldn't fix it even in my previous installation. The problem is the top gnome panel. See the photo below: As you can see, the network icon is not shown properly while the Me menu is being shown twice. I can't even restart or log out or shut down at this situation without pressing the keystroke to turn the power off.

I am using debian 6.0.0 The video files are played by default in totem.I like gmplayer. Also I want to make script for intelligently guessing as follows Get all the names of file in <folder-containing-video>. See which of them (among *.srt.*.sub.*.ssa) has maximum number of characters matching with video name. That file will be parameter for sub option .
I saw a desktop entry for gvim which is like gvim -f %F -f means foreground I can try
gmplayer -vo xv -sub what-should-I-write-here %F

I did some modification of fstab, and works, but for some strange reason, there are drives shown in the Places menu that shouldn't be there when the drives (they are usb drives) are unplugged. I had to put them in fstab, because they are mp3 players and I need user privelages in order to sync them. With nothing plugged in the usb ports,I checked, and they aren't shown in mtab, and only Sansa-e260 and JOSHS PHONE are shown in fstab, although as far as I know, they shouldn't appear in Places when unmounted. Is there a way to reset it?

I can't seem to hide any items on the "Games" menu from "Main Menu" (System->Preferences->Main Menu). I can hide items on all of the other menus under the main one but the game links won't change. Is there another way to do this?

On my new 32-bit dell-vostro-1014 with debian-lenny OS I have installed via apt-get both smplayer and vlc-mediaplayer and have ripped the movie dvds by k3b and kept them as .avi files. While smplayer can play them, vlc-mediaplayer does not show the picture, only the voices are played. If I play the dvd from the optical tray then vlc poses no problem. Is it an inherent defect of the vlc package? If not what's the remedy?

upgrading to the latest kernel, which my Ubuntu 10.04 did automatically, I cannot shutdown, suspend, or restart from the main menu.In other words, I click ubuntu logo on the taskbar, click Shutown and select Shut Down or any of the remaining 2 options, but nothing happens. Just the menu window disappears.I had adjusted the power button of my notebook to shut down the computer and this works now.

I'm trying to make the Debian sub menu appear by clicking 'on' the Debian box in System -> Preferences -> Main Menu but when I exit the Debian sub menu doesn't appear. One post I found talked about ROOT owning the directories, but not sure if that is the case with me or not.
I last asked this four years ago and got a response with a very lengthy script that had to be run at boot time, in terminal mode.

I'm trying to set up my system(Ubuntu 10.04hat the main menu and its contents (application, places, system, etc) do not appear(or are hidden in such a way that the user cannot access it). This sounds counter-intuitive. I know. I tried deleting them by hand, but they reappear after every reboot. Is there a system file with preferences that I can edit or something else that can be done?

I'm trying to configure Ubuntu 10.04 for my personal tastes. I have already done a lot but I need help in continuing my endeavour., I come here, having Googled my query and receiving no help, to ask you lot.The icons on the main menu (the one that only has the black Ubuntu logo; not the default three menu one) looks simply vulgar so I want to remove them. I was able to do so in the past but now it eludes me. I think having the icons for everything looks unprofessional and cluttered. Is there a way I can remove those nasty icons from the menu?So it is clear, I'm talking about the Swiss Army knife, cards, and etc on the main menu and all the other icons on the sub-menus.

Alright so I recently started using Cardapio with the intent of replacing the panels with a single dock. The only thing left to do is to replace the docky icon with the cardapio menu. Apparently there is a key in the gconf-editor apps/docky-2/Docky/Items/DockyItem that can be used to change what the docky icon does. I am unable to find the folder DockyItems in the hierarchy. I added both the folder and the key but it makes no change. I'm using the latest Docky build and Ubuntu 10.10 so things may have changed since the write-ups on how to do this. Has anyone successfully added the menu functionality with the latest versions or at least figured out where the DockyItems went to? its the last thing I'm changing on my desktop... PS. Is there any way to add the notification area/user logout to the dock as well?
