Ubuntu :: Changing The Color Of The Panel Menu Background?

Jun 25, 2011

I know how to change the colors of the panels. But on the parts were the ubuntu symbol, the menus (Applications, Places, and Systems), the date and time, and the indicator applets is, they do not change at all. And pretty much the same problem on the bottom panel.

I tried Gnome color changer but only works for the texts and the drop down menus. I use Gnome classic (hated Unity). My goal is to make ALL of the panel background black.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dell 8400 - Screen Displaying Main Menu And Not Changing

Jan 31, 2010

I my trying to install Ubuntu onto a new 1 TByte Sata HDD on my Dell 8400. The computer has no other OS installed as the old HDD containing Windows XP has being removed. The new hdd has being fully formatted and is set up as a NTFS with a single partition of 1 TByte. I downloaded the latest version of UBuntu and burned it to a cd as a ISO file. When I boot my computer up from this cd I am asked to enter my language of choice and then I get the main menu screen. On this screen I choose option (2) - Install Ubuntu. After a few minutes during which time you can hear the cd being accessed the screen just displays this main menu and never changes. I have tried twice using this install option but after 45-50 minutes the screen still never changes. No progress information is given. If it is normal how long does the installation generally take?

Ubuntu :: Main User Disappeared After Changing UID And GID

Sep 20, 2010

I run both Mac OS X and Lucid. I backed up my OS X partition in preparation for a restore. I also moved over important work documents to Lucid. Restored OS X using timemachine. Updated OS X with patches and moved over some files from external hard drive. After moving the files over, timemachine backed up system. I went into Time machine to transfer work documents over but the previous back up was deleted for the new one. I had the documents on Lucid. I just needed to switch it over to OS X. Therefore, I tried to enable read/write from Lucid to Mac OS X partition.

1. sudo usermod -u osx-uid ubuntu-username # change Ubuntu UID to 501
2. sudo umount /osx # UNMOUNT OSX PARTITION FIRST!!!
3. sudo find / -uid old-ubuntu-uid -print0 | xargs -0 chown osx-uid # change file permissions

OS X was unmounted prior to entering commands and performed the steps above under a different user. During step 3 I received an error stating you do not have sufficient privileges and the process stopped. I logged out of my temporary account and tried logging back into my main account. Main account was not present on the login screen. So I followed these steps to change my UID and GID from 501 back to 1000. Login appeared. I tried to login but there was an error about ICEauthority and Nautilus. System doesn't load up and only shows wallpaper. I haven't deleted anything and I expect that I just need to point my UID back to wherever my home folder is.

Ubuntu :: Stop Users From Changing Their Background?

How do I stop users from changing their background? I'm installing ubuntu on some (non-networked) computers at my school, and I don't want the students to change the background on the desktop. I don't care if they change it during their session, but it must revert to the default when the session is logged-out or shutdown.

Ubuntu :: Changing Background Crashes GNOME

Jul 9, 2010

Been trying to get mac4lin to work, and in the process, I attempted uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling gtk-engines-pixbuf. This has now screwed my system so that the background is a light grey and any attempt to change the wallpaper just makes X crash, forcing me to Ctrl Alt Backspace. I'd rather avoid a reinstall of the system since I have it customized to my needs, so is there a solution to this? I tried reinstalling the pixbufs package, but no dice.

Ubuntu :: Black Background After Changing Vnc Settings

Oct 12, 2010

I was configuring the vnc server or remote desktop using the "gconf-editor" -- "desktop - gnome - remote_access" pane, and first I clicked on "disable background" to see if it was usefull or not to disable it (in terms of speed). It worked fine but sometimes when closing the connection, the background refuses to reenable, mantaining the black background...

That's ok, I decided to disable the feature and share via vnc the background as it is a wired net and I do not really need this feature.

My surprise is that now, whith the feature DISABLE (box unchecked), I cannot set a background, it is always black and I find no way to go back in this...

is this common, or something that can be "easily" fixed?

I last asked this four years ago and got a response with a very lengthy script that had to be run at boot time, in terminal mode.

Debian :: Methods For Changing The GRUB-PC Background Image?

Mar 26, 2011

After much searching and trying of more complicated methods for changing the GRUB-PC background image, i found method that seems to work. The simplest one! I installed grub2-splashimages, which created a new folder in /usr/share/images, called grub. From there it appears to be as simple as adding the image of your choice, then adding "GRUB_BACKGROUND=/usr/share/images/grub/your_image" to "/etc/default/grub" file, the running "update-grub", of course.

Only problem is it doesnt work for the image i really want. So my question: What qualities should an image have if it is to be successfully used as a GRUB-PC (GRUB 2?) background? I have read that you do not need to resize the image anymore, indeed i tried resizing it to match the size a default image form the "/usr/share/images/grub" folder , and saving it with the extension .tga in Gimp and it did not work. The image i want to use is quite large, it is also black and white/grey-scale and in the .png format.
