Ubuntu :: Partition Table Damaged - Pc Doesn't Boot From Hard Disk

Feb 20, 2011

Caused by Used fdisk to delete the windows partition, in my dual boot. Then I could no longer log in to ubuntu, the partition table was some how courpt and I couldnt remount I then decided to use the windows partitioner from windows setup, as I thought it is so stupid, to reformat the partition where I had ubuntu. I wanted reinstall ubuntu, and I know that during the setup I could straighten out the mess I'd made.

Windows has now installed two 8mb one cylinder partitions on my HD. When I start the PC I get a !disk error occurred Press Crlt Alt Del to restart! This happens everytime. HD boot sequence is buggered, i guess.

I can boot from other devices. USB + CD. How when I use the windows disk to boot up I can see the 2 8mb partition, which it wont let me delete. How can I delete this via linux?

Also when I try to install ubuntu from the usb drive, it stalls just after the Preparing to install part. The next screen is when you set the partition table, swap drive etc. When I quit I get the following error !Process Glib WARNING getpuuid_r() failed due to unknown id!

The usb_liveCD does however mount my hard disk partitions and luckily I have managed to back everything up to an external.

Its basically an old SATA Hard Drive with a Windows XP partition I was trying to sell. When my computer does the BIOS checks, it doesn't pass the SMART test (but I can boot it anyway), although I can't boot Linux in any way with this Hard Disk connected (I even tried Live CD distros, like Parted Magic).I can boot the XP partition from inside the disk, although I guess its pretty close to not being able to. Is there any way to "fix" this Hard Drive?

Jul 17, 2011

Have been using mint 11 for past few weeks with no problem but failed to boot correctly. menu appeared giving options for booting but kept returning to this menu without going further so I opted to go for safe booting option, after loading a few files it asked for password but kept giving me the message incorrect password so I could get no further. Fortunately I had a cop of clonezilla and was able to restore a backup from a second hard drive but would be grateful for any observations anyone would like to make about this (in case it happens again)

I worked everyday during 1.5 years on a Wubi installation of Ubuntu 8.10.

Before quitting my job I have made a simple copy of the root.disk file, thinking I could restore it easily later.

Now I would restore this system on a Virtual Machine (with Virtual Box)

Have you got an idea how i could do this??

(I already tryied to install another wubi on a virtualized Windows 7, the install complete but I can't see ubuntu in the boot loader...)

Ubuntu :: Backup System A, To Restore System B?

Jan 25, 2011

Recently I've backupped my entire /home folder on my laptop with grsynch trough ssh.Since I already had a simply text file containing all installed programs, I figured 'then, when i go from the backup trough my desktop, all my program settings will be restored if i run the txt file to install all those programs first. So i installed al programs, then i went from backup to /home on desktop, logged out and back in. Started up a random program (tried thunderbird and filezilla) and no settings were to be found. In retrospect, docky did start, but didnt have all the launchers i had on my laptop. so that could have been a clue.

Ubuntu :: Backup And Restore A Triple-boot System?

Jun 14, 2010

best/simplest way to back up my triple-boot machine, which has Karmic 32-bit, Karmic 64-bit and Windows 7 (64-bit) installed on 3 equal slices of the internal 1TB disk. There are a total of 6 partitions (1 primary+1 logical partition each for the two Karmic, and 2 primary partitions for Win7), and I would like to back it up on an external disk such that the whole system can be restored as-is by writing over the disk. I guess this means correctly backing up data+partition table+MBR, and I would also prefer backing up only the used portion of the disk (rather than creating a 1TB mostly empty image file).

To my knowledge the only way to reliably do this is with "dd" command, but I have never used it ("fsarchiver" seems to be the next best option, but it cannot back up MBR yet; and "partimage" does not have ext4 support). As described here and here, I should run the following commands from a live boot:

1) To back up entire data in compressed format (using 1MB read block to speed up the process):

dd if=/dev/sda bs=1MB | gzip > /backup/image.gz

2) To back up MBR+partition table (stored within the first 512 bytes of the disk):
dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 of=/backup/image.mbr

3) To restore data:

gzip -dc /backup/image.gz | dd of=/dev/sda

4) To restore MBR+partition table:

dd if=/backup/image.mbr of=/dev/sda

I'm using a dell XPS M1530 laptop with windows vista and ubuntu 10.04. Last week when I turned on my laptop I got an error saying internal hard disk not found. When I called dell support, I have been told that my hard disk is dead. I have few important stuffs in my hard disk for which I don't have any back. So I tried using ubuntu live CD to back up my data as in the link below.[URL]..I'm using ubuntu 10.04 live CD(64 bit). When I go to my places after booting from the live CD I can't see any partition showing my hard disk. I can see "Computer". When I go in it I can only see "File System" and nothing related to my partitions in my HDD. What should I do now? Do I need to mount my hard disk or is my HDD completely dead?

BUT I want to keep a copy of the entire harddrive with the dell utility partition and Windows Vista in case I want to go back. I was thinking I could image the drive but I not sure what to use, I don't have Ghost or anything, Someone had told me about Clonezilla. Would that work for me? Is it hard to use? Also I want to burn the data to a DVD or something more storable than a harddisk.

Ubuntu Installation :: Partition Second Hard Disk For Use As Backup Data

Sep 29, 2010

My primary drive is 250GB and has the root, home and var (I'd read it's good to put var on a separate partition for MythTV which I'm planning on doing) on separate partitions. I have a second 1TB drive that I'll be using to backup the 250GB drive and also host less critical data. I've created two partitions on this drive, one 250GB and the other covering the rest of the drive. I'd like to move the Videos directory out of Home on the 250GB onto the 1TB drive but can't find a definitive way of doing this. Should I just follow this guide for moving the home folder to a new partition? Next question is when performing a backup of the 250GB drive how do I make sure it's going to the 250GB partition on the 1TB drive? Can the different partitions be mounted separately?
