My grandson got a little free time on my login screen. When I got back I found the right half of the screen was covered with a cascade of zoomed copies of the regular login display. Each layer of the cascade larger that the previous as one moved right across the screen. When I reboot it is still there. I have tried various hotkey combinations in the hopes that I could change this, but with no result. I have looked for files which might have such a pattern saved. I found a file /usr/share/gnome-session/session-properties.ui with a promising name and inside was a series of 'child' entries, but removing all but the first child entry changed nothing. how to fix it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have found that APACHE or 'httpd' is installed in my machine. But the problem is I can start or stop the httpd but whenever I load the url http://localhost in Mozilla it shows a page load error.I have done this ,
$ /etc/init.d/httpd start
then this

I reinstalled fedora the other day, and it's been working just fine, apart from the internet. It shows that I have a full connection with the wireless network, but it's really difficult to actually load a page. 80% of the time it just fails and shows "Page Load Error". It's really frustrating because it is connected to the internet. In fact, the icon in the address bar even loads from the site I try to access, but websites just will not load.
I've tested my wireless internet with another laptop which is running vista, and it works perfectly on that. Also, I'm running Fedora 10 on an Acer Extensa laptop.
After 2 months away from Fedora i am using it again, and used yum update to update stuff, everything was running fine, downloaded stuff, but 2 of the 666 stuff to install got error, here is:

I dual booted Ubuntu with Win XP, and decided to upgrade XP to Win7. Thought I knew how to do it, so excuse my dumbness. Here's where I'm at: I booted GParted, and deleted the /, /home and swap partitions, making unallocated space. I expanded Win XP partition and tried to re-boot, expecting only Windows to show. Instead, I got the Error 22 error when Grub was the first thing to load. So, back to GParted, deleted the primary partition, created a new bootable partition, formatted it NTFS, and put the Win7 disk and rebooted. This time I got a Windows error "can't load NTLdr".
Rebooted the computer without the disk, and got the Error 22 again. So it seems (?) that I'm not able to change/remove or otherwise, the Grub boot file. So the drive is currently useless, unless someone can tell me how to get the disk back to a bootable state where I can load Win7, after which I can create Ubuntu as a dual boot again.
I'm attempting to install ubuntu netbook on my Asus Netbook from a USB and I'm getting the following error as soon as it boots from the USB

So after having performance issues with Karmic in ext4 I decided to install Hardy with ext3. Was blazing fast, epic, I loved it. But I wanted firefox 3.5 & all the other cool stuff Karmic has.. so I decide to install Karmic, but this time with ext3 instead of 4.
First installation: After the installation went fine, no errors while installing or anything. I remove the CD and reboot. "GRUB Loading, please wait.. Error 15" I did my googling, with the live CD to try and figure out a way of fixing this error. No luck. I did find out that the error is caused by the GRUB trying to load form the wrong drive. So I try to boot directly from the Karmic drive, Error 15. Try to boot directly from the Windows drive, Error 17.
This is the first time this has ever happened to me. First time installing Hardy, everything went great. Installing Jaunty, everything went great. Installing Karmic (for the first time) everything went great. Uninstalled Karmic and installed Hardy, everything went great. Uninstalled Hardy to install Karmic = FAIL!. I did a clean install every single time. The OS is being installed (clean) in the same drive.
A 40GB drive for Windows. A 200GB drive for Ubuntu +/home +swap, and a 120GB(FAT32) for storage.
I installed Karmic 3 times, yes.. 3 times. The last time I installed I removed both the 40GB & the 120GB drives. Leaving only the one I was going to use for Ubuntu, the 200GB drive. After the installation I rebooted and Karmic loaded without problems. I'm in Karmic right now and it isn't all sluggish like it was with ext4, guess my old drives aren't good with ext4 *sight*.
But I can't use my Windows drive. When trying to boot directly from it, it gives me "GRUB Error 17" - I have to disconnect the Ubuntu drive to boot into Windows. Quick question: What the **** is going on?
Someone help, please.. I'm tired of this ****.. and if I have to install Karmic one more time, I won't. I'll just give up and disconnect my Ubuntu drive, put it away and let it accumulate dust somewhere, seriously.. Someone help me correct this without having to install the OS again.
The GRUB error is while the GRUB is loading. It doesn't give me the option to select a OS.
I have windows xp and now I have installed UBUNTU 9.10. When my laptop starts it comes up with the option of Windows Xp and Ubuntu. Selecting windows xp works fine here but Selecting UBUNTU comes up with another screen giving three options.
1. UBUNTU
2. UBUNTU recovery and
3. Windows Xp
Selecting any of the above doesnt work here. With option 1 & 2 it gives the error message
error: you need to load the kernel first
I am totally new to this UBUNTU.
I've finally gotten around to installing Ubuntu 10.10. I currently have it installed on on a 320GB HDD. It's the 64bit. I also have Windows 7 x64 on a 1TB HDD. After I installed it, I keeping getting "Error: You Need To Load the Kernel First." Windows 7 boots up fine, but Ubuntu doesn't. I'm almost completely new to Ubuntu so I don't know how I would go about fixing this.

I checked the /etc/inittab, the runlevel is defined as default 5. I think its the font problem, But i don't know how to reset & get back the 'fixed' font.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu since 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I only recently fully switched to Linux OS's, and Ubuntu is now my primary. I currently have 9.10 installed. CURRENTLY I also have Backtrack 4, and Fedora 12 (Ugh!).Previously, I thought something was wrong with my my filesystem in Ubuntu 9.10, and after an upgrade of the linux kernel, I started to get Error: You need to load the Kernel First. That's where my problems started. I had upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04 and I still had Grub Legacy, so I went through hoops to try and get it to work, but eventually everything just kind of broke, and I completely wiped off my partitions on it and started fresh installs of all 3.
And now that the new linux kernel is released, 2.6.31-20 generic (I think... That's what the highest number on a file I can find in /boot is)I went through a few more hoops and ladders and tried to get it to work, but to no avail. I've looked the internet for a solution to this and tried just about everything but there is no unified answer, and I've seen on Launchpad there are alot of bugs that are classified as 'Fixed', but the problem still remains.I took out the 'quiet splash' part in the GRUB2 line for the newest kernel and it didn't do anything. It only changed it to "Error: Couldn't find file".This is the top two kernels (Main and Recovery for the new, and Main and Recovery for the previous working one)

Had 3 partitions on a hard disk. Booted vista & deleted the windows 7 partition & then expanded the vista partition into the windows 7 partition. Vista kept working but when i rebooted grub starts to load & gets an error 17. How do i recover?
Previously grub would come up & give me the choice of ubuntu or vista. If i selected vista i got the choice of vista or windows 7.
I have an existing blog that I migrated to ubuntu server recently. The site was running fine until I transfered it over to ubuntu. I get a 404 error whenever I view pages that is not my index. I believe it has to do with my .htaccess file.

Anyways, I put the hard drive in an external unit, and I ran fsck. Many errors came up and they were all fixed. I was able to mount the drive on my other computer and back up files in the home directory.
If I try to select recovery mode and the same error appears.
What can I do in this case? Can I somehow get into a recovery-like mode off of the livecd to maybe fix the packages that might be "messed up"?
I just did a clean install of 11.04. Now when I try to boot the machine I get the following error: Quote:

Then I am taken to the Grub menu. Selecting anything from the Grub menu brings this error back up. So now I'm stuck with a computer that won't work.?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI managed somehow to successfully install a dual boot with Ubuntu 9.02 and Windows XP. Ubuntu was on a PATA drive and the WinXP was on a SATA drive. The SATA drive was configured to boot first. As I was having problems with Ubuntu I booted into WinXP, re-formatted the PATA drive, then restarted the computer and installed Ubuntu 9.10. It all went well.I rebooted the machine and the following message was on the screen:

I rebooted, changed the boot order so that the PATA disk (Ubuntu) started first, then the SATA(WinXP). Ubuntu loaded up the dual boot screen.I chose WINXP, but I was greeted with a black screen.I rebooted again and chose to load Ubuntu, which it did without a hitch.what I should do to restore my access to WinXP? Or should I start again? If so, how?
I decided I wanted to give ubuntu a go by installing it on a 4GB USB drive.

I booted up and it hung on the 'mounting file system', I left it for ages and eventually it goes to a black screen and prints out an error message, I can't type anything on my keyboard.

Ubuntu 9.10 stops booting with apparmor profiles failed to load error message in recovery mode.In the usual mode it hangs at the logo stage.I tried all the kernels listed but the boot process hangs every time.I searched for a solution but could not find it. Windows 7 boots fine.I haven't installed grub to the MBR.I had to reinstall the windows bootloader but I am not sure if it's related to the problem.I would like not to reinstall the os.
View 7 Replies View Relatedfor the last few releases, starting with 9.04 i've been having serious crashing problems with the nvidia driver. whether i installed it manually using the latest drivers directly from nvidia, or installing them through the restricted driver option. after a few hours CRASH. it's been awful. and i tried everything from this side to the moon to fix this issue, all to no avail. no idea why i've even stayed with ubuntu after all these issues. came from the debian world back in 5.04, and almost moved back a few times. but i did a clean install of 10.04, and thought i'd give the nvidia driver one last chance... if it didn't work i'd be moving back home to debian (with the suspicion the issue would stay).
so after i tried the restricted driver and CRASH. nothing to fix it. then i thought ok i'll try to use the latest driver from nvidia. but ran into this error when installing it:

I've installed Fontmatrix. It deactivates fonts correctly, but when I try to reactivate them, it does not do so, and gives this error message: "Fontmatrix has been unable to load the font in file /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-liberation/LiberationMono-Bold.ttf. Please check missing files." It is still possible to reinstall them using Gnome Font Viewer. Does anyone know what to do about this?

I've just carried out an update and when I rebooted it won't let me passed the choose screen with Windows 7 or Ubuntu on it, I choose the Ubuntu and Error: unknown command - load font flashes for a second and then the machine reboots!I can't get any further into Ubuntu than that, any one have any ideas of how I can get back in????
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been loading Red Hat OS 5.5 x86_64 version in HP's Proliant DL 380 G7. One of the Server's after triggering the iLO and setting the Server to the determine the hostname so that, it can check the eth0 settings and then it probes for the video adapter, the screen goes completely blue and the characters that are on the screen at this point are not readable at all..Looks like to me the screen is throwing the system characters completely leaving no trace of what's going on. The screen is blue with those characters and the server is freezing...Looks like a hardware iLO issue, but not sure. When I restarted the server, it picked up the PXE boot and loaded windows upto the serial key and all that loading process was readable.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 and used 'U904p' a program I had for creating 9.04 live USB I had before. I had 9.04 on the USB pen but thought that 9.10 would be better to install right away rather than upgrading it. So I run through the CLI and make it bootable and all that. I come to put in my pretty old (Spare parts mashed together) Linux box. I get this about 1 minute after the Ubuntu logo and loading bar:
Top of page: WARNING: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic: No such file or directory
Then lots of 'FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31-14generic/modules.dep No Such file or directory'
Then I am dumped in to Busybox in initramfs command line. I have been googling and look around the forums all last night and this morning. I find loads of stuff from 9.04 but not 9.10? I tried the old 'Pull USB pen when Ubuntu log shows' and 'Changed SATA settings' turned them off in end, using IDE. Could it be that I created it using the old U904p program. I will look in to the newer one. Seen it about on forums. Otherwise any ideas? I am wanting to build a FOG box for imaging all my PC's and trailing it for work.
I just downloaded and installed Ubuntu a few days ago (on my Windows Vista Laptop), played around with it, did some trouble shooting (got my wifi card working!)... and am generally enjoying it.However, I am having issues loading my Yahoo Mail. I am using the newest version of Opera (which I also run on windows), but have tried Firefox as well. I am having absolutely no issues with Yahoo mail when I use Windows (in Opera, firefox, chrome, and IE), but can not get it to load at all with Ubuntu. Basically I can get to the Yahoo home page no problem, and can access any of the links etc., except for Mail. When I click it, I just get an error page (as if there was no Internet connection). I have not had problems with any other sites.I'm thinking its some kind of scripting/application conflict, but like I said this whole Linux thing is brand new to me. Have only ever really used Windows in the past.I'm hoping to get these minor issues hashed out, and eventually just drop Windows out of my reality.
