Ubuntu :: Configure To Run In Failsave Graphics?
Mar 7, 2011
Running 10.10 and graphics card has just died. I have to start in recovery mode from grub screen and manually request failsafe graphics. For some reason Ubuntu will not Reconfigure my graphics set up, so everytime I switch on I have to go through the screens to run in failsafe mode. Can I do something so that Ubuntu will just boot in this mode? I will replace the card but it may take some time. My monior is currently plugged into the motherbord which is a ASROCK G31M - R2.0 which has Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 graphics.

Sometime back my Nvidia card blew up and I had to order a new one -problem was I had to run in Failsave graphics. If you have not change /etc/X11/xorg.conf and have not install any graphics drivers,
[Code]...
I started in Failsave graphics each fresh boot. New Nvidia card arrived today and installed but I cannot loaded the drivers. System/Admin/Additional Drivers tells me I have the Recommended Driver installed but when I go System/Admin/Nvidia Server Settings I'm informed You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. I open terminal as root and type nvidia-xconfig and I get:

I've got this Medion graphics tablet that I somehow managed to get working with on Karmic, however when I updated to Lucid Lynx, no matter what I do, I can't seem to get the damn thing reconfigured to work. To be honest, I don't even remember how I did it last time, and all of the stuff I've read so far regarding compiling just give me an error:
./xf86Wacom.c:545: error: too few arguments to function 'InitValuatorAxisStruct'
Quick info:
Lucid Lynx Alpha 3(Latest?)
EDIT NOW ON KARMIC KOALA.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says
Current usage: Unknown
There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power. It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector. The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

I have a Packard Bell Imedia desktop with on-board ATI graphics. I also have a spare Nvidia PCI card. Is there a way I could use the Nvidia to run a second screen, if so how as the Nvidia and fglrx drivers seem to collide in a show stopping way!!I am running Kubuntu Intrepid, but have resorted to Gnome as KDE4 went spectacularly wrong on me.

I found a tool made for Ubuntu called Xautoclick. I downloaded it and it is called "xautoclick-0.30.tar.gz" The installation notes say "tallatBe sure you have the proper development packages for your distribution installed (i.e. something like xserver-xorg-dev, gtk2-dev, et cetera). After that, run:
./configure make sudo make install" I have no clue what to do... I typed in "./configure" in the terminal and it says "bash: ./configure: No such file or directory?

kpilot worked just fine with my Palm Tungsten T3 on OpenSuse 10.3. I recently upgraded to 11.2 and have had numerous problems. It took me a while to get the hardware talking (documented in another thread), but now the sync is proving to be problematic. A hotsync happens - and I can also sync fully with jpilot, but the sync isn't going anywhere. I'm hoping to sync with kontact, but it's impossible to tell as kpilot hangs whenever I try to configure the conduits through the "Configure kpilot" menu item. When syncing, the log complains of missing conduits:
Version: KPilot 5.3.0 (KDE 4.3.0)
Version: pilot-link 0.12.3
Version: KDE 4.3.1 (KDE 4.3.1) "release 6"
Version: Qt 4.5.3

I recently upgraded to Lucid and am having difficulty finding and installing the ATI graphics driver for my machine. When I open Administration > Hardware Drivers, the list is completely empty. I've searched the forums but haven't found a way to get the driver installed. My graphics card is an ATI Radeon X1200 series, and my computer is a Toshiba Satellite A215-S5818.

Right now I'm working in failsafe graphics mode, with the menu not working. I upgraded to 11.04, all was OK until reboot. Then It said that something about my hardware not supporting Unity. Then It loaded my normal screen. I never had problems with my card, compiz and 3d worked, so I figured it was the driver. It's a NVIDIA. I installed "173", that's all I remember, and an experimental driver. One of them was required to run unity, don't remember which.
After reboot, I got a screen with no menu whatsoever. So no way to do anything. Now I'm in failsafe mode.I could return back to my normal driver, if I could launch the program that does it. But the menu is not working, just "applications", nothing else. How can I go back to my normal display? What is the command line line to launch the driver manager? Also, since the upgrade, it boots like 3 times slower than usual. I'm less enthusiastic about ubuntu now. How do I return to gnome (BTW at login the bottom bar is WHITE, with no option to run GNOME whatsoever. So I have no choice than to use unity, which does not work at all).

My situation is like so: I have two NVIDIA GTX 460 graphics cards running the latest (260.19.06) proprietary drivers. I SLI these together under Windows 7 for gaming. However, for day to day usage I have Ubuntu 10.1 running on my two monitors using twinview.
My problem is that the xserver refuses to load (I get the "screens found, but none have a usable configuration" error) when both my graphics cards are plugged in and powered; if I remove the power to one, the system works fine. If I was just using Ubuntu, I would simply leave one unplugged but, because I'm not, its a pain to have to plug/unplug one every time I want to switch operating system.
I have tried every modification to the xorg.conf file that I can think of and a few more found in the documentation and via google, all to no avail. I have also tried everything again with twinview disabled and only one monitor plugged in.
I am aware that SLI isn't compatible with twinview, I don't really need to use it, although it would, of course, be nice.

Ubuntu shuts itself down and displays message that it is running low on graphics, giving me options to run in low graphics mode or to troubleshoot. I have been given the following advice but have no idea what to do:
You are using the open driver i915 as you are using an intel based video
chip.
Sounds like you need an xorg.conf file to define the display a little better as udev is not detecting. Here is a sample file you can start with: (Refers to a URL that led me to this forum)
You can ignore any sections and entrys regarding keyboards as udev is
pretty awesome at picking those up

I've just upgraded my Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, however I'm getting troubles with it. In 10.10 I had no problem at all, I could use all desktop effects with compiz(cube, effects on windows, etc). However since I'm using 11.04 I'm no able to use no even the most basic desktop efects, the only way to work is using the mode Ubuntu Classic with no effects, and even so there's some weird pixeling at the right lower and upper part of the screen.
If I log in in modes Ubuntu or Ubuntu Classic with effects, the screen starts blinking and it doesn't allow me to see the menu or windows. Some times the windows get stuck at the upper panel without the minimize, maximize and close buttons. Since I was able to use all desktop effects in the former version, shouldn't I be able to do it in this one?

I have to use acpi=off because my PC is crushing/freezing during installation and 2 mins after boot up. Currently I'm using acpi=ht to enable second CPU.
The problem is that my Intel graphic card is slow and Xorg is taking a lot of CPU.
I'm also not able to enable compiz when disabling acpi. The biggest problem is the MythTV that is so slow in the menu area alone that I'm not watching any TV in it lately.
When I'm not, it's crushing, no CPU spikes, no strange behavior just crushing without any logs.
Ubuntu 8.10 was running well on the box.

I've put a second video card in my computer running 9.10(64-bit) to setup a 3rd monitor.
I'm using the following video cards with the 190 driver from nVidia:
Video Card 0: nVidia GeForce 9500 (PCI express x16)
Video Card 1: nVidia GeForce 6200 (PCI)
but when i run lspci the second video card isn't seen in the list. The bios is set to automatic detection, and I've seen it work on a identical second system that has windows 7 so I know the bios is capable of running the two cards concurrently.
I've verified the 190 driver is compatible with the 6200 series and have tested it by setting the bios to use the (PCI) device manually.

I think I have found a bug, (or maybe just an omission to the new version.)I have a Dell sx270 with P4 and Intel 82865G graphics on board. I cannot see the display in either Normal or Safe Graphics for any option on the 9.10 installation cd EXCEPT memory test, which does show up in Normal mode.
What I see is; When I make a selection, the screen blanks, I see a cursor in the upper left, and then my monitor tells me that it is not connected. The cd and drive happily do their respective things, I just cannot see anything on the screen.
When I return to 8.04, (running the 64 bit on my laptop!) and download the 32 bit desktop version, I get very different results; In Normal mode, the screen is visible until about 80-90% of the ubuntu progress bar is filled, the screen blanks, a curser shows in the upper left, and then my monitor says "no connection".
Try this again in Safe Graphics mode; same spot and the display tells me it is re-adjusting and 'Bob's your uncle,' installation is working fine. So, Did someone decide not to support earlier hardware, or did something get left out?
I would like an answer before I attempt to up-date the 8.04 I just installed. Nothing worse than making a graphics change that cannot be undone, and I would like to try 9.10 (on this desktop) BEFORE I update my laptop from 8.04.

Unsure whether this would cause all sorts of problems with ubuntu and/or the nvidia drivers (2 quatro NVS 290's).

also there are no tabs for any of the open windows on my "start bar" (the lower bar across the screen... also i cant switch to different desktops anymore and i cant maximize/minize or drag windows like my web browser around (probably cause there isnt a window manager running)....

Have just moved into my gf's place from a shared accomodation and have taken my mythbuntu (8.04) box with me. Have plugged it into her Sony tv and initially it looks promising, bios screen shows and so does the mythbuntu splash. But after that the tv just sits there with a message saying "out of range". Anyone got any ideas how I can force it into a low graphics mode or similar so at the very least I can access the desktop.
Oh and to make things worse my gf has no Internet access (writing this on my phone) and I don't have a livecd to hand
