Ubuntu :: Graphics After Upgrading To 11.04?
Apr 29, 2011
I've just upgraded my Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04, however I'm getting troubles with it. In 10.10 I had no problem at all, I could use all desktop effects with compiz(cube, effects on windows, etc). However since I'm using 11.04 I'm no able to use no even the most basic desktop efects, the only way to work is using the mode Ubuntu Classic with no effects, and even so there's some weird pixeling at the right lower and upper part of the screen.
If I log in in modes Ubuntu or Ubuntu Classic with effects, the screen starts blinking and it doesn't allow me to see the menu or windows. Some times the windows get stuck at the upper panel without the minimize, maximize and close buttons. Since I was able to use all desktop effects in the former version, shouldn't I be able to do it in this one?

I upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 and have lots of graphics problems. I have ATI Radeon 3200 HD graphics built into the motherboard. How does one use the "nomodeset"?
Originally had no display, then booted to recovery mode and used low graphics, installed the "ati-driver-installer-11-x86.x86_64.run" using the sh command line from a terminal window. But now when I try to launch the catalyst control center I get an error message,
Quote: There was a problem initializing Catalyst Control Center Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver appropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig. Now Google Earth won't function at all, and I cannot logout or switch user, I have to reboot.

I have an older Dell Inspiron 4550 w/ 2G memory and 38G HD. I believe I have GE440 graphics card. I am running 10.04, but the graphics are slower than I would like and when I tried to upgrade to 10.10, my card was not supported and I had to re-install 10.04.
- Can anyone recommend a good graphics card to choose for an upgrade for this machine?
- Is changing graphics cards pretty much the same as installing a memory chip, What is the best way to do the upgrade?

Sick and tired of sluggish performance using the onboard X1200 graphics so I just ordered a cheap GeForce 8400 with 256MB DDR2 memory. If I simply disable the on board graphics then plug the GeForce card in, will I have to re-install Ubuntu or will the system be clever enough to detect and configure the card for me?

I've recently upgraded from Slackware 12.2 to Slackware 13.0 and so far everything works fine with one exception: the TightVNC package that comes with Slackware-13.0 (in /extra) produces a garbled desktop. Applications look fine, but the default desktop of 13.0 is corrupted. Restarting the VNC server doesn't solve the problem. Before the upgrade, I had 1.3.9 compiled from source. I have just installed the 1.3.10 package that came with Slack-13.0 on top of what was there, hoping it would overwrite old files as needed (couldn't find an automatic uninstall procedure for 1.3.9).
I have attached a printscreen. Notice the taskbar and the top left quarter of the screen. Firefox seems to be rendered properly though. Has anyone encountered this before or may have a clue what could be causing it?

I've upgraded Slackware-13.1 I had installed to Slackware-Current using a local tree I had download with mirror-slackware-current.sh script, but when I rebooted I could not get the graphics to load. I think it's because I've also modified /etc/groups and add an username after audio: and video: group, but I forgot that and had to remove slackware from the machine.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says
Current usage: Unknown
There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power. It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector. The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

I have a Packard Bell Imedia desktop with on-board ATI graphics. I also have a spare Nvidia PCI card. Is there a way I could use the Nvidia to run a second screen, if so how as the Nvidia and fglrx drivers seem to collide in a show stopping way!!I am running Kubuntu Intrepid, but have resorted to Gnome as KDE4 went spectacularly wrong on me.

I am trying to upgrade KDE 4.4.5 to 4.5.0 (Kubuntu 10.04 LTS) but the attempt results in 22 packages that can be upgraded and 111 blocked updates.
The problem is due to a dependency issue with libqt4-assistant and ktorrent. aptutide offer me a solution to remove these two packages, as well as some other packages that seem important to me, and leave package kubuntu-desktop with unresolved dependencies. II don't know what that lib is needed for, but I use ktorrent every day. So this solution seems like a bad one to me.
How to upgrade to KDE 4.5 and keep ktorrent? Or is it better to wait for Kubuntu 10.10 release and then do a distro upgrade (which will surely get round the problem)?

I've recently done a full installation of 10.04 on my machine. Not too long after, I applied for a free 10.10 CD that Ubuntu offers instead of donwloading it due to no internet access.
How can I upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 using the free CD that Ubuntu mailed to me?
I don't really want to consider doing a clean installation again as I have important programs and plug-ins installed on my current version.

How do I upgrade Xubuntu over the internet? I don't want to have to download torrents and stuff, but when I tried to upgrade via the update manager, it started upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 instead of Xubuntu. Now it's just sitting here telling me I have over a thousand updates available even though I never typed yes to the upgrade (I started it at the command line). I don't know how to shut it down.
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. It actually was upgrading to xubuntu after all.

I've had the 10.04 installed on a notebook for about a week now and I want to upgrade to the LTS that was released today. When I go to check updates it shows me that everything is already updated. How can this be? Is there another way to upgrade from RC to LTS that I don't know about?

I'm currently upgrading from ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 (I installed my ubuntu using the windows ubuntu installer, wubi, a few months ago). I started the update manager to upgrade, and everything was going fine until it started installing the upgrades, more specifically when it got to "Preparing memtest86+", when it started continuously saying in the terminal "Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic". It's been stuck at "About 43 minutes remaining" for about half an hour. I've included a screenshot of my computer in the state it is in as I type this message.

I have several remotely hosted boxes (running 9.10 Server 64-bit) that I'd like to upgrade at some point to Lucid Server, preferably using do-release-upgrade.
Is this possible currently via SSH, without lockout or breakage?
Theoretically, I can have the datacenter staff do the upgrade for me, but I'd prefer to do it myself if it's possible to do so.

I am upgrading to Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 1. This is on my gaming machine so I can test it and if it screws my system up, I can reinstall. I have not seen any issues so far. I think there might be a thread already open for talking about 10.10 but I am creating this thread anyways.
The upgrade is going faster than when i first did the upgrade earlier this month.I am testing Ubuntu 10.10 on a computer with a 1.6Ghz AMD 64 processor. It has 3 GB ram and a 500GB hard drive. 128 MB video ram.
Note: This is The emachines EL 1200-06w I am using a Belkin wireless card which is only able to be used with the help of Windows Wireless Drivers (ndiswrapper).
I plan to report bugs in launchpad. Last time, Ubuntu could not start after an update. Now, I am risking down time by using the Alpha version again. I am installing by going to: Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal In Terminal, I enter in
Code:
sudo update-manager -d and then it asks for a password to open update manager. Then it shows the upgrade is available. I am still at the process of upgrading the computer. I am running Ubunut 10.04 32 bit at the moment.
UPDATE: I didn't need ndiswrapper, and I am able to now use Natty, where it works as it should.

sudo apt-get install update-manager-core (Which says its up to date)
and then
sudo do-release-upgrade
which i found here:

But all it comes back with is:
No new release found.
From what i gather i need to go to 8 before i can go to 10.
