The last few days I have had to reboot my Ubuntu-workstation when the screen suddenly goes black. After some seconds I get a pop-up with the message:
Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
There is some buttons that tells me I can do different things (like reconfiguration ) but whatever I do I end up loosing all windows I worked in earlier. And having to reboot to get back full resolution. I have not found any way to reproduce this behavior. It has happened after being logged in for several days and sometimes just after boot and login when I'm starting an xterm and in all time intervals in between the output of:
sudo lshw -C display

Recently upgraded to 10.04 after countless problems w/ Karmic & already problems with Lucid! The screen sometimes suddenly goes black, then goes into low graphics mode, if I let it, thereby changing screen rez & unless I reboot, I am stuck in this mode. If I don't choose temporary low graphics mode, I must reboot. Many others seem to be experiencing the same problem yet have been offered no solution by the developers. So.

If I let my computer sit for about 10 minutes, I lose all the windows I had open (gnome) and i get a message saying I'm running in low graphics mode. I have to restart X in low graphics mode to get it to work. i can't tell the difference, but as an avid writer, I often feel the need to get up and think about whatever I have open in oowriter.

I have a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 motherboard with integrated graphics that shows up on lspci as an ATI Radeon 2100. I also bought a PCI-Express Nvidia graphics card so I could use the VDPAU feature on Linux (plays H.264 in hardware). The BIOS has three settings about which display to initialize first:
Integrated graphics
PCI graphics
PCI-Express graphics (PEG)
I set the BIOS on PEG, but
I cannot get anything, not even a splash screen or POST messages, to emerge from the PCI-Express graphics card. (I'm using a DVI connector; the card also has an HDMI output.)I cannot get the kernel lspci to see the graphics card; the only VGA controller it acknowledges is the integrated one.Running dmidecode acknowledges the existence of an x16 PCI Express slot, and it says
Current usage: Unknown
There is an additional BIOS setting called "Internal Graphics Mode" which is normally set to "Auto" which means it is supposed to prefer a PCI Express VGA card. I set it to "Disabled" which now means I'm getting no output at all. I will soon be learning how to do a BIOS reset!
Other information: The PCI-E card is a MSI N210-MD512H GeForce 210. This is a fanless card. Although there are no fans to see turning, the heat sink on the PCI-E card is definitely getting hot, so the card is getting some sort of power. It gets all its power from the PCI-E slot; there is no external power connector. The BIOS is an AMI Award BIOS.how can I make the PCI Express graphics card visible to Ubuntu?

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

I have a Packard Bell Imedia desktop with on-board ATI graphics. I also have a spare Nvidia PCI card. Is there a way I could use the Nvidia to run a second screen, if so how as the Nvidia and fglrx drivers seem to collide in a show stopping way!!I am running Kubuntu Intrepid, but have resorted to Gnome as KDE4 went spectacularly wrong on me.

I don't know what happened, but suddenly I can't log in my Ubuntu 10.04 install. It was working fine as recently as yesterday, and nothing nasty happened to the hard drive it's on (hardware failure, poweroff without proper shutdown, etc.). When I tried to log in earlier, all that happened was this: the screen blanked momentarily, then I was back at the login screen again, as if I had never tried to log in.
It's not that I'm entering an incorrect password. I don't get any kind of error message. I just get kicked back to the login screen. WTF is going on? I'm posting this from my Ubuntu 9.10 install, which still works. I guess I could use Ctrl + F1 to login to Ubuntu 10.04 on the command line, but I'm not sure what I could do from there to find out what's gone wrong.

I upgraded my old HP Pavilion desktop to 11.04 a few weeks ago and at first things were fine, but recently the PC refuses to wake up in the morning. I assume it's going in to sleep mode overnight, but no matter what I push on the mouse or keyboard it won't wake up. I have set both the PC and screen in Power Management Preferences to Never go to sleep, but it doesn't seem to matter and it sleeps regardless. how I can either make it not sleep, or sleep a little lighter so it wakes up without a hard reboot?

I tend to forget stuff if I don't work with it for awhile. somehow I struggled through and figured out (with a lot of help) how to set up Ubuntu Intrepid server edition on my computer, and am serving my website from my computer. For times when the free DNS nameserver is 'closed' (often lol) I use localhost and can see/work on my site. Suddenly, when I type localhost into the address bar, I get a blank page, nothing! I'm not sure what to do....can someone please help because am going to use my website to present a class project, and was going to use localhost (bring my computer) in case the nameserver was down, I have to be able to display it.

All of my PHP web pages are now loading incredibly slow. I created a simple "Hello World!" script and timed retrieving it from a terminal using wget and it took 3min 9seconds. A wget of the home page of a PHP-based site also took 3min 9seconds. I have a PHP script that I run from the command line that I use to look for malicious FTP attempts and it took - you guessed it - 3min 9seconds. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and have applied all of the latest updates for that version.
One thing I did notice was a proliferation of apache2 processes. With every request for a page I seem to get 7 or so new apache2 processes.

I have no idea what happened, but as of around a week ago, I can no longer print in Ubuntu 10.04.
The printer is a Brother MFC-7440N connected to my LAN. I have never had a problem before printing to it from any of my computers, regardless of whether they were running Windows XP, Windows 7, or Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04. I am still able to print from Windows 7, so I'm reasonably sure there's nothing wrong with the printer or network configuration.
But I can't get it to print at all from Ubuntu. I already tried reinstalling the drivers and re-setting it up in CUPS - no change. Every time I try to print a test page, the printer does nothing, and "Document Print Status" shows the job as eternally "Pending."
If I go to the CUPS printer page [url], the job status shows as "Paused - "Unable to locate printer 'MFC-7440N'!"
I don't know why CUPS thinks it can't locate the printer. When I was setting up the printer in CUPS, CUPS properly detected it on the network, no problem.
I can see the printer in the CUPS administration page, and even change settings. The one thing I cannot do is get it to actually print!
Like I said, the printer works fine through Windows, so I think this is an Ubuntu problem, not a printer problem.
When I open "System->Administration->Printing," there's an icon of the printer with a green-circle check mark, as if everything is OK. But if I right-click, the "Enabled" box is not checked. Checking it myself has no apparent effect.

My portable HDD is suddenly saying that I don't have write permission anymore.
properties>permissions says that I have full read/write permission over the top folder of the drive. After looking in the permissions I'm out of ideas.
I checked the properties of the drive itself and it said "Permissions could not be determined"
I haven't changed the permissions deliberately - I use this hard drive every other day to move movies across to my TV.

Old HP computer, came with XP, installed Ubuntu 8.03, upgraded to 9.10, installed xubuntu-desktop for speed.
Ever since I've started dual-booting Ubuntu with Xp, I've been able to access my XP partition by going to Places-HP_PAVILION, which has always been mounted at /media/HP_PAVILION, but recently, within the last few days or so, it hasn't been appearing anywhere. I'm still able to mount it if it use # mount /dev/sda2 /*mount point*, but that's a pain, and I'd rather not use a workaround if I don't have to. Any suggestions? I'd really prefer if it mounted to /media/, and had it's own shortcut in the Places menu, like flash drives, memory cards, and such get. I've tried my Flash Drive, and that does everything it's supposed to.

I turn on my laptop running 64-bit karmic (if that helps anyone), open GNU Emacs 23.1.1 with the org files I've been working on, and for some reason it is not recognising standard key bindings, for the first time ever, with no reason I can conceive. What does "M-kp-enter is undefined" mean when it seemed well defined not long before? It seems using Esc-enter still works.. can anyone suggest if there are any config files I might need to edit, or what else could have gone wrong?

So I was happily using tweetdeck on Adobe Air in my Ubuntu 9.10 x64 installation when it suddenly stopped. It now reports a series of errors. First I get a pop up that says. "You are trying to connect to an unverified server s3.amazonaws.com (on port 443). Do you trust this server, and want to go ahead with the connection? - view certificate - This Session - Never"
Selecting any option makes no difference and takes me to the second error. "Ooops, TweetDeck can't find your data. TweetDeck is having trouble using some of your passwords that are stored securely on your machine. Clicking Submit will clear this data so that you continue to use TweetDeck. Please note that you will have to add your accounts to TweetDeeck again. - OK"
I then click OK many times. Eventually I get the third error; "Sorry, Adobe AIR is having a problem running on this computer. It looks like your computer is one of a very small number of computers that don't play well with Adobe AIR. We're actively working with Adobe on this, and it would really help us if you would let us know that you're having trouble by opening a ticket at http://support.tweetdeck.com/tickets/new - OK"
I then click OK many times and get a blank Tweetdeck. Nothing works. I can not setup an account or even load the settings pane. I can "close" it, but the icon in the top bar stays and I cannot remove it till I reboot. I've uninstalled tweetdeck. Then Adobe AIR. Then re-installed both and I get the same error.

Like many others I recently upgraded to 10.04. So far it's generally an *excellent* upgrade. Very promising LTS release. However, mouse clicks are suddenly not behaving as expected in applications (including system config apps). In these, I must ctrl-click to get proper left and right click behavior. Strangely, on both the top panel and on the awn dock, clicks behave as they should. One final note, this behavior was not immediately present after the 10.04 installation. It started the day after the 10.04 release. Currently in the process of checking recent installs to see if anything would affect this.

I have my "documents" folder pointing to a Samba share on a 9.10 server. (Client is 64 bit 9.10). In /etc/fstab I have
Code:
//192.168.20.102/sean/Documents /home/sean/Documents cifs credentials=/home/sean/.smbcredentials,uid=1000,gid=1000
This always used to mount automatically and has suddenly stopped. Same result if I use smbfs instead of cifs. I have worked around this by adding noauto and then mounting it in /etc/rc.local.
Anyone else had this and fixed it so that the share mounts at boot rather than login. I do have some cron tasks that require this to be mounted and assume they will fail unless I login immediately after a reboot.
