Ubuntu :: Communication Between Client And Server When DHCP Is Enabled?

Sep 28, 2010

I have an embedded device which acts as a client, and a server at office. The IP address of the client is allocated by DHCP, so its IP address is actually variable. I would like to know what is the simpliest way to maintain the communication between client and server when DHCP is enabled. I once used socket many years ago to communicate between the client and the server. If I remember it right, I actually bypassed the dynamic IP issues by using the computer name to replace the IP address. Even the client is not at the same local network as the server, the scheme still worked. Correct me if my memory cheated me. if socket is still the best solution for this kind of application involving DHCP? I also heard from someone that it is necessary to implement multicast discovery protocols named BONJOUR, but I don't think it is necessary

Ubuntu Servers :: DHCP Server And DHCP Client Simultaneously?

Aug 4, 2010

I have an embedded device for which I've created an html configuration page. This page allows you to set static IPs, dhcp, and can scan for wireless devices. My problem is that in order to access the device it requires that it runs as a dhcp server otherwise people are not assigned an IP and so can not access the embedded devices static IP. (This config page is for the laymen and so they are not the type who are able to set up their own static IPs). One of the potential options is to have the device connect to the network on eth0 acting as a dhcp client. However this prevents me from running a dhcp server. One solution I can think of is running a dhcp server only if it doesn't detect another dhcp server running on the network.

Networking :: Configure A (openSUSE) Client To Dhcp To EBox DHCP Server - Lease An IP Address

Mar 25, 2010

I am puzzled with trying to configure a linux (openSUSE) client to dhcp to eBox DHCP server. I am using dhclient to lease an IP address with dhclient eth0 -s 10.45.48.108 and get a response

openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67 interval 4
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 10.45.48.108
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: Network is unreachable
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: please consult README file regarding broadcast address.

The server reports eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.45.200.2 to 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0

I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?

OpenSUSE Network :: Dhcp Client Does Not Receive The Dns Server Address

May 18, 2010

I have installed a working DNS server on my home network. I have an unique server, devoted to dns, gateway, storage which runs opensuse 11.0 (I known that it is rather old). Two new clients require DHCP. I have installed, using yast, a very simple DHCP server, according to the following config:

option domain-name "XXX.XXX";
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option routers 192.168.0.1;

[code]...

(I have tried to add "ddns-update-style none", and to remove the ntp-servers option, since my server is not a time server, without success). Unfortunately, even if the client (a mac running OSX 10.4) receives a right IP and gateway address, it displays neither dns server address nor default domain name. The same mac, on my office network (not managed by me), receives everything.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Connection - Can't Connect - Dhcp Enabled Automatically

Jun 20, 2010

Since that time I moved to Archlinux and I love it. I do however run lubuntu live from a USB for my work PC. I am having a problem with it. I think it's okay to post here because the core of the system is still Ubuntu. I don't think LXDE is the problem. I start up the live environment and it says 'wired connection connected' but I can not load any pages or do anything.

I thought it may be a problem with configuration so I copied down (from Windows) the IP, Subnet, Gateway and DNS. I put them in manually and it doesn't say connected any more and still no connection at all. I am unsure what to do from here. I am not really familiar with Ubuntu enough to try much. I tried to 'dhcpcd eth0' but dhcpcd isn't installed. I guess the default Ubuntu network manager has dhcp enabled automatically.

Ubuntu Networking :: DHCP Server No Longer Responses To DHCP Requests - Can't Ping Gateway

Oct 22, 2010

Back in April I set up a Ubuntu DHCP server and a multiple VLAN network [URL] to migrate our various servers, workstations, etc off the 192.168.1.1 /24 network that everything was on because we where running out of address space. I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.

Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces

Code:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto vlan100
iface vlan100 inet static

[code]....

why it can't reach the gateway, when I do a tcpdump I can see the DHCP requests come in on eth0 but the server never responds and I'm pretty sure its because it isn't "seeing" them since it thinks there isn't a network connection but I don't know how to trouble shoot to find out where the problem lies.

Networking :: Does Client Receive DHCP Options?

Apr 7, 2010

I am contemplating the use of DHCP options as a way of passing host-specific information to hosts that are booting disklessly from a network server. My intention is to have the DHCP client request certain options, and use the reply to configure the diskless hosts accordingly. The theory and rules behind all of this seem well documented on web sites such as die.net. However, the practical application of the protocol seems to be a lot less clear. What I am looking for is an explanation of what (existing, I hope) tool(s) are used, and how they are applied so that I can grab information from the DHCP server, and use it in userspace scripts or other programs. Specifically, my intention is to use a locally defined option that would give a host-specific directory name or filesystem to use by the diskless host to obtain host-specific applications and configuration data.

So far, all of the DHCP client documentation I've found relates to the usual function of assigning IPs, etc. I've looked at dhclient-script on a Redhat system and can't figure out the relationship between it and the dhclient program. Clearly, the script is invoked somehow by dhclient, but I don't understand where the transfer of data received from the server gets into the script. Does dhclient just create a list of exported environment variables the child script then gets access too? What are the rules for how variables are created and what variables are created?

Networking :: DMZ - No Communication Between Server And 2 Clients

Oct 28, 2010

Code:
DMZ
Server--Router0--Modem0 ISP2--Modem3--Router3--Client3
/
Client1--Router1--Modem1--ISP1--WAN
/
Client2--Router2--Modem2 ISP3--Modem4--Router4--Client4

The Server in the above diagram can be accessed by Client3 and Client4 but not at all by Client1 or Client2. Router0 specifies the Server as a DMZ Host. I would be more specific but this is not my server. I don't use a DMZ, I forward ports when they are needed. In this case I represent ISP1 and the server belongs to a befuddled client. Client1 & Client2 can send packets to each other, no problem. Could the DMZ be breaking communication between the Server and Clients 1 & 2?

Server :: Communication Between Apache And Resin?

May 16, 2010

I was going to upgrade apache from version 1.3 to version 2.2.15 on a test server (and later on prod servers).. i prepared really good for it by reading upgrading information, changes from 1.x - 2.x, read module documentation to check if any of the used modules had any different syntax and if it was supported for this new version of apache. Later i finally installed apache, upgraded all the used modules to be apache 2 compatible and everything seemed to go smooth. I started apache and resin and everything looked fine, the syntax was OK and everything so i reported back that it was ready.. but i got a feedback that the people that were going to use the server only got a proxy error or service unavailable error when apache was trying to send requests back to the backend resin server.. and this is the problem. I could just have told you that this was the problem, but i find it to be much easier if you have a little background information first to explain how the problem aried.

A couple of other people and myself has done quite extensive troubleshooting on this, we troubleshooted apache, mod_caucho and resin by themselves to check if it was any problems with them.. we could only find that mod_caucho didnt seem to behave correly, the caucho-status page was displaying an empty list of requests and what would be proxied back.. we are running the same version of mod_caucho and resin to be sure it would be compatible with eachother and all the software is running in 64-bit, only a 64-bit CentOS 4.4 OS (yes, the OS is really old but because of complications we are not ready to upgrade it yet).

When we try to telnet to the port where resin is listening its open and resin returns an X when you hit enter (like it should and says in Caucho' official troubleshooting tips). We have tried installing apache 2.2.11 instead of 2.2.15 and other versions of both resin and mod_caucho. Other modules has also been tried like mod_proxy to send the requests back and also the rewrite module with the P flag.. although this was not the preferred way to do it we only wanted to see if it had any difference which it didnt.

So after several hours of troubleshooting we are still not able to find the cause of why we are getting a proxy error (http 502) when apache is trying to send a request back. We have checked all the logs for apache and resin, we have also compiled the mod_caucho module with the "--enable-debug" option to get more verbose information but we didnt get any additional information this way eventhough we should according to Caucho' official site.

We have looked into both the resin and apache config and tried both ways of configuring mod_caucho.. and nothing seems to change the result.. we only get a 502 proxy error. So since it didnt work i downgraded to apache 1.3 one day and that was fine.. then it was upgraded again to apache 2.x to try to find out what the problems were but again we didnt find this.. so i was going to downgrade it again, but this time on a different test server, but after downgrading i for some very weird reason got the same proxy error i had when using apache 2 which is beyond my comprehension.. i just cannot understand this.

- has anyone had any similar experiences with or without the same setup ?

- does anyone know about any solution to this of can provide any additional advice on what to do further? Yes, we want the functionality in apache 2 so we will not settle with apache 1.3.. one of the features being the new filters to be able to capture requests for pre and post processing before they hit other modules.

Networking :: Change Debian Default Dhcp Client?

Also, I've tried to remove the package 'isc-dhcp-client', but it also would like to remove the following packages: isc-dhcp-client knm-runtime network-manager network-manager-kde

Moreover, it says no need the following packages anymore: usb-modeswitch dnsmasq-base libnm-util1 usb-modeswitch-data network-manager-ppp pptp-linux network-manager-openvpn libnm-glib-vpn1 libnm-glib2 modemmanager vpnc network-manager-vpnc

I would like to still be able to use kde-network-manager, because it is much easier to manage wifi connections using this interface.

Networking :: Notification From DHCP Client On Lease Change?

Jan 26, 2011

Is there any way to get an async notification (perhaps through something like a Linux message queue or Unix socket) when a DHCP client is either unable to renew its lease, or the address obtained changes from the previous value? I've got the ISC client and will dig into it to determine if it supports such a feature, but thought I'd ask here in parallel. (I'm trying to find out if there are any DHCP clients out there which already support this capability.)

If you're curious: We have an application where we're doing auto-registration of an IP camera to an external server. If the camera's dynamically assigned address changes, we need to restart the auto-reg state machine. I've seen implementations where a socket is opened and a SIOCGIFADDR ioctl used to fetch the IP addr, but I'd sure like to avoid polling like this if possible.

OpenSUSE Network :: Samba Config For DHCP Client Laptop?

Jan 11, 2010

I'll try not to be too wordy. Want to get my openSUSE 11.2 (fresh install) laptop to see my network shares ...not to be a server or share any files. I've looked at 50 websites and everything seems to be "server" and "share" oriented. Maybe I (newb) am confused by the terminology...

I have a router that provides DHCP. My LAN PC's consist of a Vista laptop, an XP DAW, and a Kubuntu file server. Somehow I got Kubuntu configured properly, all of the Windows machines can access it and vice-versa. The Kubuntu smb.conf does not work on this laptop, and it seems overkill -no shares needed here. And yes, I get DHCP and interweb on the laptop -posted this with it.

All I want is access to my (other) network drives from this (openSUSE 11.2) laptop. Not a server, not to share. This is easy... right? It's driving me nuts Is there a Samba configuration that will let me jump onto networks and surf Windows/Samba shares like any old Windoze box browsing Network Neighborhood? Do I have to be a Samba guru?
