View 4 RepliesThis may be a very basic question but I was wondering if there is a way through the command line to find out which interfaces are using dhcp. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 in case that makes a difference.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am puzzled with trying to configure a linux (openSUSE) client to dhcp to eBox DHCP server. I am using dhclient to lease an IP address with dhclient eth0 -s 10.45.48.108 and get a response
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPDISCOVER on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67 interval 4
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPOFFER from 10.45.48.108
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 10.45.48.108 port 67
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: Network is unreachable
openSUSE11232CL1 dhclient: send_packet: please consult README file regarding broadcast address.
The server reports eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
eBox141 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 10.45.200.2 to 00:0c:29:3e:57:a3 (openSUSE11232CL1.domain.net) via eth0
I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?
I have an embedded device for which I've created an html configuration page. This page allows you to set static IPs, dhcp, and can scan for wireless devices.My problem is that in order to access the device it requires that it runs as a dhcp server otherwise people are not assigned an IP and so can not access the embedded devices static IP. (This config page is for the laymen and so they are not the type who are able to set up their own static IPs). One of the potential options is to have the device connect to the network on eth0 acting as a dhcp client. However this prevents me from running a dhcp server.One solution I can think of is running a dhcp server only if it doesn't detect another dhcp server running on the network.

I've tried each of the four generated keys, one-by-one. I've also tried putting them all in and activating one, but the syntax seems to be wrong.
I read Alien's Wiki on it, and various other sources. People keep suggesting wicd, but I want it to work with the rc.inet1.conf file first. Just so I know what needs to be entered in order for that to happen. I have a desktop to set up eventually as well, and that shouldn't need wicd.

I am trying to install ununtu 10.04 but it fails every time with a message which flashes on and off with a message - mp bios bug no dhcp client installed at least I think that is what it says, it is on and off so fast. I have used Ubuntu for around three months but I also have to use windows for my work and this first started when I upgraded to win 7 and the pc gradually slowed down and became impossible to use. It also refuses to install. I suspect that I probably picked up a bug during installation of win 7 and new memory. I am having to type this on my wife's laptop.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI noticed that my internet connection wasn't automatically brought up each time I logged into Fedora so I opened the system-config-network tool and edited my network adapter by checking the box marked "automatically start at boot/login." To my surprise, the connection went down and upon trying to click on the device to let the manager bring up the connection the greyed-out phrase "device not managed" appeared underneath the device name and wouldn't allow me to connect.
Even when I used ifconfig/dhclient to get the connection up nothing happened. I could get the router to assign an IP address through DHCP, pinged a few sites to make sure it was legit, but still couldn't use firefox to browse anything. Seems as if network manager GUI is conflicting with command line attempts to bring the network up. I'd like to permanently disable system-config-network if possible because it's acting screwy!
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10, and I want DHCP to assign an IP address automatically. I can ping my router, and get a reply. I just have no idea how to do this.I'm trying to get my Ubuntu machine onto my Windows network.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have some beginner questions about DHCP, Avahi, and configuring a small home LAN.Suppose I have a dynamic IP address assigned by my ISP, which requires DHCP be enabled in my dsl modem/router/"firewall" [sic]. Suppose for simplicity I have just one PC behind the dsl modem.I think "enabling DHCP" in the modem/router means that a DHCP client runs on the router, which communicates with a DHCP server run by my ISP when I boot up a PC on my LAN. Is that guess correct? Can I get DHCP to assign a particular local IP, say 192.168.1.10 (which is not the one taken by the router--- for this discussion, let's say that is 192.168.1.0) to my PC each time I boot it up?
Now suppose I want to build a stand-alone firewall, so that my LAN will have the firewall and the first PC behind the modem, with the first PC virtually behind the firewall. By default, I think these will both have DHCP clients running which I need to configure properly. The firewall should also have a DHCP server which should control how local IP addresses are assigned, correct? I should try to arrange that the LAN has only DHCP server, only one NTP timeserver, only one DNS nameserver, correct?My first PC seems to have installed an autorun client called Avahi, which performs DNS multicast services and incorporates something called zeroconf which seems to have something to do with remote desktops, which I don't need and which is a potential security hazard. But it seems that Avahi is an intrinsic part of the KDE desktop and cannot be removed. Just want to be sure that Avahi can coexist comfortably with dhcp3-client, which is also installed on that PC. They perform different tasks, correct?If I can get the stand-alone firewall to work, I know I need to turn off the commercial firewall in the dslmodem/router/firewall device. Should I purchase a bridge and try to turn off the routing function also?
Does anyone know if you switch networks Where you have your servers hosted on a Non-DHCP Network, and you switch your IP addresses, then do you have to switch change/assign your new gateway address? I'm not sure if its manually assigned? How do you do it? Also what about nameserver resolving?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently working with wireless network kernel module.
This device initialiy gets its IP address by using DHCP,
but the problem is sometimes the new IP assigned for internal reason.
So what I want to do is assigning new(changed)IP address into exsiting
interface, or occuring DHCP renew event to cause update IP from kernel
level. This shold be done without user's intervention, so whenever the
kernel module detects IP changed(via underlying wireless
communication), it automatically correct update its IP address.
Q1) any functions or api to cause DHCP renew event from kernel level?
Q2) or any functions or api to assign IP address to specific interface?
I'm establishing a server that runs DHCP server, NAT gateway and VPN server. It have two physical interfaces, one for intranet and one for internet. The NAT gateway will give internet access for intranet. Another site will connect to this server by VPN. I need the server to assign a different subnet for that site other than the local site. Do anyone know how to config the DHCP server? Should I config the client classing, and how to do it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am contemplating the use of DHCP options as a way of passing host-specific information to hosts that are booting disklessly from a network server. My intention is to have the DHCP client request certain options, and use the reply to configure the diskless hosts accordingly. The theory and rules behind all of this seem well documented on web sites such as die.net. However, the practical application of the protocol seems to be a lot less clear. What I am looking for is an explanation of what (existing, I hope) tool(s) are used, and how they are applied so that I can grab information from the DHCP server, and use it in userspace scripts or other programs. Specifically, my intention is to use a locally defined option that would give a host-specific directory name or filesystem to use by the diskless host to obtain host-specific applications and configuration data.
So far, all of the DHCP client documentation I've found relates to the usual function of assigning IPs, etc. I've looked at dhclient-script on a Redhat system and can't figure out the relationship between it and the dhclient program. Clearly, the script is invoked somehow by dhclient, but I don't understand where the transfer of data received from the server gets into the script. Does dhclient just create a list of exported environment variables the child script then gets access too? What are the rules for how variables are created and what variables are created?
I'm a newbie to Linux and need some help in DHCP client configuration.
I'm trying to find a way to set hostname at the start up and get the DHCP client to register itself after it received an IP address.
I'm using Ubuntu 11.04. In a startup script, I have
Code:
start() {
log_daemon_msg "Starting selenium-server server: "
export DISPLAY=localhost:15.0
/usr/bin/Xvfb :15 -ac -screen 0 1024x768x16 &
From the console, how do I take a screen shot of the display at localhost:15.0 -- my DISPLAY above?
I have an embedded device which acts as a client, and a server at office. The IP address of the client is allocated by DHCP, so its IP address is actually variable. I would like to know what is the simpliest way to maintain the communication between client and server when DHCP is enabled. I once used socket many years ago to communicate between the client and the server. If I remember it right, I actually bypassed the dynamic IP issues by using the computer name to replace the IP address. Even the client is not at the same local network as the server, the scheme still worked. Correct me if my memory cheated me. if socket is still the best solution for this kind of application involving DHCP? I also heard from someone that it is necessary to implement multicast discovery protocols named BONJOUR, but I don't think it is necessary
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to use dhcpcd instead of dhclient on Ubuntu. The 'interfaces' man page say: "The dhcp Method This method may be used to obtain an address via DHCP with any of the tools: dhclient, pump, udhcpc, dhcpcd. (They have been listed in their order of precedence.)"
I can't find where to change this default order. I can uninstall dhcp3-client, but this will also remove ubuntu-minimal, which is not a good solution.
I would like to use dhcpcd instead of dhclient in my Debian installation, because I had some trouble with dhclient in the past and I assume the problem is still exists now with some equipments.
So I would like to use dhcpcd, but I couldn't find a way to tell the system to give higher priority to dhcpcd than dhclient.
Also, I've tried to remove the package 'isc-dhcp-client', but it also would like to remove the following packages: isc-dhcp-client knm-runtime network-manager network-manager-kde
Moreover, it says no need the following packages anymore: usb-modeswitch dnsmasq-base libnm-util1 usb-modeswitch-data network-manager-ppp pptp-linux network-manager-openvpn libnm-glib-vpn1 libnm-glib2 modemmanager vpnc network-manager-vpnc
I would like to still be able to use kde-network-manager, because it is much easier to manage wifi connections using this interface.
Is there any way to get an async notification (perhaps through something like a Linux message queue or Unix socket) when a DHCP client is either unable to renew its lease, or the address obtained changes from the previous value? I've got the ISC client and will dig into it to determine if it supports such a feature, but thought I'd ask here in parallel. (I'm trying to find out if there are any DHCP clients out there which already support this capability.)
If you're curious: We have an application where we're doing auto-registration of an IP camera to an external server. If the camera's dynamically assigned address changes, we need to restart the auto-reg state machine. I've seen implementations where a socket is opened and a SIOCGIFADDR ioctl used to fetch the IP addr, but I'd sure like to avoid polling like this if possible.
i want to disable all DHCP request, can i turn off the client that if a MAC address changes a dhcp request is not automatically made?reason for this: I have HP blade running with an Intel NC260M mezzanine card running with virtual connect. I have experienced problems with firmware levels with this card where the virtual connect mac address is ignored and the real MAC displayed. As we are using bonds on the servers and have 6 NICs installed we have to tie down the MAC address to a bond. A blade was replaced today without the firmware update and the real MAC appeared, a dhcp request was made and my-eth[2-3] and resolv.conf files were over-written by the dhcp supplied

I'll try not to be too wordy. Want to get my openSUSE 11.2 (fresh install) laptop to see my network shares ...not to be a server or share any files. I've looked at 50 websites and everything seems to be "server" and "share" oriented. Maybe I (newb) am confused by the terminology...
I have a router that provides DHCP. My LAN PC's consist of a Vista laptop, an XP DAW, and a Kubuntu file server. Somehow I got Kubuntu configured properly, all of the Windows machines can access it and vice-versa. The Kubuntu smb.conf does not work on this laptop, and it seems overkill -no shares needed here. And yes, I get DHCP and interweb on the laptop -posted this with it.
All I want is access to my (other) network drives from this (openSUSE 11.2) laptop. Not a server, not to share. This is easy... right? It's driving me nuts Is there a Samba configuration that will let me jump onto networks and surf Windows/Samba shares like any old Windoze box browsing Network Neighborhood? Do I have to be a Samba guru?
I have installed a working DNS server on my home network. I have an unique server, devoted to dns, gateway, storage which runs opensuse 11.0 (I known that it is rather old). Two new clients require DHCP. I have installed, using yast, a very simple DHCP server, according to the following config:
option domain-name "XXX.XXX";
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option routers 192.168.0.1;
[code]...
(I have tried to add "ddns-update-style none", and to remove the ntp-servers option, since my server is not a time server, without success). Unfortunately, even if the client (a mac running OSX 10.4) receives a right IP and gateway address, it displays neither dns server address nor default domain name. The same mac, on my office network (not managed by me), receives everything.
i hav configure dhcp server. but the ip is not getting assigned to my client machine.
