I interpret this as the server receives the request and the client accepting it but the lease does not last long and the connection breaks. what this could be and why the connection breaks? Or my undestanding is totally wrong on how it works and should work? And BTW, where is that README file that's referenced in the message I receive on the client?

Aug 7, 2011I am just trying to get SSH working between 2 local machines on OpensSuse 11.4 boxes. I have the SSHD daemon running, the firewall is configured to allow SSH to pass, and I am using SSH's password authentication. However, my machines cannot see each other. Anytime I try to SSH, I get "Could not resolve hostname<hostname>: Name or service not known."
Of course, that leads me to believe I need an entry in my /etc/hosts file. However, I use DHCP, and therefore have a dynamic IP address. Therefore, my hosts names will only be good until the next IP renewal. How in the world do I configure SSH with a DHCP assigned address?

Aug 4, 2010I have an embedded device for which I've created an html configuration page. This page allows you to set static IPs, dhcp, and can scan for wireless devices.My problem is that in order to access the device it requires that it runs as a dhcp server otherwise people are not assigned an IP and so can not access the embedded devices static IP. (This config page is for the laymen and so they are not the type who are able to set up their own static IPs). One of the potential options is to have the device connect to the network on eth0 acting as a dhcp client. However this prevents me from running a dhcp server.One solution I can think of is running a dhcp server only if it doesn't detect another dhcp server running on the network.

Jan 24, 2010This is probably an odd request, but figured I'd ask in case someone knew. We have a lab that has the IP range 172.10.0.0/16 (255.255.0.0). The lab gateway/DHCP assigns an IP in the range of 172.10.0.2-172.10.0.254. I want to set up my own DHCP server on a specific range, for example 172.10.10.1-172.10.10.254. I create a new host fine, but since it's set for DHCP, it uses the DHCP server at 172.10.0.1. Is there a way to force it to use a different DHCP server on the client side? I realize that I can work around this with exclusions on the 172.10.0.1 DHCP server, or use iptables to deny DHCP requests to specific MACs, but wanted to know if there was an (easier?) way to configure the client to use the 172.10.10.1 DHCP server instead of the 172.10.0.1 server?

Jun 3, 2010I'd like to access a samba/SSH server which itself is connected to a VPN Server, therefore acting as a VPN Client. As soon as the VPN Connection is established, samba and ssh connections to this VPN Client get a timeout. But not all of them.
To get a better understanding I made an overview. The first one is a general network overview, without any VPN Connection, the second one with the VPN Connection established.
Network Overview without VPN
I can access the server in several ways:
*From the router via ssh (router runs ipcop with busybox)
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)
Everything is working as it should.
Now the server that runs ssh and samba service connects to a VPN Server on the Internet, this is also working fine. Now it gets weird. The only samba/SSH connection that is still working is ssh directly from the router to the server. Everything else gets a timeout:
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)

Why is that? It seems from the little understanding I have of vpn and networking, that incoming packages (like samba request from the laptop) don't get send directly back over eth0 but over the vpn connection. This seems somewhat logic, BUT ssh from the router is still working. Why from the router and not from the laptop? I really can't get my head around it.
Configuration Overview
tldr; One Client acts as VPN Client and samba/SSH Server. As soon as the VPN Connection is established samba/SSH stop working, but only partially.
Networking :: Samba PDC - Client Machine Create New Profile When Server Down
Dec 14, 2010I have set samba domain. I am able to add win 7 and xp clients. All r working fine. But I have a doubt. If I shutdown the samba pdc server, I should be able to login the client machine with the same profile (which I had, when the samba pdc server was up). Now , if I shutdown the sambapdc, I am able to login the client machine, but new profile is being created. How to avoid this.
How to say to samba that the client machine should load the same profile which was created when the server was up and running. I do not want the client machines to create new a profile when the server is down bcoz in windows domain, when the windows domain is shutdown, the client machines are able to login with the same profile (the profile which was created when the domain was up). I wish to have same thing in samba pdc also.
Ubuntu Networking :: Assigned Computer A's Static Ip To Computer C Without Changing Dhcp Setting?
Aug 18, 2010I set up a dhcp server in the lan and assigned static ips to two computers, computer A and B, according to their mac address. Everything was running fine. But when I turned off computer A, connected computer C to the network, and assigned computer A's static ip to computer C without changing dhcp setting. Computer C was able to access the internet. When I turned on computer A, dhcp couldn't assign an ip address to it, and computer C showed an error message of ip conflict and failed to use internet. I wonder if dhcp server is able to prevent other computer from using the same static ip that is already assigned to a computer according to its mac address.

Sep 28, 2010I have an embedded device which acts as a client, and a server at office. The IP address of the client is allocated by DHCP, so its IP address is actually variable. I would like to know what is the simpliest way to maintain the communication between client and server when DHCP is enabled. I once used socket many years ago to communicate between the client and the server. If I remember it right, I actually bypassed the dynamic IP issues by using the computer name to replace the IP address. Even the client is not at the same local network as the server, the scheme still worked. Correct me if my memory cheated me. if socket is still the best solution for this kind of application involving DHCP? I also heard from someone that it is necessary to implement multicast discovery protocols named BONJOUR, but I don't think it is necessary

Apr 7, 2010I am contemplating the use of DHCP options as a way of passing host-specific information to hosts that are booting disklessly from a network server. My intention is to have the DHCP client request certain options, and use the reply to configure the diskless hosts accordingly. The theory and rules behind all of this seem well documented on web sites such as die.net. However, the practical application of the protocol seems to be a lot less clear. What I am looking for is an explanation of what (existing, I hope) tool(s) are used, and how they are applied so that I can grab information from the DHCP server, and use it in userspace scripts or other programs. Specifically, my intention is to use a locally defined option that would give a host-specific directory name or filesystem to use by the diskless host to obtain host-specific applications and configuration data.
So far, all of the DHCP client documentation I've found relates to the usual function of assigning IPs, etc. I've looked at dhclient-script on a Redhat system and can't figure out the relationship between it and the dhclient program. Clearly, the script is invoked somehow by dhclient, but I don't understand where the transfer of data received from the server gets into the script. Does dhclient just create a list of exported environment variables the child script then gets access too? What are the rules for how variables are created and what variables are created?

May 18, 2010I have installed a working DNS server on my home network. I have an unique server, devoted to dns, gateway, storage which runs opensuse 11.0 (I known that it is rather old). Two new clients require DHCP. I have installed, using yast, a very simple DHCP server, according to the following config:

option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1;
option routers 192.168.0.1;

(I have tried to add "ddns-update-style none", and to remove the ntp-servers option, since my server is not a time server, without success). Unfortunately, even if the client (a mac running OSX 10.4) receives a right IP and gateway address, it displays neither dns server address nor default domain name. The same mac, on my office network (not managed by me), receives everything.

Oct 22, 2010Back in April I set up a Ubuntu DHCP server and a multiple VLAN network [URL] to migrate our various servers, workstations, etc off the 192.168.1.1 /24 network that everything was on because we where running out of address space. I built out the new network and everything worked great except our AD server would never get an IP address from the DHCP server (static reservation) and even if I set the IP statically on the AD server it couldn't ping the gateway and noone could log in. After several attempts to resolve this, including bringing in outside help, we where never able to figure out what the problem was.
Now 6 months later I have time to revisit the issue without effecting the live network. I used Acronis and imaged the AD server last Friday, cloned it on to another box with the same hardware, and put it up on the new network that's been sitting unused for the last 6 months. Today when I statically set the IP on the AD server (which is what I want) it connects and I can ping it's gateway 192.168.1.1 and all the way across vlans to a test sales agent workstation at 192.168.8.xxx on vlan 800 but only if I statically assign the agents station an IP address. When I try to get an IP address via DHCP it fails as destination unreachable. Nothing has changed in the last 6 months on the DHCP server but now it for some reason can't ping its default gateway 192.168.1.1. All of the config files are the same as they where left from the post linked above aside from the vlan id's used where changed from 1's to 100's (i.e. vlan 3 is now vlan 300) /etc/network/interfaces
