View 9 RepliesI installed openSUSE 11.3 on my iMac along with "Mac Snow Leopard, Windows 7" to make it a "Triple Boot". But after installing the "GRUB/LILO", it does not chain with the boot loader "REFIT" that I use. Each time I try to boot into "Windows/openSUSE", it shows a message: no boot device found, insert boot disc". So why isn't the "GRUB/LILO" working?

I installed proftpd on my Ubuntu 10.10 install. I also run multiple websites that I want to allow ftp access to for 2 different users. The websites are located in /home/www/. This is where the guide I was following told me to put them. I also don't have a user named www.How can I give write permission to upload, delete, and edit all the files in /home/www/ for multiple users? They can connect to the ftp server and see the file, just not change them.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've come across an unusual requirement for a service in my Ubuntu system.Simply put, I need to find a way to search for all instances of a term in a file, delete lines containing containing that term, and delete four lines below each instance of that term. ither that, or copy the entirety of a file to a new file and skip over all lines containing the term plus four below it.This sounds kinda weird, I know. Without going too far into detail, I either have to change the logfile format for a server I'm running which is a huge pain in the butt, or I can just run a script to edit an HTML report generated from said logs. (Said report is really just for managers to peruse, and I like my log format, so I'm pursuing option 2.)

I wanna delete a directory with its files and I wanna do that as follows: rm -r dirToDelete Unfortunately, I always get asked for EACH single file if I wanna delete this because it is write protected.... View 3 Replies View RelatedLets say I have 20 files named FOOXX, where XX is the number of the file, eg 01, 02 etc. At the moment, if I want to delete all files lower than the number 10, this is easy and I just use a wildcard, eg rm FOO0* However, if I want to delete specific files ina range, eg 13-15, this becomes more difficult. rm FPP[13-15] does not work, and asks me if I wish to delete all files. Likewse rm FOO1[3-5] wishes to delete all files that begin with FOO1 So, what is the best way to delete ranges of files like this? I have tried with both bash and zsh, and I don't think they differ so much for such a basic task?

I have created a folder "/home/jim/myFiles" where he can save his document files. But Jim has accidentally deleted his myFiles folder on 2 occasions. He had intended to delete a file in that folder. Is there a way to lock the folder so that the user and create/read/write documents in that folder but not delete the folder itself?

We can see that sed just deletes the first three lines. How "seq 10 | sed -e '1,2d' -e '1,2d'"works?
I have a bunch of text files, all of them have a .txt extension. They are all located in subfolders of the /MyTextFiles folder (but could be anywhere, no idea what depth). If any line in any of the text files has the word "hello" I want to delete that entire line. I know sed and awk are made for this problem but I can't seem to get the syntax correct.

filesize=$(awk 'END {print NR}' $1)
but as for inserting this into the first line, i'm failing to do so. I've tried some of the other approaches on these forums but none so far have been able to do so.
I've tried:
sed '1i$filesize' $1
but sed i requires a string, not a variable so no go I've also tried:
mv "$1" "${1}.bak" 2>/dev/null || touch "${1}.bak"
cat $filesize "${1}.bak" >"$1"
but again with no luck as cat seems to need an input stream Just to recap, i want to insert a line at the start of a given file that holds the number of lines the original file has.

The start of my pattern is "Cred Id" and the end is "Pay Method" and I want to delete the blank lines between county and post code. I did find the code below but it doesn't seem to change anything:

I can get it to print just the range I'm interested in by doing sed -ne '/Cred Id/,/Pay Method/p'.
